I've heard 74 minutes myself but I own several CDs that go up to 78 minutes. I think the truth is that commercial CDs (ie, from a record label) can hold more than CD-Rs. I'm relatively certain that CD-Rs max out at 74 minutes. So, I'd venture to say that the absolute most a commercial CD can hold is 78 minutes. There ya go. === *Trent

This blurb was taken straight from mikeportnoy.com. I'd provide a more specific hyperlink, but the info is contained in a pop up window. Dem's da breaks. Anywho, here we go--

<Mike speaketh> "However, I'm not going to dodge your question so I'll give you a "guess-timate": (Our label only really knows for sure...) Our biggest selling album to date in America was "Images & Words" which was certified Gold (over 500,000 copies sold in the US) largely due to success of Pull Me Under on US radio. Since then, the radio & MTV market in America has drastically changed - which has weeded out the fans of "our new hit single" and our sales have levelled out to reflect our "real" fan-base which has been in the 200,000 US sales vicinity each time out..

Our real sales have added up from over-seas markets (Germany, Italy, Holland, Brazil, Japan, etc..) where we do very well because those markets are less dependant on radio & MTV. For instance, all of our CD's have gone platinum in Japan (100,000 in Japan alone)

I suppose the "safe" answer is that we consistantly sell somewhere around half a million Worldwide each time out... (Which by Backstreet Boys standards is peanuts, but for a progessive band in 1999 writing 12 minutes songs is quite an achievement!)" </Mike speaketh>

So there ya have it, straight outta the horse's mouth. === *Trent

TOO proggy??? You mean as in not-heavy-enough-too-proggy? Thorn In My Mind is the second song (third track) on the album an it's one of the heaviest on the album. And it's also one of the 'proggiest', I agree. There's an instrumental part in the middle of that song that could've been straight out of Metropolis pt. I. Proggy? Yeah! Heavy? Yeah! Bad? NOOOOOO!

Actually, a friend of mine told me that there is some CD-R software out there that can "overburn" a CD-R up to 77 minutes, from what I've heard. I'm sure I could find out which it is if anyone's interested...

As a matter of fact, there are certain types of CD-Rs that can burn up to a maximum of 80 minutes. It depends on the brand name, though. However, most burning programs won't burn more than 74 minutes. The program called Nero Burning ROM will let you "overburn" a CD to as high as 80 minutes, but warns that you're doing so at the risk of damaging the CD and/or your CD-writer as well. I successfully burned a CD that was 74:11 in length, and am going to try sometime this week to burn a CD that's 77:10 in length (that one kinda scares me). I'll let you know what happens.

Metallica's Load (or ReLoad, i really dont feel like checking :) is about 80 minutes. pressed CDs (a.k.a silvers) can squeeze more than 74 minues in because they can put the pits and lands closer together on the glass master. however, this risks some older CD players not being able to read it. CD-Rs have the spiral already set in before you burn it (which is why when you stick a CD-R in a microwave, it tends to look a lot cooler than a pressed CD - somethign to do with the regularly spaced grooves or something, i'm not completely sure :), so it's a fixed size. you can often squeeze a few more seconds on, depending on the physical CD-R you happened to stick in your drive (each one varies slightly). yes, it is posible to try to burn past the 74 minute mark with the right software, but the CD will likely fail. all CD-R's have some extra space at the end - you can try and burn on it. they also sell 80-minute CD-R's, but they cost something like $17 (compared to about $1-$1.75), and really its not worth it just for an extra 6 minutes. you can read up mroe on this in the CD-R FAQ (i did a quick altavista search and came up with this link: http://pcline.epfl.ch/zuzu/cdr_faq.htm but its probably a mirror. anyways, it works). Quite an interesting read, especially if your hat happens to have a propeller attached. moo.

Oh no...it's official....the band has officially gone "Spinal Tap".

Except DT keeps losing keyboard players rather than drummers.

I anxiously await the release of "Metropolis Pt. II: Stonehenge"

Korgy showed us his version of the album cover. It took you exactly how long to create that? A whole 10 hours? ;)

Plus, don't forget: " can also mean "ditto"

I want to get a copy of the Ditto master. Hehehe.

NDTC: the post about Malmsteen was very amusing. His comment, "t's extremely self-indulgent, and it's extremely extreme" especially. You mean that's NOT normal. Well, hit me over the head with some large blunt object.

Hey, hey, thumbs up here! :) But I would prefer the whole set from Yellow Snow to Father O'Blivion, which pretty much stands as 1 song. :) -- CyberDuke "You can make more money as a butcher"

I think i sent that request to the wrong address. Sorry!!!

Also, anyone here going to see Yes? It'd be great if DT opened up for them...hey, the tour starts a little before the new cd comes out! I'm gonna be seeing them in Sunrise, Fl.

    Oh Baby,

Just got my tickets in the mail, anyone else in the Atlanta area going...? New Yes Sep 28, gig in Oct, new DT end of Oct, bound to be a tour, new MP vid probably November (nice Xmas present..!). Things seem just a little too good at the moment, something's bound to go horribly wrong soon.

There's been some chat about the new album title, I think it's really funny - I even heard the word "disinformation" being used, a government conspiracy maybe...? Someone said that the title is important, it reflects the music, well let's hope they don't call it "Dump in a Cup".

Well, even if the cover on members.xoom.com is fake or not, and even if it DOES scream facrtory Photoshop filters, I STILL think it looks pretty damn cool. So, to whoever made that thing up, cheers! :)
