Yeah, things have changed alot around here (I remember when the 'Jam
was about the same size as the Bostonjam list (Boston area DT fans)
and still in the double digits for digest number), I mean, back then,
nobody even had heard of the Internet, let alone lived on it :) The
Jam was much more personal then, we were all one "small" family back
    then...

Those were times when _any_ offical news from DT was exciting... I
still remember getting info from C-Man (old Electra contact, I
think???) and tour dates, still remember hearing and not believing
that Kevin had left (until I spoke w/ a friend from the old Jam who
knew Kevin personally)... but as time went on, the BS grew...

Yes, I loved that fact that I heard most of Awake before it was
released, and that I had MP3s of FII a few weeks before it was
released, but that just went on to prove why the band wants to do what
they are doing... Everything sorta sucked the few weeks before FII
was released, when half the people here (lots of people) were trashing
    anything to do with FII...

Personally, I think FII was an amazing CD, with tracks like Lines In
The Sand, New Millenium, Trial of Tears being some amazingly prog
tracks... and I liked Derek's playing style -- I loved the heavy
keyboard sound whenever he played live... and after hearing, and
seeing Jordan play, I am sure that I will love the new stuff as
well... but I would hate to see people on the list _not_ buy the new
CD because some asshole on the Jam ruined it for them, even if they
would love the CD once they bought it ... so I can see things from
the band's (and Skadz's) point of view...

Besides, if people really want to know the set list (which I think
gives away alot about the CD), find it out the way I did, check out
alt.music.dream-theater... (no, I won't post it here, or on my web
page) There is some additional info there, and I am sure that as more
becomes available, the flames will start flying there as well...

    Anyway, just my thoughts...

Just for the record, I received the e-mail confirmation about an hour after my post to the jam. Now, we'll wait until oct/26.

It's a good thing I bought so many King Crimson albums recently - that'll keep me busy during *the* wait.

This is a misuse of the first amendment. Mailing lists are privately owned forums. If Skadz wants to ban the use of the letter "G" from the list, it's completely within his right to do so. Furthermore, banning topics like this is not a limit on your freedom of expression. You are free to do what you will where you will. There are still consequences to inappropriate actions. It doesn't matter if Skadz sits down and just picks through one jam, and boots those people off... it's still neither capricious or arbitrary... only incomplete. Without a doubt, it was requested by Mike that we not talk about it. Without a doubt, Skadz decided to enforce this, and made it publicly known. Speaking as one who has heard the new album (most of it, so far) and seen the track list, I personally believe that the track list WOULD give away a lot. Some of you do more damage in confirming or denying rumors than the people who start the rumors. But it's sad what this turned into. MP did this whole thing because he wanted to make sure there were some surprises, not because he's some fascist egomaniac or something like that. If you haven't dug up info on the new album, I TOTALLY recommend not doing so until you have access to it, either as a promo, at a local record shop, or in your hands or whatever. Get the whole thing at once, and it will make a difference. Your call though! - Chris

I just listened to it at a local store here, and I thought it was a vast improvement of HitNF. I don't hear the "uninspiredness" that most others claim to here. Geoff's voice is in fine form. I just placed an order for it at cdnow, along with DT's new one.

Hey all, while we are waiting, and listening to Q2K, There is a new band out there that deserves some attention, and I feel I should mention them. There name is Doubledrive, formally know as MK Ultra, but had to change theier name. They had a #1 radio song in Orlando, and that was just a demo song. I saw them open for Sevendust in June, and I remeber thinking, wow I have never seen an opening act that is this good. The CD 1000 Yard Stare was released on Aug 17th on MCA. They were featured on WWF Sunday Night Heat on the music section of the show. The music is really good hard rock. There are a few instances of double bass for all you music freaks. The guitars are thick and heavy. Vocally, take Scott Stapp's voice from Creed, lighten it up and give it a hell of a lot more feeling and range and that is what you have. The CD I believe is 8.99 at Circuit City, so go check em out!

I keep telling everyone, The Laser's Edge at lasercd.com. They have every progressive album in the world (don't take that literally) at great prices, and no shipping and handling included. They have both Nightwish albums at $18 a piece. Look under Catalog, then Complete Listing, then just scroll alphabetically until you find Nightwish.

CDNow has Gordian Knot there but not Sean Malone? Now why is that?

Well, I picked it up today, and my opinion thus far is mixed. I haven't heard HitNF so I can't draw any comparisons between that album and this most recent effort, but this must be their most blatently comercial album to date. Listening to it the first time it sounds almost like they put Soundgarden's "Superunkown" on in the background and just played along, only leaving out the hit songs and tracks with odd time sigs (yes, Soundgarden messed with that stuff a bit). But that is based on a very cursory first listen. Going back and listening again more carefully it is definately Queensryche, only this time with the distortion turned *way* up. The things that seems to be missing are the nice clean guitar solos and smooth vocal harmonies, especially in the chorus. Unfortunately, those are two of the things that drew me to the band in the first place, which makes it hard for me to get into this CD. The only track which hooked me from the start is "Right Side of My Mind", which could take it's place along with almost any other QR song. The rest of the CD is iffy; I'll find one part inspiring, but then the feeling leaves as quickly as it came. Maybe that will change with more listens, but only time will tell.

