HI: List
As a relatively new member of this list I am quite surprised to read
that the general feeling regarding FII is that it was a poor DT album.
I'm sorry but that's absolute bollocks. FII is an absolutely amazing
album, far better than Awake (IMHO). I love every single album, and I
think FII is the best. Although its true to say that there isn't a
Metropolis pt1 on there, every song on the album stands up well, without
having to rely on one single track to take all the attention.
I completely fail to see this, "its to commercial" tag people keep on
pinning to it. Its certainly no more a commercial record than any other
Dream Theater album.
Songs such as New Millennium, Peruvian Skies and Trial of Tears are
awesome and Scenes From A Memory had better be as good as everyone says
it is to compete with FII as a worthy follow up (although I have no
doubt it will be).
Anyway that's just my take on things and before anyone says that I must
be a bigger fan of Dream Theaters more commercial side - my favorite DT
song is A Change Of Seasons!

Hi there!
I know that I'm not supposed to tell anything concerning the new DT.
Well at least until it's official...
In the latest german Metal-Hammer Magazin there's a big interview with
Portnoy and Petrucci about the new DT and the lyrical background. You'll be
pleased with what you'll hear! Believe me...
One other thing is that there's a big promo advertisement for the new DT. So
that's offcial, too. First of all, you'll get wet eyes when you read the
(full) title of the new album AND, at least to this ad, well let's put it
that way: If you didn't like the FII DT font... you'll be happy again!
So long!
Release date Germany: According to record label ad in Metal Hammer: Oct.
25th...
Yeeehaaa!

** Please forward this to the station program director **
To whom it may concern:
A friend informed me of your stations "we play what WE think is good" programming
policy. I assumed this station played ALL new material within the stations format and
let the listening public decide what THEY wanted to hear. Request information was
compiled to aid in developing a play list for regular rotation.
It's been brought to my attention that your music director has single-handedly keep
the soon to be released (available in promo) Dream Theater CD from seeing the light of
day. Have you been to CD now and seen their top 100 sales list? Last I looked the DT
album was in the 30s. Yet YOU have decided that WE would not be interested in hearing
this new material.
The twin Cities music scene is tainted enough without the added censorship on your
part. If KQRS had this same attitude in the late 60s and early 70s, bands like YES,
Jethro Tull, Rush, Deep purple, Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, and Emerson Lake & Palmer
would have never been supported in the Twin Cities. I remember, I was a KQ listener back
then. Rather than bore us to death with the same stagnant crap you keep in regular
rotation, we'd like something new in the mix.
93-X has been my tuner's last line of defense. With no apparent support of the
Progressive - Prog/Metal genre in your programming future, my tuner may never grace the
signal path of my audio gear again... Home or car.
Well... There's always talk radio.

Cyberduke, et al:
I am certain that one of my main intentions in buying an album is to support a band. For that reason, I won't buy a DT album used, and I won't get a promo and not buy the album. I won't burn copies for my friends, or accept a burn from someone else (except pre-release, of course. :) I definitely think that's a fair statement.
There are cases in which I don't really care... some ambient music that I don't listen to that much, I'm just as happy to get an MP3 or a burn of an album.... but if it's anything I listen to a lot, I buy it. What's wrong with that? How can you pretend to know my motivation? And how could you/why would you knock that intention? If you were a programmer, working on a new piece of multitrack recording software, you'd be pissed if people stole your code, or warez'd your app and you didn't get paid for your work. As a musician, it's the same damn thing. I think it's narcissistic to pretend that "it's cool if I just burn my buddy's cd collection and save all that money. It doesn't hurt the band, cuz I can't afford his whole collection, so the band would never get that money anyways." Someone has to buy the stuff, somewhere down the chain. Why should they buy it and you get it for free? Don't answer that. You know we'll have a flame war if you do.
I'll buy a new album from an artist, rather than get MP3s from him/her and decide if I like it through that alone. I'm not necessarily buying the music because I know I like it. When I was younger, I bought every guitar related album I could find... as a result I have a shred archive with a lot of great and a lot of terrible players. But the method for finding out whether I liked them or not was always to buy the album, whether I'd heard of the dude or not.

