    Charles Dominici is the worst vocalist on the face of the Earth. I can stand
    his falsettoesque high range even less than I can stand LaBrie's. He is the
    SOLE reason I don't listen to WDADU. It may be an amazing album, but for me,
    he turned it into an embarrasment. Fortunately, I can still listen to the
    YTSE Jam.

    I only like JP when he's strumming chords. The Silent Man and Hollow Years
    are, without doubt, JP's finest moments. Ahem.
    Although, seriously, I really dig MP's playing on Liquid Dreams...I think
    he's finally learned to lay back a little now. Or maybe when they did SFaM,
    he'd become addicted to "the mighty fuckin' Q"! I read that someone's mate
    was whining that MP's playing on SFaM was sloppy, to whit I can only say
    "Bollocks" - I like that he's not all over the song now. Now if JP could
    take the same lesson from LD, then that'd be cool. Don't get me wrong,
    there's rarely any points on what they've written where I find myself
    thinking "Why don't you just SHUT UP for a minute?!", but I do like it when
    he does sit back and take a backseat. I think it's probably insecurity.

    In time signatures, the bottom number is the value of the note, and the top
    is how many exist per measure. 9/4 is counted as 9 quarter notes (2
    measures plus one), 5/8 as five eighth notes (per measure), 13/16 as
    thirteen sixteenth notes, etc. I would like to see DT try to incorporate
    something like a 27/32 or 53/64 time signature somewhere down the road. :)
    THAT would be "progressive." I probably could have explained all of this
    better were I not too lazy to dig one of my theory books out of my closet.

    ok ok quick lesson...The top number is the number of beats in the
    measure...the bottom is the value each note gets....for ex: you have 4 qurt.
    notes in a meaasure then it is 4/4 and if u add one qurt. then you have5/4
    ....simple hu. this goes for anything its all th same theroy! learn it its
    useful. now the 8 thing just means 8th notes u understand??if not E-mail me

    Just for kicks, I put Mindcrime, Pleasant Shade of
    Grey, and Scenes from a Memory in my CD player and had
    a prog-fest. Here's what my little brain could piece
    together:

    APSOG: definately my fav. The 'movements' fit together
    perfectly. It truly sounds like the entire CD is one
    song, w/ maybe a break before part 9. And while the
    parts were completely dependant on eachother (they
    sound kinda dumb when you just play one part, not in
    context), they are varied enough that they do not get
    boring.

    OMC: My beef w/ Mindcrime is QRs lack of variation.
    There are two styles on this CD, the heavy rock style
    and the twisted ballad style. Other than that, a
    decent album.

    SFAM: These songs sound great alone. But the only
    musical thread which appears to be holding them
    together is the M1 quotes. And IMO there aren't enough
    of them to hold the album together. The plot is one
    for a concept album, but the music doesn't fit.

    Just a few thoughts to mull over

    See, I just resubbed about a week ago, because I've been real busy with
    my job, which is for a web design company in westchester. So I haven't

    and content, and secondly, it is only really worth buying if you are on
    the YTSEJAM, or my mother. and of course, the obvious problem, the
    bleeping ADDRESS CHANGED. Thank god I hadn't had these things made the
    week before that happened! There would be a me-sized silouette in the
    brick wall I ran through on the way to mexico, where I could recoup my
    losses by starting a discount kiddie-porn slave ring.

    No, it's time to move on. so what I was thinking was make a few designs
    i have in my head(nestled snugly between those silly mitsubishi radio
    spots, the spice girls, and my third grade teacher with a robot head,
    spitting fire and disco dancing.), and put 'em up on my site, or
    something.

    Or maybe I could just speak to MP and see what he thinks. I'm just
    free-associatting here, like you people didn't notice. I'm just thinking

    I'd like to make an actual DT shirt this time, one that I could sell
    everywhere, to fan clubs, to fans, to anyone. I would need to get
    permission from the band and/or Atlantic for it, if I were to do it
    legally. And that's just assuming people would even be interested. I
    don't know.

    I am just back from the Cologne gig. It was f***ing amazing. Really cool!
    The Set was the same as the other German Gigs, and pleased everyones taste!
    The new songs are really good. JOrdon is more than worthy to play with that band.

    The best parts were the Key & Git solos. Just unbelieveable.
    Petrucci improvised over a flamneco riff, which lead directliy to Hollow Years.

    I read that Jordan made mistakes the other days... well I am not a key-player, but I am
    sure, today he made none (or only little). I am realy impressed by him. He ist soooooo
    fast and he plays really melodic.
    Also he added a new nice (saw) sound to the first part Peruvian Skies, which I liked a
    lot. It gave the song a really mean feeling.

    If somebody has a recording of the recent gig to offer, I would like to get one.

    Hi all,

    I just (re)joined the Ytsejam. I've been away for a few years. So I'm
    sitting around with my stack of DT discs and I got the urge to look them up
    on the 'net. I suspected that maybe a new album was out but I hadn't thought
    about it since Falling Into Infinity. So now I have to go get two new
    albums.

    Since I've been away for years, I don't want to bring back what has surely
    been discussed so maybe you guys can point me at some places (archives of
    this list?) where I can find the info.

    Three things I'm most curious about.

    How does everyone like the live album and the new Scenes From A Memory?

    What happened to Derek Sherinian??! I mean, I read the bit at
    http://www.dreamtheater.net/faq-idx.htm (4.9.1) but that's really sparse. I
    remember joking that Derek didn't have long hair and now the new guy does
    and... ;)

    I recently moved to New York City so I'm really hoping for a concert in the
    City. Looks like the American leg of the tour won't start until next year.
    Any word on concerts in New York City soon :)?

    there is no 5844, and the reason why has to do with your other question:

    in 4/4, there are 4 beats (I bet you knew that)
    in 5/8, there are 5, but each beat is worth only half of one of the 4/4
    beats....the first number represents how many beats in the measure, the
    second represents what type of note is worth one beat (8=eighth note,
    4=quarter note, 16=sixteenth note, 128= well, you get the idea)
    maybe this will clarify things:
          3/2: 1 + + + 2 + + + 3 + + +
          4/4: 1 + 2 + 3 + 4
          5/8: 1 2 3 4 5
          9/8: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
          7/16:123456712345671234567

        a good example of this how Surrounded goes back and forth between 4/4
    and 9/8

    I totally agree with you here!!! I had a friend burn me a copy so I could
    have one in my PC and in my stereo at all times and he said... this is
    cool music but towards the end it got really confusing and I couldn't get
    into a groove... he is a big rush fan and likes SFAM alot he just said he
    couldn't really groove to it... the more he listens to it the more he
    likes it!!! another fan!!! I think that once you listen to DT for a while
    you totally get in the groove for odd times... especially being a drummer
    and after watching MP and virgil Donati vids!!!

    After all the initial euphoria (since 26/10), I believe that some less
    positive ideas about SFaM are emerging...I saw also a very negaitive
    observation about MP. Not that I agree with these, I just wanted to say that
    some people are becoming a little more realistic about the new album - which
    is still great IMHO.

    I don't thinks so. I think LTE was really, really the
    best, then Platypus and Mullmuzzler. Working Man and
    Explorers Club are better than Plat. and Mull. but
    they were not side projects.
