ah, but the radio edit of Home that they released to radio has cut out all
the parts that would spoil the surprise. i'm pretty sure the surprise
factor is the reason they dont want anyone getting mp3s or anything. it is
meant to be listened to as a whole.

yeah, but they wouldnt know it till after they bought it :) if DT were
thinking commercially, and i'm sure they dont have a materialistic

I saw someone mention this song on the last jam, its about time
one of my all time favs gets some respect. The album version is cool,
but the live version with James! I have it on the bootleg "When Dream
and James Unite" and on a video from the Pittsburgh Awake tour. Why did
they stop playing it halfway into the tour? I thought it fit really well
into the set. The old stuff is the shit, especially the Killing Hand.
Mike, if yall did up one of the dinosaurs, make it one of these two.
I thoughht of a cool way to pull one over on Wherhouse music
stores. Those who have them in your area know about the 5 used for 1 new
on Tuesdays. here's what I did last week, went and bought 5 used 2
dollar CD from a used CD store, took their stickers off, took them right
over to Wherehouse, got the 1st Machine Head CD regularly 17.99 for my
cost of 8.72. Not a bad lil deal.

I'd agree with you here except that I'd add people that sell ANY recording of the band as a pirater.

    >Funny thing is, some bootleggers accuse other >bootleggers of pirating their bootlegs...

Yeah, I always got a kick out of it when Mike Bahr said that it's "professional courtesy" for one bootscalper not to sell another bootscalper's wares. Let's take a look at this: They're only professional in the way a full time thief is a professional, so you can't really accept that part. And this fact kind of takes away from the "courtesy" end of that statement leaving you with "serious bullshit" as the revised (though synonymous) phrase.

So the moral is (and you knew it was coming) not to sell bootlegs and, if you're on the receiving end of this, don't buy bootlegs. It's as simple as that.

Whilst visiting Tokyo, tucked back in a pile of "old" CDs, I found an unopened copy of the Japanese FII (complete with that nice mini disk with Speak to Me and the TAMP demo). I hadn't seen one of these for over 1.5 years as they are supposedly long gone. The yen is strong now so it cost me $24.

What I would like to do is the following. There is a food bank in my town called "People Helping People". Please bid for the CD indicating a separate donation for the food bank. The winner will send me two checks. One addressed to me for $24, the other addressed to the food bank. I will forward the check to them giving credit to you. You will receive acknowledgement from them directly. Their check is tax deductable.

I will probably not have access to e-mail for about a week starting now so dont expect any responses too quickly. Minimum bid for the foodbank is $10. When you submit your bids, please make it clear if your bid includes my $24 or not.

He does use Dunlop Jazz III's and 009-046 string sizes. I'm not positive of the brand but I do know he uses those size strings and not the 009-042.

That depends on the program material. If your listening to a single 1 KHz tone you should only see a spike at 1K. Music posses a multitude of information throughout the audio spectrum. (20 Hz - 20 KHz) To the untrained eye It will look like a mess.

Not unless your listening to pink noise. (pink noise is a test signal comprised of an equal level of all frequencies in the audio spectrum)

I'm like to bite my tongue on this topic... Been there, done that. There are two schools of thought, you need to decide what side of the fence your on before I can be of any help.

*I* don't believe in EQs for a SERIOUS home system. If you need to polish a turd, reach for the EQ.

Very well-said. I like the new Vai album but was having trouble putting my finger on exactly why I don't regard it as highly as P&W or my other favorite, Alien Love Secrets. I think the answer is that most of the awesome guitar work comes from the existing "Book of Vai."

Where Vai experiments on this album is compositionally and in arrangement, with the Indian chanting and some of the odd sped-up samples. He is not experimenting with technique. Case in point: Lucky Charms. In this case, I think the addition of the "Leprechaun vocals" detracts from what otherwise would be one of the best tracks on the album. Prog content: odd meter in this tune!

On the other hand, Vai's vocal tracks on the last two albums have been surprisingly good. He has a great, natural sounding voice that emotes beautifully on the ballads. Turn the lights down low and put "I'll Be Around" on repeat a few times to see what I mean.

Finally, about the spam: someone has figured out that the jam is (at least) 90% male. You don't see spam about breast implants on here! This would suggest that it is not entirely random. Just a thought.

    I'm pissed!

As of now, (October 12th) My local radio station (93x) thinks I'm nuts for continuing to request material from the "phantom Dream Theater album." They have NO knowledge of it's existence whatsoever.

I've heard the new single on HardRadio, so I know it exists. So what's up with the distribution of the promotional copies? This isn't some little hick- town radio station, It's the largest station in Minnesota that supports our favorite format.

