I don't normally have time to post to the jam but I gotta plug one of the
*BEST* CD's I have purchased this year. Power of Omens. If you can find
this CD entitled Eyes of the Oracle I highly recommend it. Of all the CD's
I picked up from import places over the last few months (stuff like
Magnitude 9, Symphorce, Superior, Ayreon and Digital Ruin) this one ends up
in my CD player more often than not. The CD is 72 minutes long, one of the
tracks "Test of Wills" is almost 20 minutes. Truly wonderful progressive
metal. Vocalist is a bit like Geoff Tate and the guy from Digital Ruin.
The band is so talented and tight sounding. For a tiny label (Elevate
Records) the production is surprisingly good.
While I'm on it I'll plug a few more fav's.
Symphony X: I agree with all of the nice things that have been said about
this band. They are very accessible with some great hard riffs, excellent
vocals and so forth. Divine wings of Tragedy stands out in my mind as the
best. In fact the title track is over 20 minutes long.
Shadow Gallery: not such a big fan here. I don't care much for choir-like
choruses. Admittedly I have not spent much time on them, as always YMMV.
Vanden Plas: great rockers. The first CD was pretty commercial sounding,
not in a bad way like the new Megadeth. They write incredibly catchy tunes,
the second CD God Thing was excellent. Good prog-ish influences, I
especially dig the tune "Rainmaker".
Fates Warning: I first heard them (dating myself a bit here) in High School
on one of those Metal Blade compilations. I guess I've been into them since
I stumbled on Night on Brocken many years ago. I have always missed the
original singer John Arch but Ray Alder is very powerful and made a good
replacement. Great band here, and some may think I'm crazy but Spectre
Within is my FAVORITE disc by them. But really any CD they have released is
worth buying.
and here are a few bands that you did not mention that bear recommendation
Tiles: I only own one "Presents of Mind". They are a great Rush inspired
band. Very talented bunch of guys, the singer has a very clear voice, like
I said HEAVY Rush influence.
Conception: I don't think I could say enough good things about these guys,
they write the catchiest songs in recent memory. Weird that I got into them
well after they broke up. Flow is a great place to start, good production a
bit of industrial influence, and you can find it in a decent states CD shop
(surprise!!). In your Multitude is probably the best CD they released IMHO.
Magnitude 9: 2 guys from Psycho-drama, and one from Artension (bass). One
of the better rockers out their. Progish influences but more in the power
metal realm. One of those bands that knows how to compose a song with
catchy riffs and clean vocals. I don't think there is a single bad song on
the entire disc called Chaos to Control.
Wow, I meant to just mention Power of Omens and got a bit carried away.

Mike Portnoy HIMSELF has spoken!!! And people are still not listening!!!!
The utter disrespect that has occured on this Jam during the past months
before the release of this new album, has been downright shocking!! This
was all culminated by the posting of they guy saying he was going to
"bootleg" the official release!!! And even Mike stepped in and threw
down!!! I mean COME ON PEOPLE!!!!! This band is IMO THE greatest band
ever, not just in music, but in fan relations!!!! Seriously, there are MANY
people who are jepordizing this! The Jam is not a place to find "advance
copies" and spoil everything for everone!!! Man, I'm just so appaled!
To Mike:
On behalf of the Jam, (I hope I speak for the majority of jammers out
there) I would like to appologize for the conduct of some of the morons who
have posted here. Please don't think that we have all fallen to this
dispicable level. I think that the approach to releasing this album has
been the best idea ever, and I am greatly looking forward to Christmas Day
(in this case Oct 26). Hopefully the person who post that has been removed.
Additionally, I would like to thank you for more than a decade of INCREDIBLE
music!!

I'm supposed to introduce myself, which is a little embarrassing, but here
goes.
My name is Anil Sahal.
I live in Edinburgh, Scotland.
I've been listening to Dream Theater for some years now and like their
ability to blend technical excellence with catchy hooks and riffs.
I'm a guitarist (surprise surprise)
My favourite album is Images and Words
Least favourite album is Falling into Infinity (I find it repetitive and a
bit too "samey")
I loved the Rock Disipline video by John Petrucci. He's a reasonably
competent player, isn't he? :-D!!!
I'm a big fan of Steve Vai (I can here his influence in JP's playing
sometimes)
Looking forward to the new album-oops I'm not supposed to mention that, am I?

