Alright, here's the scoop:
I went to Mike Mangini's drum clinic at Brindley's Music in Chandler, AZ
(just outside PHX) last night, and walked out with a new favorite drummer!
Damn. The man is truly amazing. At the beginning of the clinic, he asked
for 2 numbers between 2 and 20 (inclusive) - I picked 13 and some other guy
picked 5. Anyway, he proceeded to solo for 10-15 minutes in 13/8 and 5/8,
some of the time carrying the 13/8 with double bass (at about 240 bpm or
so), and going nuts in 5/8 with his hands, on the snare, toms, and cymbals.
He was totally in a groove, and I just about lost my mind from the
incredible cluster-fuck. And not only is he an amazing drummer, the man is
a genius. He said he has spent much of his life studying philosophy, the
human brain, mathematics, physics, and computer programming to find out how
the mind controls the body and, in turn, how to subdivide sick time
signatures and polyrhythms. One of the coolest parts of the night, however,
was him playing along to a DAT of Extreme's "Hip Today". He played the drum
part on the CD mindlessly, it seemed, while he added the tastiest little
ornamentation over the top. He would play along with the horn parts on the
splash cymbals and small chinas, while moving with the bass on the low toms,
of course all while keeping the same solid beat underneath. Not only was it
stunning to watch, it was incredibly musical. Another nice thing was the
fact that he made you really excited to go home and practice and get better,
rather than shoot yourself for even starting... :)
BTW - he is giving private one-on-one drum lessons today and tomorrow at
Brindley's music - only $20 for 30 minutes, or $40 for 1 hour. There are
still spots available... I don't work for Brindley's or anything - I just
thought that was pretty damn cool! He's a really nice guy, and stayed after
the clinic for at least an hour signing autographs and talking with fans.
Very cool! If you get a chance to see him on his clinic tour, do it! You
won't be disappointed!

I've already tried adjusting the truss rod. Trouble was, that I didn't have
a check point, I mean... where was I supposed to stop ? I gave it approx. a
180=B0-200=B0 turn clockwise. I was totally afraid of ruin my babe ! now I h=
ave
that check point..Would you suggest how many sheets of paper should be the
distance ? And how much should I turn it ? Cuz..you'll see, I've bought it
second hand, its a pretty old instrument (maybe 10 years!), and according
to a "pro" guy maybe the wood won't respond to the truss rod turnings.
I did take it to the pro, BTW, and he said that he didn't have the tool
required, a kind of "pipe" screwdriver, not the "cross" one (parker ?, you
know...the X) =3D( He turned the bridge totally down, so I only can abuse of
the Rose towards the mics (lowering notes).
I'll try turning the truss... I just need to know if I have to do it once,
of do it a few times, little turnings (or bigger ones), and wait to see how
the wood responds.

I don't know - I have a BIG issue with this album (and there's always the
possibility that Marcel is reading this - so much the better).
This used to be $15.99 at Moremetal. Now it's like $22.99 (or close to
that - I'm too lazy to go look right now). $23 is not going to empty my
bank account, but as much as I love LV, I'm not buying it. If the band is
holding out for a U.S. deal, great. But in the meantime, don't inflate the
price of the album to the point where your fans are unwilling to buy it.
Well, I don't mean to imply that this was done intentionally, but when I can
go to any number of online vendors and get similar imports in the $12-$15
range, it's frustrating to pass on something I REALLY want.

Just a short note... I guess Jim worked with Rob till '95. I remember Jim came to Japan with DT in January of '95..... When DT guys came to Japan again in October '95, Mike said that story what you wrote. I don't know its exact date when Jim and Rob decided to work separately, but perhaps that happened in the summer or the early fall of 4 years ago.

Who are Dream Theater, and why are they releasing a so-called album? Have they asked the permission of this esteemed list if they can do this? Have they even asked if we want a new album? Have they fuck! I'm still waiting for hand-written petitions from all members of the band (past and present) on smooth velum, written in finest high gloss Chinese ink, asking whether there would be the slightest chance that I might be vaguely interested in the possibility of considering if I might be remotely honoured that the guys in the band might want to ask my permission about whether or not they would be allowed to record, produce and release a new album by the 26th of October. I mean, they owe it to us as their fans, don't they?
Returning to reality briefly, German music fans are in for a treat in November, with Anathema touring as the support act for Tiamat - promises to be a good night.

Sorry if this will seem a little bit off-topic, but since I've already red some guitar related posts in this digest, it's worth trying. So here it goes... I've heard some pretty awesome critics about the Ibanez guitar model RG570. It really seems it rocks all the way!!! In guitar playing I'm still a beginner, so I suppose that I am not (still!!!) worthy of that magnificent axe piece. A friend of mine is willing to sell me his guitar. It's an Ibanez RG270. I know it's quality is pretty fucking far from the RG570 model, but still I would like to know your opinion about this guitar...

I think I've gone off the deep end... :)
I've conjured up possibly the strangest, yet cool, cover of a tune ever conceived. Unfortunately, most of the crowd here couldn't begin to understand this unless you are familiar with the original material, which is unlikely if you're under 35 years old. (With the exception of those of you younger Jamsters that were tortured as children having to listen to the "Oldies" Stations at the hands of a parent that refused to acknowledge the fact that music has progressed since the 'Ol high school days)
Having said that...
I was watching late night television and seen a commercial for one of those 70's compilation CD's. I forget the name... Anyway, as I'm reliving my childhood (though the magic of infomercials) a tune I was once fond of came roaring through the speakers... Smokey Robinson's "Tears Of A Clown." Just then, a strange thought overcame me... This would be a cool tune to cover. My first thought was: Dream Theater! My second thought was: I gotta quit smoking this shit. Anyway... I quickly dispelled the DT idea, but then I thought, what about Fates Warning? Yes! This could be cool.
Start out the song with Fates in the "At Fates Hands" (vocal part) mode, at about 80 % of the original tempo, played clean. Then for the chorus and remaining verses, switch to "Island In The Stream" mode at normal tempo, and a little crunch :)
For those of you brave enough to attempt assembling this in your head, I wish to challenge the stability of your mental health.
