I totally agree. The Beatles were and are one of the best bands to ever come
along. The number of bands influenced by them are far too numerous to even
begin to imagine. The Beatles created and experimented with studio techniques
that were so far ahead of time, they could not be duplicated on tour. As for
best album, well i am partial to "Revolver".

Really ?! I though he was the only guy who could play in that band (not

IMO Poison has released one brilliant CD and that's "Native Tongue". Too
bad that the band's collaboration with Richie Kotzen didn't last too long.

Because you don't like their music or that they looked like chicks? At least
he played on all of the albums, unlike RINGO! Come on- how bad do you have to
be to not keep a Beatles beat? Also, about C.C. He is FAR from worst musician!
He did suck live sometimes because he was so drunk & strung out on cocaine.
But if you've heard some of his solos on their albums- they were great. From
speedy to tasteful slow licks, he could pull off some tasty stuff. Is the solo
to "Nothing But A Good Time" not a great solo? They could also write a good
rock/pop song too- W/O the help that Aerosmith, Bon Jovi or Motley Crue had w/
Desmond Child or Bob Rock. (Not that those bands are better or worse.) My
point-Poison has never used outside writers. I'm not saying their image wasn't
a little "out there" or that you should like them. I'm just saying open your
mind and think about why you're saying what you're saying. I think I'm the
only person that grew up on that shit who admits that I actually liked it, and
in a way still do. Everybody talks about how they suck so bad. Well, how come
those bands sold millions of albums? I'm sure you've owned a few in your time.
As a fellow Ytsejammer, I'm TOTALLY surprised you didn't mention any 90's
crap players. Are the guys in Korn great players? No. To tell you the truth,
half the time I have to listen hard for a discernable(sp?) guitar part. I
mean, I hear the guitars obviously, but it's all mud. I do have to admit they
do have a cool aggressive sound, it just wears thin quick w/ me. I'm not a big
Nirvana fan, & Kurt Cobain was also a terrible player, but I have to admit he
had other strengths that put him ahead of the rest like his songwriting. Now
those are two big bands today, I like a song here and there from both bands,
but I certainly don't listen to them for musicianship. The thing I hate about
bands today (other than shitty "life sucks" or "feel sorry for me" lyrics, and
singers who aren't worth a shit in general-there are a FEW exceptions) is that
they play loud distorted guitars like they're acoustic guitars. You know,
constantly "strumming" all of the strings- no matter how many are actually
being played. It just tends to sound the same after oh, 1 song, and ANYBODY
can play like that.
80's bands get a lot of crap because of the way they looked, but some had
really good players- especially guitarists, that actually cared about their
playing ability. Vito Bratta, Paul Gilbert, John Sykes(Whitesnake), Reb Beach,
George Lynch, you get the picture. I'll stop here since your probably dying to
flame me already. If I offended anyone, it was unintentional... this time at
least. ;-)

PS- Poison's "Native Tongue" was indeed a brilliant album. Some of their best
work.
PPS- Sucky 80's guitarists- how about the guy from Twisted Sister? Now HE
leaves something to be desired.

Hey-
Has anybody who has a copy of a live LTE video noticed how JP plays the
intro? I'm talking about the speedy first lick that consists of four notes-
E,F,D,Db. If you've seen the tab on the FAQ, its transcribed as being in 12th
position, which I thought made some sense-(or 17th position as an
alternative). But I swear it looks like JP does it in 15th position, playing
the D,E, and F on the B string, and only playing the Db on the G string! Is
this NOT awkward as hell compared to the other positions for anybody else
also? I suppose I could be wrong on how he plays it, but my slo-mo feature on
the VCR is pretty clear. Let me know what you think.

The original does indeed have it; for lo, "Am I Evil?" is the most
threatening and evil sounding rock song EVER, Black Sabbath's
catalogue notwithstanding. Metallica played it at the Ministry of
Sound gig (hiyas to anyone else who was there - eardrums working
again yet?), and I went fucking mad - I'd never heard it before.

This is a little unfair, since you'll find that the person who
explicitly did help re-write You Or Me was Desmond Child. Got to
agree though, I'm not so keen on either version. The solo's kinda

With the summer getting closer, details are being finalised for the
festivals and some lineups are looking very tasty. The events announced
for the UK (Metallica, Aerosmith) - headliners aside, look pretty crap,
but the lineups for the likes of the Dynamo, Wacken festivals etc look
excellent for those who can endure a load of Death/black metal bands.
On the other hand, and much more to my taste, is the festival put together
by Olivier Garnier of CNR records in France, who is building an excellent
lineup from bands on his own label - which include the excellent Rhapsody,
Angra and favourites like Superior and Vanden Plas. With a few slots yet to
be confirmed, the current lineup is as follows:
LE FESTIVAL "CNR MUSIC" :
1) ANGRA
2) To be confirmed (A group which hasn't yet signed for CNR records)
3) VANDEN PLAS (first concert of 1999)
4) group to be confirmed (very special Friends !!!!!!)
5) ROYAL HUNT (first date in the Paris area)
6) EDGUY
7) FREEDOM CALL
This will take place Saturday 29th May at l'Agora d'Evry (capacity 4000),
35Km from Paris on the autoroute A6. Ticket price - around 180FF.
Granted that the Angra/Stratovarious/Superior show in Paris in
January sold over 4000, at a ticket price only 10FF cheaper, I think
this event may well be a sell-out.
Now if he could just find a slot for Rhapsody or Superior, this will be one
sensational day out!

Thanks for posting that update, man! Haven't seen Bruford jam in a
while. I'm not at all familiar with his new stuff, so can anyone
recommened ONE* Earthworks CD to start with first? I'm looking for stuff
which sounds closer to the prog fusion stuff he did with Bill Bruford
Band (and to some extent parts of the UK stuff), rather than the King
Crimson or Yes stuff.
*Payday is next Tuesday, but I have to keep it under some semblance of
control, and there's this new Spock's Beard disc that's at the top of
the list :)

I don't want to start the whole FII bashing thread again, but I think it was Desmond Child who helped rework the lyrics and chorus on You or Me. And call me what you like, I prefer the album version (You Not Me). It's actually one of my favorite songs on that disc. The guitar and lead break is great. On the other hand, IMHO, Petrucci was struggling in the lyrics department on FII (with the exception of LitS), and any help he received may have been well advised.
As for Shirley, I don't know how much you can blame him. He seems to have a way of making everything full, but somewhat bland. Another favorite band of mine, The Black Crowes, used him on their latest disc. It also came out full, yet bland. Shirley seems to have a big reputation based on his work with Aerosmith. Maybe people in the industry have been giving Shirley a little too much credit for Aerosmith's comeback.

P.S. You may be able to blame Shirley for taking away the original acoustic guitar on TAMP, and focusing more on the happy, chimey, little electric riff (which I hate). But only the people involved really know...
