    Hey, Al,

What's a proctologist anyway ? Sounds like a brain teaser. Well, im sure
most of you have picked up the latest DT album, here , in alabama, with my
little fan base of me, and 4 other DT fans ( i know, i was shocked at first
too ), we're trying to figure out how to harass the stores into giving DT a
chance. So far, we've had no luck. and none of us trust buying off the Net.
That may be our only problem...

    To Whom it May Concern,

Something bothers me that has recently come to my attention. I'll
appreciate you taking the time to let me share it with you.

However, before I get to that, I want to establish a few things. I am not
a crazed fan of Dream Theater, with nothing better to do. I am also not
your typical "anti-radio" music listener who believes that a certain genre
of music (or a certain band, as the case sometimes is) should dominate your
format at the expense of any of the bands your other listeners are familiar
with. I am by no means trying to shove anything down *your* throat, even
though 93X and dozens of other radio stations across the US do a fine job
of force-feeding the same songs to their listeners in a mindlessly
    repetitive fashion.

That said, I'd like to briefly state my point of view on what was recently
brought to my knowledge. As I know you're aware, Elektra has released the
band Dream Theater's new single, "Home". Your station received a copy of
this, and your program director decided that no one would be interested in
hearing it. I am in absolute disagreement with this type of attitude. I'm
sure you'd claim that the music you play is based on your listeners' best
interests; shouldn't the listener be able to decide whether or not they're
interested in the song *before* *YOU* decide not to play it? I am sure you
are not the only station guilty of this, and I'm sure that *this* is a good
part of the reason for many underrated bands' continued struggles to have
their music (which may, for all we know, actually be *good*) exposed to the
    masses.

I don't ask for you to respond to this e-mail with an explanation of or
excuse for your rationale. I don't ask for you to immediately find "Home",
play it a few times, and e-mail me stating that you have done so and still
    don't feel it's worth playing.

I would simply ask that you seriously reconsider the type of "attitude" I'm
referring to, and at least put the single in *light* rotation. What do you
have to lose? If no one likes it, and no one requests it, then by all
means remove it from your play list. On the other hand, if it does, I'll
be happy. ;) And 93X listeners throughout the area will have a new song to
    listen to and enjoy.

I thank you for your time and patience, and hope you will consider what
    I've addressed.

    Sincerely,
    Brian Larkin

Has anyone seen Yngwie lately in concert? It sounds like his shows used to be pretty cool, but is he still any good. I haven't got any of his albums since Rising Force except for a greatest hits sort of thing from the early nineties. Considering we don't get many shows from this genre down here, is he worth seeing or should I skip the show?

Aha, but what if you came across a particularly tempting dish on that menu? Sometimes to succeed on a 'diet' (metaphorically speaking of course) one has to practise total abstinence - like those who have unsubbed from the jam until the new album release date.

For example, the mere 'smell' of chocolate can cause mega-salivation in an addict ;-) However, I suppose you can still go 'window-shopping' occasionally, just don't go into the chocolate shop ....... Thornton's in particular!

I live in the tri-state area. I've never heard a single dream theater on any radio station here, ever. (includes 95.5, 102.7, 104.3, 105.5, 92.3, etc) Is it actually SURPRISING that they're not playing Home? 9 out of 10 people don't like DT. You can counter argue that with CDNow list results, but that's becuase the Dream Theater website points DT fans there. If it didn't, I'm sure SFAM wouldn't be up there. Not to be as any sort of disrespect, becuase DT is my favorite band, just facing facts.

helping Al out .. just sent this to 93x

dear 93x, it's come to my attention that a single individual in the upper corporate echelons of your station has made the decision that the "home" single by dream theater is not what he wants to hear, and subsequently has decided that your station will not play the song. it frustrates me that 93x refuses the audiences ear, because your music director doesn't fancy something. this seems pretty fascist to me. if you check dream theater's history you'll find one of the largest and most committed followings any band has had. This is their 4th studio release, and their 3rd on Atlantic (WEA). they've been making their label money for the last 10 years, which means that people have been buy their music for the last 10 years, and further, people have been LISTENING to their music for the last 10 years. Yet, you refuse to play their new material. i personally don't care what kind of crap your music director puts in his CD player at home, but i'm insulted that he would refuse his listening base what they want to hear.

I guess the severity of this statement depends on which tri-state area you're referring to. I lived in NJ up until 5 years ago, and I always figured that THAT was THE tri-state area. Upon moving to Vermont, however, I learned that VT, NH, and ME also call themselves "the tri-state area", but I know better ;).

I had never heard of DT before coming to VT. Quite a few people in this area are familiar with them, and I'm constantly surprised by the large number of DT fans up here. Talking to old friends in Jersey, none of them have even HEARD of DT...

BTW, can't get any radio play up here, either...

" No. Actually, John is very soft-spoken, and in fact has only been documented as speaking twice. Once, when he said "I'm feeling kind of spooky" in the Live in Tokyo video. The second time was when he said "Excuse me" to Chris Ptacek, who was blocking his path at the DT House of Blues (Chicago) FII tour show."

