someone on the jam said:
<<<The greatest thing is that if you are not a fan, the
album is great, and if you are a fan, the album is perfect. >>
whomever said this is so correct!
i played SFaM in my friend Becca's car, her first listen AND mine - i have been a progressive rock/DT/Yes/Genesis type fan for the past 5 or 6 years, and her music tends towards Metallica, GnR, and some other stuff...but even though she had heard I&W,Awake, FII, ACoS, and OIaL because i force fed it to her in MY car at various times, she was completely FLOORED by this one, much much moreso than the others. maybe as someone else said in a previous 'jam, the sense of completeness, of combining the different kinds of music, was what got through to her. either way, she is now out shopping for a couple of DT albums for herself. = )

Howdy, y'all.........
[Babs]> I believe the JFK Jr. bit at the end is to more or less just
symbolize how the sins of our fathers, get passed to the next generation<
And just what sins, prey tell, did JFK commit that his son would have to pay
for with his life? At least, that's the impression i get from your post,
which continued with;
>Like the lyrics emply "our deeds have traveled far, what we have been is
what we are. All that we learn this time, is carried beyond this life" <
Which, as i read them, have nothing to do with the father/son connection. It
sounds more like the connection between souls in different incarnations,
karma and all that good stuff we'll never understand......
Sounds to me like it's mostly a point-in-time reference, telling us the
time-frame in which that particular part of the story takes place.

DREAM THEATER +ACI-METROPOLIS PT. 2: SCENES FROM A
MEMORY+ACI-, East/West
+AFs-similarities: Queensryche. Helloween, The Tea Party,
Pink Floyd+AF0-
Dream Theatre has trumped the mighty 'Ryche once again
with their take on the often much-maligned concept
album genre. In a stroke of genius LaBrie and Co, have
taken all that is good about notable precursors in
genre and made it their own. With nods and elements
that remind the listener of Pink Floyd's +ACI-Dark Side of
the Moon+ACI- and +ACI-The Wall,+ACI- Iron Maiden's +ACI-Seventh Son+ACI-
and even the aforementioned Queensryche's +ACI-Operation:
Mindcrime.+ACI- LaBrie's voice is at his best producing a
mesmerizing melody that permeates the whole album.
Ranging from full out rockers to calm and mellow
crooning, this may just be the best DT album to date.
DT have taken the best of their past and molded into
their most consistent album to date. As to be expected
with DT, the musicianship is breathtaking without
being pure Malmstein-esque wank. Elements of jazz,
fusion, metal, and even rag-time combine for a amazing
collection of tracks which meld into a creative tour
de-force. The addition of a female vocalist (Teresa
Thompson) and a Gospel choir give +ACI-The Spirit Carries
On+ACI- and +ACI-Through Her Eyes,+ACI- an extra depth that is
simply awesome. On +ACI-Through+ACI- Labrie almost replicates
a torch singer, mixing and matching with some amazing
guitar from Petrucci. The addition of new keyboard
player, replacing Derek Sherinian, seems to have
sparked a creative surge in the band. Jordan Rudess
not only compliments the music well with his keyboard
playing but he has arrangement and conducting credit
for the choir. The beginning of Act II, opens with a
eastern tinged track with more than a few nods to
Canadian multi-instrumentalists The Tea Party,
complete with the smooth transitions from mellow to
hard edged rock. +ACI-The Spirit Carries On+ACI- features DT
sounding most like Pink Floyd, with soaring guitars
and background vocals and Lebrie singing at his
passionate best. A haunting piano, that leads into a
acoustic guitar, keyboard and spoken word piece fills
the middle of the 12 minute track. This includes the
dying sounds of the song mixed with thunder and
lightning. The concept of the album plays itself like
an opera, while not taking away from the songs
individually. Like some of the other classic concept
albums of the past 30 years, the individual songs
stand well on their and collectively gel into a
masterpiece. Like +ACI-Dark Side of the Moon,+ACI- +ACI-Scenes+ACI- is
a truly a involving experience that is best enjoyed
with candles, a darken room and a glass of your
favorite wine. Dream Theater are now the kings of
techno-progressive rock/metal. This album is close if
not my candidate for album of the year and would
feature on my top 10 of the decade. +ACI-Scenes from a
Memory+ACI- is one of the top 5 concept albums of all
time, an instant classic. +ACI-Scenes+ACI- is an essential
purchase and it should be huge+ACE- More info on the band
and all their side projects can be found at:

