I always thought this was an octave!?

Minor second: as time goes by. or down: the rite of spring..

I seem to remember doing this as a kid. I remember that we found songs for
all the twelve intervals in an octave, but for the life of me I can't
recall the songs now. And by now I'm old, my brain desiccated, my mind
ossified. What song starts with a tritone!? :)

DiBella said during his Mike Bahr scalp-alike training:

    > If you have a problem with me, E-Mail me. Don't waste Jam bandwidth. >Gee, now that you say that I guess I'll get moving! Don't want some >pathetic jackass mad at me!! I've got more pressing problems than going >bankrupt covering Bahr's ass, you'll get it when you get it. Just be >glad you ARE getting it....

I hate to respond to drivel like this, but we've all seen this type of thing so many times. Bahr got in way over his head, Scarred had a note on its site saying basically don't email him about late orders (ie, you'll get 'em when you get 'em) and now it's DiBella is following in this never-ending cycle. Hell, at least Bahr was apologetic when he screwed people.

If you can't handle your backlog, give the discs to someone else. None of us particularly gives a damn what "better" you have to do - you took responsibility and you're apparently in over your head. It's even more apparent since you're yelling at some guy and calling him names. I believe this guy said that he had emailed you and you hadn't replied. Any of this sound familiar to anyone?

So what's the moral of this story? DON'T BUY FROM BOOTSCALPERS!!! Is it sinking in yet? After all the Bahr wars and the discussion here it still boggles my mind that people would be naive enough to actually buy a boot. In more mature taping circles (that's more mature as in more established, not maturity of the members) anyone who tries to sell a boot first gets laughed at and then suddenly has no one to trade with, much less customers to buy something that should have always been free. This is the way, this is the light. Heh.

Man, I feel refreshed. A Bahr War without Bahr. Nothing gets me posting faster (as anyone who knows me could tell you) then some hack doing things like this. The repetition of this topic at various times on this list should have tipped people off to the solution, but ........

    Take care all...

joe, you were listening to Medeski, martin and wood

because of the type of people who were always recommending this band to me, I went around for the longest time thinking these guys were a hippie jam band, along the lines of the grateful dead or Phish.....then i got a listen, and was proven wrong, and found out that they are a rather listenable act.....

Don't have any of their discs, proper, but I do have John Scofield's A Go-go disc, on which those guys acted as Scofield band.....really cool stuff, that, and MMW may well be among my purchase plans in the future.....

It's actually extremely common for people to mix 5ths with octaves.

    > Minor second: The Jaws theme. Duh-dun. Duh-dun.

Did you forget the major second?

    > Tritone (Augmented fourth, Diminished fifth): "Maria" from West Side > Story. The "Ma" and the "ri" are the tritone. Or, you could just listen > to ANY track on West Side Story and here a tritone.

You FOOL! What about YYZ! :) Seriously... the opening to YYZ is all augmented 4ths (tritone)

DT Examples (all off FII cuz that's the closest DT disk to me) I'll just call the first note of each relationship the root note, even though that's not theoretically accurate. As we're not analyzing the DT tunes and just using them for intervalic relationships, it will better suit our purposes. I tried to do em all from ascending melodies, since descending can cause confusion (you invert the intervals sometimes and don't realize which is which). There are better examples available, of course, but these are how I ran into em.

Minor 2nd: Trial of Tears; "Rain-" (root) "in'" (minor 2) on the streets of New Brunswick New Jersey Major 2nd: Hollow Years; Carry me to the "Shore" (root) "Line" (Major 2) Minor 3rd: Lines in the Sand; Swept away with "The" (root) "Tide" (Minor 3) Major 3rd: Trial of Tears; I may have wasted all "Those" (root) "Years" (Major 3) Perfect 4th: Take Away My Pain (chorus); "Take" root "Away" (4th) my pain Augmented 4th: Non DT... Rush's YYZ.... if you can remember how that sounds you've got it totally. Perfect 5th: Hollow Years; "Once" (root) "The Stone" (5th) Minor 6th: Hollow Years; She'll (root) Give (minor 6th) ...you all the signs Major 6th: Take Away My Pain; "He Said" (root) "Look At" (Major 6th) Poor Gene Kelly Minor 7th: Take Away My Pain; "I'm" (root) not "Fright-" (minor 7) -ened anymore Major 7th: Anna Lee; "She Keeps" (root) "Hold-" (Major 7th) -ing on

    The end!

Actually, Ive proven that, as Ive gotten 3 kids I sit with in study hall (two seniors and one junior) into LTE, Stratovarius, and Symphony X, respectively...so much that one baught Strato's Visions of Europe, and my other friend baught Symphony X's Divine Wings album. Now they're both huge fans. Funny thing though, the SX kid heard Lie and asked if he could borrow Awake. He said "it was good, but SX blows them away." Whatever honks your horn I guess...

