    Hi jammers!
Thank you for all the answers. I can see much clearer now I'm blind (no,
    enlightened...).
The original posting I sent was meant to be a private mail but I sent it to
the jam by mistake. I'm sorry for that, but it helped me very much though.

Yes, there is a new Opeth, and it will be released in the US-- when,
however, is unknown to me. _Still Life_ is absolutely amazing-- easily
their best work to date. Although I obtained a promotional copy, I
still bought the import, and I'll probably buy the domestic version when
it's released, too. "The Moor" and "Godhead's Lament"... ooh. =)

Hrm, haven't heard anything from Cradle of Filth's new one. Children of
Bodom are spinechilling. Both _Something Wild_ and _Hatebreeder_ are
excellent, and their new live CD, _Tokyo Warhearts_, proves just how
freaking amazing they are. I personally prefer _Hatebreeder_ since
"Downfall" is constantly blasting on my Klipsches. =)

BTW, the new Katatonia is also very good.

Hey, all. I've gotta question for the bass players on the list. :)

I'm looking at getting a new 6-stringer bass for an affordable (under $1000) price. I'm mostly looking into getting a Washburn Bantam or an Ibanez Soundgear since that's all I know right now. The Yamaha RBX JM series looks very appetizing, too, but it's at the top end of my budget and I've never played a Yamaha bass and am unsure how comfortable I'd be with playing one.

Basically, I'm asking for advice on an affordable bass. :) I've seen the Ibanez SDGR406 for $590 (Musician's friend) and a Washburn XB600TR for $549 (Musician's Swap Shop via ebay, price pending) and the Yamaha RBX6JM (this one beckons to me fiercely) is $999 at Musician's Friend. What do I do? So many choices! :) -- KorgX3 would buy all three if he could. hehehehe. NP: John Tesh - One World Site of the day: http://www.despair.com/

Skarre asked: >Is this the way to play a standard 4/4 beat?

It depends on the feel. Swing/funk/disco/rock are all different. In straight rock, the typical manner is to have the snare emphasize the backbeat (2&4), the hihat playing sixteenths or eighths and the bass kicking on 1 and possibly 3 depending on the speed of the tune.

Slapping can be done on a fretless; Les Claypool does it quite frequently. As far as two seperate parts go on Through Her Eyes, I myself would need a couple of more listens before I became convinced that there was a second bass. Being a bassist myself, I'm always following the low end, and I've only noticed the one Pino Palladino-esque fretless part.

    Korg,

I used to own a Washburn XB600, and I personally wasn't impressed at all. I also own an Ibanez SDGR500, and personally love it. I've tried the John Myung Yamaha. (That will probably be my next purchase :) My advice: go to a music store that carries all three, and try them all out.

Yeah, but my point is that many Metallica listeners WOULD enjoy Load and Reload if another artist did them. I hear people that I know say that those albums suck but then mention that they like something else like Tom Petty or Phish or something. Which is fine but it's not as though these people listen only to speed metal. Plus, it's kind of a rediculous analogy to compare it with DT doing a "form of Norwegian accordion music" as you say. They haven't changed THAT much by any stretch. It's still heavy music. -Mike

Though I haven't played much fretless in the past, I thought that slapping just required a fretBOARD to slap against - I don't think the actual frets have to be there. The string could just as easily slap against the neck.

Frets aren't required for slapping, but they help a lot in the tone department. Les Claypool slaps & taps on fretless all the time, although you should by no means judge what is possible to do on the bass according to what Les Claypool does. And if there's two bass parts (i've only noticed one, but I'll go back and check), he's probably playing the fretless line and slapping a fretted bass. moo (sorry Cowgod, couldn't help it!)

What possible reasons (BEYOND it's not plugged in and the RAM not being seated properly) could there be for a computer not powering on when you hit the button?

To give some details, I've got a brand new ATX case/power supply with an ATX motherboard and PIII-450 processor. When I tried to run everything the first time, the power supply blew, apparently because the motherboard was bad. I sent the motherboard and power supply back to the compnay that I bought it from, and they replaced them. Well, when I finally got them, I put everything back into the case, plugged everything in, and turned it on. Nothing. Not so much as a power light blinking, no fans trying to spin up - NOTHING. This is seriously pissing me off, because I've had this five hundred dollar piece of equipment lying around in my room for THREE WEEKS and have not been able to use it ONCE. The oddest thing is that the closest I ever got to actually getting it to RUN was when it blew up on me the first time I tried to use it.

