Ever the pessimist, I have to say that (while
definitley possesing the possibility to happen) such a
thing is unlikely. Maybe I'm just getting jaded in my
old age (18 yrs) but I can't help but think that DT
placing so high is anything more than a fluke. I'm
not trying to offend anyone here, but how many N'Suck
and Backdoor Boys fans can you picture listening to
either version of "Home"? I can't. And I don't think
it's likely to happen (and I'm by no means
complaining). DT probably aren't going to compromise
everything they've worked so hard for up to now just
to have a hit record. I'd love to be wrong, but I
think #60 is as high as we'll ever DT go. But hey, 73
is definitley good. How high did the rest of DT's
catalog place on the Billboard? Anyone know?

Yeah, and you know WHY they debuted at #73? Because the damn stores
RAN OUT of the cd! I know, because I went to replace my ailing copy
today (original attempted suicide on concrete stairs). Best Buy
didn't even have it in stock! It was a total disappointment, and I
let 2 ppl know I was pissed. (Like they cared, right?) If stores
had ordered more copies (or if the record company had pushed for more
albums to be put on the shelves), DT would have been closer to 40.

I stand corrected. I don't have all of the discs, so I
was never able to put it all together. (Those early
discs are hard to get.) So how do they all fit
together? Is there some story? Are they musically
related? Is there a title for the whole story?

    Hey,
I just checked Billboard magazine @ billboard.com. Dream Theater debuted at
    # 73. That's pretty damn good. That is with no air play, no single to
promote the album and no promotional info in any record store. Way to go
guys. That proves what a great fan base DT has. Everyone wins! I am
curious where they go from here.

    Hey Jammers,

Well, I have spent my last week and a half enjoying SFaM. This album
blows my mind. I am not going to contribute to the discussion of the plot
at this time. Just wanted to say how amazing I thought the album was as a
whole. It gets better with each listen, because I hear something new each
    time I put it on.

I am also quite excited about the Metropolis 2000 tour. Dream Theater
with the Dixie Dregs and Spock's Beard, that is a progressive feast. I
can't believe they are going to put something that awesome together. I
can't wait for next year, I want to see this now!

My final thought involves one of my classes this semester. We have to
write a 10-12 page final paper for philosophies of the self, and I was
thinking I might either be able to do a 10-12 page interpretation of SFaM
or some other way to incorporate Dream Theater into my paper. Maybe I
could do SFaM along with another concept album. I could do something like
SFaM, O:M, and maybe 2112. Rush would probably provide excellent material
for such a paper, especially with concepts of self, etc. This could end
up being really cool and fun. I didn't think a long paper could be such
fun, but it just might be. I could just listen to music, compose my
thoughts as the music goes along, and then make an outline and put it
together in a logical manner. Well, I must get back to work, but I hope
to be posting some more as this work progresses. I would also like to
hear what others think about this.

    Later,
    Kevin

The do play it live and they have actually recorded it. It wasn't released
on the album though, since Charlie spoke about it with his good friend
David Grohl, who's ex-Nirvana, and found out that the former Nirvana guys
didn't think it was in good taste. Seems SOD isn't as anti-everything as

    Hi all,
I'm looking for a few people who would be interested in tabbing out the
entire album of Age Of Impact.
When I first got the album about 6 months ago, I started on it myself, but
never got around to finishing it.
I've almost finished Fate Speaks (solos and all) but I'm having some
difficulties hearing Murphy's solo due to the "fuzz" he uses for it. I need
at least two or three other people who might be interested in helping me out
with the rest of the album.
Note though, that I want this tab to be done exclusively by these people,
and the tab won't be released until its finished or we decide to release it
    in an unfinished form.
If anyone's interested send me a private email, don't clutter up the 'jam.
    :)

Oh, and since a lot of the album is done using 7-string it would probably
help (though not essential) to have one, as I do :-)

I think I have found some significance in the newsclip at the end of FF, which in my opinion answers two very vital questions surrounding the entire story: 1) Who is the Hypnotherapist really? 2) What actually happens to Nicholas after the record scratching/assumed struggle?

