me being the type without a cassette or CD player in my car, I'm forced to
listen to the radio on my commute (i think i went over all this a few months
ago)....flipping through the stations in that endless search for some decent
music, I came across some good metal, early-Metallica like, on a station i'd
never stopped at before....turned out to be Belladonna (ex anthrax singer's
    new eponymous band), cool stuff.....

next song they played was fromthe band Porcupine Tree, some spacey,
ethereal, basically progressive stuff, and it was a good thing that i was
stuck in a traffic jam at the time, because i was pretty much transfixed by
    what i was hearing.....

so, basiically, i need for information about porcupine tree.....any help
    would be much appreciated......

Wouldn't it be "(Mr) John Petrucci on guitar !" as PMU is just after the kick-ass

    Heh Jam,

If its playing in your city, I HIGHLY recommend this production! It is
really fun and good music. The San Francisco cast is awsome. I can't
remember the other cities it's playing in; go to ticketmaster and they'll
    give you a list.

For the slightly older crowd, I've heard that it is a 90's version of Hair
back in the 70's or something, but I never saw it.

    See it! =D

WOW! I already can't wait for the next tour. I saw DT with ELP and DP last
year and it was awsome. It was last August at the PNC Art Center. The place
is an outdoor venue that holds around 8,000 people or something like that.
It was a perfect evening for a show. I've seen DT in smaller clubs, but I
think they make a better presence on the big stage.

It would be cool if they did some warmup shows this winter in the clubs and
next spring or summer we got to see them headline larger venues. May I
suggest, DT with Spock's Beard as the opener, hmmm?

That would be a Dolby Digital setup, Al. Only two speakers and a sub

Just got back from the RPM concert/clinic. That was the first time I"d seen RPM live, and I must say it was incredible. Anyone who has the chance to go to an RPM date, do it up! You'll learn a lot and enjoy some great music at the same time.

One problem with it: the music was turned up SO LOUD that the speakers were distorting badly enough to completely drop out some of Jordan's soloing. It's like they tried to do an open-air P.A. broadcast through transistor radio speakers. It really was quite awful.

But still, tipped hats to the guys, because they put on a hell of a show, and gave some great tips and advice to us others who like to fancy ourselves musicians. Also, thanks for sticking around for a long time after the clinic to talk and answer questions.

Just for the curious: the new DT album is now in the vocals and "a little more keyboards parts" stage.

Anxiously awaiting the arrival of the new album --

    >Well!? (sweating painfully for some strange reason) I'd really, really, >like to hear it.

Heh.. Amazing what people will do to listen to an alternate take of a song, even though Mike basically said that the whole point of the song was to have it fade out in the first place. :P IMO: Fuck rereleasing prereleased songs. Maybe one of these days someone (Bogie) will provide Mr. Portnoy with some space to put MP3's or whatnot from his collection, but for them to rerelease LtL with a 2 minute extension or whatever at the end of it would be lame. I think I'd be happier hearing new material from the band myself. :)

Just what I want to do when I'm in a band: remix and rerelease all of my old music. (That was sarcasm, you bastards!) hehehe. Hell, it seems like rap "musicians" (I still have a VERY hard time accepting rap as a musical artform, although admittedly, there is some pretty good rap shit out there, back to the point of this run-on sentence, really, you might need to start over cuz I think I lost you) do it all the time. :)

It's kind of like ketchup and equalizers. If a chef were to bitch me out when I annointed my steak with the most heavenly spicy ointment of God (Heinz 57 for you heathens), I'd seal him into a highly resonant, 48" uninsulated steel culvert, cap both ends, and pump only the 5kHz and up end of the worst recording of a 7th grade concert band playing their calamitous rendition of Weather Report's "Birdland" on piccolos with triangle accompaniment by the kid who keeps the rythmn by the hands on his Mickey Mouse watch, not the conductor.

Anyway. I've had 3 hours of sleep in the last 48 hours, so I can't reallyask.asgjaga38yq@#Q$

The only instrumental album after his first "Rising Force", is the "Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra in E flat minor Op. 1" (also called "Millennium"). The album consists of Yngwie's compositions performed with (=Yngwie plays the guitar) Czech philharmonic orchestra. All the other albums have a couple of instrumental tracks each, the rest being vocal.

