With a little experience (not first-hand knowledge, luckily) myself, I can
say that may not always be the case. Responsible, yes, but not everybody
has the guts to resist those very persistent and influential persuaders,
who brainwash people into thinking that regular heroin trips is something
no one can live without. A friend of mine got pushed on the wagon and
hasn't gotten off since. Just because he was told "it's cool, why'nt ya
check it out just for once". And for all it's worth, I lay most of the
blame on those two bigmouthed hippies who turned him to hard drugs.

So, in short, I beg to differ.

DTC: Listening to Dream Theater while intoxicated is a worthless
    experience.

I've been trying to send Ytsejim an MP3 of Dixie Dregs' Ice Cakes (from What
If). Would anyone know of an FTP server to which I can upload the file -
and would this server be available for us all to use as a kind of MP3
    exchange server?

This is something which would benefit us all as we tend to use MP3's to
sample bands' music (I got into Spock's Beard, Chromakey and a few others
    through MP3s).

    Hey,

Lots of talk about jazz and fusion and stuff, I don't think
anyone's mentioned Bill Bruford's Earthworks. I don't know too much
about it, I've only heard it a couple of times (my brother has it - but
I'm about 4000 miles away from him now). I don't know the other
musicians on it but basically it's kind of a jazzy, fusion, bunch of
instrumentals, alot of it is played by Bill using his Simmons electronic
drums (most advanced at the time). I ought to get hold of it being an
    electronic drum man myself.

            Anyhoo....

Dave (a UK jammer - now in Alabama).

NP: Machine Head - The More Things Change (er...not very jazzy at all
    really).

Hi all, just thought I'd comment here:

    >Lars is a great drummer. I remember the evil " Less Is More?" debate
    >that started just after I got here (I seem to remember some thread
    >about Liv Tyler blowing her dad was in my first Digest!), and someone
    >said "Lars isn't interesting enough to play slow...la la la...xyz
    >drummers had it, Ringo had it..." No he didn't. Beatles records bore
    >the living shit out of me. The drums are shite; okay, you can argue
    >that nothing else would really have fitted, but none of that
    >disguises that Ringo Star was a shit drummer. And Lars Ulrich IS
    >interesting enough when he plays slow. IMO.

Well I'm no drummer, I'm a guitarist, but to my ears, Lars is in fact
one of the worst drummers of all time in a famous band. I don't like
his sense of timekeeping, his sound or his fills. Some of his notes
just seem to be in the wrong places, imo. He just sounds cheesy to me,
and pretty bog-standard. And another thing. He pulls some ridiculous
    faces.

On the black album "making-of" video, whilst listening to playbacks of
the Nothing Else Matters drum tracks, Lars says, "Bonham would be
proud". Well I didn't know John, but all I can say is that he probably
would be laughing too much to even think about being proud.

Ringo was a shit drummer too, but at least he didn't have an ego
problem, as far as I am aware.

Hmmm....as for Opeth, I am not really into them, but In Flames I like, and Dark Tranquillity... If you haven't heard of Dimension Zero, pick up a copy (if you find one in stores, I got mine through cdnow as an import). It features members of In Flames and Dark Tranquillity.

As for A Change Of Seasons (older version), in case you didn't know, there is a live version of it in Canadian Skies.. The address is http://dreamtheater.ml.org

Now....the Metallica issue....I like them...I like KEA all the way up to GI. Yes, I will have to agree that they did change and all that non-sense. I still like the music whether or not some rap, or alternative kid says that they are his favorite band and he only knows Until It Sleeps and King Nothing. IF images and words started getting airplay all over and eMpTyV had a video of almost all the songs on the album and played them every 30 minutes...I would still like it, even though some would classify it as being selling out material. Actually, I give up on the selling out crap.. I have been arguing the point since the Black album. If you like them, listen to them, if you don't, don't listen to them, don't waste your breath on arguing the point of whether they sold out or not...

P.S. I am new here so I have the slightest idea of whether or not you guys know any of this material... later

Jaco is probably the best bassist ever. Obviously this is debatable, but it is a lot more clear-cut than best guitarist or best drummer to most people. He has a wide variety of work, from his weather report albums, to joni mitchell, to his solo albums. I recommend heavy weather. It is very much a fusion album, but it has teen town, a jaco composition that has some of his best playing and is about as close to rock as he got. Also check out his self-titled solo album and the birthday concert cd, both are very good.

Yeah, Dream Theater have built up a pretty good rep over here on the east coast. Whenever I see them, the places are packed and they are usually turning people away at the door if they don't have tickets. The clubs see this and they raise the prices. When I saw DT at Irving Plaza, 11/22/97, tickets were maybe $15-18. The next time I went to see them, they went up to $25. I'm not complaining in the least bit. It doesn't matter the price of the ticket, or where they are. I live in New York and I went two and a half hours away to the see them in Connecticut. One more thing. How come they have never played any stadiums like Nassau or Jones Beach, and I don't mean as a supporting band. Type O played Nassau and didn't even sell the place out. They only had the floor seats open from what I heard. DT has as much, probably even more, of a following than Type O.

The drums are shite; okay, you can argue that nothing else could really have fitted, but none of that disguises that Ringo was a shit drummer. And Lars Ulrich IS an interesting enough when he plays slow, IMO." I was the one you paraphrased in your rant-let. None of what you have said above disguises the fact that you have absolutely failed to make a point. You know what? I don't care for the Beatles either, but saying that Ringo was a shit drummer is ignorant. I'll write this next bit in caps so you that you can clearly see a concept that is apparently alien to you. PLAYING WHAT FITS IS THE WHOLE FUCKING IDEA!!!!!!!!!! Ok. Lars is not playing what fits, his new methodology is quite suspect. He's LAZY. He plays nearly the exact same thing in every song and doesn't vary his fills to any appreciable degree. He plays the snare and kick with the same volume and intensity in nearly every song (mostly the kick...he IS doing snare rolls these days, but they're sloppy...another component of his laziness). I'd even say that Lars played FAST in the early days to disguise the fact that he was a shit drummer. Fast was all he could do to impress anyone. How do you find Lars' slow playing interesting? Is it the repetition? The complete lack of creativity? Ringo, despite playing stuff that bores the shit out of your pristine ass, was not lazy. Though he played a lot of the same things, his touch varied from song to song, giving each one its own unique vibe. No, I don't like the Beatles. But I am a careful listener (even to stuff that I don't like). Maybe you should listen carefully too. -Rahul Ananda-

I wouldn't say Lars was always a shit drummer, just in the 90's ;) heh heh. Seriously though, the older stuff is better, most of the albums have decent drums, and one could argue their shittiness I suppose, except for one, ...And Justice For All. That album has some VERY good drum parts in it, so good in fact, it almost hurts to hear them do stuff from that album live now, cause Lars can't play his *OWN* songs to save his life, *especially* that album... Lars playing slow? nowadays, terrible, wasn't too bad on the black album, but the newer stuff... makes one wonder why they didn't just use a drum machine, it would have had just as much feeling in it... as for a drummer playing good slow, I'd take MP :)

I think Lars' new minimalist drumming philosophy is based on the fact that he smokes too much pot, drinks too much and generally has degraded to the point of having a hard time keeping time. He has never been able to play true double bass like guys like Portnoy or Raymond Herrera or Virgil Donati... so he played fast with his hands... but not with his feet...
