Some comments that other reviews dont seem to be emphasizing that much.

    1) The SOUND !! I love the sound of this CD.

    2) James. Longtimers will know that this comes as a surprise but I think
that James has really hit this one in stride. I love James' voice when he
sings under control. He has the proper level of emotion and it was not
gained by screeching. (Now if he could only appear a bit more happy as a
    person !!)

    3) No low points. On FII, we had You Not Me, Anna Lee and TAMP. And to be
honest, I was never really a fan of JLMB either. I know that there are some
who love these songs, but for me, I just cant stomach them. I really love
the demo version of TAMP but those Club Kokomo sounds = yucko !! I never
can listen to FII straight away. And, it made it hard to recommend the CD
to anyone (Mr. Happy didn't help either .....). Major addition by
    subtraction.

    4) Home. I remain *completely intoxicated* by Home. The Indian take on a
Dimeola-type theme at the beginning is TITS !! I am not in agreement at all
with whomever said that the intro was too long. It should be longer. This
is right up with the best of the DT classics. This should be mandatory
    material live.

MP - PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE play Home in concert even if you dont do the whole
    CD !!!!

    Cheers,
    Mark Metzger

PS - This comment has been said a lot but thank god we dont have that shitty
    DT font anymore

    Hello Eric,
I never claimed to be "noble" - however that concept comes in to play=
I've never presented myself as someone who is suffering by
parting with this item. Nor have I made it seem like I am doing this out=
of some humanitarian motive. I just thought someone else would
like this more than me. Simple enough, I think. As for the fact that I =
am auctioning it off, it is less labor intensive for me to post
this on a site where people go looking for items than it is to go looking=
for someone willing to pay what *I* consider to be the fair
market value of this disk. To be completely honest, the auction format i=
s potentially a better deal for whoever wins, as the winning bid
could be the *opening* bid (considerably less than what other people have=
paid for this item in the past). Not likely, you say. I've been
the only bidder on other items, and gotten quite nice deals as a result. =
Admittedly, possibility and probability are not the same things,
but the fact remains, that I am not asking some ridiculous price for this=
item, and so it is harder to argue that I'm out to screw Dream
Theater fans (or somehow lacking in nobility as you might say).

I appreciate the fact that you probably feel that you are exposing wh=
at you view to be glaring inconsistencies in my statements (i.e.,
    a. that I am a Dream Theater fan, and b. that I am selling - pardon - auc=
tioning off a rare CD which I claim to enjoy). I however feel
fine in what I am doing. As Hume wrote, If you are asking me to be consi=
stent, you are asking me to be silent.

I no longer listen to the disk as I have grown tired of it. Instead =
of letting it collect dust on my shelf, I decided to see if anyone
else would like it more. I am not a fan to the extent that I hoard my cd=
collection like a miser. I'd rather keep the things I listen to
regularly, and move the parts of my collection that I don't. There are p=
eople who are interested in collecting a band's entire catalog,
and I respect that. I see no point in keeping that for which I no longer=
have a need or a desire. This would be more appropriate in the
hands of a true collector, as it is a collector's item.

Regardless, I respect your opinion. Don't bid on the disc. Thank you.

    Namaste,
    Bracken MacLeod

Little tidbit I liked (besides the fretless work in Through Her Eyes,
which gives me shivers... ooh!) from Mr. Myung and his Magic Bass:

Slap-happy technique at the 2:08 mark of track 10. Nice... clean...
    Myungy goodness!

Does this album seem to short to some of you? I have a tendency to

    Just something to chew on..
Maybe Victoria was the evil one in all this. She falls in 'love' with two
brothers, turns them against each other, and gets killed. The only reason we
see it as a tradgedy and horribly unfair to Victoria is becuase it's
basically Victoria (as Nicholas) telling that part of the story.