Just another observation...I've been playing SFaM in my store for quite some time now, and posted to the jam a few comments about how non-ytse DT fans in the area have been saying it's given new hope and stuff...anyways I also want to state that MANY non-DT fans have been asking about the album whenever I play it, and have been bummed that they have to wait until the 26th before they can buy it. Sure, it's not exactly the bands wishes (sorry guys!), but the overall response has been EXCELLENT in a store that mostly sells Limp Bizkit, DMB, Sarah Mclachlan, Creed (not like that's a bad thing), 311, Live...I think you get my point. I'd be willing to bet that due to extensive in-store play, I'll be selling at least 15 copies of SFaM on the 26th...versus the whole 1 or 2 copies other stores in town might sell to die-hard DT fans. So I guess my point is...the Veil thing isn't a bad thing, but I know in this area it sure won't help album sales.

    Greetings fellow Jamsters,

I really need some help here.. So far only 6 Jammers have sent me mail indicating they have mailed my local radio station. I really need them "AWAKE" on this Dream Theater issue. Those of you that have mailed them please let me know so I can keep an accurate count. mailto:al@isd.net I'd really like a blind carbon copy of what's sent if you don't mind.

So far these Jammers have helped me in my quest:

Fran Brennan Chris Ptacek Andrew Coutermarsh Daniel T. Chen John Parks Jonathan Willey

If you've mailed the station and you're not listed above, please let me know!

Those of you that have not mailed them: GET OFF YOUR ASS! :o) mailto:mail@93x.com Please keep it respectable and don't let on that you're not in the listening area. If necessary, remove anything in your sig that would indicate otherwise. I really don't think they are smart enough to read the full header to determine if the message is local.

For those of you that are tired of hearing me whine: Blow me.. I want some decent coverage of OFB's new album so they can capture some new fans, wake up some sleeping ones, and gain enough local support to land a good venue when it's time to tour.

I'm not going to take this shit lying down... I WILL PREVAIL!!! Your support could keep me from doing something REALLY stupid. :) -- Al - The Ytse-ProGtologist ^ Switchcraft Microsystems ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ When you live in the land of 10,000 lakes, it's nice to know that all men are created equal in cold water.

Someone last digest asked about Blind Guardian. Blind Guardian's new cd is supposed to be released at the end of 2000, or the beginning of 2001. The Demons & Wizards album will be released end 1999, begin 2000, so we'll hear Hansi's voice again soon ;). BG is also doing another project, of which they hope that it might be included in the Lord of the Ring-movie soundtrack.

    FORGOTTEN SUNS - Fiction Edge Demo PORTUGAL Rating: * * * =BD 1998 PRIVATE Time: 34:36

Forgotten Suns are: Linx: Vocals Ricardo Falc=E0o: Guitars Miguel Valadares: Synthesisers Jo=E3o Tiago: Bass Nuno S=E9nica: Drums

    Tracklist: 1. Wartime (3:52) 2. Creation Point (5:40) 3. Big Bang (5:56) 4. Lost (Back Home) (7:26) 5. Routine (11:39)

It isn't often you get the chance to hear progressive rock bands from Portugal, but here is a 5 track demo CD release from a band called Forgotten Suns.

They are playing neo-symphonic rock, very much in the 80's vein with reminiscences to Arena, Marillion ca. "Script For A Jester's Tear" (1983) and Pendragon, and if you like these bands, Forgotten Suns won't disappoint you either. Maybe there are some Dream Theater reminiscences too, but not that obvious.

There aren't any weak tracks at all on this demo, and even if they aren't magnificent they are showing a great starter for things to come. 4:45 minutes into the track "Lost (Back Home)" comes a part that is very reminiscent to Marillion's song "Forgotten Sons" from their "Script From A Jester's Tear" album. The band's name Forgotten Suns seems to be inspired from the same track. The highlight is the final epic track "Routine" that is +11 minutes long.

The singer Linx is perhaps the true star in the band with a voice that is a mix between Jon Anderson and Fish. The recording quality as well as the compositions and arrangements are very good for a demo release.

If you are missing Marillion's Fish era you can find comfort in this demo CD. A band with a great debut and a promising future!

They seem to be working on an upcoming concept CD about the history of our planet. Doesn't that sounds interesting or what? I'm really looking forward to hear it for sure.

Someone asked about the "missing"cover art on CD now for SFaM. I suspect that CD Now goofed and put up the cover without DT's permission. I believe the cover art may be too specific to the "vial of secrecy".

Are you talking about Vanden 'most overrated progmetal band of the last couple years' Plas? Hey, you want to listen to some progmetal that doesn't sound like every other band doing progressive metal? Try Clockwork and Behind the Curtain....

    >And, IMHO, better than Fates >Warning in many respects.

And the reason for the comparison to Fates would be...what? The two bands are not even REMOTELY related.

    >(Does everyone agree that No Exit is much better >than Parallels?)

Sure, EVERYONE on this list likes No Exit better than Parallels. Please excuse the sound of my wretching.

    Love,
