    Hey Al!

The Lucifer's Friend I've got is "...Where The Groupies Killed The
Blues" Actually, before have this CD, I actually saw the vinyl; in the
flea market somewhere here...And the CD; I actually borrowed it from
some friend. Hmmm, do you think that this guy would exchange with
something more "mellow"? What do you think; if I offer this guy the best
from UFO for the Lucifer's one?

You've got that right; this is a wild shit! I like the "Hobo"; John
Lawton is ripping off his throat=D6

The first time I heard LF was from my uncle (!) maybe its called "The
Banquet" or something; with pictures of these really weird guys in 70's
outfit, sitting around the old and eerie table; with candlelight+spooky
ambience all over. Actually; he has all of their album=D6and still do not
consider himself too old for that havenly stuff...so I could not claim
all of his collection as my own...*snif*

For a little confirmation and infos about these old CD; It come from the
Repertoire labels. Maybe you'd like to check them out; I have the addres
for their catalogue (with covers by Roger Dean; he do A LOT of Yes
artworks ). They are the one who responsible for the rerelease of so
many ancient mammoth like LF and Renaissance; its based in Germany.
(Its kind of sad to think that groups of mammoth like LF didn't get the
    proper recognition at their times=D6)
These are they faxes; they didn't put the Homepages; so maybe you should
    ask them;

Sorry to say that the info I have is soooo limited; o yeah; they have
    some adress too
( maybe it related to this topics=D6 I don't know; but it is worth to try=

I wanted to bring this to the jams attention....I discovered this so-called "knowledge" at Taxi.com its exactly this kind of fuckin bullshit that keeps music as commercial as it can get

Yes, I have heard of "to each his own" but im sick and tired of great musicians and bands getting shorted because they dont appeal to some target audience or corporate zipperheads MTV quota.

They may still struggle and make it like a certain band we know but how many have we lost??

I'm so pissed that im gonna go out and punch someone now...see ya later

    FROM WWW.TAXI.COM

"Don't bore us, get to the chorus.

Keep the intros short. Long intros are self-indulgent and may turn the listener off before they even get a chance to hear the rest of the song. Keep your verses short. People want to hear the hook, and they need to hear it right away or they'll go to another station.

    Don't let your melodies meander.

Meandering melodies bore listeners. Simple but interesting melodies that resolve well work much better. Make sure that your choruses are melodically and rhythmically different from your verses. It's also good to use bridges in most songs, and make sure that they make the song interesting and uplift the listener. By that, I mean that the bridge should set the listener up for a final chorus and vamp. Make the listener feel that the big finish is on its way.

    Embellish the chorus.

Use a change in the rhythmic structure and introduce new instrumentation to make your chorus become as important as it needs to be. Big choruses make big hits. People want to sing along and tap their feet. Give them what they want."

CAN U BELIEVE THIS SHIT???? NO ONE BUT NO ONE should try and direct a persons musical vision

Not producers/not corporate types and definietly not these blowhards!!!!!!!

Sorry for the space filler but this is one that needed to be seen to be believed

Hey, all... I've got a question and I'm hoping someone will lead me in the right direction here... I just bought a 3DFX VooDoo3 card Friday and it says on the box that if offers DVD Hardware Assist. I made the mistake of substituting "assist" with "support." So now I'm wanting to find a software DVD decoder/player ASAP. Does anyone know where I might find one? :) Preferably free (but hopefully not illegal)? :))

And now a comment or two on this: >NO ONE BUT NO ONE should try and direct a persons musical vision

No one is. It's helpful advice. As much as you may dislike mainstream music, MTV, radio, media, et al, what they play is what the people generally want to hear. When you think of it, probably something like 75% of the people who listen to music (any kind) daily have never picked up a musical instrument in their lives, and 20% quit taking piano lessons when they were 12 or were band students that pawned their french horns at college. 4% more are the stuff of garage band kids and the people who actually write and play the stuff that winds up on the radio, and less than 1% are the actual hardcore, devoted, talented musicians like you'd find on this list.

