This is my first ever post to this awesome list! I'm a DT/prog metal freak from Melbourne Australia. DT have been one of my fave bands since '92 along with QR since '85, Fates Warning, Savatage, Rush and countless others! Can someone on the list please enlighten me to the story and/or concept behind Space-Dye Vest? This song is one of the most enchanting that I have ever heard. Are the sampled voices/effects in the background taken from a movie? If so which one? Or... is it a conceptual storyline put together by the guys themselves? Well I didn't say he was bad but some of his live performances are a bit iffy. The band are the highlight of the band not Jim! I think the doors were a good example of the sum of the part theory.

Cool! I'm glad you're beginning to see the light. Don't stop there, keep upgrading as your wallet gets fatter. As I'm sure your finding out, you can never go backwards. Just for the tease of it, go to a VERY hi-end store and check out the hardware. Make sure to bring some of your favorite recordings with. Find a dealer that carries Wadia Digital CD players. I promise you'll have your mind blown. I warn you though... You may have an uncontrollable urge to trade your present vehicle for a 78 Chevette and spend the remaining cash on audio gear.

I see the Doors thread really took off... Rather than answer the multitude of questions individually, I'll address them best I can in one reply.
Most of you will NEVER understand what the Doors were all about. Yes, drugs played a VERY BIG role in their unique sound and stage antics. A dark room with a lone candle is probably the best environment to really appreciate their music. Knowing the lyrics really helps. However, for the full effect of the Doors, it helps greatly if your in the domain of altered states yourself. American Prayer is truly unique, to say the least.
As far a Val Kilmer playing the role of Jim Morrison.. I don't ANYONE could have done it better. The direction was excellent. Having the other band members as consultants was quite helpful for keeping the story accurate and in the proper mindset for those of us that remember what it's like to be really tuned.
I have many fond memories of watching the reels-go-round on my open reel machine as I drifted off to another planet. It was nice there...
The Doors wasn't just a band, they were a mindset.

"A Crack in the Mirror" is kind of an "intro" section to "Puppies on Acid". "Crack" screams Derrek (which, in this case, I really dig) and is a chunky, keyboard driven instrumental section. "Puppies on Acid" is the intro to "The Mirror" on Awake. They debuted it during the I&W tour as an intro to "Take the Time". It seemed much slower then, and heavier, than it is now. When these two intros are put together, the setlist says "Crack/Puppies". :) They did alot of "Crack/Puppies -> JLMB" during the first legs of the FII tour.

I am currently using a BOSS ME-30 which is supposed to have included all the chipsets of the individual Boss stomp boxes. But I'm getting a very digital (flat) tone... I get a better tone straight from my Fender Bronco Amp. How do I get a more "sweeter" analog tone? I'm using a JPM90HAM...
by the way, I just got the Queensryche Q2K album... ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! anyone agree?

Hmm.. I remember seeing an interview where he told that in January 1999, he had just gotten home when he received a conference call from the other guys in DT and they told him they were releasing him from his duties.. He said he was a bit shocked but then thought that actually the timing was pretty good; now he had the time to do Planet X.

The CD is FULL of energy. The live sound was recorded very well by Andy Sneap. The CD is mostly dominated by "Rising" tracks, but the band goes back and plays a few from the first to albums. What I found intresting is the direction of the two new studio tracks "Reborn" and "My Will" They still have that Stuck Mojo groove to them, but Rich (guitarist) actually sings the choruses instead of cookie monstering them. And this is equally as surprising to the use of keyboards to add to the stmosphere of the songs in certain parts. The two new songs show the bands new found maturity. The CD was supposed to be released in early September, but the band found a new deal with Korn's new label, which prbably upset Century Media (this was one of their big bands), and I am guessing that's why it was pushed back to Oct. On a 1 to 10 I give this CD an 8 for energy, heaviness and fun.

just wanted to drop a quick heads-up to the 'jam...
in case you weren't already aware, OFB (minus Petrucci) is doing an in-store appearance at a music store in Long Island on the release date of the new album (i'm not going to post all the info here, 'cause you can find it under the 'News' link at www.dreamtheater.net)...
anyway, i just called the store for directions (as well as confirm the info for myself (not that i doubt the info...it's just that i'm leaving work early and i'm traveling quite a distance to get there...)), and they told me 2 things that differ from the info that i read on the aforementioned web site:
1 - the band will be at the store at 7:00 pm, not 6:00 pm, as the announcement states, and (most importantly) 2 - the band will NOT (repeat - NOT) be performing at that appearance...they will only be doing an autograph session...
now, i realize that the guy that i talked to at the store may have misinformed me, but you might want to confirm details for yourselves if you're planning on making the trip out there...

When I first joined the Jam, LTE were just about to go on tour. Shortly thereafter, DT announced the departure of Derek. I remember about a month after the press release, Mike (I think) actually pointedly discussed why Derek was kicked out. I think the word "gay" was used, but I don't want to dig up that business again or worse yet take the quote out of context with how it was used. Anyone have that particular quote in it's entirety?

Yeah they will be performing the whole new album, and I will be filling in for JP that night.... =)
