i think he was talking about construction-wise... i agree, i dont see why,
if the fretted version is already in stores, the fretless would take a while
to be seen on the market. i assume they have to make a few more changes than
simply using a different neck, but still, it can't be THAT big a difference.

Umm.. and my old drum instructor practically forced it down everyone's
throats to go to Mike's clinic, when we were having class. (of course none
of us went, and I'm kickin myself for that now). He announced it right in
the middle of the class and was like "go check this guy out!", and he was
big on the classic drummers like Buddy Rich, etc. You can consider that a
recommendation for Mike. Personally, from a drummer's perspective, Mike
maybe sounds a little sloppier than usual on some of his fills on the new
album, but most of the time he is CRYSTAL CLEAN! Especially on Awake, and a
lot of FII too. I&W doesn't count, cuz of those snare triggers.

I always thought it was weird that people would use the analogy for relationships "like a brother" since most people I know strongly dislike their brothers (or have disowned them). So if Sammy still feels like brothers, then maybe he still wants to beat some Van Halen ass ;-)

They should play sections of Dead Again in between Acts 1 and 2 -- the local prog metal band in Eugene (Floater -- used to be thrash, now extends their songs live and write songs that are hard to mosh to on purpose) shows scenes from random movie between their sets during the intermission...

Well now... The Jammers' CD is Dead. Long Live the Jammers' CD. I was ready to go with it -- I got one submission from Nikki Brooks. Everybody ese promised me stuff but never sent it. Such is the way with jammers.

Hello together!! I've seen Dream Theater in Hamburg / Germany yesterday. IT WAS GREAT !! The Opener Act TILES was boring the most time, they played well, but the vocals were monotonous (I hope I´ve spelled it right).

Dream Theater opened with Metropolis Pt. 1 and after the long instrumental part, they came in with Overture 1928. I don´t know the whole setlist, but they played Lifting Shadows of a Dream, Hollow Years, Peruvian Skies, Lines in the Sand, Another dayFatal Tragedy and many other stuff of the new album(I´m not so familiar with the names of the tracks). Then they played two songs from the LTE 1 - Album :

Paradigm Shift, Universal Mind (Absolutly Mindblowing). After that the (Zugabe in English) last songs. A Medley with Pull me under, A Fortune in Lies, Under a Glass Moon, Erotomania. And there was only one solo in the Show. Jordan Rudess played very cool stuff, but very freaky. This was unbelievable. He played with a fast sequenced line, really cool. After 1:45 the DT - Show was over, that was too short for me, and the rest of the audience, but they didn´t come back again.

    So long Markus Brune

    >< I can't speak for anyone else on this mailing list, but I'm happier than a pig in shit that DT are playing an LTE medley. This could be the most interesting tour DT's ever undertaken. ><

Oh definitely. I must admit that Paradigm Shift and Universal Mind are some of the songs I liked the least from the first LTE, but that will still be a sight to behold. I'm very interested to see Myung playing it. Maybe he'll break out the Chapman.

    >< I think most on the list would agree that everything on Magna Carta is very good to excellent and would not dissapoint a fan of DT. (except maybe Tempest; more Celtic than Prog) ><

I disagree very much, and I don't think I'm the only one. The music of most Magna Carta bands are contrived, unoriginal, and uninspired. The only good Magna Carta band is Enchant, who are very good. I've heard some clips from Lemur Voice and their music seems pretty good, but it was only two songs. But other than that, bands like Ice Age, Shadow Gallery and Dali's Dilemma are completely unoriginal. All of the "super-groups" (Black Light, Liquid Tension, Mullmuzzler, etc.) are all very good, and that's the only good thing about Magna Carta. Hardly any of their bands tour because Magna Carta can't support them. Besides Tempest and Caliban, the only other different-sounding band is Magellan who is progressive rock, but their songs are so horribly-written they're not even worth the time. Imagine "As a Man Thinks" with bad vocals, or Explorer's Club without the great guitar solos and wild drumming. All in my opinion of course, but I feel very strongly about this particular opinion.

    >< Sure enough, DT dropped to #19 on this weeks cd now top 100. ><

I'm impressed. I thought for sure they would drop much further down than 19.

Hell's Kitchen is probably my favorite piece off of FII. I think the main reason for this is that I LOVE the use of the tritone to act as a leading tone... If you don't know what I mean, just listen at about 2:01. When they come in with that new theme at that point, that's the "augmented fourth" of the current key signature. It's a GREAT way to make your melodies go somewhere. John Williams uses them a lot in his movie scores, and it's used a lot in sci-fi type stuff. I just can't get enough of that particular little trick.

Damn, even just listening to this now gives me goosebumps. I LOVE this piece - it just rocks all over. My favorite tracks on FII would have to be Peruvian Skies (it just ROCKS), Hollow Years (to me, it just hits a nerve for some reason, very emotional), Hell's Kitchen, and Trial of Tears. As much as I know that it's not their best album, I think that some of the things people say about it are just unwarranted. This album is extremely proggy, and has some incredible grooves and melodies on it. I think that SFaM has a lot of FII influence in it, despite the fact that people have been saying that it makes it almost appear that FII never happened. The first time I heard the radio edit of "Home", the first thing I thought to myself was, "Wow, there's a lot of style that's being pulled out of FII for this one." Granted, the rest of the album doesn't have as much, but there's definitely a lot of the rock aspect of FII in the new album.

As for Surrounded, that's one of my favorite tracks off of IaW. But then, the entire album is just amazing.