I also picked up Spock's Beard, "Beware of Darkness" today...great CD, bringing to mind Yes' "Close to the Edge" in some spots. The Beard are rapidly becoming one of my favorite acts, showing creativity in their music which one hasn't seen from QR since "Promised Land". BoD has some quirky stuff that one would never confuse for DT, but if you're willing to put the time into listening to it, it will eventually grab you by ther balls and never let go.

you must have missed the point. apparently skadz has set up a filter to automatically kick someone off the list when they post in mime, and he was testing this by posting in mime to see if he would get kicked off. thats what i gathered, anyway. moo.

Finally, somebody has it. I agree with Damon Fibraio. Why can't we discuss some- thing else instead of speculation and trying to upset people by teasing in one form or another. I expect this whining of "telling me this album title has ruined my life" routine. As a professional drummer/lyricist myself, I understand why the band wants things hush-hush. To start a buzz. Get the public to expect something big and then... give it to them. And coming from this group of musicians... WHOO!!!! As adults, young and old, we should be helping promote the band that we enjoy listening to, or in my case, playing for the public the material that DOES NOT promote sex, violence, drugs, murder like some artists do. This bands lyrics say nothing of that. As a prog metal drummer myself, I have always felt that people who listen to and understand the message being given, whether it be in front of you or you have to think about the words for a minute, are special anyway. We don't need that drival that we get on the radio or tv. We are intelligent enough to KNOW what we want out of life WITHOUT needing someone to tell us what THEY want us to do or be. I don't collect DT boots; I just download 'em of the web. If I were you, I'd go to http://dreamtheater.mit.edu. This is THE place to go for downloading live concerts. This is especially useful if you have one fucking fast connection to the web (T1, T3, cable modem, etc). dude, I seriously believe this is none other than the new DT album. The guitar playing sounds so much like Petrucci its scary. Who knows? Maybe the DJ is in with Elektra records...

I was just looking at the latest digest and I noticed that Skadz is running some tests to "unsubscribe" the people who post in MIME or HTML mode. I don't think it is working yet, but time will only tell. I want to applaud his effort. Thanks Skadz... MIME is SO annoying! Its just a one-off event for the time being - though the fact that DT are touring Europe around then might help to raise awareness of the event

    >PROGPOWER 1999 > >11/14/99 - Tilburg, The Netherlands

I seem to recall Rene anounced this some time ago on the list - more than once. Some of us booked our tickets months ago.

Exactly my thoughts! Plus Threshold too. A bunch of other bands on top makes this excellent line-up. All power to rene and the others who have worked to make this happen.

France! >back in the US for 2000 - hey now hang on a minute... WHERE'S THE UK?

I and many other UK jammers (we are many aren't we???) second that thought!

    >The release says 'selected cites'......doing Christmas shopping for European >Meat Products are we ? > >not good enough for you are we?

    <More needless winging snipped>

I am just as unhappy about the lack of tour dates as you are, but whinging away like that isn't going to impress anyone - least of all the band.

Many prog and prog-metal bands seem to book their European tours via booking agents in Germany - many of whom seem convinced that our country isn't worth visiting based on the sick, fashioned-crazed state of our music press and - it has to be said, relatively poor album sales for music of this genre. (Spocks Beard and Symphony X are just 2 such bands that I could name.) The economics of 'short'ish European tours don't seem to be able to support the cost of dragging equipment to and from the UK.

[Its strange though that Mike 'european' tour kit is in storage in the UK]

Hell instead of bitching about it why don't we organise a bus - or even a mini-bus and get our asses over to one of the gigs in Belgium or Holland. Its not a solution that everyone can afford I know - but it can be done, it can be great fun and the audiences generally have a better attitude than you'll find in the UK.

    >Come on we're only asking 2 or 3 dates guys!! - or even just one tiny >little ....30 minute set...

Well we're getting 3 dates from MP - we're not being totally forgotten.

    >(sorry about the ranting guys, I wrote this within a few seconds of >seeing the latest tour dates and I have calmed down now - I >suppose they'll come around eventually,

I'm sure they will - but if you still can't wait, like me - then lets do something about it!

Oh yeah! I've been waiting for this for so long. Of course, it won't end the problem with MIME. A really cool filter might be to block any and all MIME messages to begin with. I totally agree tho, MIME is damned annoying. === *Trent
