Could you make at least one band that featured all healthy'n'livin'

     My dream band would be:

    Steve Smith - drums
    Stu Hamm - basses
    Derek Sherinian - keys
John Scofield or/and Steve Morse - guitars

Watchtower is, for a lot of people, (including me) one of the best (maybe
the best) progressive metal band ever. They were the pioneers of techical
progressive metal,as Mosh said, in a time when most bands were copying
Priest/Maiden or playing glam stuff. Their music is the most complex shit
I've ever heard. They require all the listener's concentration. DT have
always showed great respect for this band, so have done most progressive
bands of our times. You should hear the drummer.Energetic Disassembly was
first released from Zombo recs. Control and Resistance, their best, was
released from Noise. Sieges Even are another story.........

The unit you're referring to does something like 5:1 compression as a
standard, though 2:1 is an option. 5:1 can do okay on a zip, but 2:1 will
    eat em and smile.

Proprietary systems like this are designed for this purpose. The
Rolands with internal drives all use IDE, and get excellent performance out
of them. They're streamlined for this purpose though. A computer doesn't
    react the same.

    > Basic SCSI drives are a lot cheaper than RAM, heck,
    > even Ultra2 Wide SCSI drives are cheaper than an equivalent amount of RAM.

If you mean that 9.1 gigs of UW2 SCSI is cheaper than 9.1 gigs of RAM, I
agree... otherwise I think you have your prices screwed up, or have some
connection that can sell below cost.

In other news, Andy DeLuca, the bassist who did all of the European
Symphony X shows has asked me to see if I can find bootleg videos of the any
and all of the shows. He's never seen them, and I know they exist. Mail
me, and I'll hook you up with the info. He's not going to pay for em, but
he can and most certainly will trade.

got a response from any of them. ><

Surprise surprise, screwed again. Your not alone though, I e-mailed ryan
whittaker at scarred records twice and got no reply. no one in the bootleg
"industry" can be trusted unless they're trading.

    >< I would love to hear those songs on their new tour - but...I think - as
someone mentioned - that playing those songs would be a step down the ladder
    of development... ><

It'd be better than hearing PMU for the 1000th time. anyway they said
themselves they're sick of playing the same songs, thats why they did the
setlist they did on the christmas tour. so i dont see why we cant get a good
mix of the new songs, and the old songs *including* something from wdadu
    (besides ytse jam).

Cincinnati at this place called Annies. It's a real
nice club, saw Dream Theater there on the FII tour. As
luck would have it, Kings X just happen to be playing
there the 24th of July. WOOHOO!!! It just doen't get
    any better.

It says on tickemasters website that a band called
ACUMEN will be playing with the Beard. Does anybody
    know who this is?

I've had the Echo Hollow CD since i first came out. I must say that it
is pretty kickass. It is sort of reminiscent of old, classic Tourniquet,
but it's not quite the same (I don't mean this in a good or bad way, just
different). It's kinda like what Tourniquet could've sounded like if
they'd have taken a slightly different direction than they actually had.
The cover of Sunday Bloody Sunday is actually pretty damn good, too. In
fact, a girl I know who is a pretty big U2 fan likes their version better
than the original. It pretty much sticks to the original form, but it is
certainly them doing it. Very cool metal stuff. I recommend it.

Thanks to the jammer that recommended this show at Downtime, in NYC. I
was there for about 5 hours, I heard three bands, want some reviews?
    Well, hot diggity!

The First Band: Didn't get their name. All I can say is, what if hootie
tried to play metallica? This is what you'd get. Not bad...but exactly
that. I waited for Alchemy X to go on; so was everyone else apparently.

Alchemy: Well, it's more metal than progressive, and they have some
chops. The closest comparison would be to Fates Warning. The drummer
ain't so great, but the two guitarists and the bassist/keyboardist were
talented. The vox were great. The vocalist, who dressed like Trent
Reznor but looked and acted and sounded like Bruce Dickonson, has this
really kick-ass banshee wail. I wasn't that impressed with the music
until I learned that they've only been around for two years and this is
their first album. They have potential, but you know how first albums
are. They need to find themselves.

Both guitarists did lead and rhythm, and as far as I could tell, both
were very good at both. one guitarist played an Ibanez Universe, the
other had two ibanez models I know nothing about, because I don't know a
damned thing about guitars. I don't even know what kind of drums they
had, but it wasn't a spectacular kit. The hole(you know that hole in the
bass drum) was just sort of torn out! Really everything about the
drumming in this band is shoddy.

And to think I almost left then! Glad I stayed for Aztec Jade, because
they ROCK. I knew something good was gonna happen when I saw them
setting up the framework for the drum kit, because it took up half the
stage. This guy had toms, cowbell, all those funky different hi-hats and
whatnot, and thankgod, a double bass. And he could play. Total opposite
    of the other guy.
Buuuuut, this time it's the guitar that suffered! This guitarist was
pretty good, but...and there's no nice way to say it, he just couldn't
shred very well. For me, shredding is far down on the list of what makes
a song good, so it only bothered me while it was being attempted. In
other respects, he was a more than adequate musician, but not at the
level of the drummer, or the vocalist, who was phenominal. The
keyboardist was also very good. I had to leave early(2:30am!) but I got
a great deal on some Jade merchandise. These guys should be on Metal
    Blade.