I got into Awake first, but UAGM was the song that made me go out and buy I&W > (after seeing it on the Live in Tokyo video). As for Infinity, I don't think it was bad, just not what the die hard prog fans really wanted. I've actually heard > people say it's their favorite. It's my least favorite, but whatever...I just wish they'd used the demo version of TAMP, and dropped the horrible Anna Lee. I > used to not like JLMB, but I dig it now. This is pointless, I'm rambling. By the way any of you that have heard about Aghora...I've heard their album, which I > think will be released january or so...this album is incredible, prog fans, especially the ones who miss Cynic, will love it. It's all I've been listening to, > besides SFAM of course.

Yeah, up till SFAM, FII was my favourite album. One thing I've always liked about Dream Theater over some of the other bands in the genre, is that they haven't completely lost touch with reality and still have the pop music element. Whilst I have no problem with super proggy bands, sometimes I like to hear a simple catchy lyric or riff, rather than just a mass of notes and pretentiousness. Then again, one problem I have with this new album is that sometimes they get a bit too cliched and some of the songs are too close to other songs. It bothers me with the Home/46+2, Through Here Eyes/Hollow Years and Spirit Goes On/Pink Floyd things. I can't help thinking about these other songs when I hear it.

No shit! I've done the math. In order to keep our little dancing bear, KorgX3, in "Perfect Symmetry", he'd have to be 720 feet tall and weigh approximately 15 U.S. tons. <short> (219.5 meters - 13607.3 kilograms)

    Hi!

Since the best ftp-server around (Adam Pyes) seems to be down (just in the middle of my Queensryche-live download session!!!), is there any alternative to get ahold of live mp3s?

    Thanks,

hi folks, just got back from hannover and here's my full account with all that I remember: on monday(hamburg) i was in the club at around 1230pm, cause they were supposed to rehearse. well, JM did and then went off for a bass clinic. don't forget, it was tour start and they had intensive soundcheck and finally started rehearsing at around 5 pm. some anecdotes i already mentioned. how about Mike:" we should have never written it that way" while he was trying to sing backings and play drums at the beginning of fatal tragedy(during the beat contractions before "lad did you know a girl..). they played most of the sfam songs on the setlist completely and worked on transitions. thus, I knew the setlist and that was kinda not so cool, because during the gig my element of surprise was gone. in general the reception in hannover was a bit warmer and not so "an audience of musicians stares with mouths wide opened at the stage", more movement(including that one guy on the balcony who just grabbed the fence and 'let my hair flow'). the stage was setup similarly, jr on the left, jm, mp centered and jp on the right. after mp complained during mondays rehearsal that there wasn't enough light on him,'there's a llotta shit going on here and i have to see that' they moved 20 par cans to the front( for those interested, they had about 140! par cans and 12 cyberlights and then some, so - great light show). three spots. monday they kind of missed oout on jordan. when he played solo the spot was on jm, that was a bit better on tuesday, but maybe also intended. btw, tho following are just notes, no jazz-police ranting, they rocked. on monday you could definetely hear that it was tour start and i am glad i saw them in hannover, too. (still monday)jp didn't seem sharp at all, and mp wasn't satisfied. he had a look that said ' we are not really smooth so i'll just smack this cymble until it bleeds'. sound wise, JR went quieter and quieter, until, in the beginning of PMU, where you really should be able to hear him he seemed gone (same on tuesday btw.). during home the volume went really high on both days. I finally put my plugs in and a lot of people around me were checking theirs, so that was Really loud. tuesday? man, a new band. not they were bad on monday, they still rock on bad days, but tuesday... JP seemed to have a worm up, sound was crisp and they played and actually had fun playing. JR smiled even more than on monday (you gotta love him, looks so nice and really friendly - compared to a certain other person), jp interacted with everybody and this, this, this animal. i talked to briefly on monday, so nice, but he played incredible. lots of fills in every song, improvising, bringing my headbanging out of sync, so that just stood there looking and thinking. motherfucker. he was just out of it and now it's time to bring in my dad, who was also there. aftere TTT was over I went back to him and there he is, smiling, clapping, yelling for an encore. he grins and says "das war super"that was super, he was especially fond of mike (go figure, you were really on top of the game) and said i especially liked the song with the white guitar (meaning the acoustic, hollow years, which he new) and the first encore (PMU). one of the best concerts he has been to(i dragged him to) in years(beating Malmsteen twice, satch and what not). the setlist was the same and since they'll come back and play Met 2 in spring that's cool. it seemed like a summary of what dt has been up to so far and satisfied over all. i had a hell of a good time(daddy also bought sonny a shirty) and will do back-to-back games again.

    thanks DT, seb

oops, Tiles, the support: pardon me, but living color guitar sound, with halloween voice and vocalist who acted gay and guitarist who acted so gay(no intended dicrimination, but it's the same look as Joe Lynn Turner or Mark Boals, this isn't pop music, the drummer was drumming his ass off and between songs the guy says(singsangs'we'Re happy to beaee here, indeeeeead) , and songs that just didn't flow at all I have to give 1 out of 6. one song was really cool thóugh, but i couldn't catch the title. no offense, but they really sucked(IMHO). they got a spotlight on tuesday, which was really good since the vocalist was mainly in the dark on monday.

so... WHERE THE HELL DID YOU GET IT?!? :-)))) god, I can`t wait to lay my hands on that album. So far i`ve only heard two songs (actually, a clip of Satya and Immortal bliss in its entirety) which i downloaded from their site. http://www.veilmaya.org/aghora in case anyone`s interested. I really like them... of course, I`m a big Cynic fan also. Damn, it was such a shame that such a good band made only one album :-(. But anyhow, Aghora is more than a great substitude... oh, btw... I STILL didn`t get my copy of SFaM. YET! And all of you already figured out the story... :-)).
