Two words: Pink Floyd. Their debut in 1967 "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" was
pretty big (they had two top 20 singles). Then Barret went nuts, and the
band dropped off the mainstream markets (however they still sold a lot of
records, kinda like DT). Then in 73 they released Dark Side of the Moon and
became superstars. Darkside spent 741 weeks on the Billboard charts. How's
that for "making it big" It also helps that they're another prog band

Which probably means you should hear more, they're not totally about
screaming etc. There are lots of song, or lots of parts in songs too, that
Burton C Bell has great melody or whatever. But I can see how it would
ruin it for ya if you don't like rough vocals like that...since that is
their mainstay style. I for one totally dig it! I'm not just into prog

Way cool. But don't tell Brian, he'll only tell us it's just an anomoly,
and anything else is futile on our parts :-) Just kidding Brian, you've
made some good points, albeit repeatedly, but I think you're missing another
one that I think someone else (sorry, I'm horrible at remembering these
things) tried to make. Where did you first hear DT? IT DOESN'T MATTER
WHERE! (Sorry, just kidding, had a Rock flashback there) I heard them on
the radio back in 92 with Pull Me Under. And if it wasn't for that, I might
not have found them. And I'm sure there are many other fans that found them
on the radio. My point is that I don't think DT has reached every potential
fan yet. And if we can help (politely, mind you) get them some exposure,
and they find a few new fans, hell, even one new fan, that's way cool. And
nobody in the world can say when a new prog fan might be born, just like I
was back in 92... And I am not trying to convert the masses :-) There is
no right or wrong when it comes to tastes... I just say let people hear
them, and make up their own minds, like I did...

Profuse apologies to all for dragging this thread on... I expect I won't be
able to speak for the next few days, cuz I'm gonna be too busy
    listening!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    >Stratovarius (does the var syllable rhyme with "car" or "air")

Actually, I think that's mostly dependant on which country you're in. I
believe the original pronunciation (and common amongst more latin based
languages) would use the soft a sound as in "car" and the same soft a sound
for the Stra syllable. (Strah toe var ee us) Whereas us daffy english
speaking types come up with our own ways of saying things all the time and
I've heard it here more as the long a as in "air" and the short a sound for
the Stra syllable as in the word "had." (Stra toe vair ee us)

However, I'm sure you could show it to someone here in the US and they'd
swear it was: "Stray tah var ai oos" or something. We're all fucked up. :)

I think though that one of the most confounding names I've never bothered to

too). You know, the bass player? :)

Anyway, who wants to bet that tomorrow when 95% of the people start
cancelling their backorders of SFaM from CDNow, DT's rating falls off of the
Top 100 chart? They better not be backordering mine or I'm goona be pizzt!

Well, I got an email confirmation that cdnow had sent the cd I ordered along with SFAM, but they apparently ran out of cds in their "A" Wharehouse, which means it got stuck on backorder for me. I proceeded to cancel that order and go ahead with going to Best Buy tomorrow. I'll get it before I would have with cdnow as it is and I'll be happier.

Anybody else get their SFAM order put on hold like I did? That'll teach CDNOW not to order enough cds!! 8-)

I am a huge Fear Factory fan. I love this band. I have one gripe, however. On the last two regular releases - not remix albums - they released an expanded version of the album a couple of months after they released the regular version. The first time (w/Demanufacture) I simply gave the album to my brother and went to buy the re-release. However, they did it to us again with Obsolete. Now I love this band, but I'm getting frustrated at the idea that the fans who buy the album when it first comes out get screwed. I am no longer willing to... well, it's a lie that I'm not willing to buy the album again. I did it before, and I just bought a Japanese import of the Resurrection single which has three tracks from the re-release. I am not, however, going to buy the next album until six months after it comes out. Hopefully, I won't have to shell out twice what it's worth for the extras (which, in the case of Demanufacture, weren't even that good in the first place).

Hello all, I know I've posted something like this before. However, it didn't work out the first time I tried it for reasons beyond my (or anyone else's) control. So here I go.

I am auctioning off my copy of Mike Bahr's Dream Theater Subconscious. For those of you who weren't around when this was first released this is a CD compilation of old demos and live tracks. It contains an original version of A Change of Seasons, clocking in at 19:19 and substantially different than the version on the ACOS EP. Also features "Carry That Weight" Beatles cover, "Tears" Rush cover, and Tori Amos' "Winter" cover. Number 125 hand numbered and initialed by Mike Bahr - released on Prism Records. It is in mint condition. Very limited edition! There were only 500 of the original pressing made!

Thanks for your patience. I'd really like for this to go to someone who'll enjoy it more than I do.

I really liked this test. It reminded me of a psych project I did in college, where I played various styles of music for people and got their responses. It's where one of my all time favorite quotes about music came from, where a HS student said "I only like songs I know."

This particular statement probably does more than anything else to explain why most people listen to the music they do. But that's a subject for another message.

What I'd be curious to see someone try is to perform the same experiment, but use someone in the same peer group to introduce the DT (or whatever band you want to try) to the listener. Often times, siblings tend to really disagree with each other, and will turn down anything the other one likes just because they're related. For example, when I was a kid buying Led Zeppelin and Yes albums, my brother was listening to The Carpenters and other top 40 stuff. I wonder if someone else in the same peer group, especially if it's someone the other kids think is "cool", introduces DT (or another band) to them, if the results would be different?

As far as James voice goes, I'm not surprised that it was sort of a turn off. Simply because not only do you not hear anyone with a higher pitched voice on the radio, you rarely hear anyone singing on the radio anymore. They're either rapping, yelling, or growling (sometimes combinations of all of them at the same time), often not quite in tune with everything else. Actual singing might confuse people.

Okay, for the time being, the project name is "Second Nature" and the album title is "SMPTe"... but apparently that is subject to change... or not.

    How's that for a firm answer? ;o)

Just wanted to express my pleasure in that at a bonfire/party this weekend, I played some DT music, and caught the ears of two people there, who plan on grabbing the new album as soon as it comes out. And better yet, one of the people works at a music store and is planning on putting DT in regular rotation there ;) :) :) :)

I wanted to post this before I got the CD tomorrow. I don't want anyone including any band members to question my thoughts because of the euphoric effects of the new music. I don't think I'm letting any secret out at this late date by my next comments. We as Dream Theater fans owe the band our thanks and support. Mike and the guys didn't just answer our demands for Met 2 by giving us a 10-12 minute follow up, they dedicated the whole damn CD to us! They could have sat down and kicked out a CD with a dozen new unrelated songs that might have gotten decent air play, but they didn't. They listened to us and they gave us one of the best earliest Christmas presents I will probably ever get... a 70+ minute Met 2. I know of no other band at DTs level that would say F*** the air play, let's make a kick ass CD that OUR fans want! So Mr. Portnoy, as I sit here waiting for tomorrow to arrive. Thanks for the present that sits under the Christmas tree tonight, I'll probably not be able to sleep at all.

Well Al.. you can pick me up a copy. I spent my the last of my money (the usual amount I carry on me.. I still have my bank accounts and an Arizona ice tea bottle full of quarters) on a Star Wars Halloween costume. Damn. Maybe I can sit around and whine with the Indonesian jammers about not getting the album ;)
