Uh... For as long as I can remember, dreamtheater.com has been
owned by the people who are using it now (Dream Theater Inc.).

I do... Actually, I do think Steve, as a guitarist, was much
better than Hendrix... No, I don't discuss Hendrix's
importance to guitar history, that can't be argued...
I discuss this with an uncle of mine who grew up listening
to Hendrix all the time, and he still can't conceive I think
Steve is better...
And I do agree his style fit "Little Wing" much better than
Hendrix's... On the tone department, however, you have to
remember that Hendrix's version was recorded 17 years
earlier, and I'm no tone expert, but sound tecnology
must've improved a lot during that time... And, after all,
it was Jimi who came up with the original stuff... :-)

I think just one motive repeated three or four times is not enough to
be called a theme. Also, simply quoting past material isn't thematic,
either. Quoting past material should illicit a memory of that past
material for a reason. Themes are normally played and expanded upon
throughout a piece, not just repeated two or three times, so maybe you
people mis-took what I meant when I said themes. I'm talking musically
theoretically speaking, which these men are gifted at, by the way, so I'd
like to see a bit more coherence. Be well.

It almost seems sacreligious to speak of anything BUT SfaM, but I still
haven't heard anything from the album, so nothing to say about that.
VERRRRY high recommendations, though, go to the California Guitar Trio,
who I was lucky enough to see here in Boulder Friday night. Three
acoustic guitarists, all former students of Robert Fripp (of King
Crimson), and they just ooze talent. The show features their own
material, plus arrangements of lots of eclectic well-known stuff,
including Beethoven's Ode to Joy and Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody.
As an added bonus, they're joined on some of the shows of the tour by Tony
Levin on fretless and stick, and offer a cover of the amazing Crimson
instrumental Discipline during the show.
So... if you get a chance... check these guys out. I can't imagine anyone
being disappointed.

Hi all.
Jason Skewes. Former DT FAQ maintainer, Former Superior CD pusher :-),
Long-Time Ytsejammer - Full-Time Lurker. It's probably been years since I
posted last. I've been on the 'jam since about 1 month after it started. I
was here when Mike Bahr actually had a GOOD reputation. :-) It's been good
to see Burstin and a few other long-timers post. As the new release
approaches and I see the goings-on lately, I felt like addressing a few
things.
First - am I the only one who's reading these Derek Sherinian interviews and
thinking - 'Man, what's his problem..?'. I mean, I realize he got booted
out the band, but for him to sit there and say that 'I was hardly the weak
link in that band'. Come on. One listen to the new CD will set that
straight. Now - according to Derek - all progressive rock has turned into
'Spinal Tap'. Geez - I didn't know that if you wrote lyrics that were a
little more thought-inspiring than chasing women and drinking beer - that
you were taking yourself too seriously. I'd venture to say that your normal
prog-rock fan is a little more intelligent than the norm - therefore it's
interesting to actually follow the lyrics and discuss them much like someone
would a book. Spinal Tap? Now if the new DT stage show has each member
emerging from a cocoon...
Yes, I was a big Kevin Moore fan - and actually I still am. His leaving DT
seemed to come at a pretty crappy time and let's face it, there aren't too
many keyboardists out there that could have just jumped in there. (Although
I would have like to have heard a certain ex-Malmsteen keyboardist have a
run at it.) I think the band did the best they could, but I was honestly
disappointed with the Derek years.
Second - I've had a promo copy of the new one for a few weeks thanks to a
good connection (YES - I still ordered a copy anyway to support the band!)
and I have to say that DT is back where they belong. I gotta admit - the
LTE albums weren't a big deal to me. Even as a guitar player - they just
didn't do it for me - I felt they lacked emotion and for the improv albums
that they are - that's probably to be expected. I had my concerns about the
new album. But this one is something that we fans ought to cherish. There
aren't many bands out there that listen to their fans like this band does
and it shows in this album. And it also helps that Mike is probably the
biggest fan of all. In my opinion, this album is a gift to all of us who
have been here and seem to keep longing for the 'good 'ole days'. Jordan's
contribution is beyond explanation. I don't want to overhype this thing,
but you'll all know soon enough.
Third - The post that Jens just made cracked me up. I glad he's around
here. I just can't believe that he actually stays through all the noise
that's normally here... :-)
I want to talk pro's and con's of the 'veil' - but I won't do that before
the album's out.

This would be 98 Rock. Used to be better, but still the best radio station
in the area. (DC/Balt) Does play lots of Rush and played SB "Skin" as a
smash or trash. Did promote DT back in the Awake days as well. Best chance
of all stations. Can't listen to it from here, tho.. :^(

I could be wrong again, but I used to pronounce it like that (silent S),
but then somebody I knew was pronouncing it with sorta a hard C sound at
the end. If anybody is a auto enthusiast maybe they can clear this up?
(the band is named after the Jaguar Vanden Plas).

I'd like to take that a step further and say that all
SRV covers of Hendri songs are much better than the
original. I personally couldn't stand to listen to
Hendrix's version when SRV's blew it right out of the
water. The few times I actually listen to the Hendrix
version these days, I listen to the lyrics. I've
always thought that Hendrix was a way overrated
player. Death has a way of doing that to people.

