I love _Awake_. It's probably my fav DT album to date, primarily because
of Kevin's playing on it. It's more subtle and behind the scenes, but it
makes you dig harder to find it. Awake was an album that grew on me with
every listen. There's so much on that album (especially stuff that Kevin
did) that was sort of like a hidden treasure. It didn't pop out at you at
first like his flashier playing on IAW...
Anyway, as for the whole keyboardist/Kevin thing. I'm actually glad that
he left. His Chroma Key stuff is some of the best stuff out there, period,
IMO. I've enjoyed the Chroma Key stuff far more than any DT stuff...
though DT stuff is cool, too. No flames, just my opinion. :)

Ok, since I feel bad for not being on that list I volunteer
to compose this text file and add emails to it if people
send them to me. But....I just need to know about the
format. It's just email address, then one comma, one space,
then next address right? Or, semicolon? I don't really
know. So if someone would enlighten me, I'd be more than
willing to do it.
Also, someone posted about what type of emails should be
sent to these places and hit my feelings exactly. Guys, no
long drawn out "play my band's music cause they're good and
your stuff sucks" type things. Just a simple "hey, I've
heard this song and it rocks, can you play it please?" gets
the point across quickly and doesn't insult their program
director. But, that's all just my opinion.
So yes, please someone tell me the proper format, then I'll
compile everything and once I'm done, I'll post again
letting you know I'm done and how you can obtain a copy.
Chances are I'll upload it someplace and I'll have it
available as an email attachment. (Oh, for right now, I'm
just grabbing all the email addresses from off of UACM - if
that's ok Mark - so if you have other addresses, please send
them to me) Thanks!
Scott.

Hey Ytsejammers,
I wish I was lucky enough to live in a place where I could hear the new DT
single. Here in New Orleans, the only station that would possibly play it
has become an all classic rock station. Now we have two classic rock
stations, and one that plays pretty much alterna-crap and would never play
DT. The best chance of hearing it would be on Tulane's station, but it is
"too commercial" for them. So, I think great bands like DT often fall
through the cracks of the music industry, in that they don't get enough
commercial attention, yet they are too commercial for indie-rock stations
like our college station here. Good thing is that my favorite music
retailer here will be stocking several copies of the new CD! So I will
wait patiently until the 26th, although it would make me feel really good
to hear DT on the radio. Congratulations to everyone who has gotten DT
some desperately needed airplay, maybe if more people heard the music they
would come to appreciate DT also.
Later,
Kevin

Hi there!
I just kind of wanted to introduce myself, since this is my first mail to the list. I've kind of lurked around to and fro, but I thought it was time to come out of the shadows...:) I'm 18, I live in the south of Sweden and I've been listening to DT for 4 years. Enough about me.
I also have two questions... I'm obviously going to buy Q2K (it is a Queensryche album after all), but the question is how fast? I love the classic albums, and I like Empire and Promised Land. I'd rather forget HITNF though. So, if the new CD is as good as Empire or Promised Land (or even better), I'll buy it as soon as possible. Otherwise it can wait.
The second question is short: Which Anathema CD should I buy first? A song which has really caught my ears is "Fragile Dreams" (from Alternative 4 I believe...).
Private e-mails are welcome.
Erik Who is currently waiting for SFAM, Conception: Flow and Vauxdvihl: TDL. I believe I'll be in prog-heaven soon:)

Good news - it really bugged me having to order 'Once in a livetime' specially - though I never had any problem picking up the earlier releases.
>Anyway whilst I was in there I picked up the new Marillion album, >Marillion.com and instead of tearing your hair out in anticipation any >European DT fans should get hold of a copy ASAP as it absolutely >rocks, in my opinion of course.
Absolutely rocks?????? Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat!! You must be kidding! Its the dullest disk I've bought this year (though parts of 'Day For Night' run it close). The last track 'House' should be renamed 'lounge music' or something. Its a complete snoreathon.
>Tracks such as Deserve and Built In Bastard >Radar aren't a million miles away from DT and for an all out prog assault >then Interior Lulu lasts a hefty 15 minutes and combines some of the >weirdest effects with one of the heaviest keyboard solos in history.
The snippets on The Web Christmas disk and the website promised that these should be cool, but aside from parts of "Interior Lulu', its been a complete disappointment. I sincerely hope that SFAM doesn't sound anything like Marillion.Com. With so many great gigs coming up in November, no need to waste another #12 on Marillion.

