I totally agree! The Tea Party is my favorite band right now (altho SFAM
may change that). They're without a doubt the best band noone has heard of
in the US. They're pretty big in the Great White North (eh?) but I think
the US has something against Canadian bands. I Mother Earth, TP, Big
Wreck, Finger Eleven, etc are all great bands that get practically no
respect in the US. It's a shame

Transmission is actually my favorite album, with Edges of Twilite and
TrypTYCH tied for second place. I wouldn't call the two most recent
techno, 'cause that implies dance music, which they definitely are not.
They're a lot more industrial, while still remaining organic (if that makes
any sense). Transmission has to be my favorite use of keyboards, just
about ever. It's the perfect blend of background ambience, melody,
percussion, and other cool stuff. I encourage everyone to check out the
Tea Party. If you can, check out TrypTYCH, 'cause it's a good blend of
Transmission and Edges of Twilight. EoT is amazing because of their use of
"ethnic" instruments from around the world. They used something like 30
    different instruments on the album.

Ok, after seeing several people re-post
e-mails that they have sent to various radio stations
requesting "Home", it seems to me that these
are not requests for a song...they are mini essays
on the state of the music industry and radio today.

Most of them you have to scroll down halfway through a 25 line
message before you even come to the words 'Dream Theater'
or 'Home'. I doubt the DJs will spend the time to read through
the entire message to try and decipher what the author
    really wants.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I would imagine that most radio DJs
don't like being told by several people that the music
they play is crap, and that they should be 'enlightened'
by Dream Theater. I would think that would piss them
off even more...make them less likely to play a DT song.
I also think that bombarding a station with e-mails such
as this (as in the case of Al's 93X, i think it is), all
with a similar message, "music on the radio sucks, play
some Dream Theater!", is going to seem mighty strange to
them...Someone pointed out that a DJ told him "e-mail
requests are taken more serioiusly than phone requests,
because any fool can call in several times". If you're not
careful, the same thing will happen here...the radio station
recieves many many e-mails in a very short time, all saying
the same thing, almost word for word....They're gonna think
it's coming from the same person, or group.

It'll get to the point where these types of e-mails will
piss them off, and we will never hear DT on their station
    again....

In my opinion, I would think that something short, and to
the point would work for a request...after all, that is what
the end goal of these e-mails should be...to 'request' the song.
Something like "Could you please play "Home" from Dream Theater?
A friend of mine in xxxx city heard it on his radio station and
said it kicked ass".....something that makes it look like you're
really requesting the song, not demanding it be played because
of the shitty state of radio today.

    Hey 'jammers!

I've already read of two new DT Interviews. One in the German
"Metal Hammer" mag and one in the Dutch "Aardschok" (which, btw
means "Earthquake") mag. Could one of the people who possess these
important documents mail me a copy of the interviews (It's okay if you
send it as a scanned pic file - you don't have to type it out).
I would really like to read them and only them. If I buy the whole
mag (I live in Germany), it would be a waste of money because I
am not interested in the other stuff.
When I've read these (hopefully interesting) interviews. I will
choose one, translate it back into English and either
    a)post it on the jam
b)put it on my website and tell you the URL
c)send it to UACM. I don't know if Mark Bredius would actually
      put it up.
So, you would not be sending to me only. But you would give hundreds
of DT fans the possibility to read it.
I hope someone will do this. Thanks.

Yesterday I picked up Vanden Plas's "Far Off Grace". IT ABSOLUTELY
ROCKS!! Normally, I think thrice before I buy any CD, but this one
amazed me so much, I just had to buy it. Except for DT, I had never
listened to any other prog stuff. If the other bands are something
like this, the Ytsejam got me hooked on prog forever.
My favorite songs are Into the Sun, I don't miss you and Iodic Rain.

ITS ONLY 5 DAYS TILL SFAM!!!

    Keep on 'jamming!

***Disclaimer: If you are particularly negative towards the experimentation of or the recreational usage of drugs, please disregard this post and go do something sober.

I was just wondering if anyone else (besides myself and a friend) have experimented with any kind of mind-altering substance while listening to DT. It seems to be an excellent soundtrack to a mushroom trip.

Last year, two close friends and I grew our own crop of psilocybin mushrooms. Within a few days, FII came out...finally. After much planning, we set FII to play repeatedly while we left for a long journey. After we peaked we went inside and sat down and listened to the music we had going. We played the same CD the whole night.

I highly suggest you try it out. Each song makes you "feel" in a different color scheme (I know that might not make sense to some, but try 'shroomies and you'll understand). It fit perfectly with the trip. I used to think it was just a stereotype of "druggies" that I was raised with when I thought of psychedelics "opening up your mind." Well, I'm no longer a skeptic.

This friend of mine is the biggest DT fan I know (save for me ;o), and when we found SfaM available, we knew it was time. After much more planning, we did the same thing approximately a year later, using the same home grown substance, and a not-yet-released DT album. It was great.

    Now...let the flames begin!

