I really liked that mostly James stayed on the stage
when they played instrumentals and didn't go backstage
like the last time I saw DT. That's cool.

Just like when Michael Bolton sings "I Found Someone" (Cher) or "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You" (Laura Branigan). Nobody but me knows (or cares, especially on this list) that he wrote the songs. On the other hand are his two covers cds where he mostly butchers Soul classics. I like his Opera one, though.

First of all, excuse for my poor English. I'm Spanish and this is a bit difficult for me. I was the other day watching "Images & Words, Live in Tokio" video and I think that I heard the melody of The Beatles' song "Within you without you" on Petrucci's solo after "To live forever" (I think it's called "Barf Bag"). It's just my imagination or Petrucci plays a part of that song?. Can anybody give information about this. Thanks.

I still contend that there are entirely too many junk web-pages out there. Their only purpose is to pad the ego of the maintainer. Many are of no use to anyone and should be deleted.

Now, if anyone could share information on how to avoid these pages when doing a search on the web, or search engines to avoid, I'm all ears (as I'm sure is the rest of the 'Jam).

    Hi,

I thought the sitar stuff in Home was JP with a Choral Sitar<SP?>. It sounded more like the choral than any real sitar or any sampled thing.

Sitar is 'SE' means three and 'Tar' means string. just my 2cents

Anyone notice that there is a similar group dynamic between JP and MP and Hetfield and Ulrich (at least that's the impression I get). Obviously everyone contributes to the song but it seems to me that JP comes up with most of music (I may be wrong specially now with Jordan in the band where he seems to have found a creative equal) and MP seems to have a lot of input on arrangements and editing of ideas. From what I gather in Metallica Hetfield seems to be the creative one while Lars is in touch with the punters and kind of pulls him back in he gets too far out there. I'm probably totally wrong if so I'm sure you'll all tell me :)

Oops! Ignore that message ppls. Thanks heaps Trent and all the other ppl who mailed me. There's some great guys on the jam.

Anyways, I was just thinking about some of the posts, especially about TDoE. I personally don't find this song incredibly moving and lifefilled- but, hey, thats not what its about. If I want to listen to deep, meaningful, powerfully moving music I listen to Kashmir by Zep, or Disarm by the Pumpkins or Indifference by Pearl Jam. If I want to hear kick ass playing and something to get me going in the morning I listen to DT or LTE! I think Rudess is great. I think most would agree with me though that as the keyboardists have come and gone they have got more and more tasteless (ie. more prog). For example Kevin Moore's Chromakey is probably the only side project/off shoot of all the DT members that isnt an all out wankfest. Derek's playing was pretty tasteful, but that was maybe because of the style of FII - but then he goes on to record Planet X. And then Rudess- what can I say? Anyways, as I said, its still cool. Finally, I heard on the radio that Virgil Donati's band On the Virge would be touring Down Under. Is there a place I can find this info? Thanks.

I do as well. But I am biased, being a synth player and one that believes more in orchestration than individualization.

    >if you're anywhere near Detroit, you need to try and catch a howling > diablos show....they get the whole band going on percussion >instruments, a six-drum showdown.....it ain't prog by a long shot, >but it's fun to watch......

The prog version of this would likely be Birdsongs of the Mesozoic. One guitarist, three keyboardists; all play percussion.

Here are some more thoughts on the European tour.

    1) The overall sound. The sound at the shows that I was at (Zwolle, Brussels) was really decent and balanced. It was a minor miracle that Zwolle sounded as well as it did considering that the venue was constructed like an airport hanger. When the sound is great, DT sound so much better. But, I do agree that the keys are always lost in the mix for at least the beginning of the show and I cant understand this. Why do a sound check at all when this continues to happen ??

    2) James and stage presence. As opposed to having James dart in, sing a few bars and then leave the stage for ten minutes, he is staying on stage with the band. The exception is the instrumental-based middle section of the show where he gets about a 20 minute break. I think that this is really a positive change. He seems more part of the band and more into the shows. And, he even seems to be enjoying himself more. I know that image is not music but I think that it enhances the impression of the performance.

    3) Jordan's work. Phenomenal. I have never really been all that impressed with the solos that "others" have played as they seemed to be geared towards showing that the player has chops at the expense of being musical. But, I was actually interested in Jordan's work. Great on air-guitar as well. (Aren't all keyboard players merely guitar player wannabes who couldn't make the grade ??)

    4) MP's vocals. After suffering through listening to MP attempt to sing over the last couple of years, he has really improved. I dont know how a drummer can hold a steady voice while banging away like a monster but he is doing it. However, I cant say that I am overly impressed with his choice of baseball teams. To win by having a convicted felon assemble the highest payroll in the league shouldn't count. Although I was impressed when the fatfuck (aka Roger) was able to struggle mightily to sneak his ERA under 5.00 by the end of the season ......

    5) Tour t-shirts. Way cool.

    Cheers, Mark Metzger mmetzger@comversens.com

But all over this album. [..] I like him a >lot. Nice solos, cool voices. I >think we all liked Kevin Moore a lot and I think Jordan is more in the Kevin >Moore style.

