Hey... Some friends backed out of me for a +Live+ concert on Nov 14th at
the Hammerstein Ballroom. I put a pair of tix on Ebay but no one bid
yet. If there are and fans of +live+ please bid on the tix :)

I am definitely looking forward to the show and damned glad there are no
DT shows that night because I can NEVER miss a DT performance :)

Maybe I'm the only one but I'd dread if Van Halen reunited with Sammy Hagar.
Personally, I think the guy is quite possibly the worst lyricist ever to
live."only time can tell if we stand the test of time"?? What the hell is
THAT crap??And has anyone heard that lame Mas Tequila song he has? How bad is
that?! It's just a rewrite of that song "Rock n Roll Soul" that they play at
all the sporting events (you know- da da da da.....HEY!!!! da da da da). I'd
love to see Roth back in the band even if he is a major jackass. Just make
one more album with him and put up with him for one tour. That's all I ask....

Only their first demo. They have a second demo too, but they
won`t sell it because they never got to finish it, at least

I really like the Tiles cds, especially the first two, but from all the
reviews coming in, it sounds like they either suck live, or that
Europeans just don't like them. What's the verdict?

Well, I wasn't at Hannover, but at one of the shows I've seen I saw the
"mic pushing guy" mess up and MP shot him a dirty look that said
"Dude, your only job is to push the mic in front of my mouth when I
sing back up, which isn't that often, do you think you could try not

Am I the only one who thinks that SFAM may be DT's best work since IAW? Maybe even better, but it's hard to compare the two as they're such different types of music. What I do know is that this album sends shivers down my spine in SO many places. I've never had an album affect me like this.

I guess I'm just wondering if I'm the only one who feels this way about SFAM?

    Hi Jammers!

Do any of you know how I can contact Mike Portnoy? I spoke to him at a Toad's Place show a while back about doing a DT show in Vancouver, Canada and he said they would like to- especially if the COMMODORE BALLROOM (a great local venue) is available.

Well, the good news is that, after a long period of renovations, the COMMODORE is back, and it's looking fantastic! If someone could foreward this message to Mike, I would really appreciate it.

*** "If you get this message, Mike, could you guys fit in a VANCOUVER gig (at the Commodore Ballroom when you come to play Seattle? We're less than 2 hours drive away, and there are LOTS of Canadian DT fans here who'd love to see the band (and especially the new 'Scenes From A Memory' material live!)

Here's an interesting 2-person review that was printed in an online rock publication, Detrius. Contact Tim Wadzinski <tsw512@yahoo.com> regarding Detrius.

    KAI

    -----------------

DREAM THEATER - SCENES FROM A MEMORY (Joel A+, Tim A-) Elektra, 1999 [ http://www.dreamtheater.net ] 12 tracks, RT: 77:12 Joel: Legendary progressive metal outfit Dream Theater returns to action with their new release, METROPOLIS PT. 2: SCENES FROM A MEMORY. The pre-release hype for this album (such as it was) originally called for a more traditional album that featured the long-awaited sequel to "Metropolis--Part I" off the band's breakthrough disc IMAGES AND WORDS. While "Metropolis Pt. 2" was initially going to be a 25-minute epic, the band eventually extended it to fill up an entire album. The end result is new release SCENES FROM A MEMORY, an excellent concept album that seriously challenges AWAKE as my favorite Dream Theater disc. While it's place among DT fans will be decided in the months and years ahead, I think I can speak for most fans when I say that SCENES is a redemption from 1997's disappointing release FALLING INTO INFINITY.

Tim: I've already decided its place, #3 behind IMAGES and AWAKE, but honestly, there isn't a huge difference between them all. (It's like picking a favorite "Star Wars" movie from the original trilogy--you can debate and nitpick, but compared to everything else out there they all rule.) But I must say I think I'm tiring of the whole prog/metal scene a little, because I probably should've shit myself when I heard SCENES...but I didn't. Sure it's great but I just don't think DT can ever again release an album that will immediately and profoundly impact me the way IMAGES did, when I first heard "Pull Me Under." (Although, they do still seem to have that affect on newbies. I let a co-worker borrow SCENES the other day and by quitting time, he was on Amazon.com, ordering copies for himself and a friend!)

