As earlier reported Tourniquet has inked multi-album deal with metal blade,
more info can be found at http://members.aol.com/tourniqt/mblade.htm

What is intresting (at least IMO) is this part "..This will be a very
heavy, aggressive, and progressive album. Great sounds are anticipated with
Bill Metoyer producing.." Looks like they're getting back to the Pathogenic
    Ocular Dissonance sound.. HOORAY!

Actually, I think Liszt was a fabulous piano player. But the guy had a
huge advantage over everybody else - namely that he could reach two
octaves with his hands. Unfortunately, his music reflects that ability
and as such, nobody ELSE can play his music.

while I agree 100 percent that their fans were driven by the music and not
by sex appeal as, say, manudo was...I personally knew a 20 year old girl

Well, it is indeed nice to hear that my band is not the only progressive
    band in Russia.
We're called The Glazemaker, so far we're rehearsing our stuff - we
already have enough songs to make a complete album, but we want to
make those songs sound PERFECT, hope you guys get what I mean!
In the meantime our singer is practicing his English, because
we will be doing the whole album completely in English and we don't want the
    singer to sound shit!
And we're saving money to record our songs soon, it really takes BIG $$$
to make a recording in Russia, a quality recording I mean - not just a
    cheap 4 or 8-track demo.
We will be putting our web-page soon with the sound-clips, so far the only
    clips we have
are the songs played by me (bass) and our guitarist with the midi-tracks
    and a
    live-recording of one more song.
If you're curious to know more about what we're after, don't hesitate to
    mail me and
I will absolutely sure reply very soon!!!
Our influences are: DT (of course!!!), Rush (that's basically mine),
    Testament,
Blind Guardian, Satch, Stu Hamm, BLS, VTT and more..

    Take care and keep rockin'

Don't know if anybody else caught this, because I haven't seen anyone
    mention it.

    But . . .

Musician's Friend (mail order music business) is selling a line of John
Petrucci guitars. I don't know which model it is . . . must be the 4th
edition (looks kind of like the camaflouge one to me). They were in their
latest catalog I just got. About $1500? Can't remember.

Anyway, I know there are more people like me who wanted one of these and
live in rural areas that never get cool equipment like this.

So, if you never have gotten one, or want another, check them out! I don't
know how many of this edition they made (or how many Musician's Friend has),
so you might want to call for details rather than wait for the catalog.

I can find any info from the catalog if anyone needs it.

I was lucky enough to find the 1st edition when it first came out. Still
don't know how I did it, because I was late on the chase. Had one store
swear they were getting one, and it suddenly disappeared . . . Three weeks
down the drain. I was sure they were all gone by then, but I did find one.
Probably my most favorite guitar I've ever owned. So don't be afraid of
    ordering it by mail!

    See ya!

Hi again. First I want to say that I love Bartleby the Scrivener.
Incredible story. Very short too, so definitely read it if you haven't.
I'm not sure I see all of the comparisons to The Silent Man, that John
Wells? said and would be interested in hearing them. Interestingly enough,
Bartleby was not silent. If told to do something, he replied "I prefer not
to." He was silent in actions, but the lawyer/ employer/ narrator guy was
"silent". He didn't do anything. His entire staff had some problem or
other. He didn't say anything. There was a "great wall" between him and
his employees (both literally and figuratively). Wow, details are slowly
coming back to me. Guess it's just another way that Dream Theater is
amazing. I once learned that the 3 most popular literary references were
Shakespeare, the Bible, and there was something else. Sorry can't
remember. Anyone who knows me at all, knows I fell in love with Dream
Theater for the lyrics. One English prof I had way back said every and any
literary thing is based on sex. Not going to attempt a full analysis on
The Silent Man with that since 1) I prefer not to. 2) I have a lot of work
to do now. 3) Don't have the lyrics with me now 4) Who cares?? But S.
Freud would have a lot to say about silence and fear, masks and walls,
blame of the father or woman. It's all [a] complex. However you interpet
it, it's a terrific song. I remember lying awake late at night, back when
I lived on Long Island, and they'd play it on the radio back when 104.3
played good music. Sigh. Back to work. Take care.

    Yikes!!!

You know, I have been coveting a JPM100 for a while now and I just can't
justify spending over 1000 dollars for a guitar. It's robbery. No axe
is worth that much. I can understand paying a bit of money for a
guitar, but honestly folks. It hurts when I see guitar's that are
    selling at that price.

I'd be willing to bet that at least 500-700 of those dollars are there
because JP has his name on the guitar. It's too bad, because unless I
find a good condition used one, I don't think I would ever spend that
much. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to live with going out and getting
an RG, gutting the pickups and slapping in an Air Norton and a Steve
    Special .

Bach has good stuff too, but the best ones are really short, ie Jesu, Joy of Mans Desiring, Toccata and Fugue, Concerto for Harpsichord, Strings and Continuo in D major, But i see you used the word 'shred' so i feel inclined to say that Radhmaninoff could outshred anyone past, present and future! >>>>>

I'll have to agree with you on that one - RaChmaninoff could pretty much rip anyone apart. I have a disc of him playing his own creations, and it is just FUCKING AMAZING. "The man can wail!" - anyone catch that reference? 10 points to the first correct contestant...

