blah, blah, blah...start backing up your accusations. privately, preferably.
but of course you won't do it privately, because as you illustrate here...
> Brian, you obviously have an axe to grind, and I want no part of it. If you

.this is about having a big dick for you. Nothing makes your case like
tossing around vague accusations and ending with a physical threat. Way to
go.
And no, I'm not going to say anything else about this publicly, but I can't
let something this overtly threatening go unchecked.

If you listen carefully, severall parts and themes are in fact going through the album !
Themes and melodies in track 2 & 3 are similar.
Main piano melody in track 4 and 7 are similar.
In track 10 you can hear a compelete section from track 2.
In track 12 you can hear the main melody and verse from track 10 and a theme from track 2.

They've wrote and recorded LTE2 in October & November 98 and SFAM from February
until June 99. It's only 3-4 months and not even a year !
You have to listen the whole album at least 5 times before write a review.

Hola se=F1ores,
By now I'm twiddling my thumbs and lounging in a comfy La-Z Boy(tm)
with a case of Dr. Pepper... and staring idly through my programming
assignments. ;-) Okay, so I'm typing at my computer, trying in vain to
repress the growing jealousy at every overseas report of how awesome the
new DT is. Well, I know it's awesome; I've heard quite a few clips, but
need you rub it in more?! ;-) "Your Jedi mind tricks do not work on
me!"
Just a random question I'd like to throw out to the DT community: how
many stories are comprised in the DT discography? By stories, I mean
multiple songs that comprise a whole unit, so songs like Metropolis Part
I do not count. ;-) I've been turning this thing over for a few hours
and can't seem to settle on a number; a lot of these songs could
possibly continue something from a previous album.
Oh, and the new Marillion is somewhat disappointing upon first listen.=20
I'm sure I'll find something to make me love it soon, however. Even
_The God Thing_ took a while to grow on me.

( 936686510 ) To the Band: Last night for the first time I heard "home" on the radio blasting through my headphones. I can not begin to tell you what it is like to be a Dream Theater Fan. Your music is so incredibly intense that I had goose bumps running down my back. I turned into a kid again and had to run around at work and tell everyone to turn their radios on! I have been a fan since I&W and I've see you in concert 6 times. Your music is full of passion and brings its listeners into another world. On Tuesday I will be picking up the new album, sitting back and letting it all soak in. Thank you for sharing your musical genius and your devotion to your fans who consider your music to be a very important part of their lives. See you on tour!!! --David Landis

Fear Factory is one of my favorite bands. The music, as has been pointed out, isn't THAT interseting when you compare it to prog - its more rhythmic, not as much melody. but i like that :) i love the drumming, especially on Demanufacture. that cd is a double bass drummer's wet dream :) my favorite part about FF has to be the vocals though - i love how Burton C. Bell perfectly balances the heavy growling type singing with the melodic, clean singing. its awesome to see him do it live. my favorite FF songs have to be Resureccion/Timelessness at the end of Obsolete (which is in turn my favorite FF cd :). in Resurrection, the music is heavy but Burton Bell sings only with his clean melodic voice, and then in Timelessness, the music becomes soft melodic synth type stuff and he again is singing only with his clean voice. that kicks fuckin ass :) when i saw em live, i was praying that they would close the show with those two songs, and they sort of did - they played resurrection, then played a tape of Timelessness as the lights came on and everyone left. anyways, they are good :) not sure what they've got planned that could possibly beat Obsolete, but knowing them, it will likely kick ass :) sorry this was so long, but if you got this far, then you probably actually found it intersting for some reason, so i dont need to be apologizing to you :) moo.

While we're on Disco, the Spin Doctors have the most hilarious re-make of "That's The Way I Like It" by KC and the Sunshine Band.
And while we're on re-makes, does anyone else think that Stevie Ray Vaughan's re-make of Hendrix's "Little Wing" was WAY better than Hendrix's version? Vaughan's style is so much more refined, and his tone is infinately better than Hendrix, imho.

