Someone tell AyamiYuki to get in touch with reality, and stop sending
worthless untrue shit to the jam. Mariah Carey does NOT have a 7 octave
range. Go to your piano and hit a C1, that's the lowest C on the piano,
    and then C8, the highest C. That's a 7 octave range. I don't know about
anyone else, but I'm a double bass, and I can't sing a C1, so certainly no
woman could sing that low. And being able to sing a C8 is just as
ridiculous for a soprano as a C1 is for me. And to be able to sing BOTH
of those extreme ranges? Come on, Ayami, get with the real world.

It seems like there have been a few postings of
'wishful' supergroups. I think I'll add mine on this
    one.

    Group 1: Mike Keneally-Tony Levin-Rod Morgenstein
Geesh I bet this would come out all whacked.

    Group 2; Alex Lifeson-Dave Meros(from Spocks
    Beard)-Kevin Moore-Vinnie Colaiuta
I think there would be some really well structured
songs to come out of this group. Plus the groove would
really be there because of the awesome rhythm section.

On a side note, where can I order Haji's Kitchen?

    >hard disk recorders (like the VS 880 and 1680) if anyone is knowledgeable
    >and wants to help me out a bit.

My band recorded our first album with a VS 880. It was great,
'cept for only 4 inputs (the 1680 has 8). we had to submix the drums
before recording them, and that was a pain, but after that, it was all
good. These Rolands are great 'cause of the virtual tracks (a lifesaver
for submixing) and non-linear editing. In one of our songs, there was a
drum flub for one beat, so we copied and pasted the previous measure over
the screwup, and it's totally seamless, I can't even find where we did it
anymore. You can't do this kind of thing on a tape-based system like ADAT.
One caveat, however, is the external storage you choose to use. We
used Iomega Jaz, and it worked great for about six months, then broke. I
believe we've been thru 2 jaz and one zip drive with this thing. I would
recommend getting a large external SCSI drive, which should be way more
    reliable than the Iomega stuff.
We also did a demo a few years back with a guy who had two first
generation ADATs. they worked pretty well, 'cept one broke (this also
happended in a product review for the ADAT XT, so you may want to be
careful). There's less compression on ADAT, so the sound quality should be
better, but our stuff sounded great on the VS 880.
I don't have any experience with PC recording, but with most of the
programs, I believe that you can have midi stuff sync'd in, which can be
pretty cool. But beware, you need a really huge, really fast hard drive
for this. If you don't have SCSI, you can just about fuhgeddaboudit (but
then, SCSI cards aren't all that expensive).
Hope I've helped. Oh, yeah, in the new Electronic Musician,
there's a review for the VS 1680, so you may want to check it out. if you
want more in-depth info about the VS 880, lemme know, and I'll email you
    privately.

    Hey ya everyone...
I was wondering if Meanstreak ever released any CDs or anything, if so,
where could I find them? For those of you don't know, a few marital
partners of OFB where the members of Meanstreak. I think :) Anyway, if
anyone knows, please let me know. Thanks!

As for English, Bartleby sucks I thought :) And frankly I can't see too
many connections to The Silent Man, so I'd be quite interested in having it
explained. As for other DT english connections though, how about Pull Me
Under=Hamlet....I realize it's been said, I just felt like pointing it out.
Hell, the last lines of the song is a direct quote. But yes, I'm quite
interested in other prog rock/metal band's connections to literature, not
only from DT. Anyone who feels like discussing it, please email me. I'm
actually making a compilation CD for my english teacher (hate the class, but
the guy loves prog so I figure I'll be nice) so if someone comes up with
    anything, lemme know :) Thanks!

yeah, but scsi drives ARE :) i did some pc-based recording and i had no
problem with my 5400 rpm EIDE drive, but i only did 3 tracks. I've heard
if you want much more than that you'll have to go with 7800 rpm or
better yet, scsi. i'm planning on recording a full cd on my computer so
i'll probably be saving for a scsi drive in the near future. hey, it's
cheaper than buying a hard disk recorder or ADAT. software: the one i use
and recommend is Software Audio Workshop (currently at v3.2 i believe). it
supports DirectX plugins and stuff. Quite good. Perhaps Subtlerage will
throw in his comments, i know he does all of his recording on his PC. moo.

