It's funny this came up - I listened to a short piece by Liszt just
before I read this. It's called "Nuages Gris," I think, and it's very
atypical of what I think of when Liszt is mentioned. No piano
pyrotechnics, just slow and pretty :)

Yesterday night, I had the pleasure to watch a workshop by Steve Morse, man
    what a three-head monster !!

Due to a high ceiling theater, the sound was bad as sh*t, (and he made it
clear that the sound was really bad),
he tried to give his best (he wasn't playing with his full gear, he just
used the volumes pedals, a delay unit and 3 MesaBoogies that sounded like
    crap at the theater), but...

He played Highland Wedding, Tumeni Notes (with a standing ovation by a crowd
of 700 ppl ), some excerpts from a DP songm, among others and answered
    hundreds of questions.

    Now the DTC:

Somehow the most cool part was, when a dude asked who are the guitar players
that he most admires and listens on a regular basis, and the very first name
    was John Petrucci !! :)

At the end of the workshop, another kid asked him something (but I missed
what the kid asked), and he grabbed the mic and once again said *John
Petrucci*, and just showed a big smile !!

All right, here's how she goes...

The guy with the double-bladed Sith 'saber is Darth Maul. He fights
    Kenobi in the trailers.

The Senator that Queen Padme speaks to is Palpatine.

The "Begin landing your troops" guy is Darth Sidious.

Now, word 'round the campfire is that Palpatine _is_ Sidious, or
possibly they are clones of one another. Either way, sources say that
Ian McDiarmid, who plays Palpatine, is playing Sidious.

So put that in your pipes and smoke it, all y'all.

Oh yeah, and DT rules. When the heck is Mike gonna throw us a bone about
the new album? Hell, a fake working title would satisfy me...

Regarding CD burning from hard drives:

Have lots of RAM (256M in an Ultra 10... oh yeah)

Have a fast hard drive... high rpms, 9600 is good.

Use Fast and Wide SCSI. IDE blows for high-throughput applications...
you get bottlenecks a-plenty and CD-Rs are not forgiving if you screw
    up.

    There, that's my 2 cents. G'day all...

I think Darth Sidious and Senator/Emperor Palpatine are the same person, the Phantom Menace. That's how he can be telling the Queen that should resolve themselves to Federation control and be part of the Federation attack, he's the Phantom Menace.

    Just a thought, tk

You know darn well that DT does NOT put out. Well except for Derek, but he didn't join 'till after 86, and he's not with us anymore, so it doesn't matter, does it? ;)

Now. On to business. :) Power of Omens will play a show this Saturday, March 27, at Midieval Knights in San Antonio, TX. The show starts at 7:30, and ticket prices are something like $3 or $4. Sorry kids, but no minors allowed. More info. and directions can be found at the Midieval Knights Web site: http://www.flash.net/~fatesend/index.html. I'll be there, and I'll expect a fair showing from the TX 'Jammers to support this great band!

Last thing. Some of you remember that in '97 I started a campaign to get DT radio airplay in support of FII. I wrote a little Web page and gathered close to 100 radio stations from across North America. Since they're in the studio right now, I thought this would be a great opportunity to update my Web page with new radio stations, up-to-date Web addresses, and add phone numbers for the stations.

If you're interested in helping, visit http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Set/5039 and navigate to the Help DT Get Radio Airplay page. Then follow the instructions and fill out the form. Oh yeah, and mind the dust. I'm slowly revising my pages. :)

Yes, but you don't need to play back all the tracks if your recording onto another track, also you don't really need to have it played back in top quality mode. The program i've used cuts the audio quality when your'e recording since it's only really required as a guide and although it sounds awful, it is still good enough to get your track down.

Ok, here are some of my ideas for super groups...

