This cd will now be the standard by which all progressive rock will be measured.
Just like Metropolis Part I spawned 100 DT wannabe bands who tried to write their own Metropolis, and just like ACOS opened the floodgates for 20 minute epic-type songs, Met Part II has just raised the bar once again.

You should (the person who I am quoting below), and everyone else on this list should read the "Otherland" series by Tad Williams (4 books, 3 of which are complete). It will be quite an investment of time (each book is like 700 pages), but it combines all of the elements of fantasy, virtual reality, mystery, etc. I think any DT fan, esp. if you like puzzles and mysteries like SFaM would get into this series just as much as they are into DT. I'm serious, there is that much depth to this story. Also, it gets into a lot of subjects like the one this other jammer that I have quoted below was talking about.
I am really serious about this... I know you guys will love it. Like DT, the series is really, really complex and deep, so as Mike P. would say, it may be an "acquired" taste - but well worth the investment of time. I know only a few of you will actually read this, and even less will actually go out and buy the books... but I just feel compelled to tell you all about it (I just finished the 3rd book), and I have the same feelings of excitement about sharing them with friends (you guys) as I do sharing SFaM with my other friends.
If you actually read it... or need the specific title of the first in the series, please email me... I would love to get a correspondance/discussion going about it.
Trust me... everything you like about the depth of DT, you'll find with this series.

Hey, nobody here seems to be surprised by the fact that John Myung DOES NOT play a Chapmaan Stick on this album. Well i think it's definately unintentional, sense there is nothing going on but music at this point (ie not plot in the background). I thinks its one of two things A) that anoying little sound you get when you run a plastic pic across a laminated acoustic gutair (amplified), at least my acoustic does this, B) a harmonic of the left hand running up the string like in 6:33 and 6:45 of Finally Free, just a higher string (especially if he is using nylon strings).

The band pays for everything. Sure, they might not pay upfront, but trust me, the record company will charge EVERYTHING they do/spend on a band. Everything from a music video, production costs, down to paper clips used in the office. The band pays for everything. And record companies are really "creative" about what they'll charge against an artists' royalties. Bands get screwed. The average music video costs about $100,000 (according to a recent article I read). This is a big wad of cash to work off.

In the past, this might have been true. Ten-fifteen years ago, the idea in the music industry was to get a band, market them, and make money over the long term. Almost no band is successful with their first album (or even their fourth), but the idea was to keep the band around, keep them on the road, and get them to the point where their back catalog would be profitable.
Not anymore. Since most record companies are now owned by other companies that have no knowledge of the music industry (alcohol manufacturers and the like), all they want to do is make money as fast as possible. First album's not a hit? Don't count on recording a second one. Back catalog? Who cares, they want their money NOW! Why do you think radio is trend happy? Why do most of the bands you hear sound the same? Why is it very rare to see a band still recording CDs five years after their first one came out? The modern recording business. And it sucks. I always like to say that imagine Rush was signed today (sure, you have to go along with the thinking that their music would be accepted by a major label if they came in off the streets right now, but just go with it for a moment). If they recorded their albums in the exact same order as they did in the past, under current company thinking they'd never get to "2112". And you'd have to think that the Rush back catalog is responsible for a lot of cash for whatever label they're signed to. But for the most part, back catalog and future sales don't matter as much as how much money can be squeezed out of the current "hot" act, until they're not hot any more.

Only if they can see immediate profits. Tour support has almost vanished for all bands except those with smash, huge hits. Which keeps a lot of bands from making as much money as they could. In the long term, tour support might generate more sales down the road. But today's companies don't want to wait that long. And only big labels provide tour support anyway. The record business sucks for the artist, for the most part. Somewhere there's a website where recording contracts are broken down to show how they really work and stuff. If I find it again, I'll post it. It's pretty interesting reading. It will make you wonder how any band manages to make any money in this business.

Reviewer: 5. Fatal Tragedy: Now comes the part of the album which I didn't like at first, but have learned to like now. Heavy guitars (you know what I mean by heavy: Like in 'Lie') and an ever repeating riff in 4/4. This gets (somehow) annoying when you are listening to the CD over headphones and really concentrate on the music. Then there is the chorus, which brings the unregular part of DT back (YOU ARE FUCKING AMAZING, MIKE!!!!), the scheme carries on and in the end the song gets a bit messy... but it's still good. <<
Eh? The ending riffarama fest of Fatal Tragedy is one of the greatest moments in recording history. I lost control of all bodily functions repeatedly, and had to change my pants eleven times.

Hmmm..it may not be just a coincidence afterall, I almost forgot that the last line of Metropolis 1 was "Love is the Dance of Eternity", and The Dance of Eternity is the next song after Home. They even capitalized "Dance of Eternity" in the lyrics in I&W. So is this the true place for part 1? In the middle of part 2? Can anyone tell me if they see this too, or have I just been listening to too much DT the past 2 days (is too much possible?)

he can't actually be Edward. The murder happened in 1928. If Edward was a senator back then, he'd be long dead. I guess I agree with the popular opinion, and that is that the hypnotist is the reincarnation of Edward and when he finds out what nicholas knows, the therapist (Edward) kills Nicholas because Nicholas knows the true story that Edward is the murderer. Nicholas is the only one who knows that, and so Edwrad kills him to keep him quiet. but how would nicholas know that the therapist is edward? he wouldnt, so why kill him? and if nicholas is the reincarnation of victoria, then how is that the thoughts of the two brothers are revealed? he would only know the thoughts of victoria. i guess thats all trivial and you have to look past something like that. mike said on portnoy.com that "youre gonna have to be a genius to figure the ending out" or something along those lines, so maybe none of us are even close.

