    >< who needs eMpTyV, when we have vh-1's Rock show. Finally some good
music on TV. I couldn't believe it when I saw AC/DC finally on TV!!!
Rock-Show rules. Now lets concentrate on getting Dream Theater on Rock Show!
    ><

All they show on "Rock Show" is Metallica. Although they did show Rush
tonight, but it's not as if Rush is some obscure band. Still, VH1 is so much
better than MTV that I'm confident they might show something on that show
    worthwhile.

for example). Even though it is sort of a straight forward jam, I like it.
Knowing how the song should have ended, had it not been "Praternized", I
cant seem to listen to I&W without getting that "blue-balled" feeling.

Anyhow, MP does have a version of LtL without the lame faded ending. And
supposedly, a great drum fill is in there as well. Since they are in the
process of finalizing the new record, I would like to propose that the full
LtL makes it as filler on a CD single or Japanese bonus track or maybe part
of the 1999 Christmas Present to the fanclub. >>

    Actually,
The version we recorded in the studio for I&W did not have the same ending we
tagged on live as we always knew it was going to fade....
Yes, I do have the original studio outtake in my archieve....but it only
consists of us vamping for an additional minute or so (with some drum fills)
    and then some silly ending.

You can actually hear this very ending on the I&W home video during the "in
the studio" portion when the playback is rolling and me & John Petrucci
    high-5 each other and dance.....
(an "end of drum tracks" ritual also documented from the Awake sessions on
    the 5Years video....)

Well, its been 9 months since I sent my money into Magna Carta for Dali's Dilemma (believing the release date back then was only a month away). I will tell you that it has been extremely hard for me to see the release date get pushed back time and time again. And then last Tuesday it was official, but it took yet another week for it to make it to my mailbox. Talk about torture.

I already knew that Matthew Bradley was an amazing vocalist (Craig Goldy, Explorer's Club), that Matthew Guillory would have been my choice of Jordan for the new DT keyboardist, and that Jeremy Colson liked to play his drum kit on CRACK (remember that one?). But the main thing that was the big discovery for me was the Reyes twins (father is Anakin). The bass solo on Miracles In Yesteryeat is very dynamic. And my favorite experience of this new (old) CD is Pat's phrasing. He knows how to make those Images and Words type runs (long jams with constant 16ths/triplets/16th note triplets) but he also has some great melodic sense.

The band in general knows how to blend heavy, progressive, soul, melody, consonance and dissonance with intelligent songcraft. Not a weak link in the band (including the singer - the downfall of almost every band with chops). I can go on and on but comparisons will only detract from what this band really sounds like. I can't speak for you, but my $16 and 9 months of waiting was worth it.

---My apologies for misleading anyone... I have no idea if Portnoy can be heard breathing hard at the end of ACOS, however, I am fairly certain that he does... Can you actually hear it..? With my "50 dollar system" I would get excited if I could distinguish Myung in the background... <snicker> There are some parts on Live at the Marquee that I wish I couldn't hear... Like on The Killing Hand when LaBrie just starts screaming, then he screams some more, and lastly, he does this scream thing... Generally I like it, however, on that particular recording, he goes a little overboard... Rock on James... Anyway...

Anyone know of any good prog bands touring in Korea? Korea you may ask... Yes, much to my eternal dismay I have been stationed in Korea... Soldier in the U.S. Army... So, if anyone has heard anything... I would appreciate it... Furthermore, will LTE2 be released by the same label as LTE? Sometimes I am able to get the post exchange to order obscure CDs that they would never stock.

One last thing... Any Richard D. James (a.k.a. Aphex Twin) fan out there? If so, how would I set up my stereo to make sense of those melodies? More specifically, the Richard D. James Album... How should that sound? Yikes!

Well, actually I probably could. But then again, that's because upwards of half my collection is classical stuff rather than rock/ metal / prog / jazz / blues, which is what I think most people on here are mainly into. Classical stuff tends to be...I hesitate to say this, but "better performed" than some of the above. Or something.

I hope it's not a exercise in sarcasm.

