    >On hardrive PC digital recording...

Why not just get a shitload of RAM? I've got 256MB on my beastly machine
and don't have any problems... I haven't tried recording yet though. :)
Something I need to start doing. I would think that setting up a RAMdrive
would easily defeat the problems of harddrive running. Get an extra 128 MB
of RAM and set up a RAMdisk and you should be able to utilize that to your
advantage, I would think. I've got a 5400 RPM Ultra DMA HD in and haven't
had any problems at all without a RAMdrive... It's just a thought. It
might speed you up. :) 128MB 100Mhz SDRAM costs like $300 less than a 9GB
    SCSI drive.

    >"Shine" when Geoffry (SP?) Rush "played" "Hungarian Rhapsody"

I was watching some movie once, I can't remember what it was called, but it
was old, where Richard Dreyfuss was playing along with some ensemble on
piano, playing some really complicated piano part, and the camera hit him
and I for the life of me I have to believe he was actually playing it.
Either that or he's the best piano faking actor. Most just sit there and
tiddle around and I have to gag at how fake it looks. I get bitched at alot
because I always check that on movies. :) They were hiding it well, but it
looked like Lerch was actually playing a cool spanish guiltar part on the
New Addams Family a week or two ago as well. hehehe. Geoffrey Rush is a
    killer actor, BTW.

    Where was I? Ah yes.

128 megs of ram would only hold about 12 minutes of audio, total. if you've got 6 tracks thats about 2 minutes each. 12 tracks, 1 minute. good idea, but you'd need a shitload of ram. moo.

I think it's safe to say they've all been retired, with the possible exceptions of "Ytse Jam" and "The Killing Hand". As to whether I think they *should* play that material ... it is part of their catalogue, and part of their history, so I don't think the entire album should be dropped altogether, but it's really a matter of whether they feel those songs still represent what they're about, if you know what I mean.

Hi everyone, I know this is short notice, but two great new prog-metal bands will be playing in New York City at a club called Downtime Friday night, March 26. Alchemy X is having its CD release party for its first CD, "A Delicate Balance". Fans of Dream Theater will definitely like this band. Also on the bill, and headlining, is Aztec Jade, who some of you saw at Powermad. Again, another band Dream Theater fans would love.

Doors open at 9 p.m., with Alchemy X going on around 10:30 followed by Aztec Jade. Another band will open the show. Downtime is located on 30th Street between 7th and 8th Ave., just four blocks from Penn Station.

I would prefer not to argue, as we have seen where that road leads. But i would like to put in that IMO Rachmaninoff is superior to Liszt, on the piano. No one can touch his speed and his stamina. He wrote the fastest piano piece ever, the Rach 3 (aka Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Op. 30). At a total time of 34:32, and it has been called by many, "the hardest in the world." It has more notes per second than any other concerto, and has some "big fat chords!" (these notes are from an excerpt in the 'Shine' soundtrack, jewel insert) "Cyril Smith, David Helfgott's (who performed the pieces in the movie) teacher at the Royal College, compare the physical effort of playing it to shoveling ten tons of coal. David's performance of this piece at the Royal College of Music, in 1969 is remembered to this day by his contemporaries as an extraordinary event, one in which earned him the rarity of a standing ovation from his teachers."

I know this doesn't really tell you how good Rach was, but i have heard alot of his pieces, including a CD that recaptured several of his recordings (made on rolls for use with reproducing pianos). These recordings happend between 1919-1942, and just recently have they found a way to take these recording rolls and put them into a computer program and let it reproduce the pieces onto disc.

I find his pieces (as a whole) moving and a joy to listen to. But when i listen to the piano, it's as if i'm listening to God, playing. He's fast, smooth, & never makes a mistake. I have a version of him playing Rimsky-Korsakov's "Flight of the Bumblebee" souly on piano, and it's the fastest most beautiful rendition of it that i've ever heard. If anyone wants further info on which CD's to buy, just mail me and i'll be glad to send you the names and cd numbers.

yep, John is right. It is Senator Palpatine who says "Wipe them out. All of them." The whole point of the war, if you know your SW history, is that Senator Palpatine, a dark jedi, has been building armies of warriors, dark Jedi, ships, etc..and is now, announced himself Emperor Palpatine, resigned from the Old Republic, and the war you see in the trailer, is him taking over. Remember that Emporer Palpatine IS the ONE who starts the Federation, so how could he counsel the Princess to abide by his own army "...for the time being." Thus leading toward "A New Hope', "Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi" where Palpatine IS Emporer. The man saying "i think your highness, we shall have to surrender.." is another Senator.

