    Greetings fellow DT fans,

I just got in the door from my first JP guitar clinic. In case anyone cares, he played the following songs:

Paradigm Shift Biaxident Another Dimension State of Grace Universal Mind

He was playing the new JPM-100 Ibanez. IMHO, it's the nicest looking and sounding guitar from the whole JPM series. He went thrugh alll his practicing techniques, answered MANY questions, and there was an autographed Ibanez actioned off as well. And then when I was walking out the door, there was some dude selling ytsejam t-shirts. It was a great night, and it was totally worth extending my spring break 2 extra days!

Mr. Geetar, you forgot to tell the kids to say "sev" in their heads, not "seven", or else it'll be a little TOO easy, because they'll be in 4/4. :-)

Hey, I learned a cool time sig trick anyone can play - if you're having trouble counting in x/5, try saying "hippopotamous" to the beat. you could probably use it for x/10 or x/15; i know when i'm trying to count to the beginning of LtL, it's hard to say 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15(and of course seven)...I end up saying lev-twelve-thir-fuh-fuh....

Blind Melon and their stupid comment epitomized the ignorance that people have about metal. If Hoon had been the one to make the comment, then obviously no one deserves to die for that, but it was ignorant and I don't think a lot of people here mourned his death, especially since it was self-induced.

Which is what I believe Mike is saying in the song, btw; that the pressure on an artist could sometimes drive him to self-destruction.

Hey - I figured it out...

Cliff didn't die, Lars did, as Mosh just pointed out. He was murdered by Jamez. See, Cliff, being a trained bassist, not drummer, is masquerading as Lars now (he had his legs chopped off mid-calf to compensate for the height difference), and is a shitty drummer (of course AJFA had already been recorded, thus explaining the tight album drumming and sloppy live drumming). Lars was getting too good for Metallica so they HAD to kill him... ;)

Also, Les Claypool was too good for Metallica - and too weird, though still alive (but I still want to see Metallica cover the Beaver song by Primus), which is why he didn't get Newsted's job - that's a different story - but Newsted's a Phoenix metalhead so it's OK that he ain't as good as Les (not that he would've fit anyway)... :)

Har har har... are we sure that it was Cliff Burton who died? ;) >>>>>>>

Exactly what kind of ignorance? They lumped "Pull Me Under" in with hair metal, which is somewhat ignorant but understandble for people who aren't metalheads or prog fans. There are plenty of people on this list who would listen to a song by, say, Orbital and think "boy, more crappy dance music" or a song by Al Stewart and think "boy, more crappy folk." Don't deny it; there's comments like that around here all the time. People generalize here about alternative, about rap, about folk, etc.

Aside from the hair metal stuff, their comments consisted entirely of their own opinions about the song, which they have every right to.

BTW, for anyone who is trying to figure out what the fuck we're arguing about, the relevant excerpt of the article can be found at http://www.prognosis.com/gabbo/dt/dt-melon.html.

Harry D'Amour (wasn't that the character in "Lord of Illusions"?) wrote: > -Another thing that pissed me off and I got to say it is Jon Schaffer's= and > his little pet Matt Barlow's attitude. They go around blaming Metallica > "and bands that betray their fans" and swearing that "the day they'll > betray their fans is the day they die"=20

Where and when did they say this? They said Metallica 'betrayed their fans'? =20

Here's an ACTUAL Jon Schaffer quote:

"if you look at what Metallica=92s done, I=92m not into the Load album, I think there=92s some pretty cool stuff on Reload, but everybody came down on them so hard - and I did too - but now I look back and I think, you know, who cares? That=92s them."

OK, so he's saying that it doesn't matter as long as they're going what they want to be doing. What's the problem there?

Here's the WORST thing I ever heard Schaffer say about Metallica (and it's referring not even to their music... just Lars' shitty attitude):

"The one thing that disappointed me about Metallica was the way Lars was handling himself in interviews, saying that they were never Metal, or that Metal is dead. He said alot of stuff like that over in Europe, which really pissed off alot of people, and I was pissed, too."

In the same breath, he even went on to say nice things about Newsted and Hetfield then:

"I=92ve seen interviews with James, and with Newsted, and those guys stil= l seem like they are really cool people, down to earth and with their heads on right"

    > These words come out of Iced Earth, one of > the few bands that's ripped off Metallica riffs so blatantly, especiall= y > those in Master of Puppets album. Iced Earth should at least keep their > mouth shut and show some respect for their greatest influences.=20

They show no respect for their influnces?

    Here's another quote (from Schaffer):

"Musically, I would say Steve Harris from Iron Maiden. Iron Maiden is probably the number one influence for me. Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, old Metallica, I liked when I was younger. I would say, that was the four most influential bands. It all goes way back to even early childhood stuff - Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, and all that stuff. I really still enjoy that, and I consider that to be probably the basic roots of Iced Earth=92s sound."

Seems like he's showing respect there (for all the above bands). Even specifically naming Metallica as one of his four MOST influential groups.

...and another (responding to a question about whether he'd enjoy opening for Iron Maiden and Judas Priest):

"Hell yeah. I would be in heaven. Those guys are my heroes. I wouldn=92t know what to do. I would be like, I don=92t know. It would blow me away. Especially Maiden. = I just want to meet Steve Harris, because he has been an inspiration for me since I was fourteen years old, as far as how to be a leader, a songwriter, and just a good person. Everything I=92ve ever seen or read about the guy has just impressed me, very much. He=92s still a real person after all the years, and all the success. I=92ve met so many people that haven=92t even had half the success, and they=92re assholes. They think their shit doesn=92t stink. That=92s t= he kind of people I love to stay away from. That=92s one reason I really look up to Steve. It would b= e a true honor to open for those guys. I would love it. For Priest, too."

    Hmmmm.....MORE RESPECT, apparently.

And another (when asked what he though of Bruce Dickinson/Adrian Smith's latest album):

"Yeah, it=92s killer. I would love to jam with them, too. That would be another dream come true. I would love to play with Maiden. The old Maiden line up, the new Maiden line up, the new Priest line up, whatever, any of those guys. The way I look at it, they=92re the pioneers. They=92re the second generation of pioneers, and we=92re the third generation. We just have to keep this going."

    > > Of course, they wouldn't dare to change > > their style (though I like Something wicked....), =20

Actually, Something Wicked sounds a bit different than Dark Saga, a little more different than Burnt Offerings, and significantly different than Night of the Stormrider. Not DRASTICALLY different, but then again, I see that as a good thing.

    > > not out of respect for their fans but because they've created a core = of fans that > > they'll be buying their albums until they die.=20

Yeah, since it's such a HUGE following, especially in their home country (USA). Check out these album sales figures (this is a bit out of date..... these #'s are from 1997)

Approximate U.S. Album sales (as of late '97): Iced Earth (self titled disc): 1,000 copies Night of the Stormrider: 2,500 Burnt Offerings: 5,000 The Dark Saga: 10,000

Now granted, they do better overseas, but don't make it sound like they're raking in the millions or anything. They're NOT EVEN NEARLY as big as say, Dream Theater (and we all know Dream Theater isn't even a HUGE seller)

    > > But I didn't see Dr. Mosh > > or anyone else judging Iced Earth....

That's because Jon is one of the guys who's really championing metal right now. He's out there kicking ass and trying to keep metal alive.

All I can says is that a band with 2 musicians below average, a decent lead guitarist, the best rhythm guitarist around and a decent vocalist, then they have done a pretty good job.... But then Motley Crue have sold way too many albums with no talent what so ever, so....

Be EXCELLENT to each other! Kenn