Generally, the stuff we listen to, we listen to for musical content. Being that we like to listen to the flashy showmanship, colorful arrangements, intricate rythmns, etc. We're awed by such like that. That's because most of us here are musicians or have a great respect for talent and ability at least. But when you look at the average person, they don't appreciate any of that. All they DO want is catchy songs by people wearing flashy clothes. I used to not think this way even 6 months ago, but I've observed and it's basically true. Being non-musicians, the stuff we listen for in music means nothing to them. What was explained on that Taxi.com message was what has been status quo for the last 50 years in the music industry. Listen back to music over the last 50 years and compare how many hit songs fit that criteria. Not many have strayed from the pattern and made it and the ones that fit outweigh the oddball songs probably well over 100 to 1.

I'm not saying that Dream Theater will never make it big, but I honestly believe that, even with, say, multi-million dollar promotions from Eastwest (like it would happen), they still wouldn't sell because people have literally been programmed to not like it. Example: My little brother has started getting interested in listening to music. Of course my first reaction was to try to get him into stuff I listen to. I'm too late, he's already been influenced by watching MTV and listening to his friends too much. Know what he told me? (same thing I told my friend years ago) Metal bands that use keyboards are pussy metal. Then he jumped when he'd realized he said that to his keyboard playing metalhead brother. heh. But this is what MTV is doing to people. It closes their minds, and once it's reached out there is not much you can do but give them an instrument to play and hope they learn to respect it. So support your local musical arts centers, school bands, etc., and the people involved, that's the best way, I think, to make an impact on the future of music. There will never be a Wyld Stallions to create world peace through music, but I think a world of musicians would do a pretty good job on their own. :)

On the bright side, though, he really dug Galactic Cowboys stuff, and >almost< liked Devin Townsend's Infinity, so I don't think I've completely lost him yet. :) -- KorgX3 snaps out of his reverie and gets back to work. NP: Frank Zappa - Strictly Commercial (I can't turn this guy off!)

"good" cds are hard to find anywhere....that's why they invented mail order

about the "great song composed in dreams and forgotten upon awakening" idea.....that's not only limited to music, nor only to dreams.....i write occasionally for my school's paper, and do some CD reviews on-line, and way too often, I get this idea ripping through my head, a great composition, that perfect description for a song, or that logical rant that doesn't come along too often......and invariably I have no pen nor computer within easy reach....and by the time I get to one, the thoughts have diappeared, and I'm left with bupkus......

regardless of specific circumstances, I'd bet most of us can probably relate to the idea.....

    THRESHOLD - Wounded Land UK Rating: * * * * =BD 1993 GIANT ELECTRIC PEA GEPCD 1005 Running time: 57:46

THRESHOLD line-up: Damian Wilson (vocals) - Jon Jeary (bass, acoustic guitar, backing vocals) - Tony Grinham (drums) - Nick Midson (guitar) - Karl Groom (guitar, bass pedals) - Richard West (keyboards, orchestration)

Songs: Consume to Live (8.11) Days of Dearth (5.26) Sanity's End (10.21) Paradox (7.15) Surface to Air (10.14) Mother Earth (5.52) Siege of Baghdad (7.44) Keep it with Mine (2.27)

A classic debuts album this one! The first excellent studio release from Threshold received great reviews and introduced Threshold as one of the most exciting new bands in Progressive Metal. Although they sometimes reminds a little bit of Dream Theater, Threshold are not even close to being a Dream Theater clone as so many other progressive metal bands today.

Threshold has gone through many different band line-ups, and this album is the only with Tony Grinham on the drums. The vocals are handled by Damian Wilson who after this release departure from Threshold. He joined them later for the release of "Extinct Instinct" in 1997 and then went his own way again for other musical obligations. His vocals though are very good and his contribution to this album is very important. Sometimes his voice reminds of Robert Plant. The musicians are very skilful especially the guitar player Karl Groom.

The music is sometimes close to heavy metal and sometimes not, but always very melodic. There are a lot of tempo changes and lengthy instrumental sections. The album has got some great arrangements, and the highlights are "Days Of Dearth", "Sanity's End" and the 10:14 minute epic track "Surface to Air". This track is very beautiful and it contains many different mood changes. "Mother Earth" is perhaps the heaviest track on this album.

This is not an ordinary progressive album; it's simply one of the best debut albums from 1993, and a good investment to your CD collection. Highly recommended!