No, I was serious. I mean, I've read it on this list several times. People have said that the eMpTyV generation are just sheep, and if they were exposed to quality music [on whatever sterio setup], they might enjoy it. It's just that they've never been given the opportunity to have their eyes opened. But I was thinking about this. It isn't a fair statement, when we examine it. After all, who says we know better? It's just that prog sounds better to us; so naturally we want to tell people when they're listening to what we deem shit, and turn them to the Dark Side, the nice, nice music you were telling me about, Stevie (name that paraphrase). But my flatmate from last year branded Dream Theater "Wank Theatre", 'cos he deems it shit. So we have to conclude that music is subjective. Now, the whole point of this thing with Al is: music is subjective; but is sound - i.e. the medium in which the music is delivered - also subjective? If we want to be scientific about it, everything Al says is right - I don't do a sound engineering degree for nothing. But as other people have already pointed out, different people hear different things, right? When I was a kid, I had a lot of ear infections, which screwed up my hearing to a slight extent. One of the results is that I like to take out a little of the mid-range frequencies, and put in a little more bass. That's a listening requirement; but in terms of opinion, I'd push up the treble when listening to Paradise Lost or Fear Factory, just to sharpen it a little. Now, in scientific terms, that's not what the EQ was designed for; and I won't dispute the notion that we're ruining the producer's opinion of good sound. But at the end of the day, if it sounds better to the listener, I'd say that it doesn't matter. Okay Al, you like an absolutely flat response, you want to hear it EXACTLY as the producer (take note here: as the PRODUCER, not the BAND) wanted it. But I don't think it's at all fair for you to say "Well, you're just using an EQ to make up for the inadequacies of your system" - so what if we are, we're just trying to get a sound we like. If I had your set-up, I'd be constantly fiddling with an EQ, depending on the song. IT's like saying that if I had JP's rig, I'd leave the EQ absolutely flat, because the manufacturer intended it to be flat; and anyway, it's worth $Xm, right? > >audio". Dream Theater, as far as we're concerned. Same as us > >poor sods who just don't know what quality audio sounds like, 'cos > >we've never worshiped at Al's Altar of a setup. > > You're being a dick... I think.

No, I'm giving you a complement... Actually. > >Al also told us how much to spend on our sterio. Also, to pre-empt > >someone saying "$10,000 is a lot for a sterio". Well, most people > > I never TOLD anyone how much to spend, I only mentioned the price of admission. You're arguing about semantics.

I wrote: > >on this list are musicians, and if they had the cash, they wouldn't > >even blink at spending $10,000 on their guitar rig / drum kit.

And I'll bet that no-one who ajusts the EQ on their guitar rig does so to get a flat response.

Actually, I was kinda curious as to whether or not somebody could distinguish something that I heard on an album in the background. In OiaLT, right at the beginning of Pull Me Under, James shouts something, but it's as if his microphone is off (which IS entirely possible). Does anybody know what he's shouting to the audience?

What a coincidence that Ambrosia and Eric Johnson are mentioned in the same jam...

Here's some useless trivia for y'all:

I used to work with a guy who knew the guys in Ambrosia. I was showing him the Ah Via Musicom disc by Eric Johnson, and when he saw that picture of Eric all made up (make-up, big hair, feminine look), he started searching the credits. Sure enough Eric had the same manager(?) that Ambrosia had. Apparently this guy liked to get his artists all made up until they looked like flaming hootenanies. I guess the guys in Ambrosia were never hot on the idea, but they went along with it (probably the worse decision they ever made). Why Eric went along with it is a mystery...

    my $.02, BH

Hmmm. I wonder if this guy was managing Billy Squire when he flushed his career down the toilet...

Can't say much about Nelson, but I can say that there are some Winger songs, particularly off of "In the Heart of the Young", that were very very good.

With a band that has Reb Beach and Rod Morgenstein, there *has* to be some saving grace on the albums, and there are.....

Unfortunately, Kip got caught in the "cheez-fest" that was that era of music, and the band's rep couldn't get out of it.

Hell, David Lee Roth had some cheezy ass songs when he had Bissonette, Vai, and Sheehan.....I wouldn't laugh at them as being called "real" music, especially compared to the stuff that's out there now... (coughcoughCREEDcoughcoughTHIRDEYEBLINDcoughcoughcough)

How this particular song ended up on the radio is beyond me. They (radio stations) usually play Time Stand Still when they have a hankering to play that album.