Hey, Here's a bunch of random ideas in no particular order about the album. I haven't read the jams from 10/26 on so if I repeat someone else's sediments-sorry. -With the way they set the "program" and the images and words on this album, doesn't the name Dream Theater mean that much more now? -When I opened the CD cover and saw Metropolis Pt. 2, I was even more excited to hear the album -I love the old logo being back -My next tattoo will be the logo with my son's name written across the top & my daughter's name along the bottom. -I think this album has more double bass in it than any album I've ever heard -JL sounds great. He has improved a lot over the years -There was a lot of thought put into the booklet, lyrics in different fonts & the cast of characters. What an outstanding idea. -This album grows on ya. I'm on my 7th time through it & I like it more each time. -MP is a drum beast. What an impressive display of percussion. -I'm still not 100% on the story line but I love reading the thoughts running around out there. -Dance of Eternity is an outstanding instrumental piece. It could also be titled the Metropolis Part 1 Super Mega Mix. -Has anyone noticed how the final song on each of the last four album has a deep imbedded message? Very emotional as well. -To Mike & the guys-Thanks for the veil. It made this album a moving experience and extremely enjoyable. -I like the Scenes From a Live Memory tour idea but it is great that all these songs could stand alone if played live. -Has anyone noticed that lyrics on "Beyond This Life" are printed in the article in the paper on the inside cover of the album? What a kick ass idea. -How old is Victoria? She is often referred to as a "poor, young girl." Is she 8 or 15 or 20? Are the miracle & the sleeper the same age or are they older? -During the 8th minute of Home (my personal favorite) who is talking and what are they saying? There are some voices in the background. -Are we going to call this album SFAM or SFaM? -It is definitely a 12 out of 10. I love it. What a great job on the entire project. Very well done. I can't wait for the tour. Your guys are the kings of musicianship. You are an inspiration to us all. Thanks a bunch. You have changed the lives of many a jammer. Especially my own.

All I can say is WOW.
..well, that's really not true. I can say a LOT more than that. Let's start off with what I DON'T like about the album, since that will be a whole lot easier and take much less time. :)
1) The biggest disappointment of the new album is the little "player piano" bit in "TDoE." How could the band let that go? This is SERIOUS music and subject matter, and there is absolutely no room in it for a litle musical "joke" and yet that is precisely what we get. Yes, his techniques is fabulous, but for christ's sake...
2) The beginning of "One Last Time." Yeah, I know it's Jordan again, but the overplaying is just really obvious. This would be so much more effective if he would have just mellowed out and let the soudscape thin out (like the rest of the band does), but no. We get a highly emotional moment in the song ruined by a blazing flurry of notes from the Yngwie of the keyboard.
Other than that, I can't find anything I don't like about it. Even though I make the above two comments (and stand by them), I think Jordan's playing on this album is STELLAR. Simply amazing. He is obviously the keyboardist who belongs in this band (and I was an ARDENT Derek supporter). He uses the sampling capabilities of the K2600 expertly. This is the Dream Theater that I want. I can't believe what I am hearing. I didn't even completely observe the "Veil," but the album is so far beyond my expectations that it's incomprehensible.
I can't possibly write a full review. There's just too much to say, and so much of it cannot be expressed in words.
I have my thoughts on the plot. (I bet Mike is LOVING reading all the interpretations!) Personally, I don't believe that Nicholas is an old man. He could very well be a young man. I'm only 25 and I have LOTS of vinyl records. I don't think Nicholas recived the souls of BOTH Victoria and Julian - it says "*AN* old soul exchanged for a new..." I just can't decide which of the three of them was reincarnated as Nicholas.
hehehe: Nikki. :) I don't think that has anything to do with the plot - it's not any kind of tie-in or anything, but I just think it's a little nod to O:M. That's what I think the plot can be best summed up as: "Operation: Mindcrime" with a twist.

No, the accent is definitely Australian, though not someone still living there. More like an American/Australian, or an Australian living in the states for a long time. A South African accent is somewhat similar. ><

I noticed the same thing... Here's a passage from Lawrence's The Plumed Serpent:

It seems rather fitting considering the story of SFAM. Incidentally, I believe the main character of The Plumed Serpent is a young woman who is intriqued and captivated while at the same time repelled and disilliusioned by the qualities of a man she loves---perhaps parallelling Victoria and the dual natures of Miracle and the Sleeper?

First off, this CD rules. It's truly a fantastic effort. The guys should be proud of themselves. Well done! Secondly, on the back page of the booklet (the picture with the newspaper) there are three or four books. You can only read the title of one of them, the rest are out of focus. The title that you can read is a D.H. Lawrence novel, "The Plumed Serpent." Does this have any significance? The book was published in 1926, so maybe it's just a point of reference of the year the murders took place (1928). I just thought that it was strange that all the other titles were out of focus, but not "The Plumed Serpent." Has anyone read this book?
Again, this is a masterpiece and beyond my expectations! I'm so glad that I waited until the 26th to hear anything from SFaM. A wonderful "early" Christmas present. Thanks guys.
