    The Doors kicked ass?
Totally. To quote/paraphrase Henry Rollins (who narrated the VH1 Legends
    documentary on The Doors),
"they made some of the most disturbing/unsettling/eerie (can't remember
the exact word) music of the time."
I'm kinda bummed I have to miss seeing the Back Doors in Columbia, MO
this Friday (for those who don't know, they're a decent Coors trib.
band), but, well, I'm seeing Motorhead in St. Louis, so I think that's
more than a fair trade :).

this, but it just recently dawned on me, is how much like Jim Morrison
Glenn Danzig sounds like. Damn, some of that old Misfits stuff sounds a
whole lot like Jim singing for a punk band. I love it :).

    Hey,

A buddy of mine saw this cool band the other week when he was in Jersey, and
brought me their CD - Dresden. They're definitely prog, and definitely
great musicians. And in my opinion, very cool songwriters. I've been
listening to their CD "The Day that Neil Armstrong Died" over and over
again, and find more to like each time. Very diverse songs, I hear
influences from Rush to the Police (but don't be afraid of that!) They
have a lighter touch than DT, and are very textural, sort of like Spock's
Beard with minimal keyboards (if you can picture that!)

Anyway, check out their website: www.dresdenband.com. Even if you don't
like them, I think you'll enjoy their website if you have ShockWave...

Well, both are beginnings of The Mirror--sort of.

A Crack... is the instrumental intro for The Mirror they played on
the Awake tour, while Puppies... is The Mirror in its embryonic
state, just the beginning till the first verse. They played it live
during the I&W tours and later on some occasions.

Hmm, maybe the whole space feel to the album is a cover up, and Derek named it for his favorite pleasure chest ;) BTW, has anyone seen new pictures of Trent Reznor? I was in Tower the other day, browsing through some metal mag, and noticed that with Trent's new hair cut and earrings, he looks strikingly similar to Derek. I can wholeheartedly say I'll never lust for Trent again.

Doors fans: I think I need to take you on a tour of UCLA and show you "Jim Morrison's locker". During freshman orientation, they take you to a locker in the Math/Sciences building, covered with discarded acid tabs, which is a representations of Jim's locker (I'm sure the real thing was either trashed or long forgotten).

~~Amanda, still wearing my FII shirt in the vain hope that some UCLA student will spot me and declare his/her love of DT, therefore reassuring me that I'm not the only person here who doesn't like Backstreet Boys or Tupac.

You are correct, sir. If anyone wants an mp3 of "You Not Me" from that show it's on my FTP site in the Dream Theater directory. If anyone wants that whole show in mp3 let me know, but it's a very similar setlist to other shows I've got on there. Mostly standard FII set.

I don't have Philly in mp3, but the first show (New York 1/21/99) is on my server as well. Feel free to grab it...

Anonymous FTP to 24.5.106.175 (If that doesn't mean anything to you, check out the website in my signature file).

    Take care everyone...

You were most likely playing in "patch" mode, yes? Roland does not have drum programs mixed in with the regular programs (a la korg) they have a separate "rhythm" mode to preview drum sounds, and they are also available when in "performance" (read: multi-timbral, combi, whatever) mode. They are also fixed to channel 10, so you will need to make sure that you are sending on that MIDI channel to hear them.

There are a lot of expansion cards out for the JV series (15 or so at last count) -- some are great, some are so-so. I just got the "sound FX" board in my 2080 (which takes up to 8 of those add in boards) and it is very cool. Lots of "industrial" and noise types of sounds. Most of the big dealers will have a ROland unit filled with the sound boards so you can audition the sounds in the expansion board (they have their own bank) and if you look serious, they will even let you install a different one to try out (At least, I got a Guitar center to let me do that, and if you can get GUitar Center to give you service, you should be able to get ANYBODY to give you service) :)

regardless, no matter how cool it might be to go into the disc with no pre-listen spoiler of what SFAM is going to be like, those types of numbers argue for as great a marketing push as the record label is willing to support, rather than this no publicity, secrecy approach that's being taken....

