    Hello Kurt,

I assume you want some nice distortion? If this is the case then I'd go
for a decent amp with an overdrive facility-better still a valve amp.
However this can be quite expensive (=A3500 upwards). But over the years
I've spent money getting these fancy solid state amps that supposedly mimic
valves- Tube Emulators, Transtubes, Valvestates etc but when I got an all
valve amp (Peavey 5150 head and 4x12 cab) I realised what I'd been missing.
It's not just the mellower tone that valves produce, but it's the long
sustain, without harshness and unwanted feedback that they impart to your
    tone.=20

I could have saved a lot of cash by saving up and going straight for a
valve amp, but the initial outlay can be difficult. May I suggest selling
a family member into slavery, to raise the cash (siblings are always
    popular :-D)

    Good Luck=20

Kurt, here's my thoughts on the matter - I went through this whole thing 6
years ago when I first started playing. Although tube amps are much better
than solid state amps, initially it isn't worth the extra cash to buy one,
because the beginning guitarist doesn't really care about kick-ass tone
(well, at least not to the degree he will later). Man, even I used to think
this little Crate 1x10 solid-state combo was the holy-fucking-grail of
    tone...:)

Yes, those days are LONG gone (I now use a Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier). I
started out with a BOSS Metal Zone pedal (the best pedal on Earth as far as
metal-type distortion goes) - but by all means, don't feed it through a tube
amp (you have to go solid-state or the pedal sounds like shit)... :)

Personally, I'd recommend (as a good starting point) the Fender Princeton
Stereo Chorus amp. Yes, it's solid state, but it's about the best
inexpensive solid state amp money can buy. I'm looking at getting one for a
practice amp (the Dual Recto gets a bit loud for my neighbors, I'm afraid).
The Fender amp has a very good clean tone (with analog chorus), as well as
singing distortion, all built-in and foot-switchable. It sounds great,
especially if you can get a good price for it. Look around at used music
    stores and find one!

I couldn't agree more...while the secrecy thing is cool as far as the jam
goes (FII pre-release was ridiculous), I've found that many non-jammers
who liked DT until FII (most of the DT fans I know around here) have been
very sceptical about the new album, and want to hear it before they bother
with it...a very unfortunate circumstance. And to be honest, I don't
exactly think a radio edit of "Home" if ever going to make it to radio
here...so that just makes matters worse.

Well, it's time for me to de-lurk for my once every couple months post..

    WHAT ARE YOU GUYS THINKING!?!?

Do you realize how fortunate DT fans are to have a band that is as involved with their fans as Mike and the guys are?!
How many other bands take the time that DT takes (pun un-intentional) to PERSONALLY update mailing lists, websites, fan clubs, etc?! They don't HAVE to do this! They do it for US, and some of us don't seem to appreciate it, even going so far as to take advantage of it.
Mike is obviously very pissed, and rightly so, so don't be surprised if there are consequences to the actions taken by some.
Remember, the idiot offering the bootleg wasn't the only violation of the bands secrecy wish, it was just the icing on the cake.

    Jim aka Roadie

PS. Thanks again, Mike, for spending so much time and effort keeping in touch with your fans, I for one, really appreciate it.

I've been wondering this myself. Come on people, quit trying to look good
in public by kissing ass. It's pretty pathetic. We all know that
bootlegging the thing is wrong, listening to it before the release date is
a dissapointment to the band, yadda yadda yadda. If you want to apologize
for someone else's actions, knock yourself out, but it seems pretty silly
    to me.

has anyone recieved the latest DTIFC newsletter yet? i=B4m starting to think
that mine is lost or something....along with my renewal application!
    just checking on this....

    about Vai=B4s Ultra zone.....
with each new album that Vai puts out, i have been less and less satisfied
with his music. Although i only liked the instumental part of fire garden
(an not all of those instrumentals), the record had very memorable moments
    and songs....like bangkok/FGS.....

ALS,S&R,FG,FAL.....all those albums were not as good as P&W, but there were
very good moments and songs in them. They all were good albums, but i
always thought (like Steve said himself) that Vai could do better than
that, both technically and compositionally. The Ultra Zone lacks really
memorable moments (IMO). Although i have to listen to it more times, but
with a few spins i knew that i wasn=B4t going to find anything out of the
ordinary....and that it wasn=B4t going to be that great. Just another record
    almost.

I=B4d like to know more opinions on this album from all of you Vai
    fans/guitarists out there.....

just to correct a common mistake, this was NOT bootlegging. It was a
blatant attempt of PIRATING the cd. there is a serious difference and the
two should not be lumped together.

I'm not sure what happened here, since I didn't get a warning from Skadz or
whatnot, but my last post to the 'jam did not seem to go through. I didn't
see anything in the original post I'd deem as "borderline-spoiler", at
least nothing I haven't seen in some posts in the last few 'jams.

Before I re-post this, though, I would like to chime in my own PERSONAL
apology, as a fan, to Mike Portnoy. That dicklicker who was booting the
new CD ... I won't even go there. But as one of "the other fans" :) who
caved in and ruined a good part of the surprise for myself, I'm sorry for
not realizing what an incredible treat you and the rest of the band had in
store for your fans, and I have deleted (out of respect) the 2 mp3's I had.