Ok... got a bunch of subjectx to touch on...
1. Ticketmaster is selling tickets for a December 10th Dream Theater show at Toad's Place. I placed my order immediatly after I read this on Bostonjam. Saw no mention of it here... When are the other December dates going to be posted?
2. Another DT convert. Well, so the other day, my roomate's drummer was over, who is a DT & LTE fan, so I asked if he wanted to hear the new CD... well, needless to say, the answer was yes... So, while playing it, my roomate also took a listen (he likes similar music)... He never was really into them before, but, he will be joining the large group of us at the Toad's Place show, and will be buying SFaM when it comes out... Score another DT convert for me... :) (think I also have gotten a new Spock's Beard fan as well). Still trying to work on some more converts... gotta work on the one Rush fan I know out at work, and work some more on some of my friends... managed to get one of my friend's girlfriend to buy Dead Winter Dead... need some more plays of SFaM in the car...
3. The radio thing... Well, as my previous topic states, I personally try to get as many DT fans out of hte people that I know, and would love to get more people to listen to DT... I agree that it is great if we can get some radio play for them by makinmg request... IO think that the only way to do it is being civil... tell them a friend in some other city heard the song, and you wanted to have a listen as well... just make it a request and a request alone...
4. Listening to new CDs.. Well, this one deals with my approach to listening to new CDs, especially new prog... Back in '92 when I first heard I&W after some friends told me to check it out, it took me quite a few listens to get into the CD, but I gave it the oppertunity, and DT has long since become my favorite band (replacing Van Halen). It also took me a few listens to get into Parallels... Over time, as my listening has become more and more tuned towards the intricacies of prog, it has taken me fewre and fewer listens to get into new CDs.. . at this point, it took me exactly 1 listen to instantly love SFaM... And about a dozen ro so for it to replace I&W as my favorite CD... Now, I think that there will be some who follow on my patterns, but I think that people need to give the new CD at least a few listens before making up their minds about SFaM... just think how many times it took to really get into your first DT CD... DT is a band that makes you "work" to get into their music... part of the reason why they will have a hard time with radio play in general...
5. Radio in general... Well, here is a question for you, whifch I believe Amanda really mentioned first... How many of you really listen to the radio these days? I don't... I keep on getting these calls from pople doing surveys about what radio station I listen to... the get upset when I tell them none, because they all suck... Let's hope that more internet radio, such as HardRadio and even better ProgRadio (www.progradio.net) start to take off, and try to remove even more of the record company dominance...
6. SFaM still kicks so much ass...
7. thats it.. thanks for listening to my ranting...

As for Tiles, the disc gets better after each listen. This disc is getting surprisingly good!

>< I also wish that they would keep some common themes constantly going through the entire album ><
There are reaccuring themes all over the place on this album, and I'm not talking about musical and lyrical references to M1. I mean lyrics and riffs from this new album which are repeated later on, albeit subtely. That's the whole point of the album, I thought. Deja vu.

>< The sunday newspaper Best Buy flier had DT listed in the new cds coming out on Tuesday. Of course Alice and Chains, STP, etc got an album picture while DT just gets listed... Getting mentioned though is big. ><
LOL. I was gonna mention that, too. I couldn't believe it. DT's new album is in a Best Buy ad! They sold out!
>< Just wondering what you guys thought of Fear Factory. Kind of a silly post but i'd like to see how many people don't only listen to prog. ><
I have Demanufacture. Good music, vox are unbearable (but better than death metal). I like how they use those choir-like backing vocals (eg: the chorus to Self-Bias Resistor, which is awesome). A Therapy For Pain is another great song on that album. The drummer is one of the fastest double bass players I've ever herad, but his playing is pretty one-dimensional. They're easily one of the best speed/thrash bands out there with those type of vocals.
As for other non-prog, I'm sure just about everyone on this list listens to non-prog music too. At least I hope so. I'd hate to think some people are confining themselves to one genre.

here's two tough ones. How do you pronounce "Therion?" And an even harder one: "Vitalij Kuprij"?