Alright, let me get the obligatory massive praise for SFAM out of the way
first.. This album rocks so hard I can hardly even believe it. I listened
to it with headphones on the very first time and it was excellent, but at
higher volumes it is just tremendous. Someone else on the list mentioned
that they weren't compelled to listen to SFAM like they were other discs,
but I feel the exact opposite - this one just grabs me and forces me to
listen like almost nothing else I've heard for quite a while.

I'm not sure if this was mentioned in the recent days, since I've been
only skimming through jams to avoid the spoilers on the story (just got
the CD yesterday), but am I the only one who thinks the verse riff in Home
just kicks all sorts of ass ? Not only is the riff heavy as hell, but
the transition from the part just before it just makes me want to die and
go to heaven right now. Of course, all of Home rocks major nads, but that
part in particular floors me every time.

Other favorite SFAM moments (as of now, I've only heard it all the way
    through 2 or 3 times):

    - Just about all of Fatal Tragedy, but the guitar solo where John descends
down a scale tremolo picking parts of it.. hard to describe

    - the chorus in Strange Deja Vu

    - The great contrast between BTL and THE. I know contrast is very common,
but this really struck me the first time.

    - Almost all of Home, but especially the middle section with the gambling
and orgasm. I also like the addition of the Met1 vocal line(s).

    - The middle of Finally Free, Victoria's murder scene. The way it kicks
into that with the chords and then the dramatic riff with the simple but
driving beat under it, accompanied by the gunshots and screams gives me
chills every time. First time I heard it my mouth opened and I stopped
and just stared at the stereo in shock at what had just happened.

    - James has some terrific emotive vocal lines throughout, just adding some
extra touches to his pronunciation and feeling he never really did before.

    - The line "Then a shot came out of the night." This line just emphasizes
the tragedy of the whole story. I love it. The whole story is just
captivating, I've never really paid much attention to any lyrics (DT
included), except Rush, but the ones on SFAM are just outstanding and
    engrossing.

    - I actually like the ragtime piano part. It's excellently played and
fits into the crazy, all-over-the-place style of TDoE.

    - The ending drum solos from Mike in FF. My favorite is when he goes nuts
and totally off the rhythm with the double bass and then comes back in on
time when the guitar riff starts over again.

I could list hundreds of other awesome spots, but i need to get back to
focusing on SFAM for now. :)

Damn, I love the fact that this is one of those albums you can just talk
about practically forever, for both the story and the music. There's just
-so- much crammed in there, this is one dense freakin' album. And I mean
that in the best possible way. :)

    Hi 'jammers,
I was just wondering if anyone here has heard "To Live Forever" live--
I'm sure someone has. ;-) This song is absolutely amazing. I was
listening to the rendition on the Xmas '98 CD and was blown away by the
ending lyrics contributed by Kevin Moore:

            "I found you where
            They left you there
A passing word that's gone forever

And searching my memory for answers
I saw the words of a letter you wrote
She said 'You don't have to live forever,
You don't want to live forever.'
            And everything's changing now,
I don't want to live forever."

(quoted from the unofficial DT songbook at
    http://www.dreamtheater.net/songb7.htm#V16 - (C) John Petrucci and Kevin
    Moore)

Something in those lyrics stirred a memory of SFaM-- perhaps I'll pop it
back into my CD-ROM? ;-) What might this imply?

No new theories here, just wanted to offer my congratulations to the band on SFAM. So far I've liked it more each time I've listened to it. I think this is the first time I've ever put on a CD, played it from beginning to end and just sat and listened--no TV, no magazine, no computer (okay, technically I stopped it with a couple minutes left--roommate came home and I had neglected some chores...actually, all of them).

And I'm sure it's been mentioned numerous times already, but I felt a twinge of excitement when I realized that Nicholas' words at the end of The Spirit Carries On correspond to what he says in Regression. How about that, I figured something out on my own!

    Excellent album, guys.

is (I know I will get a lot of differences of opinions but) that Nicholas is actually both the Miracle and the Sleeper (not Victoria) and the Hypnotherapist is Victoria. She exacts her revenge on both the brothers for the Miracle killing her and the Sleeper putting her through all of his gambling and drugs. I know it sounds a little far out there but it makes sense if you are as drunk as I am. The brothers are twins and will always be connected. What do you think?

