i agree wholeheartedly.. dimeola was the reason i picked up guitar.. i
hear him play and i said "shit!! i gotta do that someday!".. who knows
if i'll ever get to that level though.. takes a lot..
but yeah.. the modern fusion scene is very much progressive music.. the
difference i see is that it's focused mainly around riffs and very jazzy
chord structure.. although casino moves in a very progressive way it's
fusion the sence that it's a mixture of jazz and rock.. the lead lines
he plays and the chords that build the songs have nothing standard
(straight major, minor, augmented, or diminished) about them..
so yes.. it's prog.. but more than anything it's fusion..
maybe that's why i like it so much :)

Well, I guess this is the end of SP. D'arcy threatened to quit if he was asked to come back. Oh well, no loss to the world. There last album was garbage anyway.

Gotta apologize for not knowing who Kenny was. About a month ago I didn't know who Neil Peart was. Most of the people on this list are musicians as in drummer, bassist, keyboardist, guitarists, and all have idols in those respective categories. I only play wind instruements and im a wannabe bassist/guitarist. That's probably why there are not many women among prog fans, becuase there just aren't that many women who play instruments in bands (not talking orchestra here). This is not up for debate, its a fact. I've spent plenty of time at Guitar Center, and don't remember seeing enother woman there.

I know of his work with Joni Mitchell... I'm not sure how many albums he actually appeared on, but he definitely works with her on 'Don Juan's Reckless Daughter" (1977). From what I understand he had quite a free rein in regards to his Bass contributions! This is one of my favourite Joni albums, who considers herself a Jazz musician. She also worked with Charles Mingus (another Jazz Great) on "Mingus", Herbie Hancock and other noted Jazz musicians. Perhaps you can check out her 'jazz influenced' works. ( I wouldn't call her music Jazz. It encompasses too many 'genre's')

Jaco is considered an excellent bassist in the Jazz community. His widow occasionally tells stories to the Joni community (her Internet List which I am a member of) in which she reminisces of Joni and Jaco's working relationship. Very interesting.

One of my major complaints about the music society is how people try to "catergorize" music. This doesn't sound "prog" enough. Metallica does not have the "metal sound" anymore. I have been both a DT fan and a Metallica fan since I discovered HARD ROCK. That is much broader catergory that almost every band mentioned in metal, progressive and white boy rap metal AKA Korn can kit into. You go into Camelot music and DT is in the POP/Rock section, while Savatage, POISON, and others are in the metal section. I can understand teh Tage, but Poison? People are to quick to make judgements on music because of an image. Take Reload for example. Of course it isn'y going to sound like Puppets, as Jason said. "We already did Master of Puppets" Does IAW sound like Awake? Does The 1st White Zombie CD sound like Astro Creep? Bands change over time, they would get bored doing teh same thing over and over again. To say DT or Metallica "sold out" is a very false statement indeed.

    Just my feelings, Kurt

You can't go wrong with Al DiMeola. his newest CD, Infinite Desire, is really cool. Also, his Acoustic Anthology is pretty cool.

Jaco Pastorius Birthday Concert is another really great CD, and it's live. Jaco is just about the best bass player ever, with some of the best tone!

One of the best CDs I have is John McLaughlin, Al DiMeola, and Paco DeLucia: Friday Nite in San Francisco. they tear it up on acoustic guitars, no rhythm section or anything. it's one of the most amazing live performances EVER.

John McLaughlin: The Promise is another really cool CD. It's got a whole slew of guest musicians, like Sting, Jeff Beck, DiMeola, etc.

John Scofield: A Go Go is pretty cool, too, and it has a pretty chill vibe. It features Medeski, Martin, and Wood, another cool group (they're organ, bass, and drums, not necessarily in that order).

    Hope this helps!

You are correct my friend. Please delete "early" from that description. For a musical style that's almost 100 years old, Kind of Blue would be recent, only having it's 40th anniversary this year.

    >>Steely Dan - Aja (a classic jazz-rock album)

    > ARGH! ARRRRGHH!!!! You did NOT just call Steely Dan jazz... tell me > you were kidding. PLEASE!

Ha! Ha! (I knew that would drive a real jazz fan crazy.) I did call it jazz-rock. Might be better to use jazz-influenced rock. Let's just say that anyone who only knows rock and metal would listen to Aja and say what the hell are they playing...(I did the first time I heard it). The standard reply is "jazz". But it can be a good stepping stone for a first-timer like the original poster. It's a lot more accessible than jumping straight into the deep end of jazz (and running away traumatized).

Hey all.. Just wanted to talk about Kenny for a moment. I would like to start off by saying the NO OTHER drummer has been as instrumental in my drum "career". Kenny literally taught me how to drum (except for the rudiments and techniques that I learned in lessons, playing jazz) Now a little history on Kenny. Kenny is an older drummer (I say older in the sense that he has seen the music scene progress probably 3 times before I was born) I don't know what Kenny's first gigs were, but I know for a fact that Kenny was John Mellencamps' first and only drummer up until "Mr. Happy go lucky" was released. I must say that Kenny is one of the most SOLID rock drummers that I have ever heard. In fact, I think that his best work (that I have heard) will have to be on "Whenever we wanted" by JM. SOLID good rock! As for why KA left John "Cougar" Mellencamp (John has lost the Cougar now for years). Upon completion of JM's "Mr. Happy go lucky album" KA felt left out of the mix. Why, you ask? JM's producer thought that it would be a great idea to use a rap producer on the album to "Pop" up the album. It turns out that nearly 75% of KA's drum tracks were "removed" from the album. They used a drum machine on a bunch of the tracks. I HATE THIS ALBUM. When KA left JM's band he immediately had work. He joined up with Bob Segar. When he found out that BS had no intention of going into the studio for a while, he departed. Next, KA got some "fill-in" work. He in no way "joined" Smashing Pumpkins. He "joined" for the tour. In fact, he was paid handily. Now for my pumpkins "rant". Screw Jimmy Chamberlin. This guy single handedly killed a great keyboardist by "inflicting" his habit on him. I firmly feel that the Pumpkins are going completely against what they said when they decided to part with him. It is downright disgusting. If anyone honestly feels that Jimmy Chamberlin is no longer a heroin addict, please let me know. I can't think of any rock star that has been able to "kick" the habit in one year. Heroin is debillitating. I don't know what to say.... Well, I can say this. I am not buying any Pumpkins albums! I'm off the soapbox... the closest thing i can think of would be his work with joni mitchell on her albums "hejira" and "don juan's reckless daughter;" music from both is also on the transcendent live album "shadows and light."

that being said, though, let me add that if you play bass, you're doing yourself a disservice if you don't listen at the very least to his first, eponymous album, and weather report's "heavy weather." both will stun you and make you either woodshed intensely or consider quitting altogether, i promise. 8-)

All this talk about jazz and such brings up a question I have: who, if anyone, is performing fusion music today? I love Al DiMeola, Jean Luc Ponty and other similar artists, but much of their material was recorded in the '70's and '80's. Is there anyone carrying on the "fusion" tradition, or has the music morphed into something else? I'm always looking for recommendations of new music, as there's no such thing as "too many CDs"...