Hey newguy, I don't want to be much of a spoil writer but Jordan is obviousley an incerdibly talented pianist/keyboardist. You can check him out "showing off" on www.mikeportnoy.com under the bear tracks studio video clips.... it rules! As for the album itself you need to hear more than the radio edit of Home to make a decision. And since I haven't heard anything else but home at this point I can't say how it is on the rest of the album... But on home it is very hard to distinguish the keys in certain areas i think.... I will wait to pass more judgment though until I hear it on my stereo and not my PC....

All I have to say is that your friend is full of shit. I use IE5 and it works fine. I've viewed the different looking UACM twice now with on my computer with IE5 and at no point have I ever had any problem. The only way IE5 "couldn't pull it up" is if the webmaster limited the traffic to only those with Netscape and why the hell would he want to do that?! There's my two cents...

I'm giving that radio station a few days to lay the golden egg...

I have NOT heard "Home" yet, and I've been keeping a close ear. It would appear we are being humored judging from the obviously pasted reply several of you have received from the station. I have no intention of going away quietly. I'm hoping I can rely on some of you to assist. In preparation for the worst, I'm devising a far more organized battle plan. Once I have all the details worked out I'll share it with you. If it proves successful in the Twin Cities, we'll move on to the next city.

Someone mentioned composing a large text list of radio station e-mail addresses. If someone could do that it would be very useful. If anyone is interested in compiling the list, please come forward! People could research their own area and send the information to you privately. Each participating Jammer can write their own unique request, paste the list into the address bar and BCC (blind carbon copy) every station on the list in one e-mail. If nobody else wants to do this, I will. My present schedule will make it difficult, but I'll live.

Even if only 10% of the listening audience likes the tune, and 1/4 of them purchase the CD, it's bound to boost national sales figures high enough to raise a few eyebrows and entice a few stations to keep it in rotation. Better sales = More support, better venues, and the the opportunity for OFB to continue to creating great music while EARNING a healthy income as well as some much deserved respect from their label.

We will soon learn if the blitzkrieg method is a failure... I certainly hope we don't let them patronize us without consequence. The power of the Jam should never be underestimated. Remember ACoS?

I have had no problems pulling up the website on both nestcape 4.7 and IE5... It's workin for me... if you want to get around it just go to www.dreamtheater.net/index.htm ... This will get you directly to the DT official site and bypass the cover art. If you are dying to see the cover art in progress then go to www.onceinalivetime.com. Of course youmay enter the same problems there.... my thoughts...

Have sent this polite e-mail to the radio station. Let's see if I get the auto-reply everyone else seems to be getting.

    Hi radio people!

As one of your listeners I would really like to hear you play the new Dream Theater single 'Home' which is taken from their latest album release 'Scenes ]From A Memory'.

    Hope you can help.

    Many thanks

Hmm... Neil Morse was talking about that the album would be called 'Second Nature' on the Thoughts list...

I'll do the Home spoilers last, so anyone can read the rest.

    Someone had some keys questions:

    >1) for those of us who HAVEN'T heard "Home" (or any of >the rest of the album), how do you think Jordan's >playing will fit in w/ DT? It fits LTE perfectly... >but I have a hard time imagining how it will fit DT.

    *spoiler?*

Based on the radio edit, I couldn't hear much. :)

    *end spoiler 1*

    >2) does anyone else think that Kevin's playing didn't >fit "Awake"? IMHO, DT should have remade "Awake" w/ >Derek. His heavier tone would have fit that ablum >better.

Yes, and it was a major topic on both the jam and the newsgroups at the time. 90% of people, myself included, felt that Kevin sounded like he just did session work and left. Since Derek has joined the band, I think the rose-colored glasses have come out and some people claim that Awake has better keys than I&W. Personally, I felt the keys were at way too low a volume level for most of the album.

    Digital Vs Analog:

To the guy who said that increasing to 96 bit would mean 300+ decibels of sound:

As much as I enjoy arguing against Al (grin) -- you've missed the point here. adding to the bits in a digital stream does not necessrily mean more high volumes. What it means is a higher resolution -- more discrete steps in the same decibel range. Think of it like switching from 22 Khz to 44 Khz sampling rate. Youy don't get something twice as long, you get something with twice the subtlety. And that's where Digital falls behind the ultra high-end analog gear.

And now more Home discussions (Spoilers here for those who haven't heard the radio edit)

I think people missed the point, or maybe I just didn't make it well. I'm not saying that I don't like the song or that it isn't proggy enough for me. I'm claiming that it won't make too many new fans. Pull Me Under has a great sound, even in the radio cut form, that attracted a lot of new fans to the band (me included) -- I just don't hear Home doing that. There isn't a gut-wrenching YOU MUST BUY THIS ALBUM vibe about it. And it doesn't matter one bit that the full version is better. A casual listener is only going to hear the radio version and make their decision to become a fan based upon that. If that radio version doesn't hook them, then they are unlikely to listen to the "better" version of the song.

The radio version is not made for the benefit of the existing fans. It's made to try to get new ones to buy the new album. And people who were disappointed in FII who hear Home are going to think "more of the same" and possibly not buy the album.

Now, me personally, I think FII was their second best album (to I&W) and Scenes has a definitel likelyhood to upset that list, given what I know. I even think the radio version of Home is pretty cool. Enough to burn it onto a CD-R and make a cover for it (I was bored) As a song, I like it, but as a *single* I don't think it measures up.

    ~Chris