J: That's a great analogy, comparing those three DT albums to Star Wars (everyone knows the order goes Empire, New Hope, Jedi, right?). Thankfully I'm not an old fart like Tim, so I can fully enjoy SCENES in all its masturbatory glory (hey, that rhymes!). But seriously, the music on this album is *amazing*, a real throwback to the I&W days. New keyboardist Jordan Rudess makes an excellent addition to the group, as his style fits the band much better than Derek Sherinian did. Rudess' dueling solo with Petrucci at the end of "Fatal Tragedy" is just awesome. I completely geeked-out the first time I heard that segment.

T: Yeah, ya little shit, you enjoy that masturbating. Just don't go blind. I'm not saying I don't dig the music, which *is* amazing, it's just that besides the token ballads "Through Her Eyes" and "The Spirit Carries On"--which are both good--and the comfortably numb Pink Floyd- ian parts Pete talked about last week there isn't much here in the way of concise songwriting. But that's obviously not what they were going for, so no skin off their asses. They wanted to be all OTT progressive and play a thousand miles per hour, and they did. I just wish some of the cool heavy parts were as hooky/memorable as the mellow stuff...

J: If I'm goin' blind, my dear friend, it's not from the masturbating but rather your breathtaking logic. "There isn't much here in the way of concise songwriting." Huh? Did you confuse DT with your Menudo CD again? You must be, because the heavier songs on this album are certainly memorable for me. The main riff on "Overture 1928" is classic DT all the way, ranking up there with the great ones like "A Change Of Seasons" and "Under A Glass Moon." In addition, the heavy, almost grungy lead on "Home" is a wonderful counterpart to the sitar intro and general weirdness of the song. I also really enjoy the little bits of the original "Metropolis" that they sprinkled throughout this track and "The Dance Of Eternity," because they manage to lift stuff almost directly without making it sound cheesy in the process. I will grant you that these songs aren't as instantly gratifying as something like "Pull Me Under," but I don't agree with the sentiment that they aren't "concise." Few bands can make a twelve- minute epic go by quickly, but Dream Theater manages it. Even so, I listen to this disc more for the overall experience than a few individual tracks. And as an experience, SCENES FROM A MEMORY is a worthy successor to my second-favorite DT song ("A Mind Beside Itself" is number one, of course).

T: Settle down, Beavis. Before this gets out of hand lemme just say this is like splitting hairs here. When a band puts out material this good I almost feel obligated to try and find something wrong with it! A lot of these songs have about *10* songs' worth of riffage and subtlety packed into them--I'd love to hear the viciously cool groove in "Strange Deja Vu" given its own full song, instead of just parts here and there--and I admit sometimes this gets to be too much. But I gave it an A-, I like the album. The psychotically fast keyboard and guitar solos, and the crazy Tetris-like flourish, in "Fatal Tragedy" have to be heard to be believed, and I really dig the evil Eastern/ Egyptian/Arabian (let's just call it "exotic") flair given to the epic "Home." And, per usual with prog metal, there are countless little cool parts scattered throughout these 77+ minutes. I'm glad DT rebounded from the subpar FALLING INTO INFINITY, but these guys are so good they're cursed: What can they possibly do to really, truly get any better?

I'd have to second that idea that Hell's Kitchen is a great song. I guess that's my not-so-subtle hint, based on the concept that numbers will mean something. Maybe DT will consider playing this song live for the tour...

I saw them at Powermad this year. I thought they were pretty good live. They're not overly "flashy" and don't have tons of stage presence, but they are all very good players and they sound the same live as they do on CD. I thought they did a pretty good set, and would like to see them again. Of course, their set would have been even better if they had played "Reasonable Doubt", which is easily their best song.

Remember, though, that the above opinion comes from someone who doesn't think SFAM is DT's best CD (gasp!), the best CD of the year (shock!), or the best CD of all time (gah!). So there you go.