I thought that s was silent ;)
I'm guessing Therion is theer-ee-on (theer rhymes with fear), and Vitalij Kuprij might be vee-tahl-eesh koo-preesh, extrapolating the pronunciation of baba ghannouj (sp?) :P

[ptacek] > I believe it's the newest issue of Mix, in which they state that Digital is > a bad format for archiving, and they point out two very interesting things.
I worry about CDR (not CD) degradation, and the DAT / helical scan tape problem as well. If not analog, I have a feeling magneto-optical may be the answer. I hear it is very durable technology. They make something like gigabyte-sized cartridges...
[al @ switchcraft] > I have the Mk IV, it's the newest of the A77 series. Mine has the professional > studio Dolby option installed.
The Swiss know their shit when it comes to precision machinery. We have a Revox G36 (from late 1950s) that still runs very well and sounds completely clear. And my brother and a friend own a 1" 8 track A80!! But of course we don't use it much.. :)
[mats rydstrom] > I've got an album with Jonas Hellborg, monster-shredder Shawn Lane and Jeff > Sipe called Temporal Analogues of Paradise, or something like that. > Enjoyable stuff - a live recording featuring two 30 minute improvs.
I just saw Jonas in Paris the other day. He just made a new CD now called 'Zen House'. It's all-acoustic, and pretty mellow. But good. Also working on material he has recorded with Zakir Hussein in India and some guy called Bob Moses... that plays drums with twigs he picks himself in the woods..