Mr. Portnoy, If you're listening, you may want to contact your label and see what's up. This could also be a case of "Lazy Program Director Syndrome" on the part of the radio station.

My local DT goon-squad and I have been pestering the shit out of the DJs. "Home" is now the most requested song to never grace the local transmitter. If they ever DO get it, It already has a healthy request history... Not to mention name recognition amongst the staff. :)

If this doesn't hit the air soon I'm going to break out the Latex glove and show KXXR's program director what a ProGtologist is all about. ^ -- Al - The Ytse-ProGtologist ^ Switchcraft Microsystems ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ When you live in the land of 10,000 lakes, it's nice to know that all men are created equal in cold water.

Hello, just wondering if anybody has had the privilege of hearing the Home single on the radio? I've called all the local stations where I'm from and noone has received it....big surprise. Not. Anyway, if anyone knows where to find an .mp3 or .RA of just that single....please email me privately, not to the jam. Nothing wrong with having an appetizer before the main course on the 26th, IMO.

    > Pirating - Making illegal copies of official releases > and selling them. Very bad. > Bootlegging - Making illegal(?) copies of unofficial

Contrary to popular belief, I am not anti bootleg. In fact, I agree that most bands should consider it free advertising, since it will cost more and cause more bad blood to stop bootlegs (look at what people think of Robert Fripp, as compared to what they think of Dave Matthews in that respect)... but this bothered me. What you just did is not much different, logically, than saying "Armed Robbery: Taking shit at gunpoint, and not paying for it. Bad. Theft: taking shit and not paying for it. No big deal." You can't support a legal argument for one and ignore the argument for the other. What's that "?" all about? Do you doubt the fact that bootlegging is, in general, illegal? It's still more rare for a band to allow it than not (most likely due to contractual restraints) I think boots can be cool... when there's an anomalous show in which new or weird songs are played, etc. I think that most of the time, it's lame to get a half assed recording of a standard live show, at which you probably did not attend, and pretend it's special. But when it comes down to it, you can't play dumb and pretend that you don't know if it's illegal. Whether or not it's immoral may be easier to debate (I personally think it's only immoral to sell, or support the sale of bootlegs, or to bootleg when you're asked not to by the artist, or band, etc... but that's just my view). Just had to get that off my chest.

Although you will probably get the new DT album on October 26 and totally immerse yourself in it (like I'm going to do), don't forget to turn off your CD player on Wednesday night (the 27th) and watch the new episode of South Park. That's right, the first new episode since "Jewbilee" will be another Halloween special. Should be sweet....

I've played Mullmuzzler straight through fifteen times in the last week or so. Damn, that is one fine album. I got "Manifesto for Futurism" by Dali's Dilemma in the mail last week (my favorite songs on Mullmuzzler were written by Matt Guillory), and it is also quite excellent. If you don't have these already, you really should consider getting at least one of them.

    Fourteen more days....

    Take care, Mark Peters epididymisle@earthlink.net

I can see what Chris Ptacek is getting at when he says that the cessation of evolution in a musicians works stifles their creativity. Perhaps Steve Vai can be accused of stagnation but then evolution occurs in very small, incremental steps. Now, I think Steve's music has changed and in this fashion. But it's almost imperceptable and when we hear that Vai is "radical" and "innovative" maybe we expect vast changes in style etc (Vai does a Broadway Musical!).

When we discover a musician that writes music that we have an affinity for, why should we want them to change their formula? There are plenty of new, up and coming bands that will produce music in every genre.

I think that we music fans are a fickle bunch. When a band actually does make a big change in their sound we say they're selling out or are running out of ideas, or are just plain rubbish (Falling into Infinity is a prime example of this).

    Anyway, food for thought.

There's a lot of talk of boot-legging and pirating in these digests but perhaps we're forgetting the the fact that we're being hugely ripped off by the musical retailers and companys themselves! =20

Here, in the UK, the average CD costs about =A315 (about $24 US). When this is broken down into its constituent components, it is the retailers that are taking the kings ransom of the price we pay. I would have no objections if it were the artists who got this share of the moneyk, since they are the creative force behind the music. But the thought of some manager sitting on his backside and getting all this money for relatively little work? Agreed, they have overheads and salaries to pay (oh, I'm sure they pay their employees really, really well -highly unlikely), but even when this is taken into account they are still ripping us off.

Here in the UK the Monopoly and Mergers Commission have investigated this twice and both time have felt that that no action need be taken. A back hander from the record companies and retailers? Perhaps.

So, when it costs so much to buy CD's is it any wonder that some folks will try and get it for much less or even for free by illegal means?

We should be attacking this injustice with the same vigour as we attack other corporate crimes.