I'll post their web site tomorrow. Now I sleep!

Speaking of Watchtower, anybody know about the demo they recorded after Control and Resistance? There has been serious rumors that the forthcoming 3rd album was even more sick and complex than CAR, and that it was meant to be released a couple of years ago. There's also a rumor that Colaluta will be in the current line-up of Spastik Ink.

I first picked up Watchtower's "Control & Resistence" MANY year ago. It was released in the late 80's. It was lacking in production in the way DT's WDADU did - not terrible, but noticible. The singer, unfortunately TOTALLY gets in the way. Great incredibly technical and sick music, but his screeching is borderline-intolerable. After listening to it enough, though, I've gotten used to it and enjoy giving it a spin every once and awhile. I own it mostly as a novelty though. Also, it's funny to hear a band singing about 80's "current events": Chernobyl and the Tylenol cyanide scare.

Spastic Ink's "Ink Complete" is much different. Still with a less-than-slick production, Ron and his new bandmates decided their music is incapable of supporting a singer (thank God)! So they just go OFF! Every song is a wonderful technical experiment. My favorite track is a combination of funk and classical elements. ...and it works! Liquid Tension Experiment is my closest comparison to this album, but they have a totally different chemistry and the result is very different but equally as entertaining! Can't wait for the next one from both of these groups!

Sieges Even - I REALLY gave these guys a chance and REALLY wanted to like them. I bought their most recent two albums: "Sophisticated" and "Uneven". Unfortunately, I just can't seem to get over their singer. His thick German accent when singing in English just gets in the way too much. And from what I hear, he's an improvement over their earlier vocalist(s). Their first vocalist was once described as "The most horrible singer ever to appear on an album." I decided not to bother, though some people seem to like some of their earlier stuff. If you can't get enough of the overly technical stuff and REQUIRE a singer to be in the band, give these guys a try.

    Hope that helps!

Hello! I am the proud owner of 2 Spock's Beard albums: Beware of Darkness and The Kindness of Strangers. I really like them. Alright, here are the questions: 1) How does The Light compare to these albums, in terms of sound, style, quality, etc.? I think they didn't have the Asian guy with them for this one, so i don't know how different the sound could be. 2) Any reviews of their new one, Day for Night? Same sound as the last two albums? I noticed many of the songs were very short, so I don't know if they changed their sound a bit (although from some of the samples I heard they sound pretty much the same style as the previous 2). Thanks for any answers to these questions.

    Hi, folks:

Just sending out this reminder that The Artist Shop and Talk City are co-hosting an IRC Chat with drummer Rod Morgenstein and keyboardist Derek Sherinian of the band Platypus on Sunday, March 28 at 3pm eastern/12 noon pacific. Platypus has just released their debut album on Velvel records called When Pus Comes to Shove. Rod has an extensive background as one of the founding members of the extremely influential Dixie Dregs. He was also a part of Winger and more recently the Rudess Morgenstein Project. Derek's background is with Dream Theater and, prior to that, about 10 years with Alice Cooper. The other members of Platypus include John Myung, bassist and stick player for Dream Theater, and guitarist/vocalist Ty Tabor of King's X. Rod and Derek will be taking questions on their new band and what's in store for the future of Platypus. Full details on joining this chat (plus a graphic and soundbite for the Platypus album!) are at <http://www.artist-shop.com/irc>. Do not wait till the last minute to check it out as you might get left out.

Yes, the song sucks big time and ok I'll give it to you that most of the band are musical idiots, but the person singing is Layne Stanley (Alice in Chains). Although he might not have the great voice like our own Mr. LaBrie, he still is a great singer. Alice in Chains are probably the best band to come out of Seattle, other than Queensryche.

I would like to set up my guitar to use the same wiring configuration Petrucci uses in his JPMs...Where he has a 3 position selctor and 2 splitable humbuckers ...the humbuckers are normal in each end position, but when he selects the middle position, he gets the inner coil on each pickup, for 2 single coils acting in a hum cancelling situation.

If anyone knows the correct wiring scheme for this, could you send it to me??

Oh My God!!! This discussion is too close to a top 10 list, I can't believe you all are breaking the rules like this!!! hehe

my own personal supergroup (strictly talking about rock musicians here):

Vocals-Geoff Tate Nobody sings like this guy IMO, great range, phrasing, good pure voice...

Lead Guitar-Joe Perry I know I'll probably get attacked like crazy for this one, but he's got a good feel, good sound, and is more lyrical than shredders like Vai. I'd choose Petrucci, but I've been on an Aerosmith kick lately, hence, Joe Perry...:)

Rhythm Guitar-James Hetfield Who else??? This guy has the best timing I've heard on a rock guitar player..I'd love to see some other stuff outside of the metallica thing...

Bass-Tony Levin Most versatile guy I've seen in a while...can play with almost anybody, and plays every type of bass imaginable...and does them all well too...:)

Keyboards-Keith Emerson or Derek Sherinian I hear the flames starting...If I choose Petrucci on guitar, I'd take Emerson, if I take Perry, I take Sherinian. Sherinian's a good groove keyboardist, and Emerson's outrageous technique would fit in great with Petrucci's animal playing...:)

Drums-Mike Portnoy...who else??? hehe...He proved to me he could really kick in a good groove on FII, I always knew he had phenomenal technique beforehand, but he set himself on another level on FII IMO....