For those who are interested Yngwie is again in the studio making a new record described as "a heavy concept album". Japanese version should be out this year, with rest of the world following in early 2000.

More info and news available at www.pd.net/yngwie (the official fan club page).

well mojo, I'll give it my best...Ive been playing guitar for 14 years and have ran everything from...the early digitech stuff to the gold "Legend"/an ART ECC/the original Zoom and one thing i noticed they had in common....they had no warmth and were too sterile.

High end stuff ...Lexicon (JP) and tons of stuff im sure Al could mention are a major exception, but since i cant afford a 1000 dollar reverb unit I say go for the boxes.

At 1st it was the features of digital units that reeled me in ...but i came to find that any unit that claims to do it all usually does so moderately well. Having said that I am also an Electronics Technician who after my analog and digital courses had determined that analog is the only way to go with any waveform altering effects. Having a dedicated box for each effect seems to leave each effect much more pronounced (possibly the high-end loss)(of the delay/chorusing/phasingflanging effects) even if you use them liberally as i do. I suffer more signal loss but EQs fix that....dont hit me with ketchup please!

And to throw my 2 cents on that one....telling someone they have no taste or whatever because they dont use audiophile techniques when they setup live/record or just listening to music is ridiculous. If it weren't for different tastes we couldnt have the billions of songs through mans history some of which that although might seem similar in places are totally different. I think that is an outstanding concept. Suggested boxes to try....if you can find one...anything by Small Stone...Pro Co. Rat distortion (non-turbo model)...Ibanez Tubescreamer (even the reissued one)..."Blue" BOSS Compressor/Sustainer or the white BOSS EQ. Some say that the stomp box dance sucks but its worth it to me to have the kind of tone i get live.

And finally (i know this long)...on the WD tremsetter...i tried it and im not sure if you know this already but its just a stick that fits inside a tremolo spring...and it didn't work for me, to top it off it made the bar feel VERY unnatural.

Sound engineers fuck up quite often, unfortunately, you can't really correct for that in the playback. If it's not there, it's NOT there. I'll be damned if I'm going to get up and tweak the system every time I change material. Besides that, I think you know my opinion on tone alteration. The thing I HATE is when they use a ton of vocal or instrument processing, your tone controls or EQs can't do shit for that. I live with what's presented.

As far as JM in the I&W mix: I can hear every note just fine. He's set back in the mix and primarily in the left channel, but he's clearly audible.

Bring I&W to a REAL high-end store and listen to it on whatever system they claim is the most detailed. A CD player with a tendency to be slightly analytical can quite often bring things out that are normally difficult to hear. Make sure to listen at a reasonable volume. I think you'd be surprised.

Back when I bought my first REAL CD player, (California Audio Labs - Icon mk II) I could not believe how different my CDs sounded. It was like someone removed a thick curtain that was in front of my midranges, removed the mud from by bass cabs, and sprinkled "tweeter softener" on my previously over-bright JBL-Pro horns. The differences were NOT subtle. I finally had a CD player that could begin to compete with my better analog gear. The Icon replaced a three year old "Top-of-the-line" Technics player. I could NEVER go back...

The easiest way to determine if you've found a real hi-end store is to look for some of these names: Wadia Digital - Theta Digital - Mark Levinson - Bryston - Conrad Johnson - Audio Research - Krell - Immedia - VPI - Rega - Sonic Frontiers - California Audio Labs - Magnapan - Martin Logan - B&W - Dunlavy Audio - Linn - Meridian - NHT - Roksan - Vandersteen Audio - Vacuum Tube Logic (VTL) - Wilson Audio - Classe - Counterpoint - Aragon - Hafler - Revox - Luxman - JM Labs - Well Tempered Labs - Cary Audio - Genesis technologies - Goldmund - Counterpoint - Parasound - Audible illusions - Snell - Velodyne - Thiel - Graham Engineering - YBA - Jeff Rowland Design Group - Oracle - Pass Laboratories - Lexicon - Day-Sequerra - Magnum Dynalab - Sonus Faber - Threshold - McCormack - Jadis - Air Tight - Naim.

    Honorable Mid-fi mentions: Rotel - Adcom - Paradigm - B&K - Clements - Creek - Jamo - Klipsch - McIntosh Laboratory - Mordaunt-Short - Tannoy - Audio Alchemy.