the "casual" dt fans are still going to wait for what people who get it early to pronounce judgment before jumping, and if the early buzz is bad, regardless of whether it comes before or after the official release, sales just won't add up

Someone (forgive me I forgot your name) posted a link to shockwave magazine where they had an interview with Derek Sherinian. I was glad to read that he is doing fine. Honestly, I wasn't so sure about his future after DT. Now is it just me or has there been really nothing said about the circumstances surrounding his departure other than "he got fired/kicked out" or the usual bullshit about "creative differences"? I have been out of the information loop for a while so any insight would be appreciated.

I think he should have won an emmy or somthing. "The End" is still my favorite song, with "Riders on the Storm", and "Roadhouse Blues" close behind.

Hmmm. So you are talking about the difference between legal bootlegging and illegal bootlegging?

i.e: Legal - When the artist allows it (and whoever else also gives the ok). Illegal - When it's not allowed.

I agree. But how do the RIAA agents tell the difference when they kick in your door?

    > No, I was coming from the "You either don't mean what you're saying (as > in "you didn't fully explain your position")

You are correct sir. Thus the original "uh yeah :o)".

    > your're just trying to come up with some kind of legal justification > which does not exist.

Correct again. You mean you wouldn't buy it if you were on the jury?

    >>Depends on what the artist wants and what legal >> contracts are applicable.

    >So if you grant this, where's the grey area?

I think we are in agreement that it's usually illegal but sometimes not. But how do you tell if a boot is legal or illegal (if you were thinking of buying or trading)?

    > Where is the matter of opinion or perspective?

Coming right up...similar situation, different perspective (although you can debate if they are more different than alike):

    >>It seems immoral on >> face value. The courts are mixed. They have been >> letting people sell all kinds of photos and videos >> (i.e. Tommy and Pamela Lee). That seems worse than >> selling a music boot, but they allow it anyway.

    > The Pamela Lee smut was not protected under copyright when >it was sold initially. Bret Michaels has a copyright on his time >with her, and as a result, the courts say "fuck you, you can't sell >it without his permission."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that the court ruled that the Pam and Tommy tape had already been distributed everywhere, and thus had become "public domain". That was the justification for allowing the sales to continue. I believe the same justification was used by the court with the "Dr. Laura" nude pictures. I don't think that copyright was involved, but it was more an issue of consent.

Brett Micheal was able to act before any distribution his tape, and had identified the single potential seller. Then the court stopped it. Again, I don't think that copyright was involved, but you may be more up on the case than me.

But with that kind of precedent, It's possible that someday someone will successfully argue the same point with a widely distributed illegal live bootleg. Then again, the RIAA has a lot more money, clout and legal history than any bootlegger. Realistically, it probably won't happen. I concede that bootlegging will remain "illegal" (except when it's legal) ;o)

    > I'm not a lawyer, and neither are you....

And then again, I'm not a bootlegger, and you're not a spokesman for the RIAA (at least I think you're not). But it makes for some interesting debate until the new DT comes out.

    > there are laws that contradict your philosophy, > none of which I agree with personally, you have the > option, I suppose of starting some nation elsewhere > in which you can create and ratify doctrine based > upon your own philosophy.

You don't agree with the laws? So I can count on your vote?

    > The problem is, you're mixing your philosophy with your legal concepts.

Correct again. I wonder if that's how all the laws start out?

For the record, I don't make bootlegs. I don't buy bootlegs. I've hardly ever heard them.

I would agree. I really liked it...but, I heard it on the radio, and you could tell that it was edited as it cut off in a solo type area (either that or I guess it could lead directly into another song).

And by the way, I agree with the Stolichnaya choice. Absolut and that other crap stinks. It is vodka, and it better be made with potatoes...not grain like most of it is today.