I couldn't agree more with what you said. I think Jordan brings in a lot more of a symphonic style. He uses a lot of 'real piano' sounds (like on FF or TSCO) and that gives the whole music a less aggressive and more musical touch (which is what I like about DT - it is Metal, yet it is music). And although that 'synth brass' section still sends shivers down my back, I think he is a great musician. He had 1 - repeat ONE - Keyboard in front of him at the concert and he got everything out of it, the solo was amazing. I saw Derek on 5YiaL and he 'needed' three.

    >>I think, therefore, I am! > >Coito, ergo sum, eh?:)

Er- Zeus, what you probably mean is 'Cogito ergo sum', I don't know what you were thinking but don't mix 'Cogito' with 'Coitus' ;)

    Guys,

I'm moving back to England this weekend, had a great time in the States but the job didn't work out the way it was supposed to...! So I will be unsubbing for a couple of months, but I will be back in the new year some time. Just a few comments to leave you with...

    1. The instrumentals on SFAM (imho) kick arse and I love the Jordan fusion elements...!

    2. Metallica did a poor job of Load and Reload (which, lets not forget was just the songs that didn't make the cut on Load). And I have yet to meet anyone who got into Metallica early who "loves" either album.

    3. "The Ladder" by Yes is a great album, they are also kicking major butt on tour - so if you get a chance, go see them you will not be dissapointed.

    4. What's the last thing a drummer says before being sacked...."Wanna try some of my songs...?".

    (a lot) Later,

Dave (a UK jammer - not in Alabama for very much longer).

Uhm ... I think there's something wrong with my Images And Words CD. The first song (Pull Me Under) just cuts off - where can I exchange it?

Another problem I have - it's easy for me to go off on a tangent.

    > Particularly > the parts I mentioned. I'll flat out state that James' vocal parts > absolutely make the album for me.

I was thinking about this a few listens ago. James sounds *awesome* on this album. I think he sounds better than ever. I got WDADU then I forgot about DT and then picked up Awake. I was immediately struck by James' strong voice. I couldn't ever come up with a rebuttal for my friends' "sounds too 80s opera style rock singing." On SFaM, he just sounds really great. Very strong and clear.

    [snip bits while collecting stones]

    > (C'mon guys, if we don't fill the CD clear full, we're gonna get bitched at > on the 'jam). hehehe. I sadly think this is somewhat true.

I can't believe that. I think it's just DT's style. They just love to jam so that's what they write and that's what they record. It seems to be working for them.

    > Look at Trial of Tears on FII. I totally love that song, > but why the hell is there an extended 5 minute instrumental jam in the > middle of it.

Maybe because that's what they wrote and that's what they wanted? I can't believe that they are doing it just to fill space. If *anything*, I would expect the opposite. I mean, extended solo sections do not a radio song make. In fact, I hate to say this but I don't see any of these tunes making the radio without some editing. It doesn't make sense to fill a song with an instrumental part unless that's what you want and you don't care what others think. And that's an attitude that I'm thankful for :)

What d'ya mean? I knew exactly what he meant, although by his philosophy I don't exist. :)

What is "deep musical content?" Coltrane (to name just one of many) played some *shit*! To suggest that what he played was not "deep" would really be off base. And he was improvising. Improv is rarely 100% improvised. It's far more often an improvisation on a structure. Like improvised solos over a song. The song was composed but room was left for an improvised bit.

One of my friends mentioned Direct TV is showing one of their concerts from "The Ladder" tour soon. I think this coming weekend, in fact. I could be wrong though... Best of all, he said it's free, to boot. :) Can someone confirm the date and time? I'm interested in seeing this. :)

Yeah, I saw the ad for it last night. They will be showing it multiple times from 11-25 through 11-28 (probably over and over on the same channel). The show is from the House of Blues Las Vegas, and, yes, it is FREE to DirecTV customers. Woohoo!

Well, if you look at the last phrase section in Home where Nicholas is talking he says "i can't keep away from it's clutch" in my opinion that is not meant to be "it is" rather its... am I wrong?

I have a question regarding the 15 seconds of heaven found at:

    New Millenium -> 1:22-1:37

I'm wondering if a particular sound is coming from the keyboard or is it John and his rack? The sound is this expanding envelope thing that sounds heavily processed and is most prominent from 1:25-1:26 and then again more prominently at 1:32-1:33. This is hard to describe as there seems to be a lot of layered things going on in there, so you really have to pay attention to isolate it. I just really dig how it sits on top of the sounds that are going on at the moment.... if ya know what I mean :)

It happens again to a lesser degree around 7:44 and 7:51 (interestingly both times here it is right after James says "feeling"), but it's even tougher to pick up there, 'cuz on top of the layers there's James' voice too.

Is that a keyboard sound? It's cool if it's Derek. I liked his shit, too. If it's John, this is just another place where his emotion is revealed in ways that aren't always apparent at first glance.

I saw Primus in Philadelphia last weekend......I was utterly disturbed by Buckethead when I first walked in :) I thought he was really cool though, e specially the robot dance.....I'm a sucker for the robot dance....pretty decent guitarist too. Anyway, as for Primus....I kind of wish they would have played Tommy the Cat and John the Fisherman (two of my favorite Primus tunes) but it was a great show. Ok.........in terms of Myung and the slap bass controversey in One Last Time.....I have played bass for a few years now, and I don't think it is possible to get that kind of crisp slap/pull sound from just tapping or regular finger picking as many of you have suggested. I think it is just Myung letting his hair down and getting funky for once :) It's such a small slap piece, but it is executed perfectly.
