        Excuse me while I hurl... :) I think I've made my point about
    that. The cones are made of paper, that's all. All high-priced,
    high-hyped crap. Whatever you pay for whatever Bose speaker system you
    see, you can pay the same or less for far better equiptment.
        You've gotta ditch that Sony ASAP. You don't have to go nuts
    $$-wise, a mid-priced Yamaha, Denon, Onkyo, or HK will decimate anything
    Sony could ever dream to do. And don't fall for that Sony "ES" line
    either. Know what ES stands for? "Expensive Shit" Generally speaking
    stay far away from Sony when it comes to home audio. Sony video, (DVD,
    VCR, Tvs, etc.) is actually some great stuff for the price.

    Well, that place was packed like you wouldn't believe, I was standing by the
    entrance door, but hell, no way I was gonna go upstairs to watch on a giant
    screen when God himself was downstairs playing drums. Anyway, Mike was
    amazing and a good teacher as well (but then again, I don't play drums so
    what do I know). He didn't seem too happy with the venue though, but we
    didn't care. And he answered many questions, though there were a few
    stupid ones (Can you play Dave Weckl? Mike says: NO). And as to why Derek
    was fired, he said that after playing with Jordan part time, he and John
    Petrucci didn't see why they weren't doing it full time. Everyone seemed to
    agree with that.

    As for the rest, well I guess everyone should know by now that they're not
    touring this summer, no they won't tour with Maiden though they would love
    to at some point, the album should be coming out in October, AND will not
    include Met II. But it will... Mike didn't answer that question very
    clearly, but what he said was that Met II was written when Derek was in the
    band and so, yes, elements of the song were going to be on the next album,
    but we would have to wait and see. So it should be interesting to see what
    has happened to Met II. Finally, Mike did say that the next album is going
    to be, by far (his own words), the most progressive DT album. And when
    someone asked him what was the most difficult stuff he'd ever played, he
    said the new songs from the upcoming album. So I guess this is good news
    (unless you thought FII was their best).

    By the way, I've just resubscribed to the jam, so if I've posted news that
    are old, sorry. But it's still directly from the man himself.

    yeah, at that precision audio store we went to, i mentioned the problem of
    the practically nonexistant rear speakers (sonic-wise) and the guy was
    telling us that the sony is crap (well he was a bit more polite, he's a
    salesman after all :) and recommended a yamaha. from this discussion i would
    have thought that yamaha would also fall under the "shit" category. not so?

    hehe, i didn't want to get the sony, but my grandfather swears by sony audio
    and convinced my dad to get it. in my room i have an old piece of shit
    technics component system (our old one) that, to me at least, sounds better
    than the sony in the living room.

    another thing this conversation has helped me out in - i had 6 speakers
    hooked up to my receiver in my room, and every time i turned it up past
    barely audible it would shut off and the display would say "protector". i
    always thought it was cuz it was a piece of shit. now i know why :) i
    unplugged all but my 2 main speakers and now i can turn it up fine. hehe.

    One day I had this very same question. So what I did was go to a search engine on the world wide web, like www.altavista.com for example, and I typed in "time signature" and pressed "search". I found lots of neat stuff and I got my question answered. Try it. It's fun.

    Layman's explanation: A time sig is the number of beats per measure. It's a rythmic measurement of music. Listen to a song and count to it. Most songs you can count (1 - 2 - 3 - 4, 1 - 2 - 3 - 4...). That's called a 4/4 time signature. Listen to a common waltz song and you can count (1 - 2 - 3, 1 - 2 - 3...) as most waltzes are written in 3/4 time. The segment of a song that you can count before starting over is called a measure. Now, here's what the numbers 4/4 and 3/4 in a time signature mean...

    Let's start with the last number /4... The 4 will designate how the song is to be counted. The 4 means quarter or 1/4. The 4 means that the measure is to be counted out in quarter beats. Quarter beats basically means a beat that counts as 1/4 of a standard measure. The first number 4 indicates how many beats of the type the last number (1/4) are to be counted in a measure. Therefore a 4/4 time signature is has 4 quarter beats per measure. A 3/4 time sig will have 3 beats per measure.