Listen carefully to what is said on the TV news. The reporter makes reference to a member of "American nobility". At this precise moment we hear the action cut to the outside and the slow, gravely footsteps. Although Edward Baynes the Senator was not nobility by title per se, his title and responsibilities to the people reflect those of "true" nobility. At any rate, the coupling of this reference and the footsteps leaves no doubt in my mind that this is telling us that the Hypno-dude *is* in fact the reincarnation of the senator. As far as Nick's fate goes, given that the Hypno is the senator, the quote from the news making reference to a "long string (or is it line?) of tragedies" tells us that Nick is going to die; this is said a split second before the quick footsteps lead to the "open your eyes, Nicholas". "Long string" refers to the ceaseless battle that the souls of Victoria, Ed, and Julian face from incarnation to incarnation. The killing of Nick by the Hypnotherapist is just another instance of these souls doing battle. Maybe I'm a total crackpot, and I hope this makes sense to the rest of you, but the placement of it all just seems to lead to this conclusion.

Saga has resumed the chapters of the story of Golden Boy on their latest album, Full Circle. That album contains chapters 9, 10 ,and 13 of this "saga." The band had stopped adding to them during their commercial sound exploration years, but have returned to their roots, so to speak. An excellent band for any prog fan to check out.

Cool! It's great to see other Saga fans on this list! Although they don't exactly get too crazy with weird time signatures and shredding guitar and key work, they DO have some very good explorative music work. Some of their early stuff, like "Careful Where You Step", "Ice Nice", and "Don't Be Late" really suck you in. They tend to be a more atmospheric band; not crazy dynamically, but they write songs that draw you into the story they're trying to tell.

Dt fans would enjoy Saga, methinks. Pick up World's Apart or even Generation 13 for a taste of them. Then seek out their other albums (which are a bit harder to find). World's Apart is definitive Saga. Gen 13 is their concept album from 1995, and is also very enjoyable.

I've always thought one of the most definitive songs was 21st Century Schizoid Man off Court of the Crimson King. That CD was basically the start of prog rock and the song was very ahead of its time. Its also got funny time signatures, interesting instruments, poetic lyrics, virtuosism etc.

The latest Classic Rock has hit the newsstands here in the UK, and it's quite a DT-intensive edition. There's a lengthy interview with Mike Portnoy (with input from Derek Sherinian about his dismissal and Planet X), a very complimentary review of Scenes From A Memory (4 out of 5), and a readers' poll for the all-time best drummer, which returned Mike in eighth place. Ahead of Lars Ulrich, for a nice change. :-)

    Yuouuhuuoooo

    DT made it again :-)))))))))))))))))))))))

They've entered the German top 100 album charts at possiotion "8" !!!

Bush's new one is on 19th possition and Stone Temple Pilots's at 42th :-)

Germany is not like USA. The most people dosen't go with the wind (at least in the music scene).

Hip Hop, Grunge, Alternative and the other shitty trends are comming form USA.

72th in the US billboard charts is a huge disappointment. Don't forget Dream Theater are a US band. Even FII was at 52h possition.

I JUST HOPE THAT ELEKTRA DON'T LOOK ONLY AT THE US SAELS.

Btw, German charts are after US and UK the most importent charts in the world.

Sorry if the following has been mentioned already (I haven't read the last 10 jams yet) but I thought this stuff might be worth mentioning...

First off, people are all fussing about WHO fell on WHOM in the murder scene. The clincher though, is we forget that at the time of murder, Julian and Victoria were very likely being caught IN THE ACT! They're "laying down for the last time", remember?

And if I can speculate about sexual habits in the 1920's, I'm thinking that missionary style is a lot more popular than it is these days.

With that said, when Edward shot the first two shits, it hit Julian in the back while he was on top of Victoria!

Understandably freaking out, she begins to scream with her eyes closed.

As Edward comes closer to turn the gun on Victoria, he asks that she open her eyes to see who is about to murder her. Only by her gazing upon him can his revenge be complete. She'll momentarily see the pain in his eyes as he saw them in a lover's embrace.

Finally, inevitably he shoots Victoria UNDER Julian. Nobody needed to be moved.

    ********

Also, has anybody mentioned the similarities between Julian's michief and the story of The Prodigal Son?

He leaves to (for lack of another city) Las Vegas for some gambling and very possibly drug use. Both acts equate to her unhappiness, his irresponsibility and the picture of him being the Prodigal Son.

Finally, like the Prodigal Son, he's welcomed back with open arms. Victoria's open arms (something else was wide open too, if you know what I mean)

The harsh twist is, however, is that his extacy is short lived since he is murdered shortly after.

