That's odd; my parents have had the same stereo, 27" Sony front- (maybe
rear-) projection television for almost 10 years now. It's NEVER caused
any problems, and the only thing I really hated about it was that it
didn't have any RCA outs so that I could hook it up to the stereo.

    Miguel,

Here's a lesson in recognizing 6/8. I hope this primitive "tablature"
is decipherable - it needs to be read in a fixed-width font to make
any sense. If I've made any glaring errors, I'm sure someone will
    point them out. Here goes...

    Beginning of "The Mirror"
    4/8 (I think) changes to 6/8

      1234123412341234123412341234 - 4/8 time sig
ggg ggg ggg ggg ggg ggg ggg - guitar (chug-chug-chug)
                      sss sss sss - snare

      123456123456123456123456123456123456 - 6/8 time sig
ggg ggg ggg ggg ggg ggg ggg ggg ggg - guitar
      k s k s k s k s k s k s - kick & snare

    "New Millenium"
    6/8 changes to 6/4

     "out with the old useless"
      123456123456123456123456 - 6/8 time sig
      k s k s k s k s - kick & snare

     "how many times must i"
      1&2&3&4&5&6&1&2&3&4&5&6& - 6/4 time sig
      k s k s k s k s k s k s - kick & snare

Note that in 6/8, the kick tends to land on beat 1 and the
snare tends to land on beat 4. Other examples off the top
of my head include Pantera's "Walk," "It's Beginning to Look
a Lot Like Christmas," and the "Winnie the Pooh" song. :)

Another note: if you can count the beats cleanly with "ands"
in-between ("1&2&3&4&") then the bottom half of the sig is
likely /4 (quarter notes). If the "ands" don't work, then it's
probably /8 (eighth notes) or "higher."

For example, the buildup of ACoS (after the acoustic part)
    is a nice, easy-to-count 7/4: 1&2&3&4&5&6&7&

After a while it changes to 7/8. You can tell becuase it's
impossible to count it without skipping "ands":

The wrong way to count 7/8: 1&2&3&41&2&3&41&2&3&41&2&3&4
The right way to count 7/8: 1234567123456712345671234567

Make sense? I'll try to come up with examples to illustrate
    other sigs, especially odd ones...

Song for Eric is an a capella song by Tori Amos that Kevin took and revoked
the a capella from. He basically took her vocal track and played a bunch of
Chromakey type techno-indust stuff in the background. Something I heard
didn't go over well at all with Tori.

Normal Words is a kickass song from the Music Meant To Be Heard Demos. I
think it will be remastered and released on his upcoming demoes CD. Not
    sure.

Hmmm... from what I've always known, 12/8 is commonly considered to be a shuffle feel, used more often in jazz rather than waltzes. Not saying it can't be done. :) Yanni writes some nice waltzes in 9/8 and 7/8. I just used 3/4 as an >easy< example seeing as how I was introducing someone to time sigs. I figure getting into descriptions of triplets, feels, etc. would only confuse the poor guy. :)

Waltzes, as I've noticed and was taught in elementary school, are almost always based on counts of three. I only used 3/4 as an example as it was the most simple. :) By no means was I saying they couldn't have been in 3/8, 12/8, 15/16, or what the fuck. :)

Besides, polka is basically a waltz played on an accordion anyway. :) -- KorgX3 shits in the spandex lady's coffee. Oops!

Maybe ten years ago they were better quality, I dunno. But in the last, say, six years or so, they've made a whole lot of crap. Also, I don't have much experience with their projection tvs; those may be better quality then the regular stuff.

Brian Lundy wrote: >they kick serious ass for the price! The Yamaha's have won lots of >audio-phile awards, especially the flagship

Bullshit. they may claim to have won awards, but not in the REAL hi-fi world. And I'm sure some clueless magazines like "Stereo Review" may have given many awards to some of their more frequent advertisers. In all my years of reading "The Absolute Sound" and "Stereophile" I've never seen Yamaha get anything other than humiliated by cartoon parodies. Remember, I work on this shit. Yamaha loves to do bogus shit like installing proprietary front panel lamps that they set ridiculously high prices on, and typically they run a volt or two more than the lamp is rated for just to secure future parts sales. The use the biggest value fuses than Underwriters Laboratories (UL) will let them get away with. This way when there is a failure, the damage is maximized, as is the parts sales. Yamaha, Toshiba and Fisher are the kings of planned obsolescence, Yamaha just sounds better than the others.