There is definately a potential audience, but because of MTV and the media, it might never be.

The Ozric Tentacles US tour has been postponed... apparently they're having trouble obtaining visas. The OT webmaster tells me they're now trying to shoot for July.

I have to agree. A lot of people like music with such emphasis the musicians output and not just the musicians themsevles. My theory is that b/c MTV is such a visual media, an artist has to be able to compete in the personal appearance arena moreso than the musical arena. Consequently if a band want to be played on MTV, they have to look pretty. There's an exception for every rule (Blues Traveler, Bare Naked Ladies), but for the most part that seems to be the rule. I think that bands like Dream Theater would be more popular if they were featured on MTV, but I want to see DT's music be consumed, not the actual members of the band. I see a lot of people on this list say "We need to get DT (or some other similar band) on MTV", but if that happened, those same people would just go find some other band that isn't popular. Just my opinion. > Matt === = *Trent

    > Could someone please email me these as applied to DT songs? > I cant quite figure some of these "soundtrack" tunes.... > Thanks

That is a VERY cool idea. We should come up with a little DT track - CD time for all the intervals (both ascending and descending) That is such a cool idea that I'm willing to collect all the entries and then post some of the best ideas on a webpage.

Some things to keep in mind - it should be taken from a STRONG theme. Don't come up with examples that are the 52nd note in the middle of a 64th note run 32.8% through a solo.

    You should use one of the following schemes: R - m2 - M2 - m3 - M3 - P4 - d5 - P5 - m6 - M6 - m7 - M7 - O R - b2 - 2 - b3 - 3 - 4 - b5 - 5 - b6 - 6 - b7 - 7 - 8

I personally prefer the first method but the second also serves the purpose of chord relation.

Also specify if it is a melodic or harmonic interval. And don't forget to name the instrument. It might actually be cool to get some vocal lines as examples, even though I'm sure most will be GUITAR.

Just to get the ball rolling - here are some I have off the top of my head:

    Ascending melodic minor 3rd: Pull Me Under - (4:12) - First 2 notes on guitar (E, G)

    Ascending melodic Perfect 4th: Under a Glass Moon (0:00) - First 2 notes on guitar (C#, F#)

THRESHOLD - Extinct Instinct UK Rating: * * * 1997 GIANT ELECTRIC PEA GEPCD 1019 Running time: 67.13

THRESHOLD line-up (for this album): Karl Groom (electric & acoustic guitar, backing vocals) - Richard West (keyboards, orchestration and backing vocals) - Jon Jeary (bass and acoustic guitar, backing vocals) - Nick Midson (electric & acoustic guitar) - Damian Wilson (vocals) - Mark Heany (drums)

Songs: Exposed (6.25) Somatography (6.22) Eat the unicorn (10.00) Forever (4.34) Virtual isolation (5.34) The whispering (7.52) Lake of despond (6.22) Clear (3.32) Life flow (5.50) Part of the chaos (8.14) "Hidden Track!" (1.40)

Threshold is back with a new album and once again some new members. Mark Heany is their fourth drummer on this their fourth album. He replaced Jay Micciche who left the band to form his own band "Mindfeed" together with the singer Glynn Morgan. Glynn's replacement is Damian Wilson, who is back from Landmarq to sing with Threshold again. Damian was the singer on Threshold's debut album "Wounded Land". I prefer Damian Wilson before Glynn Morgan so I don't mind the change. Damian Wilson's vocals is sometimes reminiscent to Robert Plant. Unfortunately time would tell that Damian would leave again due to the next release.

This album is as heavy and complex as their previous studio album "Psychedelicatessen" (1994), with double bass drums and loads of heavy guitar playing from the maestro Karl Groom. As usual there's lot of mood and tempo changes, and the same good melodies in their songs as always. Notable in Threshold's music is that they've got a lot of background vocal arrangements and harmonies. It's quite unusual in progressive metal. My favourite track is the 10:00 minutes "Eat The Unicorn", the ballad "Forever", "Virtual Isolation" and "Part Of The Chaos".

Once again I must honour Threshold for not being just another Dream Theater clone. I really love Dream Theater, but I think there is too many progressive metal bands who is copying them, but not Threshold. They've got a unique sound. A correct label on their music might be heavy symphonic progressive metal. I can find reminiscences to Metallica, Queen, Queensryche, Scorpions and Superior.

This is a rather good album with powerful complex heavy progressive metal, but yet very melodic. Threshold are keeping their place in the forefront as one of the premier progressive metal bands.