    *********

Finally, some nitpicking on the cover art. Someone had said that the face on the cover is both Nick's and Victoria's. Well, though I admit that the eye on the right might be feminine, it is definitely NOT the eye that appears in Victoria's black-and-white photos on the cover. She has a rather "sleepy" eye, which the larger eye does not. Also, you can see the whites of her eyes while the larger eye is completely blacked out. Finally, she appears to have plucked her eyebrows and the larger eye's brow is kinda bushy.

Regarding the man's photos around the top of the cover underneath the "Dream" in Dream Theater, don't you think it looks kinda like David Arquette??? Yuck! I hate that no-talent! If I see one more AT&T commercial with him having an intimate "moment" with that over-adoring fan, I'm going to puke! The look in that fan's eyes makes me just sick! "Did you see my game-winning catch? Triple Overtime!"

    Blow Me.

Also, another tiny criticizm of this otherwise OTHERWORLDLY album, I really cringe when I hear Victoria's circa 1950's "sound effect" scream during the murder scene. Victoria's screams are the same screams that have been used in horror flicks for decades. The voice inflection is so obvious to me. I really wish they could have gone with an ACTUAL scream rather than one they stole off a "spooky sound effects" CD sampler.

I guess this pet peeve of mine goes back to when I was forced to watch the Wheel of Fortune with my mom back in the day. The same laugh/applause track was used in every show and it was so ANNOYING to hear the same guy make the same noise in the audience twice a show for EVERY SHOW!

    Anyway, enough ranting.

This album is Dream Theater's best. They probably will never top it. It's good to be back on the list, by the way.

    Take it easy!

Yeah, but I think even the keystone bonehead cops back in those days wouldn't consider it a suicide when the suspect is found with a hold in his back and his cock still in the supposed victim. hehehe. But that's just me. :) Eddie could have always paid them off. :) -- KorgX3

    >Other notable debuts include the Genesis hits package >"Turn It On Again" at 65, Dream Theater's "Scenes From A > Memory" at 73, >Irish popsters B*Witched at 91 >with "Awake & Breathe,"

Kinda surprised at the Genesis package beating SFAM....i mean, Genesis is one of my favorite bands (even in its current incarnation), and I had absolutely no clue it was coming out.....does that speak to the still large genesis fan base, or the smallness of Dream Theater's? I think the latter....

At least "we" beat those irish spice girls wanna-bees

Anyone look at the 5 years ago/ten years ago features on the billboard charts? Ten years ago, the New Kind on the Block had 3 albums in the top 35, just though I'd let you know

5 years ago, Queensryche's Promised Land was #15....it had hit a peak of #3.....any clue what Q2K's peak was like, compared to SFAM? Or what I&W's highest charting was (if any?)

    Ahoy,

After listening to the end of the album cranked up last night, I'm sure of this one. Someone had posted this theory a few jams ago, so this is just to confirm it... my apologies to the original poster - I can't remember who you were! :)

'Cut Scene Theory' (it seems an appropriate title)

    - Nick is woken up by the hypnotherapist (note: 'open your eyes Nicholas' ... same as Edward's speech when he kills Victoria in 1928) - He walks to his car, starts it, drives home - Song music fades to his radio - Car pulls up at house with radio playing... he turns it off and kills then engine. - Nick walks to the house (note the gate of his walk... moderate speed) - He unlocks the front door, then shuts it. - CUT TO MOMENTS BEFORE NICK'S ARRIVAL ... NOW INSIDE THE HOUSE - the TV is on (as Portnoy said, the JFK Jr. death report is used to signify present day [and perhaps a foreshadowing]) - "Unknown Person" walks to TV (a slower gate now than previous footsteps) and turns it off - "Unknown Person" puts record on (end of Finally Free) - "Unknown Person" walks to bar * LISTEN CLOSELY ... you hear Nick pull up *outside* with the radio playing (I think in the left channel)! - "Unknown Person" pours drink - Nick enters, sees record player is on, and walks over to it. - "Unknown Person" moves upon Nick whose attention is on the record player. - "Open your eyes, Nicholas!"

    Final thoughts:

    - The unknown person in the house is the hypnotherapist (once Edward Baines) ... his use of the phrase "Open your eyes, <person's name who I'm going to kill now because I'm nutty>." gives it away. - He kills Nick because he can continue his revenge on Victoria this way. Call it a 'Soul Vendetta", haha. :)