I've been reading the comments about SFAM story for
last couple of days and some of it makes alot of
sense. I'd just like to maybe point you guys to the
right direction. John Petrucci stated in an interview
after a clinic, that the story is roughly about
the MAN WHO'S TRYING TO FIND THE KILLER OF HIS WIFE
IN HER PAST LIFE.
This kinda contradicts with some theories. Was Victoria
actually married to any of the brothers? The Miracle
says he'd make her his wife. Maybe she was married to
Julian, that would make sense, but..... oh damn..
I'll just let you figure it out :)

I've actually met Thorne, and he's a cool guy. Not pompous at all. And if
you've ever seen them live, you know they don't take themselves too
seriously -- joking around the whole time. Honestly, how could you pretend
to be serious when you're using one of those guiboard things? It's the
ultimate in cornball musicianship. (The reason Ryo uses one in his solo at
Spock's Beard shows?)
The website suffers from the same phenomenon many websites suffer from --
it reads like a press release. They're trying to sell a product, and a lot
of people won't buy into it unless the band is pumped up to be "big". In
reality, Soundscape seems to be more of a project a bunch of musicians work
on whenever they feel like it / have time.
No defense for his voice, of course. I like it, but I can definitely see
how it could be taken as dog howlingly shrill.
Two awesome concerts this past weekend: Iluvatar on Saturday (played for
over two hours, no breaks!) and Type O Negative's Halloween show (w/ Puya
-- killer). Pity about the sleep deprivation though...

Actually it's Terry Brown, I asked him personaly during the chat. What I
don't get is, I read something on here that said Mike purposely didn't WANT
to write who did his voice in the liner notes. Why would he want to keep
this tidbit a secret? Terry Brown (Broon) also does the voice in the intro
to Rush's Cygnus X-1: The Voyage.

At least i figured out how the last 2 minutes really take place:
(Warning, real bad english coming on) !
this is what u hear on CD:
-------- = 9:30 - 9:48 = FF on Radio - Radio turned off
--------------------- = 9:48 - 10:11 = Music off - Walking to Door
-------------------------- = 10:11 - End = TV - Drink - Record -
Death
This is Real-Time:
Notice: - = view of Nicholas
X = view of the Hypnotherapist
-------- = 18 seconds = FF on Radio - Radio turned off
----------------- = 23 seconds = Music off - Walking to Door
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX = 36 seconds = TV (already on) - Drink - MUSIC IN
THE BACK TURNED OFF
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX = 23 seconds = Record on
X-X-X-X-X-X- = "Wake up, Nicholas" - Needle Scratching
- To tell it in my own Words: This is not Nicholas turning the TV off,
making a drink and putting on a record (BTW: Isn)Bīt this from "Clockwork
Orange", MP)Bīs favourite film?). Itīs the Hypno all the time. Listen to the
footsteps: Nicholas)Bī are fast, Hypnoīs are slow and shuffling. And Nic gets
killed !
- Did u notice that the suicide letter inside of the CD-case lies on top of
wooden old stairs, holded by a stone? That might prove that Nic is killed by
the (Reincarnated?) Hypno in his house.
- About the Reincarnation thing: This might be Vic)Bīs 2nd or 3rd time that
she has been reincarnated. Nic sounds like a 35-year old man to me. That
would leave a another period of 35-years between the day Vic was killed and
Nic was born. This might be the Third time Vic gets killed. Now the
Miracle/Hypno would be at least 101 yeears old (if he got to be a senator
after the Murder, he)Bīs still too old to be a working Hypno). It would make
more sense That he killed himself some years after the murder and then got
reincarnated. That would make him around 65 years, old enough for that slow
footsteps he produces(remember, he)Bīs searching for Vic/Nic all his life,
that might have taken his Life-Power).
Sorry about the bad english but this is so weird and hard to explain it)Bīs
even harder to translate it ! But at least the last 2minutes should be clear
now !!