Greetings! Spock's Beard are about to tour north-eastern and north-central US (Baltimore, Philly, Pittsburg, Rochester, Chicago, Milwaukee, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Minneapolis, plus a show in Hollywood where they're starting the tour). This is the first time that SB are going to play any US dates other than in CA. For the band to continue to do tours like this, this tour has to be fairly successful. SB have had great success in Europe, but I think the shows are promoted a lot better over there. So anyway, I'm doing what I can to promote the shows over here.

There are a lot of DT fans on this list, most of whom (if not all) generally have a very high respect for great music. Spock's Beard is great music. Now it's been said before: SB are not a prog metal band, so if metal is a necessary ingredient for you to be interested in a band, then SB probably aren't for you. But make no mistake: SB are still really intense, even though they don't play metal. Blistering guitar and keyboard solos, very complex, changing time signatures, and just overall brilliant song-writing. This combined with top notch musicians makes for incredible music. Spock's Beard are to 90's prog rock bands what Dream Theater are to 90's prog metal bands: the very top of the heap.

If you own a SB album or two, then I don't need to convince you to go see them live. However, if you haven't picked up an album yet, go see the show. You won't be dissappointed. I've heard nothing but great things about their live shows, and I'm including a review (previously posted to the 'jam) to emphasize my point.

    Hi all

A review of the Spock's Beard gig in Offenbach, Germany, last night.

Enchant were the support band. Then came Spock's Beard. It was the second time I'd seen them, so I knew roughly what to expect, but it's almost impossible for me to tell you just how frigging excellent these guys were. I've rarely seen so many people smiling at a concert before, both on the stage and in front of it. From the first second both the band and the audience were fully into the gig. The most obvious thing about the band is Neal Morse. He writes excellent songs, is a brilliant live performer and has fantastic stage presence without being pushy - he just belongs center-stage front. I often had the impression he looked like he would start telling jokes.

Musically, the lads were as tight as a duck's arsehole (which is widely known to be water-tight), all songs being delivered perfectly, and possibly just a touch rockier and heavier than on the albums. Ryo Okumoto's antics would pose a serious threat for Derek, and Dave Meros sounded so much like Chris Squire that it was frightening (that Rickenbacker bass sound is just so good). Nick D'Virgilio's drumming skills are being wasted when he plays for Genesis - he has a fine touch that a lot of drummers simply don't have, and Alan Morse [guitars] rounded everything off perfectly. But it was so obvious that the guys were having a real ball up there, and this enthusiasm jumped across to the audience, who passed it back to the band, who passed it back... This was one of the most memorable live performances that I've seen by any band ever. Period. Neal's piano went out for a couple of minutes and he entertained us while it was being repaired by playing Horizons and bits of Supper's Ready. Other highlights included Thoughts, including all the weird vocal sections and the first encore of Squonk with Nick singing and Neal on drums.

On a scale of 1 to 10 this gig went off scale - a truly wonderful and memorable evening. If this band ever play somewhere near you, you owe it to yourself to do everything in you power to get to see them.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

We need to sell out these shows. Go see Spock's Beard, and bring any fellow prog friends that you may have. Also, their albums are readily available (at least in the bigger record stores like Tower) on 'Metal Blade' (despite the fact that they're not really a metal band), so go pick one up if you want to hear them before you see them live. If you belong to the mailing lists of any other great prog bands, repost this there and let as many people know about this as you can.

    Confirmed dates: May 11 - Hollywood, CA / The Whiskey A Go Go / w/ Mike Keneally May 16 - Baltimore, MD / Orion Studios / w/ The Dark Aether Project May 17 - Philadelphia, PA / Upstairs At Nicks / w/ The Hand Farm May 18 - Rochester, NY / The Penny Arcade / w/ Schrodinger's Cat May 19 - Pittsburgh, PA / Graffiti Showcase / w/ TBA May 20 - Detroit, MI / The Magic Bag / w/ Tiles May 22 - Chicago, IL / Martyr's / w/ The Hand Farm May 23 - Minneapolis, MN / First Avenue and 7th St Entry / w/ TBA May 24 - Milwaukee, WI / Shank Hall / w/ Kopecky May 25 - Cincinnati, OH / Annie's / w/ Acumen May 26 - Cleveland, OH / Peabody's / w/ TBA

I'm going to the Baltimore and Philadelphia shows. See you there!