Hey all, I might be getting a guitar for Xmas, could someone reccommend a
good (and not too pricy) pedal for me? I will be learning through
tabs,(easiest way, I guess), I already can play the beginning of Silent
Lucidity, and will want to play with a good metal/hard rock sound.
IE:QR,DT,Metallica, Sava you get the point.

Or perhaps the band just didn't realize that it happened. My guess is
that - just because something is posted doesn't mean that it's official.
Wait for the band to release the tracklisting (which I doubt they'll do,
since the tracklisting, though I haven't seen it, COULD theoretically give
away the surprise to a LOT of people).

Drummer!!! There was a tiny pic of Mike accepting the readers poll award!
CONGRATS MIKE from the drummers on this list!
There is also a great article on the drummer from Spocks Beard in this
issue! It's good to see prog music getting some respect in these mags!
Also, let's do our best to let each other know who has listened to the
album and who has not come the 26th. I think we all deserve the

3 prog metal bands you HAVE to check out:
1. Angra - if it wasnt for DT, these guys may be my fav prog metal
band right now. While they do have a large dose of melodic/classical
metal (ala Helloween, Yngwie, etc) they do have progressive
tendencies. Their singer Andre Matos is incredible. His range is
just like LaBrie's only his voice is MUCH cleaner and judging by what
live material I have heard, he hits every note DEAD on. Kiko Louriro
and Rafael Bittencourt are one hell of a guitar team. Their most
progressive album is Holy Land, but Fireworks is great too. Their
1st album, Angels Cry, has more melodic metal in it, but its great
nonetheless.
2. Stratovarius - from Finland and absolutely amazing. Keyboardist
and fellow Ytsejammer Jens Johansson and guitarist Timo Tolkki make
an incredible guitar/keys team that totally obliterates any trade off
solo that a certain Swedish guitarist may have done ;-). The drummer
Jorg Michael has to have the fastest legs Ive ever heard in my life.
Very classical and melodic metal oriented. Their live album Visions
of Europe is killer, but their best studio album is Episode.
3. Symphony X - the most like DT out of the 3. This band is filled
with incredible musicians, heavyweight guitarist Michael Romeo is one
hell of a shredder, and singer Russel Allen has quite an impressive
range that goes from Dio to Alder. Their best album is defniately
The Divine Wings of Tragedy. Unfortunately, they are currently only
on import, but they recently signed with Metal Blade, so you may want
to wait until they release their new album to check them out (that is
if you don't want to pay twice the amount for the CD, but IMO, its
worth it).

Well, my name is Adam Marler and I'm new to this list, and new to the whole
progressive scene. Not really new to prog music, as over the years I've had
CD's that only recently have discovered to be "progressive". Yeah, I've had
the usuals Rush, Tull, ect... but King Diamond? Blind Guardian?
Progressive? It makes sense now, in retrospect but had you told me then I
probably would have looked at you quizically and walked away. Gah, and I
thought regular metal had enough sub-genres. Which brings me too a point,
I've found that increasingly today, genres seem to be created at the drop of
a hat. It used to be, "Metal? Oh yeah, Metallica, Judas Priest ect..."
Now its, "Metal? What kind? You've got Grindcore, Progressive,
Thrash/Speed, Power Metal...." ad nauseum. Is this increasing fragmention a
normal trend? Anyways... Dream Theatre rocks and all that stuff too.

I think the fact that someone was trying to sell a bootleg of the CD
is downright horrible. I hope the fucker gets busted. He probably
wasn't a DT fan anyway, probably just some scum trying to make money
off of a highly anticipated CD. After reading Mike's post, I did feel
inredibly shitty for getting transfered two of the tracks from the new
album, and deleted them immediately, maybe I'll forget what they sound
like by the time the 26th comes around...but something that amazing
doesn't fade away so quickly ;-). At least I didnt go and get the
entire album, I didnt want to. But I do know why the band wants the
album kept secret, Ive known (in speculation) for some time (not from
any "inside source" but just from the general info that had been made
available). It was only recently that my speculation was affirmed as
fact. So maybe I will be missing out on a huge suprise that I
wouldn't have gotten had I not known anything. Nevertheless, the
album will be amazing, I am sure of it. But am I any less of a DT
fan? I still love the band, am incredibly inspired by their music
and will continue to support them by buying their albums and seeing
them live.
I just think that the idea of supreme secrecy of a new album is
an incredibly hard task to accomplish in this day and age. If it
were ten years ago, I would have thought it was possible, but today
with the internet and the speed of communications, theres no way it
would have been kept completely secret anyway, though I do think DT
has done a very good job so far.

