Since I am relatively new in the whole prog (metal) music thing, I would like to have a few suggestions from people who know. Which groups are the best to begin with and what albums should I look for?
Don't tell me DT! I am a fan since I&W.

    What's your opinion about:

    Psychotic Waltz
    Fates Warning
    Yes
    Gentle Giant
    Eldrich

Do you know any Website where I can find information for the above groups (discography, biography, lyrics a.s.o.) and other groups too?

    Private mail would be appreciated.
    Thank you in advance.

Led Zeppelin are an example. They had a bona fide hit
with "Whole Lotta Love". They then dropped off the
chart (they released WLL in '69) and stayed off until
they released a single from their Houses Of The Holy
    album ("D'yer Mak'er") in 1973. I don't think Zep
fits most people's category of prog, but they never
had really marketable music so for this example they
work. Oh yeah, I think "D'yer Mak'er" was the only
hit single they had until 1978 or around there. In
between those the release of "Whole Lotta Love" and
HOTH albums, Zep released their lowest selling album
(Led Zeppelin III) and then their highest selling
album (Led Zeppelin IV) and I don't think any of the
songs got play immediatley upon release, so we won't
mention 'em. So anyway, by that reckoning, it looks
like they did it twice. It's not totally unheard of.

And if you're *really* stretching, one could list
Vanilla Ice (hey, that Korn-style CD of his got a
little bit of play in my area). Hope this helps.

Oh believe me, once you pop SFAM into your player, you have absolutely
no doubts about Jordan fitting in the band !!! Definitely best work
they have EVER put out...(HA, I know, I've been listening to it the

I don't speak Ukrainian myself, and the only Slavic language I feel at
home with is Russian, but my bet is Vee-'tah-lee Koo-'pree. Mind the
    accents.

Now, if I saw the name written down in the Cyrillic letters... The English
language is notorious for transcribing names and words written in Cyrillic
(that otherwise make perfect sense) into something that's hard to make out
even with a lot of practice under the belt. :-)

I just picked up "e" the other day. Great stuff! Kinda like a jazzier and
    funkier
LTE without guitar. (e is Hellborg and the Johanssen bros.)
Hellborg sure picks great guys to collaborate with. I also just got "Octave
    of
the Holy Innocents" which he recorded with Buckethead and Michael Shrieve.
A lot more minimal than "e" but still great.

I'm a bit behind on my 'jams, so I was just wondering if you've heard
anything about the Oz release date yet? So far I've been getting the
same response as you in every CD shop I've been into: *Checking

    Hi all

I picked up the new Dream Theater album on the way into
the office this morning. Good. Fucking Good. It has more
than compensated me for the disappointment I felt when
"Falling Into Infinity" was released. I won't review it.
Just one comment about the similarity between the track
"Home" and Tool's song "46 + 2" - it jumps out and grabs
you by the throat. I can now throw away my Viagra and
pleasure my girlfriend any time she's foolish enough to
    play this album.

Some ingrates are already saying they hope the band
won't play the new stuff back-to-back all the way
through - I can only hope they do. Albums like this
are meant to be heard (and played that way). I was
lucky enough to see Genesis perform "The Lamb Lies
Down On Broadway" in its entirety 3 times back in '74
and these shows were some of the best I've ever been
to in 27 years of going to concerts. The same applies
to the tour Pink Floyd did with "The Wall", as well as
to the Yes tour when "Tales From Topographic Oceans"
    was released.

The end of another year is slowly but surely
approaching, which means time for our yearly "album of
the year" poll. I'm offering to do this again, but this
year I'm suggesting 2 options for you to choose from.
It's a foregone conclusion that "Scenes From A Memory"
and "Liquid Tension Experiment 2" will take the first
2 positions, so I would suggest that you

    a) submit your top 5 albums excluding the 2 mentioned
    above, or

    b) submit your top 10 albums including the 2 mentioned
    above.

Let me know what you think. I'll then open the poll to
    run all through December.

    stay safe and happy listening
    Neil Gallop (neil.gallop@softwareag.com)

So what should we do here, wait until every person on the Jam gets the
album? What about the people waiting to see what others think about it?
What about people who's CDNow order shows up late - should we delay talk
about the album 'till these people all individually report that they've
obtained the CD? What about those who don't necessarily buy the album the
day it comes out? You know, I don't plan on getting the CD 'till next July,
so none of you sons of bitches better talk about the album until I get it.
I'll let you all know when you're allowed to review it - and you'd better
not do it before. I'll sick my cousin Joey on you if you do, you skanky
    bastards...

Dream Theater is an American band. This list is predominantly American.
The offical release date, according to Portnoy, is October 26, regardless of
where you're from. Live it, learn it, shut the hell up...

    Howdy Jammerz!!

I'm very excited to have purchased directly from Guy LeBlanc himself
(since we're in the same hometown: Ottawa, Canada) subVersia. For those =
    of
you who don't know, Guy LeBlanc is the keyboardist, vocalist, =
    songwriter,
mastermind etc... for the prog rock/fusion band, Nathan Mahl. =
    SubVersia is
his solo masterpiece recorded over the course of spring/summer with the =
    help
    of some very fine musicians.

On guitars: Jos=E9 Bergeron, Mark Sp=E9nard and Scott McGill (guitarist =
    for The
Hand Farm and formerly of Finneus Gauge)
    On Sax: Paul D=E9sagn=E9.

