But that is just 'ONE' song too. With 'ONE' main heavy riff. How
many other intricate riffs have you heard Lars do and pull them off
live for that matter. Its just that the other guys (Portnoy, Donati)
have so many other things they bring to the music when they play
double bass, not just mimicking what the guitarist/bassist is doing.

    Lets get it on, WOOOO!!!

For all you non-TON addicts out there, Johnny Kelly is the drummer's name (or Sal Abruscato if you're listening to Bloody Kisses). He at least CONTRIBUTES to the mood of the song, rather than just giving it a beat. Very tasteful SLOW drumming (and yes, I mean SLOW). Listen to "Haunted" off "October Rust" and tell me if you've ever heard a slower song. It makes "Red Water" on the same CD seem rushed.... :)

"Dragon's Kiss" (it's the CD title). Yep, Marty Friedman. It's a very interesting CD, most of the later solo records he did veer toards new age.. BTW it's just Marty and Castronovo playing on it, actually, and the latter positively kills ass on it. Or maybe he kicks, I don't know.

    REGARDING:

Greeting music lovers and critics, I have recently taken a great interest in the "groove." I really want to hear and transcribe some cool funk guitar stuff. I already have Infeccious Grooves, Ron Thal, The Headhunters, and I like the Cilly Peppers. I tried Tower of Power, and they seem way too disco. Any comments or recs? Thanks. Be well. Matt B

I would say, get your booty in gear and find:

LOL! I just laughed at my friend because he picked that up the other day. The cover looked all cheesy but he said they were good, so he popped them in the CD player and I was still like, "LOL, what the hell is this?" But it only took like 5 minutes and I wanted to rape it from him. I dunno how to explain them... Sort of like an Extreme Faith No More/Cheddar cheese melt with bacon. The singer doesn't really sing, he more or less raps over the music, but it's kind of like singing. (sort of like FNM) hehehe. The music was damn good, though. There was one track on it where they played a classical piece (Beethoven, I think) a la Savatage. Damn good "fun" shit to listen to. :)

    >For all you non-TON addicts out there, Johnny Kelly is the drummer's name

Now that you mention it, I'd taken notice of that before. hehehe It's true. :) He uses eccentric beats in slow songs. I really dig his style.

    Greetings ye 'jamanoids....

Y'know, I'm getting just a bit fed up with the people who automatically dismiss other folks' opinions just because their own differ. I.e., below:

    >>Umm have you listened to ONE from and just for all?? > >Yeah sure... studio tracks, great, have you ever listened to him live? >-The Doc

Half a dozen times, and he always put on a great show, including fast double-bass work. It's a fucking OPINION, Doc, just like your own. You don't have a mainline on the truth any more than anyone else does. Get over yourself.

    >Music content: I was on irc with the other ytse-loonies the other night when >esp(forgottherest) and Whofooldu were talking about music they thought was >kewl.. One mentioned was Jason Becker, and a cd, perpetual burn(?) anyone else >with some info on this dude and which cd (if there are more) to start out >with?

Trying to jump in before Madsman does on this one. Becker, basically, was one of the rising stars in the guitar world before he developed ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease. Nowadays he has trouble even feeding himself, to say nothing of playing guitar. Still, he's released another album of truly outstanding music, called "Perspective", which features some tracks he recorded before he was too ill to play, and some music he wrote and then had friends play for the disc. It is a triumph both musically and emotionally.

Becker also was in Cacophony with Marty Friedman (now in Megadeth). They released two albums of speed-metal-shred, "Speed Metal Symphony" and "Go Off!". Terrifyingly intricate music with, unfortunately, equally terrifyingly bad vocals. After that one Jason released "Perpetual Burn", a solo disc with some excellent neoclassical work and great playing. Jason also played on David Lee Roth's "A Little Ain't Enough" album and toured with DLR very briefly before his illness made him unable to continue.

For the story on what Jason's up to these days, visit his website at http://www.intres.com/jasonbecker/

    >They also i believe mentioned Dragons Tears, either a cd or song by >Marty Friedman(?)