I'm sorry if this has been posted here in the last few days, but I haven't been at home, so I haven't read any jams since Thursday afternoon. Anyway....

I was reading and rereading the lyrics when I noticed a passage from "Strange Deja Vu" :

There's a room at the top of the stairs Every night I'm drawn up there There's a girl in the mirror Her face is getting clearer Young child won't you tell me why I'm here?"

Now, is there any connection between the young child Nicholas is speaking (thinking?) to in that stanza and the girl on the cover of I&W? Could that be Victoria herself, maybe? After all, her thick, curly hairstyle does remind me a bit of Shirley Temple, who was popular around the 1920's, I'm told.

    Take care, Mark Peters epididymisle@earthlink.net

After listening to the album for the third time today, I think I can offer some thoughts on it... I don't have much to say, except: WOW!!!!! Just like someone said a few jams ago, I expected this to be big, but I didn't expect this album to be SO fuckin' amazing...

It's great to see the guys going back to their "old style", which I think was kinda set aside with Derek... I don't have anything bad to say about him, I didn't like him at first, but after watching 5YiaLT my opinion about him completely changed... However, Jordan's entry in the band seems to have given them a new life... I was kinda relieved to see that James's voice's as good as ever, I have to admit I was a bit worried after OiaLT... I don't have to say how great the John's and Mike sound, everybody's already said that...

I have to say I like Act II more than Act I, mostly because of the explicit references to Met. 1 in Home and TDoE (I know there are lots of them throughout the album, these are just more evident to me)... Home is definitely my favorite track, because of what I just said, but Strange Deja Vu, Fatal Tragedy and Finally Free are also amazing... Just like someone said, I can't quite tell when a track ends and when the next one begins, the album seems like one whole song to me...

Whew... After catching up with the last 18 (!!!!) jams, I have to say that you guys rule... All of these theories are great, I won't offer my version 'cause I've only listened to it 3 times, haven't been able to quite figure it out...

    Hi all,

It's so bad that all you folks are talking about the story and everything while we in this part of world haven't even seen the album yet. And it's the last week of the month so can't even buy it even if it were available. But, would have been great to see the album cover or to hold the cd in m;y hands. :-(

Any way so what does a DT freak do when he can't get the new stuff??? Ha! he/she reads all the reveiws by other fans and trys to compile the whole story so that when he gets the cd ...rather then wondering fand being blown away by all the singls notes and words and what nots...is kinda ready. But can anyone be ready for the stuff DT's gonna give us??? Well, count me out from that group. Even now that I'm listening to the Met:1 and practicing it for a show with our band, every single time we play the whole thing makes us wonder its mindboggling enough just to play it as a cover but how to write things like that. Not only that, continue to top it through out all these years with other pieces. Thank you guys for the wonderful experience all through the years and we the fans can only hope that there is a lot more. The only complain????? From me personally is that whenever you play the seven string JP, sadly, we can't perform it in front of the crowd. After FII there had been a big growth of fans here in Bangladesh and a lot of us older geeks want to play them the older songs (perhaps a totally kick ass compiled version of ACOS (I won't dare to even think of playing the whole thing). I was so dissapointed when I realised the G# sweep of the ..Dimension (LTE2) started from D# note of the low B. Oh Well, I guess I have to keep saving till I can get my hands on one of them. By the way, I while every one has been busy decoding the story, can anyone say on which songs were the 7 string used in this one?

Anyway guys, have a great and safe tour.

    -Shams

    >< One thing that keeps on puzzling me is that Mike has said that the story is similar to "Pulp Fiction". Why did he say "Pulp Fiction" and not another movie that was based around visions of the past? Nobody in Pulp Fiction had visions of the past. The thing that was different about PF was that scenes did not go in chronological order. ><

Oh of course that's the only connection. Like you said, the songs in SFAM didnt actually happen in the order they're presented, I think that's obvious. I think that Strange Deja Vu is probably the first song in chronological order. It's about Nick having dreams and deja vu of this woman. I would think that hapens before the actual therapy. It is because of this strange deja vu that he decides to see a therapist.