Geoff Tate - Vocals John Petrucci - Lead & Rhythm Guitar Joe Satrianni - Lead & Rhythm Guitar Keith Emerson - Keyboards Cliff Burton (r.i.p.) - Bass Neil Peart - Drums & Percussion David Cross - Violin (for those of you who don't know who this genius is, he played violin for King Crimson during their Wetton/Fripp/Bruford/Cross era which makes up the albums Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Red, and Starless and Bible Black...an amazing violin player)

And then the more 'mellow' super group

Freddie Mercury (r.i.p.) - Vocals Adrian Belew - Lead & Rhythm Guitar Robert Fripp - Lead & Rhythm Guitar (I'm sorry if I'm a bit biased with Crimson, but if you have Fripp you must have Belew and vice versa) Mick Karn (formerly of Japan) - Bass Bill Bruford - Drums Ian MacDonald - Flute

    And then finally,

Kate Bush - Vocals Frank Zappa (r.i.p.) - Lead & Rhythm Guitars Eric Johnson - Lead & Rhythm Guitars Trey Gunn - Warr Guitar Roger Waters - Bass Jamie Muir - Percussion (played Percussion on Crimson's Larks' Tongues in Aspic....was one of the reasons it is arguably Crimson's best album to date) Keith Moon (r.i.p.) - Drums Jordan Rudess - Keyboards Robby Steinhardt - Violin Mel Collins - Sax Chris Degarmo - Background Vocals (sorry chris...you're an amazing guitarist but you're no Zappa or Eric Johnson) Peter Sinfield - Words and Illuminations

As far as I know, there's no guarantee yet that John Myung will be part of the new Platypus album... Last time I asked Derek, he told me John would be a better person to ask. :) Also, there is Dream Theater's recording schedule to consider. They'll be in the studio through May, and Platypus is supposed to be recording in May/June. I'm *not* saying he won't be on it, but I guess we'll have to wait and see...

Anyway, make sure to come to the Platypus IRC chat with Derk & Rod this Sunday. Details can be found on UACM under "News/Platypus"... I will also put a little reminder in this week's newsletter (check out my sig for information on how to join).

What it seems some of you may not be realizing, is that you need your hard drive to be as fast as possible for recording. 128 MB or 256 MB of RAM will help keep your system from taxing itself into a blue screen, but your hard drive (Especially 5400 or less RPM) can't play back that many tracks simultaneously. THIS is why people go with SCSI... so they can record as many tracks as possble simultaneously (largely affected by RAM) and play back as many a possible at a time (largely hard drive related.) If you go to the Event/Echo web site, you should be able to DL their "Echo Reporter" which is sort of like a system auditor, which will tell you how many tracks you can expect to be able to play back (Digital Audio, not midi) simultaneously with your system, assuming you were using one of their audio cards (Gina, Darla, Layla, etc). I found that doing even 2 or 3 tracks on my old system would get extremely cumbersome, even though I had plenty of RAM. Now I have a UATA66 controller, so I'm approaching scsi speeds, with an IDE drive, and Echo reports that I should be able to get 62 simultaneous playback tracks. That's where it's at! :)

    >ram is NOT and never will be hard drive space..

Actually, there is a tool you can use to set partition of a certain amount of RAM as hard drive space. It's called RAMdrive. I was messing around with it last night, though, and for some reason I couldn't get it to allocate me more than 32MB anyway. :\ It griped at me when I asked for 64 or 128. Considering the difference of 12ns seek time for the RAM and the 300ms seek (I think) on the hard drive, the RAMdrive is just a >little< faster. Windows 95 does jack shit for RAM optimization, so having 256MB RAM is a waste as it is. :P I should know. :(

As far as musical actors... Dana Carvey is a notable drummer and that Charo chick is supposedly one of the world's top ranking classical guitar players or something. There's that one PlayMate from last year who is a wicked violinist (what's her name? I want her... album). David Hasselhoff's a huge guitar player in Germany or something (so I hear) and we've yet to hear what Steven Seagull can do. :) And uh, Bill Clinton plays sax and the skinflute.

The Phantom Menace are the Sith Lords, who were kept secret till now. The Battle Droids revolt and attack, and waiting in the wings behind them, unbeknownst to everyone, are the Sith Lords. I'm pretty sure that's the reason for the title.
