Well, I've seen them live FIVE times, and each time it was a good show.
Like Dave Thomas said they're not flashy or anything, but sound very
    close to their CDs.

Ok, Im a big VH fan and I am on of the Few people that like every stage of VH
the same... I like Sam, Dave, and Gary the new Album is just as good as
anyonter VH album...They all fit well in the band in there own little special
way... This does not mean that im sad to see Gary go but I did like him in
there...I saw VH twice with Gary and both were great shows...he fit perf!
This was the first time in like 14 years that VH played thoes old David songs
live...That was the bad thing bout Sammy, he refused to play the old david
stuff like Mean Streats, and Icecream man... I love Sammy, and i have seen
him 3 times once with VH. But when you see VH with Sammy in the band you
know you are only getting half of what they really have to offer...Now i just
recently saw David open up for Bad.co (Bad co. sucked by the way) and Dimond
Dave was great!! HE had long hair again(well plugs) and he played all VH
stuff! it was great... He still knows how to Party!!I met up with him after
the show and got my pic and he signed my tic! I asked him " what are the
chances of u and Eddie working things out?" and he said "Just you wait" I was
confused by all this only till now...i guss he thinks they will ask him to
come back. I dont think so but u never know!! the Door is open... now we can
    only wait.
    later,

    Hell's Kitchen...

<< I'd have to second that idea that Hell's Kitchen is a great song. I guess that's my not-so-subtle hint, based on the concept that numbers will mean something. Maybe DT will consider playing this song live for the tour... >>

I personally believe that "Hell's Kitchen" is one of, if not THE BEST songs on FII...The structuring for an instrumental is wonderful with themes and foreshadowing...And, the kicker is high point right before it starts ritarding...The chord change is beautiful with the harmonies complimenting it so...Also, just for the record, "Anna Lee" and "Hollow Years" are runner-ups for fave track from FII...Merely another opinion stretching out of one of the ten-thousand lakes...Thanks!

    Hi there,

A couple of things: A review of the Zwolle show is up in the 'music' section at http://w3m3.fortysecond.net. Check it out. Also, I'd like to know if someone can help me to find out what the band is that was on the PA before DT started. It sounded kind of weird, with many musical influences thrown into one track, reversed spoken parts, Indian scales (I think), that kind of thing. Help would be appreciated, because I'd like to check them out... -- \= Richard Karsmakers - richard@fortysecond.net - ICQ #18645533 =/ | STNICCC2000; Dawn Crosby; GWAR; Diskmags; Shred Guitar; Allies | | "ST NEWS"; "W3M3"; "Twilight World"; Plantiac; "UVK 2000" | | FOG; Detente; Fear of God; Wowbagger the Infinitely Prolonged | | P.O. hi there,

yesterday I attended the zwolle gig, which was my 4th DT concert.

We arrived at the ijsselhal at about 19.30, where a long line of people was already waiting. By the time we got in, Tiles was already playing. I only heard 3 or 4 songs. I don't think the music was bad, but they lacked stage-presence (IMO), and I couldn't get into it.

The Dream Theater concert was awesome. I was standing the front, at Jordan's sight. His keyboard was placed in a way that you could see both his hands, while he played, which was pretty cool. I think the setlist was the same as the previous concerts.

The LTE-medley consisted of the intro to Paradigm Shift followed by the first part of Universal Mind, until Jordan's piano part. John Myung played along with the guitar lines. So it sounded a little different from the cd where Tony Levin was doing his own stuff most of the time. After that Jordan played a long keyboard solo, where he also used some sequencer riffs. The solo was very cool to watch, although it ended up being sort of a Kurzweil demonstration (IMO).

During UAGM, James held the mic in front of John P's face who tried to sing some of the higher notes and totally screwed up. Mike was kind enough to throw one of his ProMark 420 sticks to me (thanks Mike!). And afterwards, Jonh M and James signed my ticket. I was too tired to wait for the others to come out.

It was a good show, and the positive thing is that they seemed more cheer- ful then in the past and Jordan seemed totally into the music.

    Cya, Marc

is there any site out there with details on Mike Bahr's boots?

(and please, spare the jam any debate on the morality of such items or their creator, it's all been said already)

as for Tiles' live shows, they are a mixed bag.....if you're into shows for the music, you'll enjoy their performance.....but if the visual/stage presence is necessary for you to enjoy a show, you might not have the greatest time watching Tiles.

I've seen them three times, for what it's worth. The first time, I went in not knowing who was who in the band, and watching from the bar area. basically. Seeing a guy jump around in "stereotypically" lead guitar poses, i figured that was Chris Herin (although, to my credit, I was thinking, "Holy Shit, that's a huge guitar") That guy turned out to be the bassist, Jeff Whittle. He's got the most "moves" on the stage, and is the guy that's having the most obvious fun out there.

