Terve Heikki (= Hi there Heikki ;)

Here comes my recommendations (although I can't give 'em of all bands):

Spock's Beard - Just about anything. They're absolutely GREAT in every
album they've put out. If you really want me to name a favourite, I
guess it would The Light (which is the first of theirs). Others are (in
chronological order) Beware of Darkness, Kindness of Strangers and Day
for Night. Now keep in mind that these are only the studio albums.
There are also some(?) live albums too, and a from-the-vaults album
(whee, I guess it's even called that way ;) Great videos I heard,too...
And don't forget there's Neal's (the man behind SB) solo album, and the
supergroup album (featuring Mike P, Pete Trawavas [of Marillion], Roine
Stolt[of Flower Kings] with Neal), which isn't out yet, but is
guaranteed to please every prog fan in the world...(Do I go to extremes
    ? Well...;)

Symphony X - Same beginning as in the abovementioned. All their stuff
is GRRREAT !! But this time I can clearly name an absolute fave, The
Divine Wings of Tragedy. Unbelievable !!! I'm not sure how many albums
there are, but known for me are (also in chronological order) Self
titled (Symphony X), The Damnation Game, The Divine Wings of Tragedy
    and Twilight In Olympus.

Shadow Gallery - If you want the best (until the new one is here ;)
concept prog album (well, maybe not, but...) there is, get Tyranny.
It's SO awesome. It's brilliant. Magnificent. There's also Carved In
Stone (also a masterpiece, as I've been told), and one other album, the
name escapes from me now. That's all I know 'bout them. (BTW, there's a
few lines in Tyranny sung by KJLB, short but pleasent appearance. Some
guys of SG composed few songs to James' solo album, Mullmuzzler, which
is, IMHO, a must have for every DT fan)

Lemur Voice I know almost nothing about, just heard some sound clips
from Marcel's site (the guitarist). Those were pretty good stuff, just
couldn't get a clear picture of their complete style and sound. But
judging from what I've heard about them, almost everything by them is
    well worth the money.

Vanden Plas - Funny you mentioned them, just bought their The God Thing
last weekend. Heard so much about them (and I DID see them open for DT
in Helsinki in Falling Into Infinity tour in Helsinki, somehow I seemed
to miss something there, and just recently got into them). It's a
wonderful CD, I'm planning to get more from them. Very nice stuff. Too
bad I can't give anymore info.

Fates Warning - Hmm...now there's a band that is very recognized
amongst prog fans, but doesn't seem to light me up, for some reason I
can't get into them. At least yet. I bought their Still Life - double
live album, which is a good live album and includes their masterpiece,
A Pleasent Shade of Gray (over 50 - minute song, moody, thoughtful and
beautiful...) See, I can speak up to them ;) I'm sure there are dozens
of long reviews of FW, so I'll shut now...

There are also some other bands that I'd like to mention here. I
inserted a list below naming the band I look up to and a disc or too
that I warmly recommend. Also there's some projects of which lineup
isn't together as a band, but the album deserves a mention. Hope
    they'll cheer you up too.

Enchant - Blueprint of the World, Wounded, Break
Royal Hunt - Moving Target, Paradox(fantastic concept album too)
Threshold - Clone, Wounded Land, Psychedelicatessen
    Superior - Younique
    Angra - Holy Land, Fireworks
Explorer's Club - Age of Impact
    Platypus - Platypus
LTE - LTE, When The Water Breaks (Surely you know what these are ?!?!?)

I'm sure I left out many wonderful acts, butI believe there's a good
    start ;)

    Bye now, and happy hunting.

I would have to say it is their best work since the Ladder, even though the
first half of "Open Your Eyes" was pretty good. I only listen to the Ladder
twice, but I have to say I'm pretty impress. Anyone else share that opinion?

For some DTC, I really like James new solo effort, espicially Guardian
Angel, Matt Gulliroy has a great future ahead of him me thinks.

he would become deaf by some strange accident... biaxident :-)

Besides that... i wish you guys wouldn`t start talking about THE album on
26th cause it`ll take at least a week or two for some folks to get it...
such as myself. I`ll probably go to Italy to buy the cd cause people living

Yeah, boy!!!!! i caught that too, and almost fell off the chair when i heard

    > think eh?

        Hahahaha No.
This is really simple. I don't know why some people are playing it into
a big game of "censorship" or whatever. The majority of the jammers I speak
to, who haven't already heard a promo or something (which is in itself a
flawed representation of the album due to technical restraints) are getting
pissed off by people typing up lyrics in places without posting spoilers,
and discussing albums in terms of comparisons, which will inevitably color
your first listen (If they use a progression out of a Rush song, for
example, is it better to know that ahead of time, or is it better to listen
and enjoy and find out for yourself?)
It's not even about "my opinion" or "Your opinion" of what we should do.
It's totally a band thing... they put out the request, can we honor it? If
you have something to say about the album, can you simply share it with
those who you KNOW have already heard it? For the sake of the people on
this list who do care about this stuff!
There are a lot of people on the list who have already heard the album.
Most of them can hold back, and are holding back, even though it's pretty
fuckin' obvious that by now we have a lot to say about the new album. If
you guys want to talk about it, start up a listbot list for free or
something like that. Just ICQ each other. Let those here who are waiting
for a surprise (like I probably should have) continue waiting!

Earth's "Scenery and fish" and couldn't help but notice that there's a
part of the song "Like a girl" that sounds exactly like part of "New
Millennium" by Dream Theater. Both are goofy little musical grooves
right in the middle of the song ...anyone else noticed this? (It's quite
audible so I'm not going to post play times or anything). Just
wondering, and BTW IME released their CD like a year before FII...hmmmm

Hi, I'm Esa Virtanen. You might remember me from such Ytsejam articles as
the review of John Petrucci's and Mike Portnoy's Helsinki clinic in March
1998 (I'll be in the MFP list in no time).