Here in good old AZ I go to this Steinway-sponsored piano recital series at the Scottsdale center for the arts (my girlfriend has a Steinway D - lucky bitch :)), and they have some phenomenal pianists perform there. And if you want a guy who can wail, check out Glen Gould performing Bach's Goldberg Variations (which were originally written for harpsichord - he transcribed them for piano, which requires playing with his hands on top of one another much of the time). There are about 40? distinct short songs, and they're all pretty damn cool... Better yet, get the video...

Actually that's not Palpatine. That's Darth Sidious. Palpatine is not a dark Jedi in this ep. As a matter of fact SENATOR Palpatine can be seen in the trailer (still played by Ian Mcdarmand! yes!) as the snively little guy who says "I think, your highness, we shall have to surrender to Federation control for the time being." Vote online for your favorite Dream Theater songs at http://www.freevote.com/booth/dreamt

I set this up since there was a lack of Dream Theater voting booths, but 50,000 of those 5 annoying guys that make a lot of money (you know who I am talking about, but if I see their name one more time I will puke). So c'mon lets have a good time people (James LaBrie -- Once in a LIVEtime) and vote for your favorite. If I neglected a song that is your fave, just submit it and I will go about approval for it.

I'm not so sure about this, only because he's one of the three remaining original members of the band. I'd think that his opinion would carry as much weight as John's or Mike's.

Then again, in any band situation, shouldn't it all be equal, no matter what? Maybe, in Derek's situation, John, Mike, John and James each had a quarter of the vote.

In any event, I won't say I can't see DT being ruled by one or two guys, but I will say that I'd be surprised if that was the case. Maybe Mr. Portnoy himself can shed some light on the subject for us...?

Rahul inquired: > The good Mr. Parmet (do you pronounce that French-like? Parmay?

That would be Parmette, I believe (it's only been 24 years since French class). Vous n'est pas une belle jeune fille :)

    > How much cheese do you eat? :) )>

Stay downwind and find out, boyeeeeeeeee!

    > I remember hearing about this. Was this not the impetus behind > Jordan and Rod collaborting?

It was. Go to either http://www.mediusvision.com/jordan or http://www.mediusvision.com/rod/ for the goods.

    > They stunned themselves during the jam

No humans were harmed in the making of the jam :)

Also, for sounds Jordan's made other than with LTE/RPM/Dregs, I suggest checking his site out, rather quickly. Not sure how long these are gonna be up there, but he threw some samples up from a band he was in in 1980 called "Speedway Blvd." Interesting stuff, considering the year it came out. Some of the sounds predate that 'hair/cock rock era' sound by a few years :))) And there's stuff from his '93 solo release "Listen". Some sweet Emerson-like prog runs in there ("Listen to the Voice").

This guy is gonna be all OVER the next DT album with his breadth of sounds. I'm not through with LTE or RPM just yet :) Yes ok, on DT's next one, there'll be some similarities in sound to what we've already heard. I also imagine there's gonna be some whacked out shit....k, here we go... :)

Picture them in the studio with the guy's tearing up something insane, you know what I mean (but you will :):

Kevin Labrie is warming up his vocal chords by shooting 30 foot flames out his mouth. He learned this when he was a freak up in the Canadian circus.

John Myung has figured out how to play a bass note below 1 Hz :) Oscilloscope manufacturers go back to the drawing board and rethink the law of physics...

JP decides to make a song that'll make "The Mirror" sound like a lullaby. He got every knob maxed, everything plugged into everything else, causing short circuits, smoke, fire, etc. This is just too weak though. He takes out a Sawzall and begins literally shredding the guitar, quickly, before the recording equipment completely ceases to function. He has planned the intended emotion he wishes this piece to convey. Besides the nice overtones he gets as the the Sawzall penetrates the pickup, he gets some additional chunk to the overall sound by mic-ing the Sawzall.

He just e-mailed me in fact saying "We're waiting for some feedback (pun intended) on this to see if we should do another take, perhaps mounting the Sawzall to automagically perform the shred, freeing my hands up to aim the Laws Rocket Launcher at the ensemble at the right moment"....

Mike? He's tough, cuz he already does it all :) Hmmm... Limbs flailing, all in different time signatures. He uses the 'Animal' labelling to his advantage and begins hitting the ride cymbal with his head at the same time (forhead coming down on the top, back of the cranium hits the underside on the way back up). Several Indian tribes, with an affinity for the beat, emerge from the past and begin dancing.

During all of this controlled chaos, Jordan hits some sequence that causes the Kurzweil processor to crash (I warned him not to install the Intel patch :) and it produces some totally whacked sound.

Mike and John, fully immersed in their "creations", look up with that spent, dripping blood look - similar to when a tiger has just finished tearing apart a Thompson's Gazelle and realizes once again where it is - take note of what Jordan has just done and go "I like it, let's use it" :)

    Peace! Jon
