    Greetings ye 'jamanoids...

    >I finally checked out Chromakey.com. And KevMo says that he once
    >wnated to collaborate with Tori AMos...

"collaborate with," hehehe. Guess that's one word for it....Yeah, I
remember Kev's "fantasy" that showed up in Metal Edge or some other such
mag: "Me and Tori Amos on top of a grand piano". :) :)

    Joe B. said:
    >Why does it need a message? I don't recall a whole lot of meaningful
    >lyrics in any Beethoven symphonies...

No, but remember that Beethoven made sure to NAME the movements in his
Sixth (Pastorale) Symphony (one of my all-time favorite classical pieces),
because he wanted to make sure that the musicologists and critics would get
the message: "Yes, there is in fact intended to be a STORY behind this
    music". :)

As for meanings behind instrumental music, or all music in general, here's
a quote from Aaron Copland that might help put things into perspective:

"The whole problem can be stated quite simply by asking, 'Is there a
meaning to music?' My answer would be, 'Yes.' And 'Can you state in so many
words what the meaning is?" My answer to that would be, 'No.' "

    Something to think about....

    Cheers,
    Phil

<< can't think of a subject title because i think this is stupid...you're
knocking guys because they performed someone else's song??? You know, maybe
they just LIKED the fucker or someone paid them a lot of money to do it,
why the hell knock them for it????, I'd do "Hit Me Baby One More Time" if
someone paid me enough...hehe. Poison was pure pop-fluff metal...not saying
they were horrible, i'd take them any day over creed.... I ignored this
thread until I saw an attack on Aerosmth, which happens to be my 3rf fav
band after DT and the Ryche(which this thread that has been going on has
boggled my mind with the stupidity of anyone who didn't have the brains to
read a few lyrics to realize they're about as anti-power government and war
     as any band can be).
I'm sure I'll get some response from people who hate Aerosmith, just
because they either can't get over their jealousy of them or are too
close-minded to like anything that doesn't have ten million time signature
changes, huge long keyboard solos, or they hate a band that will put out an
album full of 4 minute long radio friendly songs. There's nothing wrong
with any of these, but there is indeed a place for just some good old rock
and roll, and NOBODY does that better than Aerosmith IMO. If you listen to
"Walk This Way" and can't feel the groove in
that song, check your pulse...:) >>

I'm not sure if you were directing this towards me, but since I was the one
you quoted, I figured I'd respond. I wasn't ripping on Aerosmith or any other
band that uses outside writers, I was just using them as an example that even
the best groups sometimes write w/ people outside of the band, but Poison
chose not to. Obviously that doesn't mean they're better, but just that they
were talented in that area. Aerosmith's long career proves that they don't
need anyone else to write for them if they don't want to. And just so you
know, I agree with every word you wrote. Later!

Allow me to come out of lurk mode...I've been reading the past few jams
and I feel the need to say something. In my never-ending quest to turn
as many people onto DT as possible, I've run into a lot of people that
are idiots or who just really piss me off. Now maybe as a musician and
a fan of DT, Rush, Yes, Maiden, Zappa, etc. (you get the picture) I have
a different idea of what is good.

So rewind to like last week and I'm sitting with my friend's g/f, who,
by the way is a hippie, much like everyone else at my school. And she's
trying to explain to me how incredible Neil Young is. Now, in my
opinion, I think he sucks and I don't care how 'spiritual' (as she put
it) his lyrics are, I find the 3 same open chords in every song to be
extremely unoriginal and boring. And then there was some guy on the jam
who said someone asked him about LTE's message or purpose? Their
purpose is to jam with their favorite musicians and create beautiful
music...some people out there just can't understand that. If I want a
message or purpose, I'd rather go read some poetry. And don't get me
wrong, I think lyrics are somewhat important...there are some bands I
listen to with very inspiring lyrics like Marillion (w/Fish of course),
Dream Theater, Queensryche and Bruce Dickinson. But I think other
things are just as and sometimes more important. Why do some people
feel that there has to be a message or a purpose or some DEEP UNDERLYING
CONCEPT for the music to be good?

Furthermore, I saw someone posting about ballads in LTE, and I don't
know exactly what he was saying but it made me think of something else.
Sometimes when I play DT to people I hear shit like JP has no feeling,
so he sucks, unlike Paige, Hendrix, Clapton, Government Mule, Phish,
blah blah blah blah (you get the picture). No offense to these players
(even though Paige can't play in key if his life depended on it and
Hendrix may have influenced many but he is WAY overrated as a guitar
player). But I think lots of people out there think feeling means
vibrato/bending guitar playing with more blues influence than anything
else...and that pisses me off. I saw JP do a clinic in CT last week and
I'm going again in PA on Wed., and he did "State of Grace" and I heard
just as much feeling in that than I hear in any Hendrix song. The fact
is that all these players are human and none of their music is souless
or mindless, but each guitar player channels those feelings and emotions
    in a different way.

AHHHHH!!!!!! It felt so good to get that out! HENDRIX IS DEAD !!!!
    MOVE ON!!!!