Yes, Anders is in HF now! They're not doing anyting right now though. I don't think Shawn ever did a lot of heroin. I also heard he cleaned up his act quite a lot!
[someone] >>Would anyone like to guess the frequency at which a digital sample would >>have to be taken in order to compete with the natural physical resolution >>of analogue tape? Hundreds of kHz? MHz? GHz?
This depends on the tape speed, of course. If we assume that the tape is moving at 99% of the speed of light.... and that the particles are all the width of a proton.. the bandwidth will be appx 3.14 bazillion THz.
I'd say "around 45 kHz" would work to compete with a good analog _player_ that reproduces up to 20 kHz. Analog tape may have very high intrinsic bandwidth, but the reality of tape heads and practical linear tape speeds ruins everything. It's very difficult to make the tape head gap small, and also the gain goes down with gap size IIRC. In the good old days of analog, 20 kHz was very often chosen by the eggheads of the time as a good compromise aiming point, for some "very odd" reason. I wonder why? ;)
[ptacek again] > and the process of playback uses an electromagnet to read the tape (whether > by measuring flux or reluctance, I can't recall, but I can summon data to > back it up if need be)
'Electromagnet' only in the reverse sense. I think it's 'flux density' (flux per area)? I think 'flux' is the (imagined) field strength at a mathematical point..
> This process degrades the integrity of the tape's > signal, because as flux is run through the tape, minute parts of the tape > move, become magnetized, shift, etc.
No, not theoretically.. the total flux for the track though the head changes only because the tape is moving -- the derivative of the flux turns up as output voltage. BTW think a second about what this means for signals that are 10 octaves apart!!! D sin (20000t) = 20000 cos (20000t). D sin (20t) = 20 cos (20t).. fortunately this intrinsic 30 dB lopsidedness is lopsided in a way that reduces noise in the range where the human ear hears it best. (There's that pesky human ear again being considered when making an audio chain! What's with these fucking engineers!? Don't they know we can hear sawtooth wave harmonics up to 500 MHz!?) It also explains why tape saturation is easier to get with LF material. (Hm, I think that's how it went)
In practice, of course, the information gets destroyed. Doesn't it always?? Aren't we all just molecular pawns, ripples in the endless void, waiting for the heat death of the Universe? :) The head gets magnetized and erases the tape.. dirt end up on the surface.. the tape gets hot.. the oxide rubs off.. the plastic stretches..
> What I agree with is that tape is a more accurate representation of > reality, in a sense. Analog tape is best described as a volume knob.
A noisy, nonlinear volume knob with a huge dead spot in the middle, that only reacts to the rate of change with which you turn it...
The 'dead spot' is why tape bias is needed. Kludge!!
> You can > have degrees of on and off, unlike on digital samples. No matter what your > sample rate, a sample can only be on or off, like a power switch.
Nothing in the world is infinitely small. ISTR there is "quantization noise" intruduced in analog tape -- I cant remember whether this is due to domain boundaries moving across the crystal lattice, or just domains "reorienting" (I don't think they actually physically move)
Most "analog" systems are a kludge on top of a patch inside a compromise, just like digital. But with much different trade-offs. Don't forget, they were made up by the same old bunch of egghead engineers using what was then the state of the art -- not by some 'magicians' from 20 years ago.
Ahhh. Analog. All the noise, normal distorsion, IM distorsion, HF roll-off, fading, print-through, crosstalk, reliability and warmth that you need and love!
Of course there's also something to be said for digital: perfect copies, simple backups, error recovery, automatic crossfades when you punch in and out without a glitch, mind-boggling signal-to-noise ratio, crystal clear treble, transparent bass... CD's that don't wear out..
Anyone that wants to partake in more hot air than I can ever deliver pro and con these issues could perhaps try deja.com ssearches for:
sawtooth ~g rec.audio.pro 20k ~g rec.audio.pro
I don't read r.a.p anymore, but there's usually LOTS of useless emotions!!
Doesn't mean I don't get a twinge of nostalgia looking at an old Studer A80. I get those looking at an old rotary phone or ASR30 teletype as well!! But I still don't refuse to use a phone with buttons, and I won't chuck out the laserjet -- unless of course there's a nuclear war and an EMP fries it, and all digital multitrack gear.
It's sad but true, if you want to make an omelette you have to break some eggs. If you make music now, it WILL be finally presented as a 44k/16bit stereo stream, at the MOST. This is the deal you get presently.
There's a lot of talk of "improving on 44/16." What will consumers say when confronted with the choices: one hour recording time at 44/16, or 20 minutes at 96/24? Will the audible difference be worth paying three times more for recording media? Will the market for 96/24 be big enough that a lot of records will be remastered?
If I take a 44/16 CD and copy it to 96/24, what I'll get is of course... 44/16.
Of course I'm all for choices, like I said -- as long as it's not an industry hoax to make "enhanced 96/24 CD reissues"!!
Making music is a nonlinear and noisy process. Quantification is largely meaningless. Auditory perception is a nonlinear and noisy process. Mind is a nonlinear and noisy process. Discussing, quantifying, analyzing may not make much sense. But a voltage transmission chain is a stupid, simple mechanism. Quantification makes a lot of sense, for eggheads then and for eggheads now. And "digital" is more linear and less noisy than "analog". Linear and noiseless may or may not be your cup of pee.
I'm rambling again.. it's this fucking finnish coffee. :)

I always tought the lethal level was 160-170 dB.
I wonder what a nuclear explosion at ground zero is in dB?? Does anyone know what air pressures are achieved?
[korgx3] > Actually, I watched a thing on 20/20 last year, and they showed that it is > common for many radio stations (especially the more popular metropolitan > ones) to accept "payola" in order to play songs. Although it is illegal to
I'm SHOCKED!!! :)
> DT? On the radio? Hmmm? Pull Me Under on MTV? Do you think that if DT > hadn't been on the radio or MTV you would ever have been introduced to them? > For some, maybe likely, but others no, probably not.
I always thought of MTV as being _the_ thing that broke them. VH1 would not be a bad target presently. But presumably the label has staff that's on the case!? (Can't see VH1 from where I am so I don't know if any video is on..)
By the way, if anyone wants to help promote the record, it may not be a good idea to insult radio/tv/network staff.. just a thought. <:o)
I guess it's out... like today or something?! Well, here's wishing it luck!!
Of course I've heard it already, no fucking way I'd wait. :) I like it a lot, and more with each listen as well. It's certaninly a remarkable CD, and I have a feeling it will do quite nicely!