I tried taking out any unnecessary stuff, like the hard drives, and I also tried unplugging all devices such as video/sound cards. Still nothing.

I want to hear ANY reasons you can think of as to why this would not work, besides the obvious "Is it plugged in?" and the RAM not being seated properly, because I've already tried re-seating it three times.

    Hi there,

since we're talking about bass-guitars. I have another question. I really like the sound of fretless bass-guitars, and I would like to learn to play one. But is it better to start playing bass on a normal, fretted bass or could you start with a fretless?

    > But is it better to start playing bass on a normal, fretted bass or > could you start with a fretless?

I would say begin on a fretted. It's very helpful to know fret positions and such before trying to play a fretless because without frets you have no guide as to where to play on a fretless, except for your ear and the not-always-obligatory fret markers at the 3rd, 5th, 7th, and so on frets. But, if you're already a skilled guitar player, I'd think you'd have little trouble starting on a fretless, since you'd already be akin to the layout of the fretboard anyway.

But, saying that starting on a fretless bass is impossible would also say that playing a violin is impossible, which it still is, for me. :P -- KorgX3 slaps his bad bass. NP: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory - Soundtrack *I've got a golden ticket! I've got a golden twinkle in my eye...*

    LOL! That's hilarious! :)

    > Marc R: > So when Prince/Symbol performs Nothing Compares 2 U, he's covering Sinead?

Sounds weird doesn't it? I am actually going to go right out there and say, "yes." Why? Because ask anyone on the street about that new Prince song. They'll all go, "oh, he's covering Sinead." One guy in 10 might know it's really his song that he decided to record.

    > That sounds wrong to me.

The whole concept of "cover" songs sounds wrong to me but that's the way it is.

    > And according to you, prior to the advent of > recording technology, there was no such thing as a "cover"? Those > wandering bards in Merrie Olde England were all original then?

No. Don't confuse it. A cover song relies on a recording because a cover is when one artist performs a song that was originally made popular by another artist. Those wandering bards are just playing songs. Songs that people know as just songs. They don't know those songs as "Jim the Bard's" song and look at Phil the Bard all weird when he plays Jim's song. They're all just songs. But in this day of popular recorded music, a song is known to be not just a song but specifically associated with a particular artist.

EARN LIMITLESS RESIDUAL INCOME FROM INTERNET COMMERCE!!

    CALL 888-277-7691 TODAY!

We are seeking qualified representatives for our new Internet-based technology company, which is financed by a well-known, 15-year-old public corporation.

This parent corporation generates about $1.5 billion-per-year in gross revenue, and its top representatives earn from $1,000,000 to almost $3,000,000 per year!

Conservative estimates predict that in 5 - 10 years our technology company will generate between $10 and $20 billion per year, with our TOP REPRESENTATIVES earning ALMOST UNIMAGINABLY HIGH INCOMES of at least TEN TIMES GREATER than those of the parent company!!

Many INTERNET FORTUNES will be created over the next 5 years..

ONE OF THEM MIGHT AS WELL BE YOURS!!!

Almost everyone who is aware of the rapid growth of the Internet has at some time envisioned themselves:

    - Making huge profits from an Internet-based business, - Working entirely from home, - Spending quality time with their families, and - Forever leaving behind the boss, the office, and the daily commute. - If you have too, then please read on!

    CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING:

    - Today, only 18% of North Americans have Internet access in their homes.

    - However, Internet use is doubling every 100 days! In it's first major study of the economic effect of the Internet, the U.S. Commerce Department said that Internet traffic is doubling every 100 days and Electronic Commerce should reach $300 Billion by 2002!

    - There are 85,000 new Internet customers logging on daily!

    - Many different sources have predicted that Internet Commerce will increase at least twenty-fold in the next 5 years, and that within 10 years, standard retailing of products will largely be replaced by online selling!

    - Experts are predicting that computer sales will drop drastically over the next few years because most homes will be logging onto the net using simpler, less expensive Internet Access Devices.