It's a 10-string stringed instrument that is played with both hands tapping
on the fretboard. Commonly referred to as simple a "stick" but technically
called the "Chapman Stick."
It's a sweet instrument. I'd like to try playing one someday. :)

Here's the history of touchstyle: http://www.bunker-guitars.com/history.html ]From what I know, Jimmie Webster was the first, but quite a few have used it between his era and Eddie Van Halen on Van Halen I. Of course, if you listen to Emmett Chapman of Stick Enterprises, he claims to have invented the technique used by, say, John Myung, specifically in the fact that the fingers are held parallel to the fretboard, and EVH played in the normal fashion but with his right hand at a 90 degree angle to the board and his left hand. If you really want to get serious about tapping almost exclusively, you can put a strap lock on the lower horn of your guitar and another one in the "dip" in the body, which will force the neck to swing up between 45 and 60 degrees. If you've seen King Crimson's Trey Gunn playing his Warr Guitar, you'd understand. It's not upright like the Stick and it's not horizontal like a guitar.

Sorry about that. At work I have to use the stupid WebMail interface instead of Outlook Express. OE seems to put automatic line feeds into messages, while the webmail doesn't. Not exactly natural for me to hit return at the end of a line.

*SPOILER*SPOILER*SPOILER*SPOILER*SPOILER A few tidbits from the interview; 1) Both Finger's (the DJ)and Mike's daughters love to listen to "Home". 2) Mike and his driver ran out of gas 5 minutes from the station! (hehe...) 3) The band said "F'-it" when writing the CD in terms of edit/radio airplay. They also had full artistic control over the album. "Home" was the first choice by the band for a single, and the they did the editing themselves. 4) Because Fingers had played both the edit and full-length versions if "Home", Mike chose the track "Fatal Tragedy" to be played. 5) Many of the FII demos WILL be released on the DTIFC Christmas CD!! (TAMP confirmed!) 6) The CD was recorded with all the members playing at the same time. 7) Mike compared the concept to "Pulp Fiction", with the time-jumping angle. 8) The lyrics are in a different font for different time frames/characters. 9) SFAM was produced by MP/JP, with them writing the majority of the lyrics. 10) Fingers then played "Regression" and "Overture 1928". the airplay was continued with "Strange DejaVu" (that's 1/3 of the CD, people) 11) Mike then joked about the vail, and said that the new songs are probably on the 'net by now (not by me, but I am reporting.. ) 12) Mike also helped report "Scrap Metal", the local metal news section, using a great "radio voice". He was sure to plug SFAM ever time he read a news report. (btw- Metallica is taking a year off, to which Mike commented, "Thank God!"). 13) Mike commented on the worldwide acceptance of DT worldwide, and the US hardcore fans. (Yeah, baby, Yeah!) 14) Mike confirmed that DT was signed to a seven-album deal, starting with I&W, and commented that the label does notice the worldwide sales when each new album is approved. 15) Mike's and Finger's daughters are both named Melody! (small world) 16) Mike commented on the edit of "Home". The orgasm (in the right speaker) coinsides with a gambling scene (in the left speaker). These two scenes represent the focus of each of the brothers. The album version of "Home" was played next. 17) The present day character is the reincarnation of Victoria, brought out by hypnotism. 18) Mike signed Fingers CD, "To Melody's daddy, from Melody's daddy". 19) Mike is going to deliver a CD copy of "Oh Holy Night" for Fingers' "KISSmas" christmas show. The copy that Fingers' plays is on reel-to-reel, and is in danger to burning up. 20) For the upcoming European tour, the band WILL NOT be playing SFAM in full, as it will be Jordan's first full tour with the band. They will start playing the full album at the start of the new year. *21) For the first time, Mike confirmed that there WAS some tension in the band, with them not knowing if they wanted to continue after FII. The different side projects, keyboardist change, and full control of this album "reinvigorated" the band. 22) Mike confirmed the name of his new side project as "Second Coming". 23) Fingers' played "Beyond This Life" to close the show. Mike describes this as "Green Day meets Radiohead meets Edgar Winter" (tongue planted in cheek, I believe) ..that's it, people. Less then 22 hours until the U.S. release of "Scenes ]From A Memory"!

Do you realize that Korn spent something like 9 years as an underground band, and it's efforts exactly like this one, but with more tact, that helped launch them? They went gold or platinum with NO label support (read this in an article about them some time ago). It CAN work in today's climate. Screw anyone who wants to say that reality won't allow a fan to have an impact!
I want to move to Europe. :)

Thing is, though, that Korn (and Pantera is a similar example) got no radio play, so it wasn't an effort to get them on the radio that did it. Grassroots efforts *can* work once in a while, but it's based on word of mouth, getting people out for shows, things like that. At least that's what I would think. Who knows how it works exactly.
I wonder, also (pure speculation here), if this has ever worked with a band like DT whose music is seen by many in the "mainstream" as dated. Korn (as much as I dislike their music) was offering something which at the time (say five years ago, when they were just starting to break) was a pretty new product, or at least one people hadn't really heard before, so it was easier for people to get excited about and think it might work on a bigger level.
If you look at history, I would suspect that this kind of grassroots effort works sometimes with up and comers, but doesn't with a band like DT. Someone who wants to make me wrong (I'm sure there are a lot of you ;)), try and come up with bands who had their "breakthrough" hit, then a few lean albums (in terms of mainstream/commercial success), and then finally got big (at least relatively speaking, not necessarily platinum-selling big). I think it would be an interesting thing to look at.