This isn't like _Dune_. Child prodigies aren't born with an innate sense of language and information. Sure, they develop it very quickly, but they don't plop out of the womb reciting poems.

hi all, i work as a stage hand in hamburg. as a dt fan i already had tix for hamburg and hannover. now, my boss calls me up says wanna work on the 8th ov november? i say, get out a town, no way. later i meet a collegue, who say that he just got a job in on monday for dt. i srewed it up. i could have helped set up that shit and tell you in detail what's going on... but ey, since i still know the crew i'll get in before everything starts and take a peek. any special interests? mike, you'll sign my disc, won't you.
on another thing: my friend(drummer) really likes this one double bass part in 6:00 (i guess every drummer knows it). it consists of 9/32's. does anybody have another recording or video where this is performed the same way as on the album? usually live, or even on his 1st video it is played differently...
take care, seb

Here's a thought:
Nicholas has seen bits from the point of view of each of Victoria, Julian and Edward in his regressions. He has seen how Julian and Victoria died, but not how Edward died.
The last scene is him going to see the "old man" from Fatal Tragedy, but from the old man's point of view. The old man is Edward. He is old, so he listens to vinyl records. He has an old TV and a rocking chair. Korg was right in that we see flash between the driver and the occupant of the house, but the occupant is not the therapist, but the old man. The gasp is Nicholas realizing that the old man is Edward. The needle scratch is symbolic of Nick's state of mind upon waking up from the regression and the relization that Ed is still alive.

>guess he had a big say in that. I especially like the backing vocals in Home: >"Love! Deceit! Death!" Brilliance in backing vocals. Whoever heard of such a >thing?
Just dig deep in rock history, back to The Beatles and The Beach Boys! Lots of really brilliant backing vocals, and more.
Some of their stuff sounds terribly dated nowadays, and it's hard to understand for younger listeners today why Sgt. Pepper's and Pet Sounds are still called the best albums of all time by many people. I was listening to Pet Sounds a lot lately, and it's for sure that without the groundbreaking innovations of both The Beatles and The Beach Boys' Brian Wilson the whole music scene of today would look different. Not only did they write and record great tunes in shorter time it takes most bands today to put up their gear, their albums also had incredible productions for their time, and, maybe most important, starting around 66, they started making real *albums*, not just collections of singles.
So every time you listen to SFAM, don't forget to say thanks to those old farts ;-))

Julian did not know that Victoria was having sex with Edward. So why is it written that "their love renewed, they'd rendezvous, in a pathway out of view, THEY thought no one knew"? Why the fuck did they have to hide themselves when they wanted to meet ? (officially they were together). I understand that Victoria did not want Edward to know that she was with Julian again. But why would Julian have wanted to hide? It is written "they" and not "she".

Nicholas is NOT an old man.
He visits "an older man" who calls him "lad"
Even if he were 70 visiting a 101 year old man, the old man would NOT call him "lad" nor would he call the 101 year old man "an older man"
Nick is most likely in his 30's -- the same age as the band members. It's the only logical conclusion.

First off, SFAM is incredible, I have not stopped playing it. Congrats to everybody involved.
I have the CD and a set of MP3's that I downloaded from the Net. I know, I shouldn't of downloaded it, but I crumbled under the pressure of waiting.
When I did get the CD, wednesday of last week, I noticed that Regression on the CD begins differently then the version from the net.
This leads to one of three possibilities
1. The net version is from the promo album 2. Somebody was messing with the original version to create the net version. 3. The Canadian release of SFAM is different.
The differences are :
Net version is 1 minute longer Net version sounds like some rap-like beginning.

Now, this I like... You see, I'd like to think that DT wrote a really good mind-trek here and this fits in real good. :) Good call.
I hate to shoot some people down but the idea that The Hypnotherapist is Ed reincarnated taking his vengeance once again is really lame. I mean, the concept of reincarnation doesn't include that one is born with complete awareness (or is dominated) of one's past life (if any awareness at all). Taking that route is about as cheesy as another "Bridy of Chucky" movie. hehehe. I don't think DT would be so lame.
I mean, there's just too much coincidence for two people who's past lives were so involved to meet up in their current lives, one seeking knowledge of his past life and one completely dominated by his past life's personality. It just turns the story into cherry cheesecake. I know damn well if I found out that I'd murdered my wife in complete hatred in my past life and her new incarnation happened to cross my path, I wouldn't have any inclination to hurry off and slay her in some strange streak of vengeance. It's rediculous. Reality just doesn't work that way. But then, I know alot of people here aren't too attached to reality. :)