Actually, now that I think about it, I'm not toally convinced that Nick dies in the end. I'm confused about the whole regression therapy thing...in this state of hypnosis, you supposedly see scenes from your memory replayed in your head. Then what is Through Her Eyes? That's not Nick's memory, that's something he actually did. He actually visited Victoria's grave. It can't be from his memory. There are several other songs that I feel were not realized in hypnosis, but things that happened *after* the hypnosis. If I'm correct, then that would mean that a song like Through Her Eyes happened after Finally Free, which would mean that Nicholas was not killed. I too think of something every day, none of which are probably right. I'll post some more general observations of SFAM later.

Nope, not in any of the books I've read on the subject (at least two dozen) - plus, I've been regressed three different times by two different hypnotherapists, and no music was played at any time.

    And then he said:

    > I still believe Nicholas is the reincarnation of at > least Victoria AND Julian.

OK, why does everybody keep saying this? Maybe I missed something in the lyrics (I haven't actually read them, only listened to them 8 times now) BUT, in the hundreds of cases of past-live regression I have read about, I have NEVER heard of two souls occupying one body. "But what about people with multiple personality disorder?", you ask. Well, I think that is more of a temporary "possession" rather than "dual-occupancy". ;^)

Anyway, if anybody's interested, I was able to identify at least 4 past lives while I underwent those regressions, with names and details. I also identified persons around me in those lives, who are now (in this lifetime) my sons and ex-wife. I even learned why my ex-wife hates me so much :^) but I won't go into that now. Suffice it to say that past-life regression explains a LOT of personality conflicts (and affinities) with various persons in your present life. It can also help you understand where you got your talents, your fears and "hang-ups", some of your likes and dislikes, etc.. I HIGHLY recommend past-life regression to everyone - you will learn a lot about yourself (hmmmm, didn't DT say the same thing throughout SFaM?)

    Larry

p.s. If you don't believe in reincarnation, then how do you explain child prodigies?

p.p.s. I you think this stuff is wacky, wait 'til you hear about being "Pro-gressed" into FUTURE lives. This has been done to several hundred people in America and France, with the results categorized and studied - and the similarities in their reports are AMAZING. Now THERE's an idea for Metropolis Part 3!

    Hi all,

there is two points still worth making in the ongoing discussion:

    1) What about the two * two shots heard? No one has explained this, but there is a possibility: The obvious explanation would be the first shot to be a miss! Edward misses Julian and has to fire again. He then kills Victoria with two more shots. The police will draw the conclusion that *Victoria* was shot at three times, and then Julian would have shot himself with one shot! See?

    2) Why assume that the reincarnated Ed murders or even attacks Nicholas? The hypnotherapist reveals himself to be Ed and Nicholas gets surprised, thereby making a gesture which makes the needle jump. What happens then is an open question. Maybe they become gay lovers, what do we know? :-)

BTW, I rang my brother after first listen and told him how lousy the album is. After the third listen I had to call him up again and take it all back! I LOVE it! This may be the best DT album yet! And you people who have complained about a lack of common musical threads on the album, listen again. There are lots of common themes on this album, which will be explored in the common weeks, I'm sure.

    take care

    Stefan

Uhmmm... I heard some bootlegs where James did have certain problems, but I saw DT 3 times live and James just kicked ass, both with his vocals and stage presence... And I DO know how a missed note sounds :)

OK, you can give all the documented proof you want, but the fact is and will always be that not one of us knows whether reincarnation is even an actuality, so anything is possible in this story.

On a side note, I would assume that in reincarnation, only you're soul remains, in a different body. But if hypnotism is used in past-live regression, and hypnotism only effects your brain (since the soul is abstract, if one even exists), then how is your brian going to know about any past lives? Maybe it's all "hooey." =]