I like Mr. Big, Paul Gilbert, and Richie Kotzen, I don't know why they'd want to get back together out of the blue w/o Paul Gilbert though. Hey, ye Jammers,

Since many of us DT fans also appear to be at least somewhat into classical music, I'm conducting an informal poll of your favorite composers/compositions. These could stretch from Renaissance music or whatever all the way up to Philip Glass and Steve Reich. Please, e-mail me privately (not the list!), and tell me your favorite composers/works.

    Here are mine:

Beethoven -- everything.... especially the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 9th symphonies, the 4th and 5th piano concertos, the Missa Solemnis, the "Pathetique", "Moonlight", "Appasionata", "Waldstein" piano sonatas, his violin concerto, on and on and on!

Dvorak -- 7th and 9th symphonies, "American" string quartet

    Bach -- Brandenburg Concertos

Debussy -- Prelude to the Whatever of a Faun, La Mer

Ravel -- Bolero (I'll never be able to get this out of my head!)

Stravinsky -- Rite of Spring (man, they should play this on ROCK radio!)

Steve Reich -- Music for 18 Musicians

Philip Glass -- Glassworks, Koyaanisqatsi (simply amazing)

    Well, there you go....

Just PLEASE don't send your answers to the list....

NP: MP3 of "Take the Time" live at the Foundation Forum with Jordan Rudess (sp?). AWESOME! NextP: MP3 of Dire Straits' "Money for Nothing" (I want my... I want my... I want my MTV) (Don't stand... Don't stand so... Don't stand so close to me)

Stranger things have happened (like Kid-Rock getting a record >deal). :)

This idea rather bothers me... I've always tried to figure out why the particular musical techniques were used on a song -- and what the meaning behind the music is. If the instrumental bits in "Surrounded" aren't meant to convey a theme, then perhaps that infamous review were DT is referred to as a potential "musical masturbaters" group is accurate. I'm not advocating the overanalysis of the music, but if the music isn't intended to convey an emotion, or feeling (as instrumentals like "Hell's Kitchen" and "Lost Without You" do -- both invoke in me distinct feelings through the sound,) then what, really, is the purpose? Titles become next to irrelevant (unless it's something like "This is the Bit Where JP and I Kick Ass.") If music doesn't rise in me emotions, then it's not really something I can find myself listening to -- and lyrics are not a prerequisite. I'm reminded of listening to Brahms with a friend and watching her begin to cry because the music was so moving... Music that conveys little or exceedingly trite emotion is not something I listen to for the sake of listening - it's background noise, not music, as far as I'm concerned. I like Aerosmith -- but the majority of their songs aren't really something I find myself enjoying *listening to*. I enjoy *hearing* the songs, but not listening to them... That's something I have always enjoyed about DT. The bits in, as previously mentioned, "Lie" and "Space-Dye Vest" and "Learning to Live" have

always conveyed a thematically consistent feeling in me. "Wait for Sleep" is another prime example -- as are most of the songs put out by DT. Granted, aCoS gets a bit vague in places, but I think that's just my fault... I've felt for a long time that DT manages to keep a feeling throughout the time changes, and the key signatures, and everything they do in each song -- the feeling is consistent with a theme, and the theme is, in most cases, very emotionally poignant for me.

Hm. I think I should have stuck a few paragraphs in there, instead of allowing it to overflow into one single line... ah, what the hell.

Now that I'm on line again (God, I love this cable modem stuff), this is probably a good time to start plugging my little open-source programming project again. While I don't have anything to do CD booklets yet, I do have software (that is still very much in development) to make cool cassette j-cards. It's for Linux, naturally. Anyone that cares to look, download, make suggestions, mail me diff files, etc, can check out http://www.dreamt.org/d-man/dSoft/jcard.html. Those of you who chose not to go to the Event show last Saturday night missed one hell of an Event (pardon the pun). Event and Crucible are two of the best prog bands New England has to offer, and they didn't disappoint. Event opened up first at about 9:30 or so. The crowd wasn't very large, which was a bummah, because people missed a great show. Event played a 9 song set, which included everything on Electric Skies, except A Sky Full of Stars. They also played two killer jams, one at the end of the Weatherman, and the other one at the end of Walk On, I think (I'm wrong, aren't I, Matt?). Event played with it's usual panache and style, with their killer riffs, groovy bass, great singing, and intricate drum playing.

Crucible came on at about 11ish. They played two songs, Over the Falls from Tall Tales, and a cover (the name escapes me). They sounded awesome, and I was hoping for a longer show, but fate intervened, and we got to see something special. It turned out the wife of the lead guitarist of Crucible, Dan Esposito, was in labor, and he had to book to the hospital, or miss all of the fun. So, Shaun Michaud from Event stepped in to play a bunch of covers with the rest of Crucible. They played a bunch of tunes (from Peter Gabriel to some cool bluesy jams). I thought it was a great job, and the jam that Shaun and the drummer and bassist from Crucible did was very awesome. Thanks for a great time, guys!

Event's next show is coming up on the 3rd of April at the Tiki Hut at Leominster. Be there or don't! Go to www.mysticfishook.com to check out their web page!
