Heaviness is irrelevant. If it's expressive, creative, and played from the
heart by talented musicians, it rules!
The No Exit recording isn't perfect, but my main system takes some of
the hair off it and presents it quite well. What hooks me is Ray Alder's
vocal work on "In A Word" and "The Ivory Gate Of Dreams." This is some
of the most emotional and powerful vocals I've ever heard in rock music.
The chemistry between Matheos and Aresti is wonderful. Joe DiBiase
lays down a subtle framework that just oozes with detail and has that
unique grove that gave Fates their signature sound. Steve Zimmerman
certainly is no match for Mark Zonder, but he does a very solid job of
providing a foundation for some really great music.
No Exit gets very regular rotation around here.

Oops. I feel dumb. I've never heard DT on the radio (and am not that
familiar with any radio edit), or on MTV, so I didn't realize that the
song was 13 minutes long and almost one third of it was being cut out.
So I retract my argument about it being predictable. I stand by the
rest. I really didn't like the radio edit, and I hope it doesn't color
my perception of what otherwise would be a very rocking full length
song. I wish I hadn't heard the radio edit. Some of you might not want
to download it, and wait for the full thing. On that point, I don't
think I'd like to hear the radio stations playing this song. Since most
of you agree that the radio edit is not exactly a tribute to DT, I'd
rather not have people saying "Oh, so THAT'S the Dream Theater people
have been talking about. Well gee diddly, they suck."
Thanks for the offer Al, but the only hands on me when I listen to the
album, or any other time, will be my boyfriend's.

I think complaining about "heaviness" kind of misses the point. I really
think DT is at their best when not in a strictly metal context. Songs like
Metropolis, The Killing Hand, and A Change of Seasons are so wonderful not
because they are particularly heavy, but because they have such an
interesting range of sounds within a passionate, emotional context. Though
they have bits and pieces of metal scattered throughout, they can't be
pigeonholed as metal songs. I would be very disapointed if DT released an
album consisting of really heavy metallic songs instead of the diverse
palette they are capable of.

You find the lead for Tiles more annoying than the lead for Lemur Voice? This I don't understand. That is what really turns me off about them, is that I can't stand their lead.
I don't think there is much that is 'wannabe DT' in Tiles. I hear more Rush influences than DT influences...

First off, I don't think they have been overhyped on this list. Not like Dali's Delemma. (Rather overrated compared to the word here on them.) As for the rash of 'OK' bands, that has to happen to get great ones. It is the sign of a great genre.
As for Tiles, I like them well enough. I think they are a fine band.

It looks like Al won. Congratulations. I've included the post that I sent,
in my new anonymous persona (I sent a post 2 days before it in NEWBIE all
caps and no punctuation/spellcheck in my own name, for fun) We should all
move on to the next station. Who's next? LA? Philly? Howard Stern? I
seriously think this is a good idea. Home is different enough that people
may notice it, and it's similar enough to what could play on the radio these
days that it wouldn't turn anyone off.
Maybe those of us with the album should mail Howard about the heavier parts
(track number and time) of the album, in case he wants another "Soundtrack
you'd hear in hell"

I wrote this to 93X yesterday!!! Below is the letter I wrote and the
reponse I got back!
*****Hello,
I was writing to request that you play the new Dream Theater Release
"Home" off their new album "Scenes from a memory". I think music like
this is severely underrated as compared to untalented (or maybe just
unliked IMHO) bands like Bush, limp B., and all that other junk that is
being released as "rock and roll". Hey, there is definitely an audience
for that stuff for sure and I am by no means expressing my opinion that
you stop playing this music. It would just be nice to hear some Dream
Theater. The people want it and you want good ratings!!!
I appreciate you taking the time to read our emails also!!
keep rockin,
Jonathan Willey******
93X WROTE:
****No problem, we'll play it again for ya!
Thanks for listening to 93X!****
Now, i'll be honest, I have never listened to that station before in my
life... But, I am taking this to mean they have started playing the
song??? Or maybe they are just blowing me off! It also means they are not
looking for where the email came from so keep emailing them you all!!!
Anyway, If they are playing this song then major f****ing kudo's to
AL!!!!!!!! You did it man....
take it easy....
PS: Amanda, no problem, BUT, If anyone listening to the radio edit of
home actually thinks it sucks then they have some serious issues. It is
not what the long version is but it is better than most of what is out
there on the air anyway! You have to agree with that???? IMHO....
see ya

I doubt that Howard would play it. He doesn't play a lot of music on his
show, except for the bumpers. And if he does play music, it is usually to
make fun of it. He also seems to be enamored with Korn-style bands (he talks
a lot about Kid Rock and Limp Bizkit), though I think might have something
to do with the station he's on, as that's the style of music they play. He
seems to be down on "metal" at the moment, but I think it's because he
doesn't think his audience wants to hear that style of music. At least this
is the vibe I got from a rant he went on last week. It would be cool to hear
them on the show, though. I still remember that "gates of Hell opening"
comment myself. I was laughing so hard I almost drove off the road.
Anyway, congrats to any and all that get their local station to play
anything remotely resembling music. I turn the radio off right after Howard
in the morning. I just can't take it.

