the album was "Combustication." I haven't heard it, but I've heard good
things about it. I have, however, heard them backing up John Scofield on
his album "A Go Go." it's a pretty cool, chill disc. They actually just
released "Cumbustication Remixed" or something like that, which might be
    worth checking out.

    Hey,

            Sorry Ytsejamers no DT.

Just FYI about the new STEVE VAI DVD. It rocks!! (although I wish he
would of put some stuff from
            Fire Garden).

On the DVD you can switch from 2 camera angles (whenever you want). Kinda
    like being your own
video director. Plus he has a commentary about the songs/music. Talks
    about recording and playing
            techniques. I give this a A++.

Also sometime check out the Steve VAI chat room at: www.trsgroup.com
(look in chat area,..goes right to his site)

    see you all there.

I hear they are on tour in North America. This band is a MUST SEE to
    believe. Excellent musicians.

I'm not sure where the tour dates are listed... just do a search on Yahoo

    their web page.

That was me. Even though I am so far from being a musician that the
light from planet Musician takes 50 years to reach me(and mostly ends up
on the neighboring planet, Ptacek). I did play the clarinet for 9
years, and I learned the interval trick in a music theory class.

A third: pretty easy to hear. try listening to an iron maiden song for
    examples a'plenty.

A fourth: first two notes of the wedding song, or the beginning of "I've
    been working on the railroad".

fifth: herald trumpets. "His majesty has entered the room!
    *Buh-Baaahhhhh!*"

sixth: my favorite...the second note in the NBC gong. The third note is
a four. Someone pointed out, in the coolest piece of trivia ever, that
the 1-6-4 is G-E-C, as in General Electric Corporation, which owns NBC.

Seventh: tough to point out. But it's the opening to "Somewhere over the
rainbow". the second note - the "wheeerrrrrrre".

octove: can actually be tough. I confuse it with the fifth a lot.

Once you get the hang of these, you're learning relative pitch, and then
you'll find your playing get easier, and your comprehension grow.

    huh huh...grow.

Well, first of all, that's wrong. A major seventh (i.e. a C to the B
above it) would NOT be on the "where" but rather on the "o" part of
    "over".

    > octave: can actually be tough. I confuse it with the fifth a lot.

I find this one to be the EASIEST, actually. Just listen for the two
notes that sound like they're the same, just one's higher than the other.
Actually, a great example of an octave would be the "where" in "Somewhere
    Over the Rainbow."

You also forgot all of the other intervals, the ones in-between what you
    mentioned.

Minor second: The Jaws theme. Duh-dun. Duh-dun.

Minor third: This would be (ascending)... Uhh... "So Long, Farewell" from
The Sound of Music. "So long" would be a minor third. Descending, it
would be "Colonel Bogey" march. This was made famous by the movie "The
Bridge Over the River Kwai" - it's the one where they whistle it.

Tritone (Augmented fourth, Diminished fifth): "Maria" from West Side
Story. The "Ma" and the "ri" are the tritone. Or, you could just listen
to ANY track on West Side Story and here a tritone.

Minor sixth: Hmm. The only one I can think of off the top of my head
happens to be a descending interval, but you can easily reverse it. Think
the theme to Love Story, you know: "How do I begin to tell a story..."

Minor seventh: More West Side Story. "There's a place for us..." from the
song "Somewhere". The "There's" and "a" are the minor seventh.

Glad to be of service to you.

I agree whole-heartedly with this. My roommate and I were having a
discussion tonight about Nirvana (after seeing Cobain on a new mag cover),
and how they had such a big influence on 90's music.
I was surprised to see them mentioned here in such a positive way, tho...

    1. Dream Theater - Images and Words
    2. Dream Theater - Awake

    4. Oingo Boingo - Farewell (not that I wanted to see them go)
    5. Insane Clown Posse - Riddlebox

    7. David Bowie - Outside
    8. Insane Clown Posse - Great Milenko
    9. Rage Against the Machine - (Self Titled)
    10. Danny Elfman - The Nightmare Before Christmas (Sdtk.)

Runners up: All other DT, Elfman - Music for a Darkened Theater vols.
    1+2, Tool - Aenima, Nirvana - Nevermind

Oh, aye? Who am you to tell we what us could and can't post here? People
want see my top ten lists and I'm gone to post it my best 100 lists just to
    piss on you! HAHAHAH!

Acually, I thought I'd post that before some dumbass newbie that didn't read
    the Ytsejam FAQ did. :)

NEW PEOPLE (and some of us old dumbasses, too), TAKE NOTE!
Posting top ten lists are just a waste of bandwidth. If you're really
interested in seeing what people's top ten favorite blah blah are,
accumulate them through private mail, or, even better, set up a free
messageboard on one of those freebie sites like sitepowerup.com (I think
it's free anyway) or messagezone.com. It's a much better way of handling
these sorts of things and keeps the jam clutter-free and everyone who wants
to can post and view the results.

I thank you for your support.

That's has happened to me a few times, once resulting in a bastardization of my dream tune that I called "In Bright Light," but the weirdest musical dream I ever had was something different. I was browsing through the sheet music section at a music store, and I saw a guitar tab book for an album by the Bro Mags called "Best Wishes." This album never made it to CD, as far as I know, so of course there was no Cherry Lane-styled tab book made to accompany it.

Anyway, I really liked the tape at the time, so I looked at the tab for the first song. I looked and looked, trying to memorize it as best I could, as I hadn't been playing guitar very long at the time. In the middle of studying the book, I woke up. I frantically grabbed my guitar and started playing what I could remember from my dream. Sure enough, it was correct, and even in the proper key!

It shocked the hell out of me, to be sure.

Here are a couple of recommendations of CDs that I have come across recently. NDTC, but until MP whets our collective whistle with some info on the new CD, this is better than bitching ..........

    1) Regency. This is a not-well-known band out of the heart of the Champagne region of France. They play in the best of prog-metal style for my tastes !! They have two self-titled mini-CDs available but each has over 30 minutes of music (the first CD has 4 songs, the second one 3). It may not be easy to grab in the US, but for any Euro-jammers (esp the French ones), this is ABSOLUTE MUST BUY. I think that each one is 70 francs. Rating for the first one is 15/18 and the second (newer) one is 16/18. Really worth the extra effort to get !!If DT put this material out, you would not be disappointed.

By s-mail, you can reach them at:

Regency c/o Charles Monzat 122 Rue Laperouse 5110 Reims France

    By fax:

    +33-3-26-03-61-59

By e-mail, you can try the following (no guarantees):

    KEspich@aol.com

    2) Fish - Raingods with Zippos. I am in the "Fish" camp and not in the "Hogarth" camp (hello Rick !!!!!). But, after "Vigil", I though that Fish's solo stuff blew until "Sunsets on Empire" where he really returned to form. Well, for me, this one continues on the positive path. It starts a little slowly for me but ends quite well. If you like Fish, you should get this now. Rating 6/7.

And, Fish is great in concert. Supposedly, a North American tour this summer is planned. Even if you aren't familiar with him at all, this is a show worth seeing. (Paradise, 7/14/99 for those in Boston !!).
