Actually, he's not wrong. Here is exactly what Mr. Portnoy had to say on
    the subject:

"Our biggest selling album to date in America was "Images & Words" which was
certified Gold (over 500,000 copies sold in the US) largely due to success
of Pull Me Under on US radio.
Since then, the radio & MTV market in America has drastically changed -
which has weeded out the fans of "our new hit single" and our sales have
leveled out to reflect our "real" fan-base which has been in the 200,000 US
    sales vicinity each time out..

Our real sales have added up from over-seas markets (Germany, Italy,
Holland, Brazil, Japan, etc..) where we do very well because those markets
are less dependant on radio & MTV. For instance, all of our CD's have gone
platinum in Japan (100,000 in Japan alone)

I suppose the "safe" answer is that we consistently sell somewhere around
half a million Worldwide each time out..."

That's 500,000 worldwide, exactly what this guy said.

Ummm the only thing I remember that even closely resembles this, is a joke
that someone posted to the list with FAKE quotes from Mike saying that Derek
was gay and had to sequence all his parts live. People then started this
thread from hell over whether DT were gay-bashers. It was stupid. Every time
they've been asked, in every interview I've seen, they've stuck to their
story which is: "No hard feelings between them and Derek, they simply felt
that since they'd done the live album it was time for a change, and they
felt Jordan had the sound that they wanted to carry them into the 21st
century." That's it! There may be more to it, but that's the official story
as far the band is concerned. Noone in the band has ever said anything other
than this. And NOONE ever said anything about Derek being gay (except on
    here).

However true it might be that we like some music, don't tell me your
intention is support. You buy the muic 'cause you like it, want to own
it in your collection, want to blast in on your speakers!
If Garth Brooks records an album and surely known that money from it
will go for helping the poor kids in Africa, will you buy it? No you
    won't, because you hate him!

If you wanna help, you'll give direct donation, certainly not buying
something which you won't listen 'till the rest of your life, or at
least inless you give it as a present to
your nephew who happenes to like country music. One way or another, you
DON'T buy it 'cause you wanna go around and fill the pockets of your
fave bands. It is just an extra good thing 'cause you like the band and
we want the genre to get more recognized, but it is SECONDARY, it is a
    natural
effect of the act You_Buying_The_Release, and not the primar reason.

Legal rights, bla, bla ... last time I checked laws were not perfect.
Seen from different perspective it's stupid to prove somebody's wrong
just by the fact that this-and-this law says it is ILLEGAL to do this.
Everybody knows those record companies are greedy, but right now the
goverment support them with the laws existing. But I'm sure things will
    change in future.

About the immoral/illegal debate, I think the "immoral" wins.
Ethics and morals are more absolute standard than present existing laws.

You shouldn't even mention it. The explanation was simply that they felt Jordan fir better into the musical personality of the band. If Mike ever said anything involving the word "gay" it would have to be something like "I don't know or care if Derek is gay or not, and it had nothing to do with why we chose Jordan over him."

Ummmmmm... I kinda resent this comment. I actually LOVE Garth Brooks, and why? Because I try to open myself to types of music that others may not listen to. The result was that I ended uploving Garth's music even though I hadn't planned on it.

Country music is really not that bad. Really.

This just in from Atlantic records digital spew:

*QUEENSRYCHE LET THE GUITARS FLY WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM THEIR FRIENDS,=20 BOTH OLD AND NEW*

Queensr=FFche certainly have a few friends in Washington. Recently Daily World (out of Aberdeen) found the Seattle quintet's newest, Q2K, to be full of classic 'R=FFche-styled riffing, yet infused with a new and invigorating energy. "This is vintage Queensr=FFche, laced with a sort of hunger."

Admittedly, there has been a subtle shift in the band musically, coming in the form of new co-guitarist Kelly Gray (a former producer for Alice in Chains). An accomplished musician himself, Gray was originally only slated to produce Q2K, but when Chris DeGarmo left the band, Gray suddenly had a new job. Despite the addition of a new element, the Queens=FFche sound remains intact. The intricate guitar work, heavy chugging riffs, powerfully sung vocals, and wah-wah pedaling are all still there. But as Wilkins notes on the album's relentless first single "Breakdown," "Gray has introduced a real grunge sensibility here, and the cross pollination with the Alice in Chains camps is even more apparent."