Last tuesday (5th of October) Mike Portnoy held another clinic here in
Helsinki. In the post-clinic signing he expressed his dislike of the fact
that the 'jam is "full of bitching about The Veil and nobody writes
reviews about the clinic tour". So I volunteered. I noticed that there
already was a nice review, so I won't go into too much details.

Anyway, being a guitarist, I wasn't even sure whether to attend or not,
having a Petrucci clinic on the 29th and all (life is good), but ended up
doing so. Which wasn't a bad decision, since it was a nicely entertaining
event. Not much strictly technical drumming stuff, mostly playing along
and answering questions (and cellphones). Oh, the mystery last song was
Hell's Kitchen, so it should have sounded familiar :) Other points of
interest were the songs playing on the PA before the clinic. No, not the
new DT (which rocks!), but outtakes from the LTE 2 trio sessions. I didn'=
    t
really like most of them on the CD all that much, but some of the played
stuff sounded nice. The Stolt-Trewavas-Morse thing sounded good as well, =
    a
lot like Spock's Beard IMO, but that's probably because of Morse's vocals.
And I totally sucked at the "name that tune"-thing.

Another cool thing was that the kit he used (a replica of his own, minus
the octobans and some other stuff) was for sale for a measly 30000 Finnis=
    h
marks, whereas the "real" price would have been 75000FIM without the
cymbals. That corresponds to about $5500 and $14000. Too bad I had no
    spare change on myself..

Afterward, I got my LTE CDs signed and Mike commented on my (now obsolete
ax.com) Ytsejam T-shirt and made the remark about not having any reviews
here. So now you have two. I've also got some photographs which I could
    scan, if anyone's intrested..

I also made the mistake of commenting on the rockingness of the new DT (i=
    t
rocks!), and he didn't seem all too pleased about that. Yeah, it's easy
for him to blame us, since he's already heard it and all :) But even
though I feel a bit dirty for not respecting the band's wishes, I really
don't think I've ruined _that_ much for myself.. Now the release day won'=
    t
seem that much like christmas, but hey. You can't just pop the CD in and
be enlightened, it will take a few listens (took for me, at least). I hav=

to say, though, that on the first listens I was entirely too analytical..
The whole thing really "opened up" only when just listening to the songs,
not the structures, techniques, etc. Just a note to those who have
abstained themselves. Hope I didn't spoil anything :) But I digress. Of
course I will also buy the CD. Just know that it rocks. Especially, as
Jens mentioned, the Finnish bonus track of the heartfelt sixth-note
rendition of "S=E4kkij=E4rven Polkka" played on dog food can, tuned percu=
    ssion
    and alp horn.

    Hi all,
I just picked up a CD-RW drive. I was wondering if anyone knows of any other
software out there (besides what it came with), that would be the best for making
my own copies of cds. That is, taking one track from this cd, this track from
that one, etc. Are there any programs that offer better sound quality than
others? Or offer more control as far as level and eq goes?
Also, the CD-RW allows you to convert a cd track to .wav file first, if you
want to. Why would I? Is there a sound quality difference between converting to
wav first, then recording it to cd, as opposed to just transfering the track to
    the CD-RW? Anyone? (AL?)
    Thanks,
        Styles

    Hey guys...
I just read Mike's post on the last jam (#5098) and I was shocked that
someone would actually post that to the jam. If Skadz is watching (big
brother) could you make sure that the jerk who posted that is unsubbed?
To Mr. Portnoy and members of Dream Theater, I on behalf of those who
have respected your wishes apologize to you (and your record label) for the
disrespect that a fellow jammer has given you. We wish for all of you to
know that there are MANY jammers who have respected and followed your
wishes/demands and appreciate the veil of secrecy that you have bestowed
upon us. Furthermore, I hope that there are no hard feelings. I think I
can speak for many when I say that.

Well, at least it made me think. I guess 95% of us here on the list
are either from the US or Europe and we are talking to eachother
saying we don't want to spoil anything before October 26th. The mail
of the guy from Indonesia made me think we are pretty selfish here
because we are not even thinking about the people that will hear the
CD later than that just because of their location

Remember that as of October 26 their surprise will be totally gone and
I don't think anyone really ever considered that

    I don't understand...maybe I missed something. But, I recently found that
you can not only find out the names of all the tracks, but you can actually
download them. What the hell is up with that?

    Hi everyone,

I want to thank everyone who has sent in a request to be added to the new
IRC page so far. The page can't exist without that.

I would like to make note though that the page is for #ytsejam IRC channel
REGULARS ONLY. I can't add someone who never gets on IRC, just because
they want to be on the page. If you would like to start chatting on the
IRC channel, cool, come on over! Instructions on how to join the chat are
on the "welcome" page of the IRC site.

Again, thank you to everyone who has sent their pictures and bios to be
added to the page. I hope to get more! :)

    Sincerely,
    Irene

    Greetings fellow Jamsters

For those of you interested in hi-end audio gear... The October 1999 issue of Stereophile has a list of 700 recommended components ranging from extreme hi-end to lower mid-fi. This could be quite valuable for those of you thinking about picking up some new gear.

They also have some detailed information on the next generation of Digital media (HDCD) that will no doubt replace the CD as we know it.

You will more than likely have to go to a book/magazine store to find a copy. The magazine cover price is about $7.00 USD for over 240 pages of audio bliss. Even if you don't think you'd be in the market for any of this stuff, It's well worth reading just to see what makes us audiophiles tic.