> From: Jay Omega <jomega@legarto.minn.net> > Subject: Re: Analog vs digital
It's interesting that you bring this up, because I almost forgot that I received information that tells me I was wrong to back down against Al a while back. According to my recording tech professor, who has studied the physics involved in analog recording, record, erase, and playback heads ARE magnets, unlike what Al insisted. They aren't your typical refrigerator stock, but are instead electromagnets (Al granted this where it regards record heads). Degaussing, is used to remove residual flux that interferes with the head's accuracy, but when it is functioning, a tape head IS a magnet, as is the tape itself. The process of recording magnetizes a tape, and the process of playback uses an electromagnet to read the tape (whether by measuring flux or reluctance, I can't recall, but I can summon data to back it up if need be) This process degrades the integrity of the tape's signal, because as flux is run through the tape, minute parts of the tape move, become magnetized, shift, etc. None of this has anything to do with what sounds better: MP3 or Cassette.
What I agree with is that tape is a more accurate representation of reality, in a sense. Analog tape is best described as a volume knob. Every "bit" that Dickenson described (these are actually remnants... bits of iron oxide... when they are magnetized, they are called "domains" which basically means that it's a tiny polar magnet) can be PARTIALLY magnetized. You can have degrees of on and off, unlike on digital samples. No matter what your sample rate, a sample can only be on or off, like a power switch. Not as flexible as analog tape, but in most cases, sonically superior to most analog... certainly to cassette tape. Reel to reel will always have some benefits that digital can't reproduce, but at some point, it will become such a finite difference that it won't be possible for any living being to find a fault with digital. And I think Al would agree.
> Unbelivable is a good word. 64 bits would be 384 dB of dynamic range. > I don't think anything on earth hits 200 (Jet takeoffs are around 130). > And dB are a logarithmic scale, like the Richter (sp?) scale for > earthquakes; adding 10 dB means 10 TIMES as much electrical power, > (+20 = 100x, +30 = 1000x... think what "250 dB louder than a jet > engine" implies.)
Well, according to the formula we've been taught, the volume is doubled roughly every 3 dB. Around 136 dB, according to our professor, the ear "gives its final protest" which is generally a bloody affair. hitting 384 dB would have to be an extinction level event. :) The ear's tolerance for volume works proportionally (insofar as it too is a logarithmic scale) to the dB scale, in a sense... the louder the sound, the shorter the duration you can handle. Just an interesting note, I guess.
All of this and more will be covered in Jay Omega's new self-help-guru book "The Nyquist Theorem and You: an introspective journey"

I'm biting my tongue here... There has to be a graceful way out of this. Ahh! I've got it...
My Darling,
If we are listening to SFaM together, the only thing I want in your mouth is the air required to support your beautiful smile.

Only on spiritual level. Show me your ass and I'll pray for you. ;-)

Thank you Chris! I was trying to think of a way to enlighten him without slamming him. One needs to understand the differences between amplitude, bandwidth, and resolution, before applying reasonably good math skills to what appears to be a modest grasp of science as it applies to audio reproduction.
The unnamed Jammer needs to understand that while Bruce Dickinson may not have the technical expertise to word his argument in such a way that would have all the EEs bowing at his feet, he's been around a few recording studios and has first hand experience with both analog and digital in their highest form.
Maybe he should go back and carefully read ALL of the page he quoted from. I have, and I recommend anyone else interested in the topic do the same. http://www.theabsolutesound.com/dvdhope.htm Hint: The decibel figures he was quoting was the dynamic range above the noise floor (signal-to-noise ratio) not the practical limits of the media. Mr. Green is very careful with his wording, and makes it quite clear that the NEWEST digital media is ALMOST as good as analog in terms of sonic accuracy. He also explains that the lower noise floor of digital is outweighed by the (at this time) unavoidable harmonic distortions introduced by the process when the signal levels are low. He should really go back and read that article carefully.
Before getting all excited about the "new" digital media, I recommend he READ the author's buried disclaimer found in the very article he provided the link for.
Robert E. Green wrote: (author) "Most of the discussion in the main article has been based on theory - on the theoretical information capacity of the various digital standards. But we don't listen to theory, and it is natural to ask how well the theory can be put into practice. In particular, is true 96 kHz/24bit recording really possible? Is it available now? And what about 96/24 playback?"
I rest my case...

For those of you that feel deceitful because you've sent requests to a radio station that you think you can't tune in... Think again! They have a live net feed. http://www.93x.com
I'm going to give them another day to make good on their claims.
Then... To quote the "Go Go Gophers" cartoon: "Oopy doopy, we have fun"