Spock's Beard: can't go wrong with any of their 4 albums. my personal
favorite is their first, The Light. Combination of Pink Floyd and the
Beatles' White Album I'd say. After that album, they added a hammond
organ/mellotron player.
Symphony X: The Divine Wings if Tragedy, without a doubt. One if the best
progressive albums of the 90s.
Shadow Gallery: have two of their albums, Carved In Stone and Tryanny. don't
really care for either. Tryanny is probably the better of the two
Lemur Voice: have heard clips from both albums, but havent been able to get
my hands on either album. I saw Insights in a major store once, but was gone
when I went back to get it. A good sign, I guess
Vanden Plas: don't like them, so I dont know what a good starting point would
be
fates warning: hard to say. a pleasant shade of gray is my favorite, but its
their least accessable album. their most accessable is probably Parallels
I would also suggest "Holy Land" by Angra, "Vovin" by Therion, and any
Hogarth-era Marillion.

And IME opened for DT during one of the Awake or ACoS tours. So who knows.
Could be a complete coincidence.

Do a disc copy. The monkey-motion of transferring it to a .wav file serves
no purpose other than potential audio degradation.

Other people told me this as well but I saw yet other people
disagreeing with disc to disc copies. Check out the following page:

Well, just came up with another case last night why I don';t like this
no information policy... so I was talking to one of my old friends
from back home, who has similar musical taastes... he has most of the
other DT CDs, so we were talking music last night... anyway, I
asked him if he wanted to know anything about the new CD... so he was
like, well ... I probably won;'t get it, or at least, not for quite a
while... so I mention one bit of info from the new CD... and now, he
is upset that he is working when stores open on release day... so one
little piece of information about the new CD caused someone, who is
not a die-hard DT fan, to immediatly want the new CD... I realize
that non letting out info might be "neat" for people on this list --
the die-hard fans who will get the new CD right away, no matter what
they know about it... but for those who are not hard-core fans...
well... they have no real reason to go out and buy the CD, because
they don't have reason to get excited... (This also worked for
someone out here at work... someone who knows LTE, and owns both LTE
CDs, but doesn;t' own any DT CDs... I let him listen to some of the
material that I have found, and he also plans on buying the new CD as
well...)
Anyway, thats my take on everything...

Hehe. You're right, killing a person over this is a bit extreme. That
being said, however...
It is kind of sad to see how many people are going against the band's
wishes on this. I purposely stayed away from the 'Jam, IRC, and the
stinkin' newsgroup to avoid getting any news on the new album. Then, to my
surprise, THREE people uploaded the entire album to my FTP site in mp3
format. I didn't realize what it was at first until I saw "Home" in
there. Yikes... So you can see my obvious dilema - I had a copy (three,
actually) of the new album through no effort of my own. Do I listen to
it? Do I keep it? Do I delete it? What I settled on is just listening to
"Home" since it's the first single and is on radio now. Great stuff - I
can't wait 'till the 26th.
As far as the FTP server goes, there's been another update thanks to the
generosity of my users. Here's the new

I would have to agree here... although I think that each CD, between
the first and Kindness of Strangers have gotten progressivly
better... I think Day For Night and KoS are both amazing... I am

One thing to note, from my last post, is, I don't think that
discussion about the songs themselves is necessary to get all non
die-hards into the CD... its more that I think that some general
information about the CD would make for more suspense within the
general DT potential listeners...

Well, more importantly, what software did your drive come with, that
you want to replace... I personally have always liked Easy CD
Creator, especailly now that the 4.0 version allows you to create
audio CDs from MP3s without converting to WAVs first...

Oh... one other note that I have not seen mentioned here... I just
got the new issue of the DTIFC fanzine in the mail 2 days ago...
another interrsting read... I must say that I will be sorry to see
the old DTIFC go away, but am anxiously waiting to see the "new"
version, based off of the Holland digest (I forget the name)... (For
those who don;t know, this is the last digest from the current
club... but subscriptions will be passed on to the digest run out of
HOlland). I know with my last subscription, I got a notice when my
subscription was about to run out, so I hope that the new one
continues this practice (for whoever was aking how to know when their
subscriptn was about to run out)....