Of all the brands you mentioned, Denon was the top dog. What you need to realize is: Rotel makes receivers, too. The Rotel gear is in the same price bracket as both Denon and Yamaha, but 10 times the construction quality, much better sounding. Plus, they actually give a shit about the customer AFTER the sale.\

BTW, your tips on cable routing are right on. The only thing I can critique is:

    >at $150 for 3 feet, but NEVER use >that black and red RCA cable that came with your audio components.

If your gear came boxed with cheap (or any for that matter) cables, you probably bought shit in the first place, stuff like that wouldn't benefit much from real cables anyway. Kind of like putting 18" wide, wrinkle-wall slicks on a stock four cylinder Ford Pinto.

    >Radio Shack cable is still shit, there's just more of it. A 14 gauge >wire by Monster or AR will be far superior to >any of that stuff. Here's a rule of thumb, if your not spending close >to, if not more, than $1.00 per foot for wire

Nah. The best bang for the buck in speaker cables are the Nordost Flatline cables. You can get them in bulk from Madisound for about $3.00 per foot for the 12 AWG, eight ribon conductor OFC copper. http://www.nordost.com/products/flatline.html http://www.madisound.com/

So what if you spend $60.00 on two 10' speaker cables, if you have decent speakers it's cheap insurance your getting proper delivery of the signal.

I need to know where and when I can get tickets...specifically the NYC and Boston dates. Yo, I haven't heard the two albums after Dogman, but that one is different than the earlier ones. I have the self titled and Faith Hope and Love. The are A LOT less heavy than Dogman. The songs are more musically oriented though, and Ty sings almost half the songs on the earlier ones. I reccommend the self titled one, I think song wise it is better than the other one I mentioned. Or hell, get the best of album. You can't go wrong there.

Anyway, the dates are July 5th and 12th I don't know which one is when. I saw Slayer about three months ago and they are VERY impressive to watch live. System of a Down (I think that's right) and Neurosis are the two openers.

I have to agree on the value of the Panasonic VCRs. We've been using the Panasonic PV-4664 (which is similar to the current PV-9664) for a couple years now. We're very happy with it. It has consistently better recording quality at SP and SLP than our other VCRs. It also has some cool features like commercial advance (fast forwards over commercials) which really makes TV shows flow more smoothly. If you watch Babylon 5 (and you should), watching without commercials is the only way to go... ;-) The price is decent. I think it lists for $249 and you should be able to find it for less (www.camcorder.net has it listed for $199). When I get another VCR it will be a Panasonic.

Well, I don't know what you expect, but my cable modem is all I expected it to be. For $40/month I can avoid paying $20/mo for an extra phone line and another $20/mo for an ISP so my cost breaks even. Plus, it is FAST. I downloaded a 70 meg file in 12 minutes the other day just for fun. ;) Having the 24 hour instant high-bandwidth access makes the internet much more useful. My wife and I now use it all the time for stuff like checking local movie times and so on.

    Hey guys,

Mike Portnoy asked to forward this to the Ytsejam... I figured I should CC it to Freaks (Marillion), Thoughts (Spock's Beard) and The Mirror as well... __________

    1. I am currently at the SABIAN factory up in Canada where I am developing my own signature cymbal line of splashes & stacks to be available in January of next year......

    2. Yes, it is true.....my side-project with Neal Morse is now back on! We are scheduled to enter the studio at the end of June for a week or so to hammer out some music. The project is untitled at the moment but consists of myself, Neal Morse (Spock's Beard), Pete Trewavas (Marillion) and Roine Stolt (the Flower Kings).

I know the side-project thing has currently gotten out of hand, but this one was waiting in the wings for me since last year and with Jordan now in DT, I do not want to do any further LTE albums...

    3. Also in June, I will be playing on a couple of tracks on Andy West's solo album. (the bass player of the Dregs) This is NOT any sort of side-project for me, I am merely being hired as a "session player"...

    4. I will be continuing work on my latest Drum instructional video which is pencilled in to be released around the same time as the new DT CD (Fall/October? '99)

It will include some of the DT live footage shot in Hampton Beach during Aug.'98, as well as studio analysis of LTE and new DT...

    5. Work on the latest DT is going incredibly well.... As I have been maintaining all along, I'd like to bypass any details, but I will confirm that the music is primarily finished and that we will begin the vocals and the final recording stages during June.

The mix will probably happen July or August and hopefully we can keep it on schedule for a fall release with a Worldwide tour to follow.....

THAT'S ALL THE NEWS THAT'S FIT TO PRINT FOR NOW......

Have I mentioned I also have a family to spend time with??? : )