Here's what I tried to post the other day:

    >Well, folks ...
    >
    >I did the unthinkable the other day (and I know I haven't been the only
one) and accepted an mp3 of the new DT (hey, that rhymes, heh) from a friend.
    >
    >I'm certainly not going to take after a few irresponsible members of the
'jam and post any specific spoilers or reviews; however, I don't think
posting a condensed version of my initial reaction to the track should get
    me in trouble with anyone:
    >
    >OH MY FUCKING GOD. (remember, that could be a good one OR a bad one! heh) :)
    >
    >On that note, I would like to warn anyone who is on the verge of caving in
and retrieving some mp3's of the new stuff (which is not hard to find):
WAIT. And if you can't wait, listen to what you get *once* and delete it.
I am now one track away from the *total* magic and surprise I was trying to
wait for until October 26th. I have not been able to stop playing this
song, and I'm almost sorry I downloaded it (sorry for the *right* reasons).
    >
    >To those with stronger will power: You have only THREE WEEKS left to
wait. You've been patient until now; don't give in to the temptation!!

    That's all for now ... 18 days left! :)

I'm giving up the internet for awhile, it seems that everywhere I go, and whoever I talk to, the feel the need to ruin the surprise for me. You can all say what you want on this, but for some reason, having the album in my hand and listening to a new song for the first time on my $3000 stereo system is a lot more exciting than waiting 1 and a half hours to download something that, even though the music is going to rock, the quality will not. Props to the band for giving us this time to maybe catch up on the older stuff before we throw a new one in the mix. I' ve actually began to like ' When Dream & Day Untie' recently. How could I have missed 'The One's Who Help To Set the Sun?' I for one (and a lot of other) can't wait for the surprise, and like I had to do in the weeks before the release of Rush's 'Different Stages', I'm going to stop logging onto the computer for now. Sorry to bore you all. 'Take Care and Tempt not the fates.'

Yes, I did it. I downloaded the new album. I found it on IRC purely by chance, and couldn't help myself from getting it. Some of you might bitch and moan about that, but honestly I don't care. Some of you are a little too anal at times (no, I'm not referring to the rectum).

So, I ask...what's so bad about doing this? Nothing. First of all, it's not like DT is going to be out a few more bucks, 'cause I fully intend on actually purchasing the album. I mean, it's not like I don't support the guys. I have the ytsejam *tattooed* on my back for cryin' out loud. Plus, the tracks aren't in perfect working order. The were obviously ripped by some guy who didn't know how. So, I'm going to have to buy the new album to get the full effect.

As most true fans of DT are, I'm a fanatic. When I heard that the new album was going to be released on October 26th (I'm in Texas), I was more pissed than elated. "Aww, damn, " I said to myself, "now I have to wait forever again." I'd already gone through this with FII, and it sucked even then. Well, imagine my wonder finding out that I could actually listen to the album in just few minutes...of *course* I'm going to grab at the chance.

For those of you who are going to flame me (and maybe even ban me), I hope you can see my side. I've downloaded it, and I'm listening to it as we speak. But, I'm not going to give a single spoiler (I've even had to rewrite parts of this so it won't hint at the new album), and I'm not going to send it to anyone. If someone wants it that badly, I suggest they wait until it's released. But if they can't wait, they can find it themselves. But, if anyone downloads the MP3's, buy the damn CD.

Now, I hope the band doesn't get mad at people like me. They must understand that we are, for the most part, completely loyal and fanatical fans. I'm not sure why the decided to release the album this late. Maybe it was the logistics of it all; I don't really know. But, hell yeah I downloaded the new album. It may not be the best copy in the world, but it'll hold me over until the 26th. And when the 26th comes along, you can bet your ass I'll be listening to the new *CD*, singing along to every word.

    Define "not too pricy."

Well, for a good metal/hard rock sound, I'd say the Boss Metal Zone is one of the best pedals out there. You'd be hard pressed to get a QR/DT sound out of just a distortion pedal, though (unless you're looking for the muddier sound that QR seems to be steering towards lately). Knowing that you're from the New Orleans area, though, your best bet it to wander on down to the Musician's Friend store with your guitar and try some stuff out and pick the one that you like. Hearing it for yourself on the type of equipment that you'll have is ultimately the ONLY way to really make up YOUR mind.

    Hello 'jammers!

For the ones wondering what happened to the YTSEJAM Digest No. 5097 :

"If the digest number makes it look like you missed an issue, you probably haven't--listproc has a bug where the digest number sometimes increments by two instead of one." (From the Ytsejam subscription welcome message)

Digitach RP-7. I own one, and it's about the best deal for the price I've found. It's ballsy but can be warm, and it's a real tube pedal, so it's not that grainy digital distortion crap.

Just incase no one has looked on MP's site, in the pics and sounds section under videos there are 5 downloadable videos of DT in the studio. Mostly just hanging about but on "Maystudio3" there is a bit of JP recording a guitar part for one of the new songs, and it sounds very nice.

    LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT REUNION

The wait is almost over. Legendary progressive rockers Liquid Tension Experiment have finally decided to reunite and release a third studio album. Three-fourths of the original lineup remain intact (John Petrucci-guitars, Mike Portnoy-drums, and Jordan Rudess-keyboards), with the only casualty being bassist Tony Levin. His replacement is veteran progressive metal bassist John Myung. The band is going to head in a bold new direction musically, and for the first time ever will feature vocals. These lead vocals will be handled by their other new bandmember, Kevin James LaBrie- who hails from the great white north. Due to the new musical direction, this upcoming release will be under the pseudonym "Dream Theater". Now that 3/4 of the original Liquid Tension Experiment lineup is involved in this new group, don't expect any more releases under the LTE moniker - the band appears committed to Dream Theater (and it may in fact become a permanent fixture, not just a temporary side-project). Expect the new album, entitled Dream Theater - "Scenes From a Memory" in stores October 26th.