    Measures are (by supreme law) counted out in powers of 2. So time signatures can be 4/4, 8/8, 16/16, 32/32 etc, but never 6/12, 7/13, 126/921, etc. :) So if you see a 6/8 time signature, you can know that each measure is counted out in eighth notes with 6 beats per measure, a 13/16 is counted out in 16th notes with 13 beats per measure and so on... Don't let the melodies confuse you as very often people will mix and match notes in the middle of a measure. Even with notes that, in a sense, defy the rythmn such as triplets, dotted notes, quintlets, etc, but I won't go into that here. I don't want to confuse you any more than I'm afraid I already have. :)

    Nah, a polka is in 3/4. WHen I think of a waltz I think of the Blue Danube, which is in 12/8. 1-2-3 4-5-6 7-8-9 10-11-12. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about.. most songs, as was explained are counted in quarter notes. Another common time are songs that are done in 8.. this is that triplet feel you hear on songs like "Morning Sun" by Savatage.. it's that little bounce instead of the drive of a 4/4. The only common 8 times are 6/8 and 12/8. Anything past that is just weird... ala Hell's Kitchen which has parts in 10/8... oiy. The common way to tell time in music is by listening to the hi-hat. If that hi-hat is playing 1 or 2 beats it is most likely a song in 2/4 or 4/4.. if triplets are being played on the hi-hat (three quick beats) it is most likely a song in 8.. as songs in 8 are divided into groups of three. Thus 6/8 would be 1-2-3 4-5-6. blah..

    Generally, get speakers first and work up the chain from there. Among components, they have the greatest effect on sound. Also, a decent rule of thumb is to spend at least half your budget on speakers, less than half on electronics, and as little as possible on cables... Any moderately-priced interconnects (Monster, etc) should work, and some 14-gauge or 16-gauge zip cord from your local home-improvement store is fine for speaker cables. (Unless you're really spending a load on your stereo, then you _might_ be able to see the effects of "high-end" cables.)

    Fair warning: if you have low-fi equipment right now, just buying one hi-fi piece will probably not sound good (or, at least, won't sound any better than what you've got now.) I'm going about building a stereo by buying decent mid-fi stuff to start, and updating from there as I go. (I have B&W 602 speakers with Onkyo electronics right now; I'm planning on some B&W N802's next, followed by better electronics later.)

    Dunno. Most of the high-end sites I've looked at don't list prices. Some of the review sites do. There's a couple Usenet groups on the subject, but they aren't very good. (rec.audio.opinion is 99% flame wars, and rec.audio.high-end is over-moderated and too low-volume.) They're OK for starters, though.

    Shifting the discussion from High Quality Hi Fi equipment, I just spend a shitload of time copying all of my MP3's from my CD's to my hard drive. I figured the acronym MP3 might cause AL to jump from his chair where he would dangle from the ceiling by his sticky, unkempt ass. (Ya know I love ya, AL!) :)

    Alas, I am more a sucker for convenience than quality, and if I DID have a quality sound system, it would most likely enhance the cracks and pops of the MP3's anyway, so my Cambridge Soundworks setup works fine for me. :)

    Anyway, I figured I'd just brag about my MP3 collection (consisting of ALL of my CD collection having been ripped to MP3. All 18.6GB of it). It's also a demonstration of my attempt at a World's Record: The man with the world's most free time that should have been better spent. :)

    Maybe someday I'll be able to make this puppy public access (cable modems might be coming here this year!), but until then, this 2 week long no repeat jukebox is mine, all mine! HAHAHAHAHAHA! :)

    Anyway, I just got back from Star Wars (no spoilers) and I'll tell you. Front Row/Center has its advantages, but jeez, the disadvantages are obvious. My ears are ringing, my eyes hurt, my bladder is infected, and I can see clearly in the dark. Not to mention it somehow replaced Carl Palmer with Robert Palmer in the ELP album I don't own.

    My opinion of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace: It doesn't live up to the hype (NOTHING can live up to THAT much hype, but it sure as hell came alot closer than Godzilla, hehehe), but it was a damn great movie overall. In all liklihood it will even be made better by the next two movies as well. SHIT, sorry for spoiling it. I don't think many people knew about the next two movies. Oops. :)