Friedman used to be a solo artist and is a good friend of Jason Becker. After they broke Cacophony up, Marty released a solo disc "Dragon's Kiss" around the same time Jason released "Perpetual Burn". "Dragon's Kiss" is speed metal and shred all the way. In 1992, despite being in Megadeth now, Marty did an abrupt about-face and released a new age CD "Scenes". Little shred here, mostly Japanese new age-feel music (Kitaro helped produce the CD). His next two solo releases, "Introduction" and "True Obsessions", are a similar style of music. Evidently Marty likes a much different style of music when he's playing on his own time and not in Megadeth. :)

    ta, Phil

Well, this has to be the Japanese version of the CD. First, you get two extra songs and not one !! One is a short studio cut which is straight-forward but pretty decent (ever hear it live Cashman ?? hehehehe). The other is an acoustic version of "Why" that is really cool. They did a completely different arrangement of the song with sounds that one would have not thought possible to be associated with the song but it works for me. And, it has Andre Matos of Angra adding some supporting vocals.

It has to be out there for cheaper than $32 though !!

umm.. funny how people have that perseption.. if you look at old beatles' album notes you'll notice that the songs are all spliced up like "first verse 9th take on day 3, 2nd verse 5 take on day one, etc".. and you'd never know listening to it and taking into consideration the fact that they didn't have click tracks and the technology we do, you can say anything you want about ringo, but i don't know too many drummers who can go into a studio day after day and keep the EXACT tempo they did the day before..

yeah.. .ringo gets too much shit from everyone... my 2 cents..

I hate to fly off the handle like this, but that is simply ridiculous. To blame someone else for a decision an adult makes of his own free will is ridiculous, and it stinks of this "blameless society" crap that must be reaching Estonia, too. I thought it was just the U.S. that was a society of victims without any sense of personal responsibility. This is like focusing on supply instead of demand in the national drug "war." Oops. Jason Becker... now that's a name I have heard ANYONE mention in a LONG time. Amazing guitarist! "Perpetual Burn" is Jason Becker's 1st (and only???) solo album. Marty Friedman plays on a few solos on it. JB & MF had a band together called Cacophony. MF has about 4 solo CDs, they ALL are GREAT. His 2nd & 3rd are mellow, relaxing, kinda "new age-ish". ALL CDs are available through Shrapnel Records.

LAst time I heard JB was that he had ALS & was dying :( But, also, he was writing new music w/ hired musicians. Not sure what happened with that. If anyone knows, please contact me - thanx.

It was a great show and I got a chance to chat with Tony afterwards. We talked a bit about the LTE shows and he asked if I was wearing earplugs at the L.A. show (he said it was "one of the loudest shows I've ever played"). We also talked about the upcoming LTE2 and he confirmed that this would pretty much have to be it since Jordan is now in DT. Well, we can always hope for some more live shows down the line... -Kyle

Lisa forgot to say: They also i believe mentioned Dragons Tears, either a cd or song by Marty Friedman(?) sorry if im wrong but this is oozing out of my tired gray cells in disjointed bits and pieces.

Marty has about 4 solo albums out. I have purchases all 4 in the past but sold the first one and the last one., Dragon Kiss, and True Obsesion. I sold these two cause they reminded me of what Via did after S&R, i like the guitar instrumentals, but didn't like the singing. I do still own the middle two MF: Scenes, & MF: Introduction. These two are very slow giutar groovy (hard to describe). Kind of like Via's Sex and Religion on downers. Don't get me wrong there is some goo fast playing in there, but it's not anything like his stuff with Megadeth. VERY GOOD cd's! Play them as background music when reading or cruising the web. There are lots of bells, rain sounds and other good stuff. YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY! i'd classify this as progrock, but thats just my opinion. These two are completely instrumental, no singing but there are some voices talking in the background on some songs. His riffs sound like some real good blues running through Via's huge midi stack.

I know you'll love them, indii(still looking for some Spock's Beard and Ocean Machine MP3s!)

Actually, yeah...that's why, I think. Companies do that kind of thing with people who work with solo musicians who don't really have an "official" band or a band that is subject to change whenever the solo artist feels like it. Like say, advertisements that look like this: Jennifer Batten (Michael Jackson); Darryl Jones (Sting) or most recently Darryl Jones (Rolling Stones) or before that Darryl Jones (Madonna).
