Actually, double that, since most tracks are mono, and the figure you
quotes (~10 megs / minute) is for stereo audio.
Still, 128 megs is not enough for serious recording, which is why I don't
recommend the Roland units that record to a 100 meg Zip disk. Even with
2/1 audio compression, if you use a lot of tracks (even if not
simultaneous, think of multiple takes) you use up that 100 megs really fast.

Possible "Phantom Menace" spoiler:
Hey, that most definitely is Senator Palpatine advising the current "weird
hair chick" ;) to surrender to the Federation. No one (but, presumably
the smart ones in the audience) knows that he is also Darth Sidious. Same
Guy, secret Identity. ooooh.
More on recording:
Sure, getting a lot of RAM is neat, but even a basic SCSI drive (not fast,
wide, or ultra anything) is fast enough. The Akai DPS-12 has an internal
basic Jaz drive and it's fast enough to play back 12 (mono) tracks of CD
audio simultaneously. Basic SCSI drives are a lot cheaper than RAM, heck,
even Ultra2 Wide SCSI drives are cheaper than an equivalent amount of RAM.

Couldn't you also mix down all the tracks that you've already recorded onto one temporary track, then play back that one track as you record the next track? For example, if you have drums already recorded, and you're ready to record bass, you could mix all the separate drum tracks onto one track. Then let the bass player listen to that one track as he records. Finally, you could delete the temporary drum mix track. Or maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. But it seems like this would work.

A couple digests back someone said something about a spock's beard tour in the northeast U.S. I checked their site and didn't see anything about it. The only concert plans they said they had was for NEARFest. Just wonderin, because I really would love for this tour to be truth since i can't make it to NEARFest.

Ron Jarzombek was a founding member of Watchtower, released 2 cd's, Energetic Disassembly and Control And Resistance, the musicians that played with him were equally SICK and technical, with their singer leaving the band after the 2nd album to form "Dangerous Toys", named after a Watchtower song....Eventually the band broke up, with Ron having meanwhile serious hand problems, but later on he managed to recuperate and moved on to form the band that now is know as Spastic Ink, with their first album being released along with members of Riot. The second album is due to be released anytime now, but the line up is uncertain.
Anyway, the site that mr. Dr. Mosh was talking about, is http://www.spasticink.com
so you can find all the info regarding Watchtower and Spastic Ink there...

Attention Tourniquet fans--
Tourniquet co-founders Guy Ritter (vocals) and Gary Lenaire (guitar) have= formed a new band called 'Echo Hollow' and have released their first alb= um, entitled 'Diet of Worms', on Geneva records. Bill Metoyer produced = the work. For more information on the band/ordering the CD, go to:
www.tomorrowland.com/echo
Early reports described the band's style as heavily reminiscent of classi= c Tourniquet (first 3 albums).....and having recently received a copy of = the CD, I would say that this statement is indeed true in some respects! = As a long-time Tourniquet fan, I was very pleased with the album's conten= ts. The album is heavy, intense and, of course, creative. Guy's vocal = styles are the same ones he used while in Tourniquet, with additional sin= ging dexterity thrown in at times.....while Gary's crunching guitars and = wah-heavy leads are in the vein of his work on 'Vanishing Lessons' and = the more melodic works on the earlier albums. Yes!! While I was disapp= ointed that there were only 7 tracks, 4 of the tracks last over six minut= es and one of the tracks is a cool cover of U2's "Sunday Bloody Sunday". = In terms of the other band members, L.A. studio drummer Matt Rosenblum, = while, of course, no Ted Kirkpatrick, delivers powerful drumming that exc= eeded my expectations. Bassist Matt Fallentine holds down the low-end. = One of the recent issues of HM Music Magazine (free access to issues on-= line, but I don't have the URL handy, sorry) has an interview with the = band.

You can find the tentative tour dates on the Spock's Beard mailing list website... http://www.spocksbeard.net

If youre talking about the song off the sound track for The Faculty..well theyre a bunch of artists from current bands..and that song its NOT techno at all.... wtf does ppl here think is techno anyways?! I mean the cover is a piece of shit..but it bothers me that lots of people on this list refer to techno to anything that is sequenced, or sounds sort of computer-aided.. IMO Chromakey is more techno-oriented than that ABitW cover

Hey everyone,
I have a big favor to ask of those of you who were able to attend the Christmas '98 shows this past winter.
If you have either a ticket stub or a copy of the set list (and by copy, I mean the set list in Portnoy's handwriting...not just any ol' text with the set list), please contact me. What I need are:
Birch Hill (ticket stub / set list) Philadelphia (set list -- I can't find mine!) New Haven (ticket stub / set list) New York (set list) Poughkeepsie (ticket stub / set list)
If you happen to have a scanner, a high-res scan would be good enough for me. Otherwise, I can give you info on where to send the stub or set list so it can be scanned and sent back to you.
Also, if you have some interesting memoribilia from the shows like a poster outside the venue promoting the show, a newspaper article, or something else along those lines, contact me.
Oh, and there will be some sort of payback to be determined if any of you can help me out! PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE!!!
/me gets on his knees... ..on second thought, I'll just stand here at beg.

In a message dated 99-03-25 21:31:20 EST, you write:
<< Hey ya everyone... I was wondering if Meanstreak ever released any CDs or anything, if so, where could I find them? For those of you don't know, a few marital partners of OFB where the members of Meanstreak. I think :) Anyway, if anyone knows, please let me know. Thanks! >>
Yes, Meanstreak released one album in the late 80's (1987?) called "Roadkill". I don't know about any other online music store, but a mail order place I deal with frequently, RAM Music, has it listed on their web site (www.rammusic.com) as being in stock for $16.99. If would get it ASAP if you're going to do so, because it's out of print now, I believe.
Anyway, I have the album on cassette, and it's not too bad. 80's power metal type stuff.... it's obvious by listening to the album that the band had some serious talent. The impression that I got was that they needed to fine-tune their writing skills. It's unfortunate that they never got around to releasing another official album, because their ensuing demos got better and better. Some years ago, I bought a couple of demo tapes from a guy on Prodigy (my first exposure ever to the online world) who happened to be dating the lead singer, so he obviously had connections. They had a 4 track demo released in 1989, which the guy taped for me because they were sold out of original copies. This 4 track had some really good stuff on it, including a power-ballad type tune called "The Other Side" which reminds me heavily of the legendary "Beyond the Realms Of Death" by Priest. I would have loved to hear a better recording of this demo.
In 1992(?), they released another 4 track demo, this one produced by none other than Mike Portnoy. I have an original copy of this demo tape, and it ROCKS. I love it... it features a blistering version of Heart's "Barracuda" that just kills. As far as I know, the band split up while in the process of trying to secure a new record deal with this latest demo. It's a damn shame too, because they were just starting to develop their writing style and playing... oh, what could have been. :-)
I was first exposed to Meanstreak when they opened for OFB back in 1993 at the Chance in Poughkeepsie, and they really impressed the hell out of me. I was lucky enough to be at that show because I don't think they opened for DT at any other time. I didn't know the band's relationship with DT, and I remember being kinda surprised to see MP on the side of the stage air drumming to Meanstreak's tunes. Now, it all makes sense. :-) (For those who don't know, Mike ended up marrying Marlene the bass player, and JP married Rena the guitar player.)
Well, that's about all I know about Menastreak. If anyone else has anything to add, please feel free. Are there any other recordings of theirs floating around? (Mike?)
Gotta run.... Matt T.