When I bought Clever use of Shadows (Mahl's latest album) I didn't
think they could surpass it but as Guy said himself, his solo album is =
    as
good if not better then Shadows. All rhythm and vocals are performed by =
    Guy
and Scott's playing on the tracks are really amazing (it will remind =
    you of
Finneus Gauge) especially on the epic track clocking at almost 30 =
    minutes,
    subVersia.

Nathan Mahl was the biggest surprise at NEARfest '99 according to
Ghostland.com. I have seen them live with The Hand Farm over the course =
    of
the summer and they played a song from their forthcoming double album =
    coming
out next year called: HERETIK. The song was called Carpe Diem and it =
    totally
blew me away. I for one can't wait to listen to their new album which =
    the
recording process should start in December Guy says.

            Check these guy's out @

    http://home.iSTAR.ca/~natmahl/

This album will stay in my cd player along with Scenes from a Memory
    coming out tomorrow!!!!!

Well, I can see where you're coming from, but I don't think they really fit
the bill. While you're right, WLL was their only top ten single (1969), all
those albums after that point were getting radio play, going platinum, and
they were playing sold-out arena shows. The reason they weren't on the
singles chart is simply because they only released six of them in their
career, and most of them "only" hit the teens or low 20s because most people
who liked the stuff already had the albums.

For the record, here's their charted songs, with peak position and month
they first showed up in the top 40:

Whole Lotta Love: 4, December 69
    Immigrant Song: 16, December 70
    Black Dog: 15, January 72
    D'yer Mak'er: 20, November 73
Trampled Under Foot: 38, May 75
Fool In The Rain: 21, January 80

    Have a look at this:

    http://www.towereurope.com/Detail.cfm?ID=893621&CFID=88027&CFTOKEN=33265040

Apparently, Dream Theater released an album in January this year entitled
"Hell Freezes Over", with the WDADU cover, and they also supported Elton
    John on his European tour.

I think Tower Records have been slightly misinformed. ;-)

Umm...would that be the band "Second Coming" or is that what they're naming the project...if so the name is already taken...and Second Coming is a BADASS band...especially if you like The Tea Party, definetly check them out.

Uh... no. They are from Germany. But the name, Vanden Plas, is indeed supposed to be Dutch. No Jaguar. ;-)

Pronounciation? It's something like fun-dan-plus. Not exactly, but you'd get away with it ;-)

I think US fans are probably a little lucky that ANY radio over there plays DT; over here, they don't even put out singles - what would be the point? Who the hell would play it? Also, I haven't heard the edit of Home, and I'm told that DT did the edit. I don't care; I hate radio edits, whoever did them. EDIT - the term means "To cut out various parts of the whole". I remember the edits of previous DT songs, and I hate every one of them - or what's left of them. Particularly with DT stuff, IT DOESN'T WORK!!

    > >And while we're on re-makes, does anyone else think > >that Stevie Ray Vaughan's re-make of Hendrix's "Little > >Wing" was WAY better than Hendrix's version? Vaughan's > >style is so much more refined, and his tone is > >infinately better than Hendrix, imho. I like the Corrs' version :) (No, really!)

    >I do... Actually, I do think Steve, as a guitarist, was much >better than Hendrix... No, I don't discuss Hendrix's >importance to guitar history, that can't be argued... I hear this argument the whole time, that Hendrix was the greatest guitarist ever, and it's bullshit. SRV was a hell of a lot better; as indeed was Jimmy Page, as indeed is John Petrucci. Hendrix was the best when he was around, and yes, was the most influential guitarist ever, but to say that no-one's played better since 1971 is bull. That's like saying that no-one's made a better album than Sgt Pepper (which is said all the time, but repetition doesn't make a fact!), when there's been several that have surpassed it.

    >14) Mike confirmed that DT was signed to a seven-album deal, starting >with >I&W, and commented that the label does notice the worldwide >sales when >each new album is approved. Just out of interest, does anyone want to take a guess at how many records DT have sold internationally, from WDADU through to FII, as of RIGHT NOW? I'd be interested if anyone knows.

Also, I'm sure Mike's wrong about this one, unless the head of Elektra is a massive DT fan or something. Otherwise, they've found babylon, the undiscovered country, the place where old bands and Asia go to die...A Record company that lets you sell diddly-squat and still keeps you one! :)

I have some good news for those of you in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Cheapo Records on Snelling Ave. in St. Paul is keeping the doors open until 12:30 AM. At 12:01 AM SFaM will be on sale! I most certainly will be there with a "Fist Full of Dollars." :) Other Cheapo stores may also be open late tonight. Woo Hoo!!!

(Excepting Shania Twain, who seems obsessed with staying in a male register. "Man! I feel like a woman!"? Funny, you neither look nor sound like one...) I mean, I agree with you entirely, but it's such bullshit. Sometimes I dispair of people - they don't like it because the singer's too high? I mean, what the fuck does that mean? I love JLB and Jon Anderson...I keep playing stuff in my head and transposing JLB/JA over the top instead of the normal singer. Sounds ace. Try it.

For Jason and anyone else that wants to tune in, you can heard 98Rock worldwide over the net. Just go to their website http://www.98online.com and go to the tune in link.

One of the good things is that over the net feed there is no 7-sec delay, so you hear EVERYthing that happens on air during their morning show. Screw the FCC.
