They did look \nice, but that doesn't really mean jack squat. Check out Yamaha TRBII series, you won't be sorry. No experience with Spector, but I heard they'r neat too. I guess it depends how deep do you wanna reach in your pocket.

Supergroups seem to be in the current trend in Prog circles these days - and that's great 'cos we all get new albums churned out on a really frequent basis and they are usually pretty fresh.
What about Geddy Lee? I haven't heard his name in connection with any recent projects and he must have a shit-load of ideas for songs/instrumentals etc... Would Geddy be the kind of person who would get involved in a Supergroup? I personally would love to see how he would function in a band without Lifeson or Peart.
Any thoughts??

Cyberduke asked about DT's motivation. I'd like to thow my neck on the block and make a suggestion. It's like Tori once said. When DT were younger, they were inspired by bands like DP, YES, Marillion, and all these other great bands, that touched people so much. And so they grew up, and discovered that *THEY* could make music that can really touch people. And so they inspire the next generation of musicians, and the wheel keeps on turning. If you're inspired, you want to inspire others. I know that when I write stuff, it's like that. Sorry if that's excessively touchy-feely, but it strikes me as being a little more poetic that "Well, I guess being in DT keeps their chops up and they can make more money playing this stuff than working on a building site".

She's probably one of those people who has to find the symbolism in everything, even when there's none there. Has it ever occured to her that maybe - just MAYBE now - LTE didn't want to say anything with their music? Maybe they just wanted to get together and jam and have a good time and let everyone else hear the results, with no implied message, with no personal agenda, just four guys who play really well getting together and having a good time? Stranger things have happened (like Kid-Rock getting a record deal). :)

Cheap songs can hardly be interpreted. They don't develop and don't make you think. They simply say "life's shit and then you die" or how the songwriter likes drinking, fucking, smocking... That's punk/grunge.

Why does it need a message? I don't recall a whole lot of meaningful lyrics in any Beethoven symphonies... How's this for a message: this music kicks almighty arse. Sometimes painters make pictures with a specific social/political/emotional purpose. Other times they just paint pretty pictures because they're nice to look at. Your friend would probably write off any instrumental piece. Very few have a really clearly spelled out message. Their only message is whatever message you personally interpret them to have.

It was as profound as any poetry. I don't think that any great composers compose music just to create pretty sounds; they are all trying to express something thorough their chosen artistic medium.

With all this talk about seal, I haven't seen anyone mention his new CD, Human Being. The title track is absolutely INCREDIBLE! it is one of the coolest songs I have ever heard. I saw it on MTV at like two in the morning (one of the few times to catch videos) a few months ago, and was held captive by it. My roommate got the CD a few days later. It's pretty cool, but most of the rest of the songs are way more chill and ballady than Human Being. He's a great singer, though. It'd be really cool if he did stuff besides just the Kiss from a Rose-style love songs.

This question, I think, will be answered differently by everyone who hears LTE. The fact that it's an instrumental album leaves the actual notes and sounds as the only guideposts for a possible emotion or idea to be stirred within the listener, and as each listener's life history and experience is different, each listener will come away with a slightly different feeling from hearing the music. Some people will undoubtedly be unable to hear anything but "They're showing off"; others may catch something more personal in it. I know I do.

Good for her! Everyone, I think, should ask him/herself what s/he is "getting from" the music they listen to. If more people did, more people might develop discerning taste in music. Oops. I just implied that some music is better than other music, because I said "taste." Hmmm. Much debate rages on this issue. Let me take this line: Taste is personal, and what is good taste (in art) for one person might be very poor taste for another. It depends, as ever, on what values a person judges music (or art in general). Example: I read fiction for entertainment. Other people read fiction because they have interest in the craft of writing. So, to me, an entertaining plot is more esteemable than intricate character development or deep symbology. The opposite might be true for someone who reads fiction because of their interest in writing.

Like I said above. With DT specifically, the lyrics are going to help guide what a listener feels more than purely instrumental music would.