I really like Demanufacture. the newest one, Obsolete, is pretty cool, but the words are kinda cheezy; it's a concept album about some weird destructive badguy machine/cyborg thing breaking out of jail/the looney bin and causing all kinds of shit (at least from what I gathered from listening to it for 10 min in the store). I actually don't own either, my friend does, but if I ever find them in a used CD place for under $10, I wouldn't hesitate to buy them. this isn't really too much my type of music, so I don't want to be paying close to $20 for a new copy. but if you're in the right mood, nothin' beats Fear Factory!

they guy who actually played all of the songs in the movie, minus the Schumann song and a few of the score pieces, was David Helfgott. He played the Rachmaninoff and Liszt parts. Although not a great as the composers, Helfgott, is an AMAZING pianist.

Wrong! And I have proof! (sorry for dragging this out even more for those who don't care.) Go to www.theforce.net and go their prequel section. move the scroll bar to the right a little and look at the top. There's two wavs labeled: The Darths speak! Download sidious.wav and... bam bam bam the line is... "wipe them out... all of them." More proof. page down all the way on that page till you get to the section marked "SW Insider Pics" and look at the pic "Palpatine and Shmi" and... there's that Senator. THe one you said wasn't Palp. Blah. One of the things that excites me most is that in the new movies (at least this one) is that we get to see Palpatine (my fav character and the nick I've been using on IRC forever) as a SENATOR. BEFORE he reveals his true colors. The guy in the robes who looks just like Palp is Darth Sidious.

close. Edgecrusher is a dude who objects to the dependence humans are developing on machines, and he is jailed for "anti-social behavior" related to these beliefs. He breaks out of prison, and the cops send a robot, Smasher/Devourer, out to find him (an example of their dependence on machines - dont bother looking, just send the robot and consider the matter taken care of). Several days later, Edgecrusher watches as A person addresses a crowd, condemning the weaposn of mass destruction that world leaders use to maintain their power. The police then proceed to provoke the crowd, driving them to violence and giving the cops an excuse to attack them. The man sees what is happening and knows he's next and pours gasoline over himself and when the cops approach him he sets himself on fire. Edgrusher watches from a distance and this whole scene further lowers his hope for humanity, driving him to arrive at the conclusion: Man is obsolete. As he continues to flee, he finds himself in a long-abandoned church. Here he ponders religion, or the lack thereof.

The ending is sorta confusing, and more open to interpretation. I think he continues to think about the decrepid state of humankind, finally deciding that there's no hope for man and committing suicide. it doesn't state that explicitly tho, so i may be wrong.

My opinion: I dont think it's cheesy at all - i felt the lyrics were damn good. and the music fits it perfectly i think - especially how the last 2 songs get progressively softer and more melodramatic. timelessness is such a perfect ending song i always feel bad putting in the next cd cuz after that song i just feel i should stop :) thats one thing i dont like about the version of Obsolete with bonus tracks... timelessness ends and then they go into that old 80s song, Cars. hehe.

I have found limited info about this band on the net other than a review at the BNR metal pages and ordering info for their last CD at amazon.com. I have found a webpage for Jarzombek's new band, Spastic Ink....does anyone know of a Watchtower homepage or has anyone even heard of this band? Petrucci spoke VERY HIGHLY of Jarzombek as a guitarist, and because of that I really wanna check him out.

That was most likely Mr. Holland's Opus (the movie that got me believing that I was actually a movie scorer at heart as opposed to the music teacher that I wanted to become). The very beginning of that just blew me away. Dreyfuss MUST be a piano player, because not only was he on with the orchestra's piano, he was in the right key (G major) and doing all the right articulations/finessing. This movie is TRULY one of the best music-based movies I have EVER seen, if not THE best.

Actually, Korg, you're not the only person that does that. I'm a piano player, and I ALWAYS look at what the person is doing on the keyboard when they do that kind of thing. Usually, they don't even show the person's hands, which kinda turns me off to the whole thing. But when they do, and the person's not actually playing anything like the music that's going, that is one of my biggest movie pet peeves.

An interesting note: If you've ever seen "In the Line of Fire" with Clint Eastwood, there's a part where he's playing some jazz tune in a closed-up bar. I was blown away when I saw this, because not only is he playing what the recording was, it WAS him. They actually recorded his playing and used it in the scene - it wasn't just some studio musician playing. That brought my respect level or Mr. Eastwood up by about a third.