No that is Darth MAUL's face in the first part. Sidious is the one in the

How about their new re-releases with extra tracks. Are

I don't know about that (I'm not arguing with you, I just don't know enough

it's good, but not as good as demanufacture and obsolete. most say
demanufacture is their best, but i like obsolete more. demanufacture is
very double-bass heavy, very fast. i love it, but it all sorta sounds the
same after a while. just a little. obsolete on the other hand is just
overall. and its still got fast double bass for those who listen
for that. one thing i love about fear factory is their use of both heavy
growling vocals and melodic vocals. the last two tracks of Obsolete,
resurection and timelessness, are, quite simply, beautiful. strange to
hear that describing a fear factory song but its true. there's only the
melodic singing on those 2 tracks. obsolete is a concept album, telling a
story set in the future, involving man's dependence on computers and
stuff. they love to write about high-tech futuristic stuff like that. and
it kicks ass. so i would reccommend you get obsolete, unless you go for
really fast double-bass-heavy music, in which case demanufacture should be
your first choice. but no matter which you get, you should get the other
one soon after :) as far as the extra tracks, i just got the Obsolete
digipak re-release thing and it's pretty cool, and wasn't really much more
expensive - i got it for $16 at a store where most cds are $13-16. And the
extra tracks are quite cool. There's even one (where evil dwells) that
must have been written around the demanufacture era. it sounds like that
    style.

so there's my really long, rambling reccomendation. hope it helps. no
matter which of those two you get, i dont think you'll be disappointed.
they both kick tons of ass. moo.

Obsolete is the latest and most representative of their current sound.
Electronic triggers used tastefully and sparringly on certain tracks.
Really heavy groove rhythms like Edgecrusher. Sequenced keyboards are used
    for mood enhancement.

I would say start with this one.

Soul of a New Machine is largely grindcore/deathmetal but includes a couple
of their classics which are Scapegoat, Martyr, and Scumgrief... Scapegoat
live is like lighting a power keg and letting it all fall down.

    Hey Jam....

As far as Fear Factory go.... I would definitely recommend 'Obsolete' by far... If you like that try their older stuff... But if you want the techno sound that Obsolete has but with the death-ish type vocals and guitar, try their remix EP 'Fear Is The Mindkiller'. Whatever you do, avoid Remanufacture, because true to the title it's nothing but a techno rehash of Demanufacture....

    - Since Ive Been Loving You (DT live in Philly 12-27-98). Damn, I was at this show, & this was one of the highlights for me. Im a huge Zep fan & I thought this was way better than the one found on LZ III. Whoever was at this show, or any X-mas show, werent you blown away every single minute?

    - Heart of the Sunrise/Innocence Faded (10/28/95). Im a big Yes fan too, so I instantly dl'ed this one. JP does a great job on Howes parts, but is it just me, or is MP off on the drums? Anyway, I know DT jammed with Steve Howe at the Ronnie Scotts show, does anyone have a bootleg of it that they are willing to trade? It would be cool to hear the whole Yes medley.

    - Lie (9/9/94). Jordan Rudess on keys. Didnt like it. Was it just the way it was recorded, or was JR's keys too loud at certain times in the song? I'd like to hear some peoples thoughts about the mp3, because I was expecting something really good from Rudess, & after hearing this, it kinda turned me off...

-Space Dye Vest (Kevin Moore Demo). My favorite Dream Theater song in demo form. I was expecting just Moore & the piano, what I got was basically the whole song in complete form! Now I really understand why people say this is Kevins song more than DT's

-Tears (Ronnie Scotts). Good version of a great Rush song. Has DT covered any other Rush song? I would die to hear them pump out a great 2112.

    - Where Are you Now (Irving Plaza 98). I downloaded this because when the holiday shows were reviewed on the jam, everyone was raving about this song. Well, to tell you the truth, I was kind of dissapointed. The only thing I found good about this was JP's solos. Other than that, I dont find anything else to rave about, although the harmony vocals were a nice touch.

    - Wednesday the Sky/Hay Day May Day (Chroma Key outtakes/demos). Great tracks! Pick them up if you get the chance. Does anybody else out there love the Dead Air for Radios album?? Is Kevin writing material for a new album by any chance?

Well, thats all that Ive dl'ed so far. Also, I need some help trying to find Live at the Marquee. Is there any kind soul here that could pick this cd up for me if its around your area? I would greatly appreciate it if you could, just email me privately. Well, thanks for your time, its always a pleasure reading every single digest, you guys rock!