Hey everyone - here's (maybe not) a little eye-opener:
Alrighty - upon investigation of the filenames of the 50x50 pixel album
cover "puzzle pieces" on UACM and the Elektra website, I've found that each
piece is named something relating to a piece of DT history. I have created
a page on my web site that shows the correspondance between the filenames
and the pictures. I have also compiled both websites' pieces onto one page.
The URL: http://www.public.asu.edu/~ytsedave/dt/cover.htm
I apologize in advance for the shitty speed of ASU's web server... :(
The page has 5 sections:
1. The revealed pieces of the album cover - 400x400 pixels
2. The revealed pieces of the album cover - 400x400 pixels, with space in
between each piece
3. The revealed pieces of the album cover - 800x800 pixels
4. The revealed pieces of the album cover - 800x800 pixels, with space in
between each piece
5. The filenames of the revealed pieces of the album cover - 800x800 pixels
I don't know if I'm looking into something that isn't there, or what. In
any case, its starting to remind me of Pink Floyd's "Division Bell" cover
and the contoversy surrounding it... :)
P.S. Something else to think about - does anyone know if Strom Thorgerson
did this cover? Because he DID do the "Division Bell"...

reason : school work, games, and most importanly listening to that guys

Man I have to totally agree with you there. Some may not understand (if

Hey, I'm from G.R. also, and those bastards at KLQ just pretended they

Well, I don';t really think that this can be considered anythng of a
spoiler, but here is a warming just in case...
Anyway, what I wanted to say is that, after listening to SFAM for
quite some time now (w/o much in the way of commenting to anyone), I
must say that it is an amazing CD... the radio edit sorta kill's Home
-- IMO, it is one of the most amazing, kick ass songs that DT has
released... It took me a long time to actually make it past Home when
listening to the CD, b/c I kept on listening and listening to HHome
over and over again... Its got some great prog sound to it... I
still don't know if, a favorite song, that I wouild place it above
Learning To Live, but as a CD, I think that SFAM has the potential to
overturn I&W as my favorte all-time CD... It is truely that good...
My next point, for those listing rogged Radio as liten.to/progged, I
think that they have "offically" become a part of
http://www.progradio.net (http://www.progradio.net/progged takes you
directly there)... They play some quite amazing stuff on this
stream... I've been listening to them for a while out at work...
great stuff...
Finally,. I got my copy of the Spock's Beard Live @ The Whiskey &
Nearfest CD in the mail last weekend (as well as trhe live @ the
Whiskey video)... Anyway, _great_ sounding CD... its mostly just
from the souindboard, no remixing, etc... so good chance to hear
Spock's Beard live & raw... Also, some GREAT bass sound on the CD...
I almost have to turn down the bass on my stereo its so strong...

Yngwie-ism in the tracklist ?
I have to say I don't agree. All I can see is that SFaM has "Overture 1928"
while Yngwie's second album (Marching Out) has "Overture 1828". The
tracklist clearly has a coherent, storytelling feel to it, while to my
knowledge Yngwie has never done anything remotely like that. Probably never
will, too since his songs' lyrics are below average at best.

I love all three bands mentioned in the above paragraph, no question - yes,
Tiles included as I've so fervently demonstrated in a few recent posts. Not
to beat the Tiles thing like a dead horse, but personally, I find the
statement that they're a 'DT wannabe' to be a ridiculous assertion. It's
gotten to the point on this list where DT is just the defacto yardstick
against which EVERYTHING else is measured. And as much as I think the new
DT kicks ass (yes, I've heard the whole thing - several times over), it's
not exactly pushing any musical boundaries and I think there ARE quite a few
bands trying to do just that - all with whiz-bang musicianship, etc.
But I digress. There's a lot of truely phenominal stuff going on right now
that's not as readily accessible was Magna Carta releases and other such
progmetal that you can readily get your hands on. Anyone have Mayadome's
'Near Life Experience', of the even better Clockwork's 'Surface Tension'?
Both are on smaller lables and have to be ordered through some place like
The Laser's Edge, but both are absolutely great albums that would leave most
everyone around here laying in a puddle of drool. And, yes, both stack of
pretty favorably to THE YARDSTICK. What about Gordian Knot? Behind the
Curtain?
As usual, I'm incoherent. What do you want from someone who drinks beer and
coffee in equal amounts?
Mike, who is officially throwing in the towel on the whole Tiles thread - if
I could make blind men see, I wouldn't be programming for a living.

Hey all.
Just wanted to tell you that it is good living in the Netherlands.
Yesterday my week long autumn vacation started. Coming Friday SFAM
will be released over here. I just ordered it. Monday will see the
release of the long awaited Control Denied album, I ordered that too.
In Aardschok [the Dutch metal/rock magazine] the new Dream theater
was voted album of the month [92 points out of 100], it also has an
interesting DT interview. And this week I will receive the tickets
for the DT concert of the 11th of November in Zwolle [Will I be
seeing you there Marc??].
To top it all we will be buying our first house in the coming months.
Like I told you.. life is good.... ;-)

I got the same message, but a bit longer. Maybe mine was prior to the
filter...