About certain things, yes. A lot of us will probably say that, regardless of whether of not slavery it *legal* at a certain point in time, for example, it nonetheless is in and of itself immoral. Ditto for certain other concrete things, like the murder of innocents, things like that. So, for settled issues where there's widespread agreement, I can see the appeal in saying that ethics and morals have a more universal quality to them than does legality.
HOWEVER... don't forget that there's *lots* of things that AREN'T settled in this way, ethically speaking. So, for example, you might be tempted to say, "Sure abortion is legal, but legality isn't nearly as absolute as ethics, and abortion is morally wrong." Obviously, the problem with that sort of appeal is that there is widespread disagreement over the fact of the matter of morality with regard to abortion, so an appeal to ethics here might not get you very far.
So, what am I saying... well, just that it's fair to want to make a moral appeal on an issue as opposed to a legal appeal, but with a lot of things, that's REALLY tricky ground to establish.

Tom Morello is the guitarist for Rage Against the Machine, or one of the guitarists, as I'm not familiar with their current lineup. Man, does the idea of him and James Hetfield appearing on a Primus album just make anyone else want to cover their ears, as if you were being bombarded with the cries of mating cats? Primus meets RATM meets Metallica.. the worlds sickest supergroup, outside the realm of r&b.

does anyone know if Jay Beckenstein has played with DT other than what's heard on I&W and OIAL, and if so, are there any bootlegs or MP3's with him? His sax really compliments DT's ballads, but I can't take Spyro Gyra's "happy jazz". also, does anyone know where I can find an MP3 of "Eve"? and one more thing: on the "Live in Japan" video, they do a funky little jam after LSOAD. What's that called? it's really cool!

I think that the reason pernod is used as a sub. for absinthe is b/c they taste very similar. My guess is, if you hate Pernod, then absinthe would rub you the wrong way, too...
It's true that absinthe is a hallucinogen. It contains a small amount of wormwood, which is what causes the hallucinations. The only problem is, absinthe was mostly homemade, and often times the wormwood content was too great (either accidentally or purposely ;) ), and this is VERY dangerous.
Incidentally, absinthe was a fav or Ernest Hemingway.
If mild hallucinogens are your thing, then you ought to check out Mezcal (so titled b/c it is distilled from the same plant from which mescalin (sp?) is extracted). It is a liquor produced in Mexico, reminiscent of Tequila. It comes complete with the famous worm sitting in the bottom of the bottle... The label reads "Mexican warriors used to drink this liquor before battle because it heightened their senses by allowing them to SEE SOUNDS and HEAR COLORS." I thought that this was a type-o at first but...
If the thought of eating a worm doesn't sit right with you, then put it on a sandwich. Worked for my roomate...

To be more accurate, it was Korg (u folks remember him?) who posted a fake quote, supposedly by MP, saying that Derek had been booted for being gay and sampling his live stuff... And I'll be damned, but I just deleted that post a few days ago... And now that the track listing has been revealed, anyone also noticed a certain "Yngwie-ism" in some of the titles?

He's the guitarist for Rage Against the Machine. A while back Guitar World hailed him as the new Jimmy Page/Van Halen. I guess he fits the Jimmy Page bit because what he lacks in technical ability he makes up with some damn cool riffs. You don't see RAtM mentioned much here, but they're definately a band worth checking out.

yeah. and Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam as well. When the Doors were inducted into the hall of fame they even got Eddie to sing for them which must have been an honor. Dave said some stuff about the movie...
> I can remember reading an interview with John Densmoore and he said > that he didn't like the movie because it was Oliver Stones fantasy of
wasn't the movie based on the book "No one gets out of here alive" which was written by like a fourteen year old boy who used to hang around with the Doors. I've heard a lot of people say that the movie wasn't very accurate. But its still a lot of fun. On the drugs topic, I don't think I needed drugs to enjoy the Doors at first but I sure felt like taking them afterwards. No wonder I'm doing so badly at school now- if anyone tells you that rock and roll is bad for the brain, they're right.