You can also catch drummer Pat Deleon cracking a few smiles between his monster drumming spasms.

On the other end, Paul Rarick (vocals) and Chris Herin are pretty serious up on stage. They smile, and all that, but they don't jump around and engage the crowd extensively. Rarick, as was criticized by someone at a Euro show, does pretty much look bored right up until the second he starts singing.

so, like i said, if the SHOW is the thing for you, then you might be disappointed by Tiles.....but, I think their music is good enough to carry the performance.....

and just like Dave said, keep in mind that this review, too, is from a guy that doesn't consider SFAM the be all and end all of music as we know it :)

Aye, the review was good, but did you have to repost the whole damn thing just to put your one line reply?

Please, people, it's just common e-mail courtesy, especially in a forum like this, to include only 2 or 3 lines of "reply filler." It just gets annoying having to scroll through something you've already read, searching for the sender's message, only to read a one-liner reply.

Personally, I think SFAM is DT's 2nd best album. Awake is and always has been my favorite, not just for DT, but it's also my favorite album of all time. SFAM isn't really an album, it's more of a story. It's fantastic, but when you listen to it in just bits and pieces, it's not as satisfying as the whole. Here's my ranking: Awake SFAM IAW LATM OIAL ACOS WDADU

If I could, I'd put the Hollow Years single somewhere at the top. The Way It Used To Be is one of Dream Theater's greatest songs.

    Hi there,

    > as for Tiles' live shows, they are a mixed bag.....if you're into shows for > the music, you'll enjoy their performance.....but if the visual/stage > presence is necessary for you to enjoy a show, you might not have the > greatest time watching Tiles. I mentioned that Tiles had no stage presence, and I do enjoy shows were it's mostly about the music (like Dream Theater for example). But with Tiles I just had the impression that their guitarist just wasn't into the music himself that much. That's just how he appeared. My piano teacher taught me several times that playing music is more than accurately playing the notes from the score. Once you know a peace well enough to play it without thinking about it, you can add more 'feel' to it. That's when you're making music. I think the major difference between DT and most of the newer progmetal bands is not that DT's music is that much more complex or technical, but the fact that all of them play their parts with great ease and don't have to stare on their instruments all the time. I'm not saying that Tiles was THAT bad, but the contrast with DT was very big.

    All IMHO of course.

    > and just like Dave said, keep in mind that this review, too, is from a guy > that doesn't consider SFAM the be all and end all of music as we know it > :) Me neither, allthough it's been quite addicting lately. ;-)

Awake has been my favourite as well. I don't know if SFAM will top it in the long run. One difference is that it took me several listens before I started to enjoy Awake. The months after that, I listened to almost nothing but Awake. I liked SFAM right away, but I'm not listening as intensively as with Awake.

I think this scene may be repeating itself. I've been trying to get some people into DT for years. No amount of subtle brainwashing has worked. After awhile, they could identify DT in two notes, and say "turn that off! Put on Fear Factory". After a forced listen to SFAM, they were blown away! They said things like "this is a totally different band", "so many different things going on" (huh? didn't you guys listen before?). One guy went out and picked up one for himself and his brother immeadiatly.

I don't know what the hugh difference is, but it seems like SFaM may be bringing in some new fans.

I am very curious and very VERY interested in getting a bootleg of Dream Theater's 1998 Christmas show at The Electric Factory in Philly. I already have an .mp3 of "Since I've Been Lovin' You" from the same show, so i know at least parts of it have been recorded. If anyone has ANY information about this I'd appreciate it. Private email at:

    would be great. Thanks,

    Guys,

Ok, so I've heard a whole bunch "2 cents" from people about SFAM, and there is one critisism I just don't get. "James sucks as usual...". Now I'm sorry but I disagree - James kicks my arse, he has done on all the CDs, and this one is no exception. He really comes over well on SFAM, he nails all the parts, puts across emotion and power when its required, he's great...!

I don't want to start a "James Rules/Sucks" flame war, this is just my opinion....but as far as I'm concerned James is da man for DT, and long live this particular line up...!

Dave (a UK jammer - rants as usual).

NP: Kings X - Tape Head (but SFAM is staring at me from my desk...I may have to put it on in a sec....).

Yep, you're the only one. ;)

Obviously, it's DT's best work since Awake...

All kidding aside, I don't see any real need to compare I&W, Awake, or SFAM. They all get "10/10" in my book...

Strangely enough in the new issue of the UK's Rhythm magazine (Christmas 1999), the guy who wrote the report for the Birmingham Drumfest slagged MP off.

As a member of the audience myself I cannot agree with his views, except for the crap mix .... but that was true for all the drummers playing and was dependent on where one sat in the auditorium - so shoot the sound man!!!

Some people were leaving during MP's set but many had travelled from all over the UK and further so they had trains to catch. Everything was running late (normal at these events) and Mike's flight from NY had been delayed by Hurricane Floyd.
