    Yo,
I live in New Orleans, but we are a musical wasteland(seriously), so I
would drive to Houston to see DT. Hell, a friend flew to Dallas a year ago
    this weekend to see DT.

Since so many of you are audio and equipment buffs, I could use some help
with mine. Nobody give me any guff over what KINDS of equipment I own,
first of all because it was given to me as a gift and secondly, because I
like it and it's all I have.

Anyway, I'm using a Teac AG-V8060 Audio/Video Surround Receiver, which up
until now hasn't given me any problems whatsoever (I've had it since
Christmas). But now that I'm home from school, especially now more in the
heat (I think it might have something to do with it), whenever I try to
pull the volume up any high than 1.75 (I usually don't bring it any high
than 2 or else it hurts my ears) with both sets of speakers on, it goes
into "Protect" mode. I just tried moving it a little further away from my
computer monitor (the right side was right next to it), but overall, the
unit doesn't feel hot. When I was in school, though, it almost always had
a fan running near it - would it be a good idea to keep it by a window or
near my box fan so it could keep cool? Are there any other ideas as to
why it could be doing this? I just like to listen to my music at a more
    than whisper level.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Actually, I guess I don't need help. Moving my receiver away from my
monitor helped, I guess - at least, it's not doing it anymore.

I guess the extra room helped with a breeze or something to keep it cool.

If there are any other ideas on how to keep my system running at optimal
efficiency, though, please don't hesitate to offer advice.

the music-vids that DT has on LIT and 5YIAL and I really, really, really

Spears, Boyzone and other sell-out-pop-sh*t-people do the videos!

This is the kind of statement that really bothers me. You think that just
because this kind of music "sells" that that makes the artist a sell-out?
Does it really matter whether they're writing and/or performing music that
appeals? I haven't seen much of her stuff, but in interviews and the
like, Britney Spears really seems to enjoy what she does and likes to make
the kind of music that she does. To me, this would say that she is NOT a
sell-out because she is doing what she loves. Do you really think that
you have to be a starving artist to have musical integrity? Music is
about doing what you love - not whether or not you make money at it. If
she makes money at it in the meantime, what's wrong with that?

Note that because I defend her, it doesn't necessarily mean I agree with
her style of music. I'm not a huge fan of mainstream music, but I'm not
as against it as some jammers are.

Be a little more open-minded, people.

My gripe with that type of music isn't the people who
make it, it's the people who buy it. They mostly only
buy whatever is popular and never think about the fact
that most of it is inane shit. I like that Britney
Spears song that's on MTV all the time, but that's
probably the only one they play that I do like. The
stuff I listen to isn't totally mainstream, but it's
not totally "underground" either. I just have nothing
but resentment for those people who buy whatever MTV
    tells them to buy.

I don't know. I think the Lie video is pretty good.

I think it gives the casual MTV viewer, who's never heard of DT, an
accurate idea of what the band and the music is about.

Plus, I really like when they cut to the tunnel. :)

I wouldn't buy it in a collection for it's own merit(as opposed to
buying it because it's a DT video), like I did for Tori and Radiohead
videos(not my favorite artists, but really good videos). But I certainly
wouldn't call it "bad", either. I like to pop it in now and then.

    >not totally "underground" either. I just have nothing
    >but resentment for those people who buy whatever MTV
    >tells them to buy.

Heh. My arguement is that you are likely a hypocritical bastard saying
stuff like that. I mean, I remember in Jr. High how I somehow acquired Bon
Jovi tapes and Def Leppard shirts and the like... It wasn't necessarily
because it was what my friends liked or because it was all there was at the
time. It was also because >I< liked it. Strange how I still have a hella
collection of BJ and DL stuff in my CD collection. Even further down the
road when I started listening to STP, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana, I still can't
and >won't< (even though alot of people will give me shit for it) say that I
don't like it. I can still pick out those old CD's and rock to them as much
as any Superior or Dream Theater album.

Now, to pin the blame on the people that buy the music is completely unfair.
Firstly, they actually >do< enjoy the music they buy and listen to, or they
wouldn't buy it in the first place. Secondly, what they listen to >is<
attributed to what they hear on the radio. Why? Because it is the most
accessible medium to pick up one new music. I'm sure the average 13 year
old kid doesn't hop on the 'net, go to Yahoo, and type in "Progressive
Metal." I'm sure 99% of the average 13 year old kids doesn't even know that
"progressive metal" is a musical form. But even given that 1% might know
about it, I wouldn't expect any of them to track it down and listen to it.
It's just so much easier to listen to the stuff on the radio that they like
    so much anyway.

I've used my little bro as an example and I'll do it again. He's a full on
3rd Eye Blind, KoRn, Wallflowers, what have you listener. He's somehow been
caught up in the hell-spawned telepathic mainstream mindlink that cautions
him to avoid listening to things outside of radio songs or he'll be lost in
eternal damnation forever. Anyway, I dropped a Galactic Cowboys CD on his
desk one day and he freakin' loved it. He thought it was great and wondered
why he'd never heard of them before. That's when I told him about the
musical birds and the bees, blah, blah, blah.

I've said it before. Whatever you do, don't throw anyone on the floor, play
DT full blast, and give them noogies until they cry out (dishonestly) that
they like it. It only makes them hate it worse and then they spread the
word to all their friends to not listen to it. I think, actually, something
like that is what caused the "keyboards are shit" idea alot of teenage kids
have today. If you REALLY want to make an impact on the future of
mainstream music, you have to take it slow and don't be forceful. Support
your siblings with what they listen to. Try to get them to pick up an
instrument. (It gives them alot of respect for talented players). Support
your local high school bands and arts programs.

I think, more than anything, that's the thing I really want to see from
people. I could care less whether they love or despise the kind of music I
(we) listen to. But if they can admit respect (however grudgingly) about
the players, singer, what have you, I think that's the first step in getting
this kind of stuff devoured en mass. :)

Look at me, I'm spouting endlessly like the bog of eternal stench. :)

Can anyone shed some light on how to fix guitar intonations. the proceedings? I cannot find any book over in this part of the world on it at this time, my guitar has three types of tuning going along. I think it would be better if someone mailed me personally so that other fellow jammers won't be bothered with it.

Well, following along with the discussions about DT's videos, I understand there are about 4 of them they put out...what I'm wondering is, are any of them available...I've personally never seen them, and would very much like to have them...If they're in stores or something, i'll buy them, or if they're on the net somewhere, no matter what size(don't laugh, I know of a site that has every single Fiona Apple appearance and video ever...heh) I'd like to know where so i could download them. As for what the discussion has really been about, videos are out there for the majority of people who care little about musical content, they care about image...they might dig the beat, or the words, but few care about what's really going on in the music itself, so MTV and videos cater to that. It's a shame there aren't more videos of stuff i like out there, because it would be interesting to see what images the director would match with the music, but hell, i like to listen to my music anyway, not watch it...:)