Just to clarify, I'm not dissing anybody if they don't like a certain type of music. I do understand that the comment made about Garth Brooks was at least slightly in jest and was meant to be funny (at least, I assume it was).

There has being a topic going on these last days abot commercialism, artists selling out, etc. I agree with that guy that said "if you like it buy it, if not don't". It's hard to say what has been turning inside an artist's head when he release an album that implies a big change of direction, even when you can make a fairly right guess. Maybe they're fed up of playing the same staff again and again but they keep on doing it because they make money. A change of style is a risky business because they can lose a lot of their previous fans and not making new ones. But when they try to compose more accesible songs to get to a wider range of public (uhm, did that happen with FII?) IMO they deserve the failure. FII was a nice album and could have been a sucess for the overall public with the proper publicity. They could have released three or four singles and videos and the selling figures would have gone farther than I&W. But for a DT fan the album is such a dissapointment...Change and evolution are different words. About the selling figures: here in Spain I&W was difficult to get at the beggining, but after Awake a bunch of "nice-price" copies of it can be found anywhere. It was the same in other countries?

Greetings all, for those of you who save these look back to this issue and e-mail #5 came from a guy who now goes by 'Dark Tower'. Well, Peter is his name and he was telling us that their new CD, his and Jeff's, is out and wants us to buy it claiming it has Dream Theater influences on it. Well....he's right!!!! The only thing missing is a REAL drummer. Alas, it's computer programmed by Jeff. But if I didn't tell you that, you would not have known. You can check out the tunes at www.iresonance.com it's the band site. Well, since I have a copy I'll tell some about it. Peter has very strong vocal skills, he has studied with Geoff Tate's vocal teacher for several years. And he writes the lyrics for IR. His partner, Jeff is the musician in the group, AT THIS TIME. They are STILL looking for that certain drummer to fill the shoes of the computer. And this person HAS GOT to be a monster on the kit. I got shot down and I've got 20 ++ years of playing. Anyway, check out the site and the tunes, for TWO guys this is good and a full band at or above their level...well who knows.

    Hi there to everyone!!

I just wanted to ask if anyone knows whether the HOME single will be released as a CD-single or not, and if so, when will it be??

Did you see the track list of the 'Scenes from a memory'?? I was disappointed that "Metropilis-partII' is not included, or is it 'Dance Of Eternity'? Anyway, we'll all see in 11 days!!

    Please answer me!!

    Thank you in advance,

I can remember reading an interview with John Densmoore and he said that he didn't like the movie because it was Oliver Stones fantasy of what it would have been like to have been Jim Morrison when he (Stone) was sat in a trench in Vietnam, and if anyone ha read the book Riders on the Storm you will get a different impression of Jim than is portrayed in the movie. If you are someone that thinks Jim was an idol based on what you saw in the film don't read the book.

I would agree with Al on how to listen to these guys, being in the right frame of mind and in the right setting make such a difference.

As for the people that say they were shit, I can think of a lot of other mega bands out around that time that I think were really shit e.g. The Beatles (they have got a lot to answer for IMO)

    Dave.

Woah, this last jam was the best in ages. Today is a good day for me in prog. The local prog-metal radio station has been shifted out of the 2:00-6:00am slot to a time I can actually listen to it; there's a bunch of cool prog bands playing on halloween near me, as opposed to those dodgy hardcore bands; and second person from my home town arrive on the jam.

Look in the FAQ- follow the links from www.dreamtheater.net

Then, sadly, some people wrote this crap about the Doors being untalented and stuff- I always feel sorry for people who think they are above this type of music. Then Al wrote..

You're right, Val Kilmer did make a good Jim, but unfortunately now I can't watch him without imagining him in a Batman suit.

The trick is to put the guitar amp simulator on and leave it on. The tones are always a bit digital but keep working with it and you'll get some pretty decent tones. The only thing it really lacks is a really nice clean tone, but luckily if you can get this out of your amp, there is a bypass button.