    - Some companies are already generating massive revenue by directing their customers to welcome or portal pages that display ads and banners tempting them to shop online. For example, during 1998, America Online generated 3.2 billion dollars of revenue through its entry page.

    ADDITIONALLY:

Market research has shown the more services (such as Internet, long distance, cellular phone, and paging services) one company can provide to the same customer, the longer they are likely to retain that customer.

    - If they provide one service, they have less than a 50% chance of keeping that customer for one year. - However, if they provide two services, they have a 75% chance of keeping that customer for 5 years. - Finally, of a company can provide three or more services to one customer, they have a 90% chance of keeping that customer for AT LEAST 10 YEARS!

    THEREFORE:

The race is on! Today all major telecommunications companies are competing to:

    - Secure their share of the Internet marketplace by acquiring new Internet users and capturing their online dollars, - Keep those customers for the next several years by offering them multiple services in addition to Internet access, and - Ultimately generate huge profits when E-Commerce explodes and their customer base spends 40 dollars for every 1 they are spending today!

    NOW, IMAGINE IF YOU COULD:

    - Sell Internet service. - Sell your customers an Internet Access Device to connect to that service. - Profit every month from every Internet account. - Direct every customer, every time they log on, to your own Online Supermall wehre they could purchase every imaginable product or service. - Profit from every online purchase made by every customer. - Earn enormous residual profits from all business generated by a potentially huge network of others who you recruit to dupicate your efforts, and thus - Capture your share of the E-Commerce now and make a fortune as it grows.

"A wonderful idea for large company" you say, "but a fairy tale for me.."

    NOT ANY MORE!

Our company is already "leveling the playing field" and can provide all the resources and tools you need to help you start our Internet Business and position yourself today to make a fortune from the Internet explosion!

A PORTAL PAGE LEADING TO OUR E-COMMERCE WEBSITE We have designed an entry page to the web so that every time any of your customers or representatives logs on to the Internet to check their email or to access a website, they view this page which displays banners and ads directing them to our E-Commerce Store! And, you profit every time one of your customers or representatives makes an online purchase!

MULTIPLE TELECOMMUNICATIONS SERVICES We can keep our customers by offering them multiple, state-of-the-art telecommunications services, including long distance telephone service, cellular service, digital and alpha-numeric pager accounts, web hosting, an online university, and more! Furthermore, as more and more services deregulate, such as local telephone service and utilities, we will be competing for all of them!

A COMPREHENSIVE TRAINING WEBSITE The two top representatives in our organization have designed a detailed training site which clearly and objectively describes how to build a successful business. This website contains essential information on prospecting, recruiting, training new members, and acquiring new customers. Most importantly, as your business grows, it will dramatically decrease the time you spend training your representatives and free valuable time for you to continue building your organization.

SO, AS A REPRESENTATIVE, YOU CAN PROVIDE INDIVIDUALS WITH:

    1) An Internet account. 2) A convenient device with which to access the web. 3) An E-Commerce site at which to shop. 4) Direction to that E-Commerce site every time they log on. 5) Multiple other telecommunications services.

ALL THE NECESSARY TOOLS YOU NEED TO:

    - CAPTURE A SIGNIFICANT PERCENTAGE OF NEW INTERNET USERS, - PROFIT FROM ALL E-COMMERCE THEY GENERATE, and - RAPIDLY EXPAND YOUR BUSINESS TO KEEP UP WITH INTERNET GROWTH.

CLEARLY, IF YOU STARTED NOW AND OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS CAPTURED EVEN A TINY AMOUNT OF THE E-COMMERCE PROFITS ON THE INTERNET, YOU WOULD CREATE A RESIDUAL INCOME OF TRULY STAGGERING PROPORTIONS!!

REMEMBER!! - Our parent company has, over the last 15 years, created annual incomes of $152,098.00 to $649,550.15 for over 1,000 individuals. - Its representatives have a millionaires' circle and a 10-million- dollar circle. - It did, as a whole, over $1.5 billion in sales last year. - The revenue ultimately generated by our new company, which will ride the ensuing tidal wave of Internet Commerce, WILL LIKELY SURPASS THAT OF THE PARENT COMPANY BY AT LEAST 10 TIMES!!
